A high school friend got arrested for pot dealing in college. Snitches get stitches, right? He didn't snitch on anybody. Unfortunately, everybody else snitched in order to save their own asses. He was the only one to get prison time (2.5 years federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison).

My first “hack” was in 7th grade when I discovered the software my school used in Keyboarding class could be scammed/hacked. The teacher would make us type into this program with our keyboards covered and the test would be timed. I discovered that if I typed the first word, and then held down the space bar, the program would count that as successful typing. So I’d score these outrageous typing speeds and it was only when the teacher looked at what I actually typed and not just the score the program sent her that I was busted. The sad thing is I could type faster than most of the other kids without cheating. I just liked being able to scam the system. Sorry, Mrs. Waddle.
In my HS; all it took was one guy and a usb stick. Bam; we're all playing counterstrike with full admin access on the Toronto District School Board computers. When I think about it now; someone could of seriously messed stuff up. Gamer mentality. lmao

One can use email for compulsory requirements only, but have no other online activity. No credit cards, cash & debit card only. Pay cash for everything possible, use burner phones and taxis/public transport. Wear a hat, glasses & mask/scarf or umbrella when appropriate. Big Brother is very real in all 1st world cities.

Also, often companies actually have the talent inhouse to prevent hacking, but due to mismanagement, it remains unused. Prioritize feature over Bug Fixes and the dev teams ignores security holes. Exempt the CEO from the password guideline and his online Dating Password lets you in on Company Secrets. Let the CEO write aggressive and insane short therm E-Mails request and then wonder why staff executes a simple and polite request like transferring 100'000$ to and offshore resort, when someone has gained access to the CEOs E-Mail account.

most people use decent keyboard and computer mice. It does not need to be something fancy, but you do not take the cheapest crap. The rest can be the cheapest crap and be used. And as you imply: A smartphone totally works, but... then you might use two (one for working and the other for research). Lots of hacking is just reading the documentation and wondering if they really did not think about that aspect.
I work with young adults with high-functioning Autism, this young man's matter-of-fact demeanour and genius has signs of being on the spectrum. I wish him well and hope a decent cyber security firm employs him in the future.

It was pretty wild! I was at university at the time, people were doing the silliest stunts online. Some random guy insulted me on a forum, so I sent him an email bomb to spam his email box. But I miscalculated and ended up crashing his university entire servers... oopsie, I got a 6 month internet ban

@@craftyrouze A lot of companies have bug-bounty programs or are member of public bug-bounty programs, Microsoft, Google and even Facebook regularly pay out small to pretty large sums of money for hackers finding bugs in their systems and/or software. A lot of companies hire cyber-security experts too or contract cyber-security companies to pentest their systems. If you've never heard of a company thanking/paying a hacker you should probably just Google it, it has even been in mainstream media plenty of times like the six 'o clock news in most countries by now... Its just a case of context, if someone just randomly hacks a company and then tells them, why should the company trust that person? If the company hires a hacker it is much better defined how far the hacker can go both legally and practically. Compare it to someone breaking into your house, if you told them to test your security by breaking in you wouldn't be too scared but if someone randomly breaks in you're not likely to thank them...

He reminds me of a book I read, it‘s called „perfect storm“ I think. It‘s about a group of teenagers that find out a us company is exploiting workers and decide to hack into their system to get the evidence to publish it via wiki leaks, while a secret service something is trying to find them and expose their identities. Really good book don‘t know how realistic it is tho
I really liked how he described how he got interested in hacking. How he got interested in hacking calculator websites and how he would insert code into them instead of normal numbers.

Having worked in IT security for some time, I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding of where the security vulnerabilities are. People are given a false sense of security, too. I will address these as briefly as possible, so bear with the long post. -ANY data that you put online, which is data that can be accessed from a remote computer, can be stolen. I am not fear mongering. ANY data. -The data that you access is saved on servers and the servers are targeted. -Routers are highly vulnerable and often used as an entry way to a server. Most routers were an afterthought, not built with security in mind. If you can update your router firmware, do it! -Your router board or server motherboard may have secret chips on them, planted by the Chinese government. An IT admin would have full network monitoring capability and would know if data was being sent to an unknown server. This first made the news about 8 years ago, however I have yet to see a follow up to it actually being verified. So take that for what its worth. Your Work computer: Your IT dept. tells or forces you to change your password often. That is to prevent a fellow employee of dubious character from accessing your machine. In rarer cases, to prevent someone who doesn't belong in the building in the first place. False sense of security given to public: You are told to change your passwords and create "strong" passwords to make you feel good about using a completely insecure platform. -The password for your online account does NOT prevent your data from being stolen. Remember, I said servers and routers are often the target. Your specific password has no bearing on those attacks. -Complex passwords do NOT equate to better security. The LENGTH of the password is what enhances security. You can have a long password that is insecure: 123456789101112131415 is NOT a good password and neither is 5555555555555555555. Common public vulnerabilities: -Phishing and e-mail. NEVER open attachments from emails of people you do not know. example attachments are pdf, xls, doc. Block and delete the email if possible. If it occurs at work report it to your IT staff. -never open links within emails. These often take you to malicious sites. Again, this refers to emails from unknown senders. -if someone you trust is emailing you something that seems really odd, don't open the attachment or click on the link. Text or call them and ask if they sent you that email. Chances are they did not. -never use the same PW for multiple accounts. This of course does not cover everything but I hope it helps people.

I'd like to think me and a bunch or my classmates back in grade 9 were really good at getting into the schools system. We internally installed Counter Strike on almost every computer in the school.
We got really good at it too after the IT guy accidentally gave some kid an admin account (which we shamelessly stole for prank purposes) The easiest hacks are based on human error, right !
@@p4ngolin this wasn't human error, We bypassed the schools system by using our student accounts and abused the drop box function at the time was supposed to be used to hand in your powerpoint presentations, we found a way around it to make it hold the installation program into it, which gave all the computers except the teachers access to download CS. No admin needed.

My first “hack” was in 7th grade when I discovered the software my school used in Keyboarding class could be scammed/hacked.
The teacher would make us type into this program with our keyboards covered and the test would be timed. I discovered that if I typed the first word, and then held down the space bar, the program would count that as successful typing.
So I’d score these outrageous typing speeds and it was only when the teacher looked at what I actually typed and not just the score the program sent her that I was busted.
The sad thing is I could type faster than most of the other kids without cheating. I just liked being able to scam the system.

@@craftyrouze A lot of companies have bug-bounty programs or are member of public bug-bounty programs, Microsoft, Google and even Facebook regularly pay out small to pretty large sums of money for hackers finding bugs in their systems and/or software. A lot of companies hire cyber-security experts too or contract cyber-security companies to pentest their systems.
If you've never heard of a company thanking/paying a hacker you should probably just Google it, it has even been in mainstream media plenty of times like the six 'o clock news in most countries by now...
Its just a case of context, if someone just randomly hacks a company and then tells them, why should the company trust that person? If the company hires a hacker it is much better defined how far the hacker can go both legally and practically. Compare it to someone breaking into your house, if you told them to test your security by breaking in you wouldn't be too scared but if someone randomly breaks in you're not likely to thank them...

He reminds me of a book I read, it‘s called „perfect storm“ I think. It‘s about a group of teenagers that find out a us company is exploiting workers and decide to hack into their system to get the evidence to publish it via wiki leaks, while a secret service something is trying to find them and expose their identities. Really good book don‘t know how realistic it is tho
I really liked how he described how he got interested in hacking. How he got interested in hacking calculator websites and how he would insert code into them instead of normal numbers.

Having worked in IT security for some time, I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding of where the security vulnerabilities are. People are given a false sense of security, too. I will address these as briefly as possible, so bear with the long post.
-ANY data that you put online, which is data that can be accessed from a remote computer, can be stolen. I am not fear mongering. ANY data.
-The data that you access is saved on servers and the servers are targeted.
-Routers are highly vulnerable and often used as an entry way to a server. Most routers were an afterthought, not built with security in mind. If you can update your router firmware, do it!
-Your router board or server motherboard may have secret chips on them, planted by the Chinese government. An IT admin would have full network monitoring capability and would know if data was being sent to an unknown server. This first made the news about 8 years ago, however I have yet to see a follow up to it actually being verified. So take that for what its worth.
Your Work computer: Your IT dept. tells or forces you to change your password often. That is to prevent a fellow employee of dubious character from accessing your machine. In rarer cases, to prevent someone who doesn't belong in the building in the first place.
False sense of security given to public:
You are told to change your passwords and create "strong" passwords to make you feel good about using a completely insecure platform.
-The password for your online account does NOT prevent your data from being stolen. Remember, I said servers and routers are often the target. Your specific password has no bearing on those attacks.
-Complex passwords do NOT equate to better security. The LENGTH of the password is what enhances security. You can have a long password that is insecure: 123456789101112131415 is NOT a good password and neither is 5555555555555555555.
Common public vulnerabilities:
-Phishing and e-mail. NEVER open attachments from emails of people you do not know. example attachments are pdf, xls, doc. Block and delete the email if possible. If it occurs at work report it to your IT staff.
-never open links within emails. These often take you to malicious sites. Again, this refers to emails from unknown senders.
-if someone you trust is emailing you something that seems really odd, don't open the attachment or click on the link. Text or call them and ask if they sent you that email. Chances are they did not.
-never use the same PW for multiple accounts.
This of course does not cover everything but I hope it helps people.

I'd like to think me and a bunch or my classmates back in grade 9 were really good at getting into the schools system.
We internally installed Counter Strike on almost every computer in the school.
We got really good at it too after the IT guy accidentally gave some kid an admin account (which we shamelessly stole for prank purposes)
The easiest hacks are based on human error, right !

We bypassed the schools system by using our student accounts and abused the drop box function at the time was supposed to be used to hand in your powerpoint presentations, we found a way around it to make it hold the installation program into it, which gave all the computers except the teachers access to download CS. No admin needed.
