@ Nickelodeon despite their live action toxic work environments and more as we saw this year. They always felt diverse especially in the 90s and early 2000s
One thing that a lot of people dont notice, it took a long time for me to notice too. When helga is saying Merry Christmas to arnold in the final shot in the snow she is only wearing her socks. Meaning she literally gave arnold the shoes off her feet. That just further proves how much arnold means to helga.
One of the things I miss about old cartoons especially during the 90s and early 2000s is a lot of them weren't afraid to tackle serious topics such as war, death, different religions and cultures. What was great about cartoons tackling serious topics (such as what was happening in Mr.Wynd's story), those kids (such as myself) who grew up with this genre had something to look back on by the time we learned about them later in life.
Thanks so much for doing this one! True, none of it takes place at school, but for those of who grew up in the 90's, it truly is a memorable and heartfelt Christmas episode.
I feel like nowadays social media would help him find his daughter very easily. Pre-social media, this is perhaps taking great lengths to find someone you haven’t seen in years.
Congratulations on approximately 10k subscribers. That is a very impressive accomplishment. Just keep on creating content and you’ll eventually get 15k, 20k, 25k subscribers and much more. I love your TH-cam channel
16:00 - 16:10 This was a common trope back in the "Married: with Children" days. It happened to Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie 'Jingle all the Way' 😋
If you had a daughter in Helgas position & she told you why the boots were given away. Would you be mad, proud, annoyed, confused, or some other feeling?
This is a great episode I remember watching in the 90's. Interested about Helga I have a recommended episode called "Helga on the Couch" where a psychiatrist visits the school, and after Helga cause an incident that she is punished by seeing her. There is an opening about having a psychiatrist being a visitor in the school, and importantly will Helga tells the psychiatrist her secret crush about Arnold. Also, Merry Christmas.
I assume with Miriam being an alcoholic, the show assumes that she'll forget about the shoes fairly quickly, or remember it as something that happened some other year, and maybe if she doesn't see the boots it won't trigger the memory. But personally, I always wondered the same thing.
To be fair, Yankee doodle dandee was written during the revolutionary war, which is when General Washington led his troops in the battle of Trenton back on Christmas Day, a crucial battle in '76
I think Nancy Spumoni and the snow boots are based on Nancy Sinatra and her song “These Boots Are Made For Walking”. This show also has a singer named Dino Spumoni, they never say if he’s related to Nancy but I heard somewhere he’s based on Frank Sinatra.
I also always assumed that Nancy Spumoni was supposed to be the daughter or some other relative of Dino Spumoni, although I can't remember off the top of my head if that name is ever mentioned anywhere else in the series, including in Dino Spumoni episodes.
Oskar is funny cuz everyone gets mad at him cuz he only cares about himself but he does things to get his own way comically. When you're an adult the adults are actually funnier then the kids.
Oskar episodes are always wild. Won't say nothing more. Spoilers. I really hope he'll just watch the whole series at some point or at least more episodes both at school and out of school. Hey Arnold is one of the greatest cartoons from its era.
This is probably one of the saddest, but at the same time most beautiful Christmas specials that there is in a series for children ^^ Even though it's still a few days away, I wish you all a Merry Christmas 🎄🎅🎁 and a Happy New Year! 🎆🎉🍾
This one tugs at the heartstrings. It has more meaning now as an adult, and plus my father who passed away in late October last year had served in Vietnam.
@@hyicrotai9801 Haunted Train would be a good one for him to do during spooky season! Or Ghost Bride! Or Four-Eyed Jack! Or The Headless Cabbie! Man, Hey Arnold did some great spooky episodes. Then there's Arnold's Halloween which, while not exactly spooky, is at least the official Halloween episode lol.
9:30 It is weird that this is the second time dot matrix printers came up today. I also just realized that the guys name was Mr. Bailey which I assume is supposed to be a reference to It's a Wonderful Life.
I rewatch this episode the day before Christmas every year. It's a personal little tradition of mine (we celebrate on the 24th here). So, being the day before, it was really fun to stumble upon this video. Cheers and merry Christmas! ✌️🎅 (I forget what episode it is, but I hope you'll react to "Helga on the Couch" at some point 🫡) I looked it up and forgot how I typed that message out
When i was in school we did kris kringles. Honestly it was the best! Trying to figure out what to get your person and trying to figure out who had u. What impresses me most about this episode is they use something silly like kris kringle to launch a beautiful story of arnold trying to bring a long lost father and daughter back together for christmas. Seriously the best episode of this show and the best christmas episode of any show really. I watch it every year and I cry every time I see it. Thank you for taking the time to watch though it is not school related. But as i mentioned before there are some pretty good school related episodes- tutoring torvald, bio square, the flood, helga on the couch, student teacher, school play, egg story, back to school, and false alarm
After losing someone 4 years ago and never heard from her with the last words " i swear i come back my good boy" i can feel this story but the reality dont offers a happy end for all of us i guess o.+ heart hurts every christmas and every day but no wonder here, great reaction afterall and merry christmas, glad to see this important videos are open for all to have a great time together without paywall.
Thank god we have online shopping. Seeing how hard it was for Arnold and Gerald to do the guy’s Christmas shopping and that guy did not do any Christmas shopping at all, at least now we have a back up option to buy stuff and get it delivered to our residency and not have to go walk in the store and buy Christmas presents
You should watch the as told by ginger Christmas episode. It’s really not centered around Christmas related but more towards what really constitutes a family. Ginger grew up in a single mom household with the dad long gone while the brother Carl just wants not to even know his dad as he believes that their dad abandoned the family for his own selfish reasons. The mom is a nurse working the ER. The dad does appear but it’s not exactly a happy reunion as it’s like meeting a stranger for the first time. They aren’t exactly rich more like lower middle class. Just ginger is trying you know. As told by ginger is more middle school kids trying to get through another day and the societal norms they try to navigate. It does go to high school though at the third season. It’s definitely not hey Arnold or rugrats. It dealt with a bit more serious issues like dark thoughts or the class bully or the rich girl, even a major wedding. It didn’t hide much just people trying to deal with problems.
9:33 The Dot Matrix Printer!!! 🖨️ I miss those. ASMR has nothing on the dot matrix. And the satisfaction of *watching* the paper print out in a continuous roll instead of sheet by sheet like modern printers, the way it folded itself so neatly... **chef's kiss** perfect
Wow. I had a long post with every thought and tidbit I had along the way watching this with you and for some reason it appears as though TH-cam removed it. WTH, YT? Anyway I loved watching this and hearing your commentary along the way. This is one of the greatest christmas episodes of any cartoon ever. Very wholesome. Let's see, some of the comments I remember: Jamie-O is Gerald's older brother. Timberly is Gerald's younger sister. Helga's home life is extremely sad and depressing. Hey Arnold ran from 1996-2004. Well, I had much more than that lol. No idea why YT would have deleted it. Cheers!
Helgas parents are neglectful and hardly care much this one of the only few times they cared and it’s possible they wont even notice if she wears them or not.
When I was in sixth or seventh grade, my homeroom class did Pollyanna. I think that's what New Jersey and Pennsylvania call Secret Santa. I either got my classmate, the board game, Trouble or I got the game. Either way, the board game Trouble was involved. I forgot who got it. Maybe me? But the person i got, she actually had my name too.
1:03 Good grief Helga! What does she think she’s celebrating? Christmas or Black Friday😂?…But in all seriousness, this is actually one of my favorite Nickelodeon Christmas specials. It’s just really one those specials that truly do give you the holiday feels, especially with this last part 26:16. Dag! This is tugging at my heart strings.😢 (not actually crying. It’s just so touching)
18:09 I'm pretty sure if Arnold said i'm not giving you the rest of the items Mr Bailey would just call the police. He did still spend 300 dollars of his money. Also even though it's a bad thing to do, it's not against the law to break your promises.
Helga on the couch pretty much lays her story bare and the framing device is her being required to speak to a school appointed child psychologist so it wouldn’t be too off brand
This is your first real taste of Helga I think and I'm so happy. She's such an awesome and interesting character. The whole reason I like this show. Only Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 and Pokemon XYZ have as good of ships in my opinion.
@the fact that helga only bullies Arnold to mask her true feelings for him is one of the few storylines that runs throughout the entire show all the way to the finale movie
@@JohnSmith-jh6ey You know as a Kid I always wondered why Helga acted mean towards Arnold throughout the show’s run when literally Arnold didn’t do anything mean and spiteful to Helga considering in one of the episodes in a later season when Helga’s parents ignored her and refused to take her to school resulting in getting mud in her clothing during the rain, Arnold was the only person who showed compassion and kindness towards Helga.
Hi There Sir Principal Brandon! Like Is It Against School Code For School Staff To Give Each Other Christmas Presents Or Does It Depend Sir Principal Brandon!?
Interesting fun fact the voice actor for Mr. Hynn was a Vietnamese immigrant himself and lived through the Vietnam war
Yeah, apparently he even helped the script writer with that part. It meant a lot to him to get it right.
Even back then, they had some great moments of Asian rep; however limited it might've been
@ Nickelodeon despite their live action toxic work environments and more as we saw this year. They always felt diverse especially in the 90s and early 2000s
It's not really surprising since most Vietnamese immigrants left Vietnam due to the war and its aftermath
A heartwarming ep, and a favorite of mine, especially when we learn Gerald's father was a Vietnam Vet, likely the soldier who helped out that man.
This is a beautiful Christmas special. Mr. Hyunh has finally reunited with his daughter. What's a wonderful and heartwarming moment

I never understand why people do Christmas shopping on Christmas eve and on Christmas, I did my Christmas shopping in September
Me too!
Very few times I ever cried because of a cartoon. Mr Hyunn’s story about the Fall of Saigon is one of those.
