You know at the time of a lot of animations pointing out the "angry black woman" trope, i did find it weird that there wasn't a reason for Tamika to be angry all the time, but I want to say it goes with her all around character for what instrument she plays. You have this loud, aggressive character who plays the harp, a soft and delicate sounding instrument. When I made the comparisons to everyone else's instrument, it's kind of the same. Lil D is hyper and loud so he gets the drums, Madison is kind of whimsical and cheery so she plays violin, and as hardcore as Tamika is, her playing the harp means she has a softer side to her, but doesn't show it as much. it's a theory, but I do wish it was touched on more I guess. Not a "show, but don't tell" but more of a "shown but not explained enough"

But find out he's SUPER sweet and so is Tamika. But issue was she said she had to be hard and didn't want people to know about her other side and spent the entire episode hiding her boyfriend and how soft she is.

Andre's voice acting is excellent the fact he wasn't asked to do more voice acting is a real shame. Especially by the standard of celebrity voice actors I was super impressed rewatching before your video. He's so warm and expressive and I think given his name value I'd cast him in some of those celeb fest animated movies as a major role cause he's great.
I def wouldn't label Libby as "the 1 black girl in the show is the aggressive one". Kinda bossy/sassy, but she only got mad when it made sense bc she actually had a brain and most of the main characters be wildin. She had the temperament of a saint next to Cindy
Yeah, Libby wasn’t angry or aggressive at all, really. She was far more chill and relaxed. That’s why she was a good foil to Cindy and Sheen, who were so quick to anger and energetic, respectively. I loved Libby so much as a kid, her bangs-over-one-eye look was formative to me as a child.
This cartoon was basically The Magic School Bus but teaching music theory instead of science. I've never seen a show like it before or since and I'm so glad to see someone doing a breakdown of what makes it so good. :)
Was libby "the angry one"? To me she was more of the laid back one, the voice of reason, the cool one. And Cindy was the Angry one, always annoyed and aggressive.
Yeah Libby was always pretty chill. The episode where Sheen becomes a super genius for example. The moment Sheen chose her as his queen, she went along with it with no problem.
Libby fit every stereotype of a sassy black woman. She'd sass, wag her finger, move her neck, always call her best friend out for being obviously in love. Being laid back isn't her character but can look like chill because her best friend is Cindy who has *no* chill.
Very well summarized... it just would've been great to see him don the captain's hat instead of just showing up wearing it. Like if Sonny put it on him.
I loved this show SO much growing up. A black-dominated soundtrack, set in my home state at the time, great characters….it was fantastic. I was so sad when I heard it was cancelled.
"We can play the blame game all day. It still ain't going to change the fact that I never take responsibility for anything." Still the best character of the series.
It was nice to hear southern, especially Georgia accents, as just regular speech rather than a punchline. It sucked most of the voice actors were just imitating and we could tell. The colors, unique animation, clever writing, and Andre 3000's beats and smooth voice... I just couldn't get enough. Even though I was a little too old for the show when it came out, and it wasn't as okay at that time for tweens and teens to watch cartoons. I still hunt out the songs from Class of 3000 every now and then.
I honestly forgot how many of the characters had a southern accent. And the fact that it’s presented as just part of the characters without commentary is very refreshing. While I’ve never been too bothered by accents for comedy - even my own - they can get overbearing or rude, and it’s just another nice touch they didn’t have to include but I’m so glad they did.
I loved Outkast back in the day and had always wondered how this cartoon turned out. Thanks for covering it, Tariq! This show looked really creative and fun.
I don't even remember how old I was last time I watched Jimmy Neutron, but with my nostalgia glasses on I honestly can't remember ever seeing Libby as the "angry black girl" vibe like, at all. Cindy is literally always angry or shouting at SOMEONE. Libby is only ever angry if something comes up. Is she loud often? Yeah, but it's because she likes music. I don't think that's a fair comparison at all when Cindy is more of an angry chick than she is lol
vocally screamed seeing this uploaded lmao this show was a fucking gem, everything about it just...god it's so so good. so happy you're talking about it, i can't think of a better youtuber to bring this to people's attention EDIT: oh sweet lord the romeo show, lol. all i remember is the episode where the kids went to a lumber museum
I've never clicked on something so fast; this was my absolute favorite show as a kid! I remember when I watched the premiere! And 44 minutes??! 👏😭 *Edit:* Yes! I was worried you wouldn't mention Al Hirschfeld but you did! 👏
Andre 3 stacks is one of my favorite rappers and people of all time. His influence on my young life and the lives of so many kids of his time is immeasurable. I always felt like i wasn’t alone cuz of his music bro. He made me feel like it was okay to be myself unapologetically
This show's dialogue and music must've been real impactful to me. I haven't seen the show since its run, but hearing these lines and songs, it's unlocking some deep memories.
This may be on of my favorite endings to a Tariq video ever. I felt revitalized. I felt like I could doing anything and let my life and soul fly. Be myself and no matter what I'll end up ok some how. Thanks Tariq. You a legend.
19:28 Don't worry, you have every reason to say that! It's a genuine issue with how black women and black girls are portrayed in media and more people need to take notice that this is a stereotype. It's of an era sure, but that doesn't excuse how it was so common throughout the 2000's with these characters.
Ah yes, I remember this show and it was sooooo good! The music, the animation, the voice acting. I love it! I mean I really wish this show was more well known
this is one of those shows where I remember loving it as a kid, but not being able to recall why I liked it. I remember the main reason it caught my attention was the style. 🤩
The way the series introduced me to music, importantly taught me lessons through black influenced genres like funk and jazz from the South, it really still resonates to me till this day. And I can’t be the only one who played the FunkBox game back on the old CN website making my own songs.
I remember when I was a kid Class of 3000 had just recently came out and I was on a trip with my family to Atlanta. I was obsessed with Cartoon Network so the idea of visiting the real place a new show was set in was awesome, and even though I didn't really know much about Outkast beyond the song Hey Ya I found Andre 3000 really cool. We were getting food from a stand and talking with the guy running it. I mentioned something about Andre 3000 and the dude says that he goes to church with his mom. As a kid who'd never come close to meeting a celebrity in his entire life, the idea of meeting someone who went to church with the mom of the guy in the cartoon I watched blew my mind.
Class of 3000 was my first introduction to 3 stacks as a person and when I got older and started digging into OutKast’s catalog I couldn’t help but look back fondly on a show that I just so happen to be at the right place and the right time to watch as a kid. Hard to find an artist comparable to 3 stacks. Man’s in a league of his own.
The colors and music and how people just are interested show has always been something I haven't forgotten since watching. I appreciate being around to see it 🍀
Another Tariq classic! This show came out shortly after I moved to Atlanta as a kid, so it will always fill a special place in my heart. Glad you had fun with this one.
I won't let this flop, this was so fuckin great!! I love Class of 3000 and i really hope this video blows up cause I want more folks to not only see this show, but see how well you've represented it, with the music, the visuals, the facts etc. You and Mann killed it!
I remember joining a music class once because of this show. This show was truly underrated, wish I had a teacher like Sonny. Also some things to note about the show, I forgot that $100 bill bus scene until now, Phil reminds me of Arnold from the Magic School bus and Madison was my favorite character but holy shit, I forgot she was a savage.
I'm glad you're talking about Class Of 3000 the show deserves more love. On the topic of the angry black girl cliché while I do agree all black women don't need to be written that way I personally don't think it's a problem if a black female character happens to be written that way I only think it's a problem if every time a black female is in a show that's how she acts or if all characters within a show act the same way. As for Libby from Jimmy Neutron I honestly never got vibes from her that she was a angry black woman she was sassy at times and sometimes antagonistic toward Jimmy, Carl and mostly Sheen but she never came off as straight up angry to me.
@@tiablue9106 Yeah Cindy came off as way more angry to me there’s also many times in the series when Libby is very caring to Cindy and even Sheen sometimes.
Definitely agree. I took Libby as just not taking anybody's nonsense and standing firm in her beliefs and ideals. She wasn't flaky or wishy washy, but she wasn't one to keep her mouth closed if she felt the issue was important enough to have her voice in it. She was also a great friend. The way they did her hairstyle in the Egyptian mummy episode was really awesome, too. Especially because she had a more straightened style before the dreads came in. She is an incredibly well-rounded and fleshed out character. Definitely one of my favorites.
libby always seemed like the more calm one compared to cindy, imo? disclaimer i'm a white guy so the nuance is probably not smth i'm too tuned into i remember loving the episode where they went to egypt and libby changed her look after finding more about her ancestors, that felt so cool to me as a kid
Hearing some of these songs reawakened the feeling of watching and loving this show as a kid. Not just a memory. The feeling. Genuine joy and excitement for something that celebrated creativity. Gawd damn this show was something special.
I’m just happy anybody is talking about this. I only got to talk about this a little bit in an earlier short of mine but this show was nearly forgotten of all things. This series was so damn underrated and unappreciated that it makes me wanna scream fam.
As a kid from ATL when this show came out(I was 9!), and now drives on one of those big overpasses shown in the opening to get to work, thank you for making this video. I loved this so much show growing up and I think about it weekly, and it defiantly had a huge influence on me that I didn't even realize. It directly influenced how I look at people who live in Atl (and the rest of the state) and put me on a path to do better. I'm into much more diverse music and animation due to this show, and was so fucking happy to see a show set in Atlanta, when most are set in NY and LA. Andre 3000 has influenced my life so much and I had no clue until I was older. I wish there was more, but this show means so fucking much to me, and I'm so sad I didn't get to go to the live opening.
I’m sorry the algorithm doesn’t show your videos love. I love your content and try to watch everything to support you. I rewatch your videos all the time too because they’re so well done and entertaining. Keep up the awesome work! 🥰
What I love so much about Tariq is unlike most animation reviewers, Toonrific doesn’t give a damn about the algorithm and swears as much as he wants. More animated reviewers need to swear. DAMN IT!!!
I’m 23 and still watch Class Of 3000, I remember when it first premiered back in 2006 and had the soundtrack (Still listen to that) Andre 3000 is my favorite of rapper of all time and had his own TV Show? Legendary🔥
I didn't know this show existed until Comfort Cartoon opened a box of figures with an Andre 3000 figure mixed in with major Cartoon Network shows represented.
One interesting to note about Widescreen Copies of Class of 3000, they come from Australlia (excluding the christmas special but that one's im 240p anyway). Due to this, a few scenes were censored out (CN AU always does this) Such as in Episode 3 when Sunny Walks into oncoming traffic, or throughout Episode 3 with any showing or mention of Nitroglycerin (even though it's almost integral to the ending)
the connection to Rhapsody in Blue was 🤯 amazing pull, and one of my favorite Disney shorts of all time. also probably explains why this show always stuck in my head
*proud in Georgian* it's nice to hear uniform, authentic accents from the place I call home. I live an hour away from Atlanta, but it deadass felt like I was back in class listening to folks talk
I think about this show a lot from time to time.. My brother is heavy into hip-hop, and I have a passive passion for it thanks to him being so annoying about it. I think André 3000 was one of the first rappers I could say I really grew to love, so around the time this show was coming out I remember it being such a momentous occasion. The show aired and it was fantastic. Stylized animation, fluid movement, vibrant and colorful visuals, hilarious humor, mostly realistic problems for the characters, and the music.. GOD the music was other-worldly. And Cartoon Network knew it because they'd bump "Throw Down" AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN until I couldn't stand that song. But they did play others from time to time too, and it really showed how far the music could carry this show.
Always love seeing love for the show! I tried to show it some love ages ago when I brought on the director of the show, Joe Horne. Really cool chat from a really cool cat, and the details he gave were incredible. Seeing your vid reminds me how awesome the show was and makes me wish there was more!
I was able to catch the premier of this show back in the day and I really liked it. During a time in my life where I was starting to drift away from cartoons, which was accurately called out in the video lol, I would occasionally flip to CN and catch this when it was on. It helped a lot that the channel aired the music videos on their own so I was able to listen to those earworm songs a lot, especially "Rich Shade of Blue" and "Banana Zoo". By the time the show disappeared from the network and I'd stopped watching television altogether, I still remembered this show because it was just that memorable to me. Excellent show, and I'm happy you celebrated it with this video.
34:42 Yeah, I don’t know if you happened to come across this, but Andre said that when the show was in production he would have to lay “reference tracks” for the kids to sing over. The album, like the show’s version of “We Want Your Soul”, was supposed to have Lil D rapping. Instead, because Andre had deadlines to make for creating each of the songs for the episodes, he or someone put his reference track on the album by accident!
Sometimes we strive for greatness as a formula and it works out, sometimes we fall short, but no one can ever question that its authentic and genuine effort put in. Tariq you could retire with zero "bangers" and you'd still be the GOAT of this shit man! Heres to many more vids!
Class of 3000 must've been one of those shows that didn't get a lot of play outside of the US bc I don't remember it ever airing in Canada. But I wish it did because looking at it now, it looks like I would've really liked it as a kid.
I’m about to order this on dvd now. Thanks for this video. I remember bits and pieces of this one. I’m 29 now and I’m hooked on my childhood cartoons , video games, and merchandise
The main things I remembered from this show were the record ep scene with Lil D drumming in a ham suit, and the gag of Sunny changing his shirt like 3 times in one scene.
as a kid i didn’t notice the “loud black girl” trope in cartoons, because i honestly didn’t grow up around any black kids (i’m an aussie), so there wasnt really a point of reference, if you know what i mean (didn’t get that perspective), but as i got into my early teens i started picking up on it due to the sheer amount of cartoons i watched. it was like, one in four cartoons had that character, and it was really eye opening to me in terms of poc rep. i never saw aussie characters in cartoons, which is why i really loved numbuh 4 in c:knd, he was legit the only one for a while there. but with numbuh 5, there were plenty like her, and 90% were also played by cree summer (i love numbuh 5 but you get the idea).. so even though there was quite a lot of representation for black girls, it was really all the same character, just in different shows and styles. i loved leshawna in tdi, and even though there was another black girl (katie), i would constantly see other characters like her in other shows, just not as well written. gotta say your videos have been really helpful in getting a better idea of representation in ‘toons, and that you should keep up the good work ^_^ thanks tariq!
Even if I'm not a fan, i try and watch the video at least once! I barely remember this show but I will gladly watch you (and Mann) talk about it for a bit! Love your content, please keep it up Tariq ❤️🤗
After gibing up on my goal of becoming a car designer at age 10, this show is one of the major factors that inspired me to pursue music as a profession. I am forever grateful for it!
Man Class of 3000 was great from start the music, the characters, the artstyle and animation being smooth imo it's the most under appreciate Cartoon Network show of all time when I think of animated musical it's always Class of 3000 this and Jackie Chan Adventures are the best celebrity cartoons ever made this was a excellent video on the show I'm glad it's getting being talking about little more.
This man did NOT use Green Light as a transition... The genius... Side note, I'm 21 and can't remember this show in the slightest. But I'mma STILL watch this cause it's you dude, and I love your work.
I've been holding the torch for this show for so many years! I watched Co3 religiously, yet still haven't met a friend who watched it when they were a kid, even my bestie who watching like only CN and is an animator. I think Class of 3000 shaped my love for jazz and was the reason I stuck with chorus from 3-8 grade. I was dropped from the course accidentally when transitioning to high school, but ended up in TV/Film Production instead, which is my current job; Happy accident. That aforementioned bestie was my partner in 2 years of that class, so my love of the art of animation grew even greater and made me really realize how special Class of 3000 was! Fantastic music, characters, morals, aesthetic, and vibe :) I may have been a chubby little white boy, but I spent my earliest years in Springfield, MA and spent a lot of summers and time with my predominantly black family, having cookouts, listening to music, so the vibe really brought me home during those first few years away. I really love this show and the video :) Sad to see it go due to a lawsuit.
The thing I remember most about this show was being very confused about technology having not really advanced in a thousand years. Had not realized that the title referred to Andre 3000, not the year in which the students would be graduating school, until several years later.
As a fellow black man, I agree wholeheartedly with the Tamika rant.. but the funniest shit about it is how the white nigga is in love with her LOL that’s a crazy ass dynamic
The thing I like most about this show is how ethnicly varied it is, the most beautiful thing of the American country is how people from all the parts of the world work together despite their differences
That cartoon was my favorite at the time when it came out, I remember going on the CN website and playing the music making game they made for it, it was so much fun, I need to go watch it again to be honest, also it really captured the culture in my hometown, and I honestly loved all the representation. I genuinely hope it gets a revival someday.
Much respect to you and your dedication to making these videos. Hearing and seeing your appreciation and fascination with animation is so inspiring to me. The ending even made me tear up a bit. Thanks for sharing and I hope you keep going :)

libby was the most normal and level-headed out of all the main kids in that show tbh
Class Of 3000 was an absolutely lit cartoon! it sucks that it got cancelled after only 2 seasons it totally deserves a revival!
If only it had a large enough cult following like Invader Zim.
It was before its time
Motown magic comes close imo
This cartoon was basically The Magic School Bus but teaching music theory instead of science. I've never seen a show like it before or since and I'm so glad to see someone doing a breakdown of what makes it so good. :)
Still insane to me how this show almost never had a single straight line
Sassy but not angry. She's closer to Kim
Lil D’s hat change makes sense: The Braves hat makes him Sonny’s symbol of Atlanta. Then he becomes Sonny’s ANCHOR
It still ain't going to change the fact that I never take responsibility for anything."
Still the best character of the series.
Lmao I had to pause the video I was laughing so hard 😂
I’m surprised he ain’t play blame game after that😂
Where in this video is that? I’m trying to clip it and show it to my friends
All the episodes are on TH-cam for free if you’re interested.
Jim!! So happy to see you loved outkast, you just got even cooler lol
I was heartbroken when this show stopped I LOVED it as a kid
The art style, the music, EVERYTHING
The crayon song was my personal favorite
I don't even remember how old I was last time I watched Jimmy Neutron, but with my nostalgia glasses on I honestly can't remember ever seeing Libby as the "angry black girl" vibe like, at all. Cindy is literally always angry or shouting at SOMEONE. Libby is only ever angry if something comes up. Is she loud often? Yeah, but it's because she likes music. I don't think that's a fair comparison at all when Cindy is more of an angry chick than she is lol
vocally screamed seeing this uploaded lmao
this show was a fucking gem, everything about it just...god it's so so good. so happy you're talking about it, i can't think of a better youtuber to bring this to people's attention
EDIT: oh sweet lord the romeo show, lol. all i remember is the episode where the kids went to a lumber museum
Ditto
I've never clicked on something so fast; this was my absolute favorite show as a kid! I remember when I watched the premiere!
And 44 minutes??! 👏😭
*Edit:* Yes! I was worried you wouldn't mention Al Hirschfeld but you did! 👏
Without a doubt, one of the most underrated CN shows
Class of 3000 was an absolute banger of a show. Shame it only ever got 2 seasons and then the swift sweeping under the rug by CN.
It was cause of a lawsuit
@@qdakid7776 it wasn't it was because budget constraints
People always say that shows are ahead of their time but that genuinely applies to Class of 3000.
Mans ain’t wanna tell me that it was actually a flute. I’mma remember this one.
19:28 Don't worry, you have every reason to say that!
It's a genuine issue with how black women and black girls are portrayed in media and more people need to take notice that this is a stereotype. It's of an era sure, but that doesn't excuse how it was so common throughout the 2000's with these characters.
Also why did a man of thousand thoughts sound like he was in a cave?
@@OooughaBooogahDracula right I know you heard that ambience 😭
Ah yes, I remember this show and it was sooooo good! The music, the animation, the voice acting. I love it! I mean I really wish this show was more well known
Not even the *sound barrier* could stop me the second this video dropped! Stay awesome, legend!
this is one of those shows where I remember loving it as a kid, but not being able to recall why I liked it. I remember the main reason it caught my attention was the style. 🤩
This show brings back so much nostalgia!! Def underrated!
The way the series introduced me to music, importantly taught me lessons through black influenced genres like funk and jazz from the South, it really still resonates to me till this day. And I can’t be the only one who played the FunkBox game back on the old CN website making my own songs.
Just before watching I gotta say "All we want is your soul" is such an amazing song and tells such a powerful message.
Lil' D had bars beyond belief out of nowhere
FINALLY YES. This show has lived in my head for like a decade!
Love that this was ur introduction to him!
The colors and music and how people just are interested show has always been something I haven't forgotten since watching. I appreciate being around to see it 🍀
I ain’t even watch the video yet but I love it already!!!! Class of 3000 was one of my FAVORITE cartoons growing up!!!
I had such a crappy day at work and i"m so stressed but this legit made my night. Thank you Tariq. I needed this so much. Great video as always hun!
I agree, saying libby is "the same" as tamika was weird to me. If anyone in that main group was the angry one it was cindy
@@tiablue9106 Right, cindy was the angry one.
Definitely one of my favorites.
libby always seemed like the more calm one compared to cindy, imo? disclaimer i'm a white guy so the nuance is probably not smth i'm too tuned into
i remember loving the episode where they went to egypt and libby changed her look after finding more about her ancestors, that felt so cool to me as a kid
"Rented out some theater in Atlanta" I'm just sitting here instantly recognizing it as the bomb-ass historic Fox Theater
I never watched this show as a kid, but I always thought that Andre's character was animated really handsome haha
I legit remember watching this show every night at my grandma's house and always being excited to watch it! Awesome video you guys.
Let’s GOOOOO I have so many of these songs on my phone and I listen to them religiously just for the groove love it!
If this show was made today, I think it would have been appreciated more. It just arrived almost two decades too soon 😔
This was how I was introduced to Andre 3000. I was about 5-7 years old at the time and this unlocked a whole memory ❤️🥰
DAMN IT!!!
D’s hat is just a Braves hat and just love that detail so much, especially because they picked the cleanest Braves hat design
Really hope the algorithm decides to push this video out cause it's a banger! I'll definitely check out the show, it looks amazing
Dude, I loved this cartoon growing up, but I had forgotten all about it because I didn’t remember the name. Thanks for bringing it back!
I remember playing that Kim and Kam song on the soundtrack all the time When I was little. Now it sounds weird listening to it years later.
Lmao nooooo
@@cfan6716 The awesome piano is now blocked out by weird woos and moans
@@FormalFilmsProductions I know. 😭😂
@@cfan6716 but at least we have the other songs to come back to
I’m 23 and still watch Class Of 3000, I remember when it first premiered back in 2006 and had the soundtrack (Still listen to that)
Andre 3000 is my favorite of rapper of all time and had his own TV Show?
Legendary🔥
This show was hip, cool, and fonky, I’m glad Tariq is givin’ it a look-see here when I conveniently got shit else to do
I didn't know this show existed until Comfort Cartoon opened a box of figures with an Andre 3000 figure mixed in with major Cartoon Network shows represented.
The class of 3000 theme song still hits even almost 2 decades later
Richer Shade of Blue is still smooth as fuck too
One interesting to note about Widescreen Copies of Class of 3000, they come from Australlia (excluding the christmas special but that one's im 240p anyway).
Due to this, a few scenes were censored out (CN AU always does this)
Such as in Episode 3 when Sunny Walks into oncoming traffic, or throughout Episode 3 with any showing or mention of Nitroglycerin (even though it's almost integral to the ending)
being original and in rythem to your original message is the basis for making a show that works for you and speaks to your audience.
Didn’t watch the show as a kid but my dad did have a cd of the show when I was little. We would play it all the time. Loved that so much
Holy shit, I didn't think I'd ever seen this show, but I strongly remember the line about Eddie's dad owning all of the stations, so I guess I have.
the connection to Rhapsody in Blue was 🤯 amazing pull, and one of my favorite Disney shorts of all time.
also probably explains why this show always stuck in my head
Kinda of wild how striking this art style is after such a long time.
Been waiting for you to cover this forever now, love Andre and I’m hyped to watch this!
I’ve been waitin for this review for so long. I loved this show as a kid and was blown that it didn’t last longer.
I still bump “Oh Peanut” to this day, I don’t care it’s 🔥and it always will be.
Same!
i adore andre 3000 and this cartoon. thank you for coming thru with this!
Yea! Been waiting for this one!
Same
The thing I remember most about this show was being very confused about technology having not really advanced in a thousand years. Had not realized that the title referred to Andre 3000, not the year in which the students would be graduating school, until several years later.
Honestly same
As a fellow black man, I agree wholeheartedly with the Tamika rant.. but the funniest shit about it is how the white nigga is in love with her LOL that’s a crazy ass dynamic
