Omg I love you ! You’re the best and made this makes sense. Better than the dumb lab manual & book I bought for my class. Especially explaining how the control tube could be red and the liquid inside the durham tube is yellow and it’s still negative!
My microbiology professor says that yellow inside the Durham tube still indicates that fermentation has taken place. Although it is rare, sometimes the bacteria can get trapped inside the Durham tube. Following your rule that a mixed result with yellow inside the Durham tube indicates a negative result for the test led me down the incorrect path in determining an unknown bacterium. 😞
What is the explanation for the scenario you gave where there can be red and yellow in the test tube? Can it be that the amount of carbon source you added is too much. So they will ferment some of it and then leave the other (which would be indicated by red)?
Hi sir, So the first tube showing yellow color without gas formation is negative for coliforms. Second tube is positive and the third one is negative. Pls reply.
Hi professor, Im actually confuse. Anything in glucose, mannitol and sucrose that is yellow is positive? and anything color red is negative? am i right?

So there is a way to ferment carbs in gluten free grains for keto/low carb diets?!
Phenol red (acidic - yellow colour), red means - not fermented.
is this same as oxidation fermentation test?
Thx
