What do you think of this game and are you a fan of any West Kingdom or North Sea games?
Game looks like a lot of fun but definitely a bit hard to follow at first because of the sheer number of options on each turn. How would you compare this in terms of complexity and your personal enjoyment versus paladins and viscounts? I understand you've only had a couple plays but first impressions are usually a good indicator. Great playthrough as well!
I've play tested the game and have six plays in. I was overwhelmed in my first play test, perhaps in part because the designers were sitting in watching and it was on TTS, but I promise to any who are concerned that once you're familiarized it's fun and easy to take in all the choices. I enjoy all of the West Kingdom games and Raiders of the North Sea and this is already my clear favorite of the bunch. Great video guys - I was already pumped and now I'm more so.
@@JustinandHanna There are definitely a lot of options. And after your first play you will most likely be like "oh man I could have done this, this, and this wayyyy better" But it's really fun out of the gate. And with subsequent plays it just keeps getting better! It's hard to say with so few plays, but it's safe to say it'll be up there or higher than Paladins (Mike's fav) and Architects (Nick's fav)
@@TheBrothersMurph awesome to hear! Was definitely excited to hear about this new trilogy and will without a doubt be getting it when it comes out. Dice placement is such a cool mechanism. You guys turned me onto Rajas of the Ganges a year and a half ago and I still love that game.
I've never played any of these, but I have a friend who LOVES them. They are among her favorite games. I tend to like games that are less war themed or people-in-history themed, I guess? I go for more animals, otherworld fantasy (like LOTR), and things like crafting (ArchRavels)....just a personal preference.

I am so excited for this game, because I think the theme of this one makes it stand and makes the complexity more palatable because I want to see what kind of vistas I can create. Very, very excited.

I'm really looking forward to this game! I have all of the West Kingdom and North Sea games, and I really enjoy all of them. I really like games with dice as well, so this one may go to the top of my list of Garphill games.

This game looks so unique just looking at it. The art of the main board is great and the tableau building looks fun. Cant wait to get home and watch this whole video.
We hope you enjoy the rest of the vid and yeah it’s got a real unique feel to it with all the combo building/tableau building and the public workers who can be taken by anybody vs your own dice which are always your workers. It’s a game we really want to continue to explore because the options feel endless

Reminds me of A Feast For Odin: initially daunting decision space, but a rewarding sense of player agency and discovery with repeated plays.
I skipped the West Kingdom trilogy, as I was happily engaged with the North Sea stuff, but jumped onboard when I saw this one!
After seeing some of the tasty synergies and combos you two cooked up, looking forward to trying another game soon. 👍
I think a feast for odin is a great comp. Just choose some stuff to try and then search for synergies and there’s so many possibilities. So fun

I couldn't agree more it is a game you do better 2nd time thru.. normally I pick games up really well, but i legit had a 10 minute analysis paralysis turn first time haha. Game is GREAT. Great video guys
The first time you play can feel so overwhelming! Just gotta pick a direction and start walking. Or sailing I suppose

This game looks amazing! The only Garphill game I've played has been Hadrian's Wall. Dice placement is one of my favorite mechanisms so I will definitely be backing this.

Big fan of the West Kingdom Trilogy. Looking forward to trying this one out! I cannot believe the score. I thought Mike crushed Nick. Just goes to show the versatility of possible winning strategies.

Nice! We are huge fans of West Kingdom as well. Just love that Shem and Sam are making these trilogies of games that are loosely connected. One of the cooler things to happen in the last several years for sure.

Love Paladins and Viscounts. I just finished reading the rulebook, and yes, I know I still have to play it, but I'd be surprised if it didn't rival Paladins for my favorite by them.

I like the small footprint in this game. Few components and an interesting game.
It starts off small enough anyway but it certainly grows and grows. which is really fun
I already know I want this game. I mean if Shem wants to send an early copy to a fellow Kiwi for ummmm play testing, I'm happy to oblige. And of course I'm happy to do that for any future games as well. What can I say....I'm generous.

What do you usually do when you throw several dice with the same number?
mostly just roll with it unless it's real detrimental in which case I might hunt for an action that allows for some rerolls.
I think setup is not done correctly otherwise as usually i enjoyed watching
I know that the weight rating isn't always a perfect system, but does this game really feel like a 3.75? I am having so much more trouble with this one than Kanban which is 4.33.
I think this one can cause struggle because there’s so many possible choices so that can lead to a lot of brain burn.
Wish they made an Android port for this one

I have mixed feelings on how the game looks on the table. It looks so decentralized and messy. That being said, once I play it, I could completely change my mind.

I think the game looks like a ton of fun, but am I the only one who looks at the board and sees binary code? It kind of takes me out of the theme immersion.
Interesting. I think this game reads to me as mechanics first but then as you look in deeper you see how things tie thematically and it's satisfying. aka you need camels to travel overland and ships to travel over the water etc.
@@TheBrothersMurph I just love how beautifully the cards go together and then I look at the main board and I see:
10 11011 from the top down view and wish that it looked a little less mechanical and completely parchment like color (yes I do realize it is for journaling, but it feels like it could be a little less jarring of black on tan, who spills that much ink in a pattern like that?) It would probably be really neat if they had a black and white star chart (which has a grid on it) on top of the wood desk with the tree of choices on the stars, then around the edges on the wood portion the tiles and then the side on a piece of parchment with the pictures of the towers.

That's fair. For us we don't really care if a game does anything new. Executing old stuff well, is cool with us. It's always nice when something is new, but in the end it doesn't matter to us
@@TheBrothersMurph I remember in some videos way back when you said you like games that function thematically like games where the mechanics make sense with the theme. How well does the mechanisms tie into the theme with this one for you guys?
