The funny thing is that I remember how there was this bizarre belief that Tyler Perry's shows and movies were more indicative of Black Culture and whatnot but never "got them" or found what was entertaining about them as compared to the Boondocks which was also embraced the "Black Culture" aspect but went full ham and even presenting clever satire such as BET (Black Evil Television)

@@JJKane01 Well, it a whole new set of writers now. The show has had eras defined by their writers, like the first 3 seasons (golden), the next 4 to 11 seasons (post revival) and the 12 to current (after Seth left the writers room), and nearly each one feels like a completely different show. I like Jerome a lot actually. I do think he has been reduced to his race by the writers but I've always saw how kind he can be when the writers just write a character despite how rare it is they actually do that. I’m sad you didn’t mention it in your Cleveland section but it has one of my favorite moments in all of Family Guy, the episode where Cleveland finally gets angry and says he’s gonna kill Quagmire for sleeping with his wife. He works out, he gets angrier, he has him on the ground and has him dead to rights. But Cleveland puts down his bat really sadly and says “It’s not in my nature to harm someone, no matter how much they’ve harmed me.” Like that is such a wholesome moment, even after everything Quagmire did, and Cleveland keeping it bottled up, he’s too much of a chill guy to ever hurt someone like that. And then the episode ends with Quagmire feeling he got off 2 easy so he brings Cleveland into a boxing ring he apparently installed in his house just for this and do a Rocky homage. It’s just that kinda thing that made me love early Family Guy.
Now granted Chef and Tolkien being next to each other would only happen like once a day at lunch and from what we see in the show only the 4 main boys would talk to Chef about stuff, with Cleveland and Jerome, I mean there is this weird friendship Jerome was suppose to be the 4th member of the guys but wasn't and then Cleveland comes back and Jerome owns the bar the guys go to
@@nickrustyson8124 You don't see much of Jerome at the bar just like you didn't see much of the old bartender. That's why Peter and the guys sit at the booth instead of the bar stools because they don't talk to the bartender that much
I don’t hate Jerome, but they definitely could’ve done more with him. It's a miracle that they made him a recurring character at the very least and didn’t just write him off once Cleveland came back. Also, however you feel about The Cleveland Show, I still think it sucks that Cleveland’s family except maybe Donna gets the shaft, barely even having a speaking role.
The whole conflict of Jerome being overprotective doesn't really work when the episode confirms his fears multiple times. Chris clearly has no real interest in Pam and just wants to get laid.
I kinda struggled with this too because I was definitely thinking about this in editing. Still not really sure where I land on it personally. Regardless, I think it’s a good point.
They also kinda named him off as wrong….which I’m not saying hate someone just because they wait……but his overprotectiveness and unwillingness to see his daughter with a white kid is less racist and more of what happens when you’ve been judged right off the bat just for being black. Admittedly though it’s less idiotic than claiming he’s a racist because he wants a black friend…….when he’s literally black himself.
Jerome is such an underrated character, being more a token character than a actual 4th member when Cleveland was gone, I wish he had more of a presence like Mort had and when Jerome is around lately, it’s so short or a forgettable. Also I missed Jerome’s jacket and cross necklace combo. It makes him stand out more than just a tee and occasional apron.
Definitely. Jerome could've actually been a fleshed out character with his own personality and charm and not just this gateway into more black jokes much like how Mort was that gateway for Jew jokes, which can pretty much describe most of the show's side characters who are minorities. Some actually have personality and feel like a character while others just serve as a gateway for the altermentioned jab... Also a waste of talent as Kevin Michael Richardson has quite the vocal range

Hey toonriq, this is kind of a random comment, but thank you so much for your channel. Your video on why characters are black and your in depth analysis on black cartoon characters actually inspired me to do a presentation on representation of black people in media for college. the fact you shout out smaller/indie animations has earned so much respect man. people like you give those that dream to animate some hope, showing people still support the art.
The most significant thing about Jerome to me was that Kevin Michael Richardson used the same exact voice he gave Mr. Gus from Uncle Grandpa. So I'd close my eyes and pretend that Mr. Gus was saying all those things you can say in an adult cartoon. To the point I find the episode where Peter ruins the Clam and the picture of his mother funny, only because of that one Uncle Grandpa where Gus was stressing out about keeping the Ballroom clean and just threatening and intimidating the hell out of Uncle Grandpa and Pizza Steve. And at the risk of playing the American Dad card, look at his character from American Dad. Principal Lewis. One of the most batshit insane characters in a show comprised mostly of batshit insane characters, someone who can basically match or even outdo Avery Bullock. I'd say it's one of my favorite KMR characters. I think the problem is, they focus on Lewis's crazy while there's NOTHING to Jerome but "he's a black guy, but the cool 70's kind."
Your analysis of black characters within cartoons is always absolutely fantastic. I feel like there's such a lack of breakdown in regards to non white characters in animation and their roles/functions within stories and how they're treated by the writers. It's always fantastic to see people share their perspectives on matters like this as they're so lacking within animation discussion spaces, and I find your breakdown of black characters in animation to be incredibly well done and fascinating (with your Carl video being one of my favorite animation related video essays ever). Keep up the fantastic work.
Studies have shown that children, even brown or black ones, are naturally repulsed by darker skin tones Even blacks know how ugly their features are and thats why all "black" animated characters has white or mongoloid features with dark skin, when a large lipped nappy headed character is depicted it's "racist" - the most delicious irony is that you'll cry for representation but when it's done you realize how abominable you are as a species
20:47 I didn't want to mention it, but this continual self deprecation over the Peanuts videos is bumming me out lol. They hold so much sentimental value and like so many, they played an integral role in me discovering this channel from the jump. They're not trash.
“This was the show that realized that they had this character that they liked but did absolutely nothing with.” Just like they do with the rest of the cast that aren’t the Griffins.

Watching the whole thing it’s nice. Your Family Guy videos are so thoughtful in a way that I don’t see other people’s vids. But I think my feelings on Family Guy is just like my thoughts on Football. I used to despise it, but thanks to irl relationships I’ve grown to respect the game and culture, but I still won’t invest time into it. Your videos are the equivalent to those irl relationships. The Jerome vid is interesting, it’s like an inverse on the Carl video. I wish I could describe that but I just finished this and have to do irl stuff. Good vid Tariq,
6:34 Just to think this is the same episode where Quagmire was trying to act like he was on a more moral high ground than Brian. Also that Cleveland and Loretta segment in Love Blactually actually made me cry a little lol
Cleveland was probably the most likeable and wholesome character in earlier seasons of Family Guy. He had funny scenes that would have been just as funny if They had involved a character of any race. Adjectives that could describe him are calm, friendly, patient and chill. It was funny how he so enjoyed life's simple pleasures, like making Jiffy Pop. He had a lot of depth and an interesting background. A TV show with Cleveland as the star had so much potential. It could have used humor involving him being the straight man who contrasts the loud, wacky, obnoxious characters. He ended up becoming as much of a jerk as Peter. When The Cleveland Show needed a character to be the only calm and responsible one, they used Tim the bear. Cleveland became as one-dimensional as Peter, and Tim became the most interesting character with depth and background stories.
Your videos and the quality of them constantly amazes me. Like, the effort of the ad break and the plugging after the ad break, linking the playlist for the music used, and the editing itself along with the delivery and writing and just the takes/analyses themselves??? Woah lol I didn’t even do the science on that but you’re right. Unless the joke isn’t that she misspoke and that she actually said it on purpose to get under Peter’s skin, that’d mean they dated 12 years ago.
I am telling y'all. Cleveland is the best character on FG and, say what you will about it, part of it was because he had his own show to develop more. I actually prefer CS over every other Seth show (season 1 is rough for sure tho). It's a crime that his family is pretty much just non-existent now. Like why not let Rallo and Stewie be friends? They're so desperate for stories now that they are including Chris in the adventures with Brian and Stewie. C'mon now!

Damn bro, I could swear I saw you years ago on an LS Mark or Cosmodore (RIP lol) video. I’m just glad I found your channel: the care, dedication, and effort put into the video’s production is OUTSTANDING. This feels like a real show. You have no idea how much I appreciate that little ad break animation you did. It took me back to when I used to watch the Disney channel growing up, first time I ever enjoyed watching TH-cam ads. The way you make your announcements, too, just feels like more ad blocks but that’s a GOOD thing. Sponsors and ads usually feels intrusive but the way you directly integrate them into the video makes for such an enjoyable viewing experience. I'd say it's one of my favorite KMR characters. I think the problem is, they focus on Lewis's crazy while there's NOTHING to Jerome but "he's a black guy, but the cool 70's kind."
KMR has used this voice for a lot of characters.
I'm not a fan of modern Family Guy but I always enjoy your well constructed video essays giving me new perspectives on things. Keep up the great work
Your analysis of black characters within cartoons is always absolutely fantastic.
Studies have shown that children, even brown or black ones, are naturally repulsed by darker skin tones
Even blacks know how ugly their features are and thats why all "black" animated characters has white or mongoloid features with dark skin, when a large lipped nappy headed character is depicted it's "racist" - the most delicious irony is that you'll cry for representation but when it's done you realize how abominable you are as a species
Shit Jerome was a better friend to Cleveland then Peter, Joe, or Quagmire ever were-
i hate to admit it but the "how am i supposed to make it through airport security" line made me laugh lmaoo
I'm so tired. I'm not gonna do anything when I get home but fall right as--
*ToonrificTariq drops a video*
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
tariq is the best example of you can’t rush greatness
Freakin' sweet another Family guy video
Freakin sweet
Jerome is too cool for Family Guy, he deserved his own show more than Quagmire or Joe
yo a morgan and morgan sponsorship? thats fucking fly as hell
when that theme song hits you know its a good evening.
Unity…. That’s what we need
20:47 I didn't want to mention it, but this continual self deprecation over the Peanuts videos is bumming me out lol. They hold so much sentimental value and like so many, they played an integral role in me discovering this channel from the jump. They're not trash.
great vid tyriq, love your clean family-friendly style of humor!!
"Snarky Comment indicative of how you think your audience will react."
Dude, you're right... we are getting lazy.
“This was the show that realized that they had this character that they liked but did absolutely nothing with.”
Just like they do with the rest of the cast that aren’t the Griffins.
Except for Meg, cause Seth has no clue how to write a teenage girl.
@@TheBlackAntagonist it’s not seth tho , seth said he walked away from writing for family guy a long time ago. he basically clocks in and does his voices then clocks out
@@TheBlackAntagonist Seth hasn't been more than a voice actor for this show in years lmao.
Great, got it. Fuck sake.@@glennquagmire9737
Good vid Tariq,
dude i love your commentary
I’m glad you’re out here makin these, cause if it were me out there, I’d be way more mean towards the way Jerome was treated than you were 💀
Interestingly, Kevin Michael Richardson voiced Cleveland's hick neighbor that was also defined by his race.
6:34 Just to think this is the same episode where Quagmire was trying to act like he was on a more moral high ground than Brian. Also that Cleveland and Loretta segment in Love Blactually actually made me cry a little lol
One of my favorite creators on YT.
Hearing Quagmire go "sheeeiit" made my day 🤣🤣🤣
it was the sallie mad joke that got me
Great vid as usual also 16:01 that c students clip you put there gave me fuckin whiplash
YUHHHHH!!!! Tariq plz keep putting out these, it’s like crack
Your videos and the quality of them constantly amazes me. Like, the effort of the ad break and the plugging after the ad break, linking the playlist for the music used, and the editing itself along with the delivery and writing and just the takes/analyses themselves??? Fucking incredible. You're talented asf and I just wanted to let that be known lol. It's clear how much passion goes into these
We can all agree though that Kevin Michael Richardson is an amazing voice actor
Great video man! As someone who fell off of family guy years ago, I really enjoy your thoughtful analysis and clear passion for the show. Excited for the next one
20:47 😢 They'll always have a place in my heart
i think you're doing what's called 'critical discourse analysis' and you're doing it well 🙏 the level of care you've been putting into the past few videos has been incredible to watch. also love the little nod to tmnt that movie has not gotten the respect it deserves
One of the best movies of the year!
Since you brought it up you gotta do all of Megs wild relationships.
I'm too young, all I hear is Mr. Gus ...from Uncle Grampa....
MILK MAIDENS AND PALE RIDERS, I'm DEAD. That man has SLAYED me.
And if it's "pail riders" (as in: milk pail), then it's still hilarious.
About sixteen minutes in rn and loving it so far but C-STUDENTS REFERENCE IN 2023??? Took me off guard so quick 😭😭
I love Jerome, I’m glad they kept him around, even if they had to kill off Horace.
You keep bagging on your peanuts videos man. I know they didnt perform as well as your other videos and you may feel a bit stuck with only talking about black characters to get those numbers up. But the peanut videos made me a patron cause i literally mever seem any videos like that one and still never since. You put into words my childhood that my real life friends/family barely remember. I really really like those videos and seeing you trash on them every video afterwards kind of justs erode my like of them until i rewatch and enjoy it again. Your work makes me a fan of you, and you speak truth to power. Keep on man il be here till you stop making art
4:46 So basically Lois just confirmed that she had a affair with Jerome while Meg was 5 and Chris was 2.
Woah lol I didn’t even do the science on that but you’re right. Unless the joke isn’t that she misspoke and that she actually said it on purpose to get under Peter’s skin, that’d mean they dated 12 years ago.
Just so you know, I don't watch Family Guy and still love these videos, Tariq. That's a mark of a talented creator.
C'mon now!
I'm livid you cut the Conductor tag out of 8am in Charlotte but good ass video as always.
Been trying to get an interview with you, sent an email and hoping we can link up down the line and talk about blackness and cartoons.
Tariq the GOAT.
Your videos are always so high quality & such a vibe. I always leave with a sense of serenity and happiness. Black excellence fr. Very inspirational. Keep doing you, Tariq! 💖
“Ma!! Ma!! Tariq uploaded!” 💪🏽
31:15 - my uncle called to tell me that exact thing when he found out I was dating a white guy in college, which was… fun.
You are amazing at what you do and I wanted you to know it is greatly appreciated! Keep it up!
24:30 I feel like this often with queer people. I have non-queer friends and I wouldn't say I'm prejudiced, but queer people and I just have so many shared experiences and are targeted by the same society of people who want us to gone. If someone tried to say I'm "heterophobic" for wanting a queer friend, I'd be pretty irate.
16:00 C-STUDENTS MENTIONED🗣️🔥‼️WHAT IS A SECOND EPISODE ‼️🧨🔥🗣️I really do want that second episode tho
Not all black dudes got pipe like that. Lisa ann has talked about how the porn industry is toxic for not allowing black men under a certain size from being on film
and that's the fetishization that lil bill was talking about...
The fetishism
I was so busy trying to stop laughing at the bbc joke that when i didnt laugh at the other joke and got called out i started laughing again😭😂😂 very solid video. I liked the points about black people in society and it is always nice when black characters feel like real characters yeah
Your intro is amazing!!! Keep up the good work!!
I absolutely love when Tariq drops a new vid especially about Family guy. makes however long it is pass by quickly and just makes you want more.
I like the peanuts specials
We eating this weekend yeahhhhh
Just when I thought I had a bad day- my favorite youtuber posts!!
"Who else but Quagmire gonna catch these fuckin' hands!"
That joke alone is worth unsubscribing so I can subscribe again. I nearly suffocated!
16:00 Was that a fucking Animated James Reference!!!???😂😂😂😂
your editing style is the best on TH-cam
Cleveland’s Blackness not being central to his character is why I never cared about Mike Henry voicing him
His voice didn't even sound "white" to me. I've seen black men who have similar voices to his and voices don't really have a race anyway.
An actor should be able to act as whatever they want. The new guy is nothing but a pale imitation to Mike Henry.
@@AarturoSc its a very complicated issue sadly.
@@hope-cat4894Cedric Yarbrough and Phil Lamarr. Two Black guys that sound WHITE.
Another solid video. Hope you've been doing alright lately, your video quality is always peak so I hope you're not burning yourself out with all the gold. And don't worry about the Peanuts stuff, it's not worth doing if you already got it out of your system.
Uh... Crown emoji.
Yo Toon drops another long hour banger. Can’t wait to watch this one
listening to the Thank the Whites song...
I'm beginning to see why this show is so popular with conservatives
What?
@mechajay3358, right wing or traditional mindset people.
i’m having such a toonrific time
Aw shit, the party has arrived.
Okay but the line of I never committed the crime in my life but then admitted to sleeping with a 17yr old is wild
