Whether or not it was intentional, this episode is viewed by most as a "family friendly" depiction of a school shooting. With Curly threatening students and staff with his own form of weaponry, making negotiations, going off on mad tirades, etc. And this was only a year before Columbine happened mind you.
If you thought Curly was overreacting in this episode, you should review "False Alarm" where he almost gets a classmate expelled over said classmate's treatment of a pencil he borrowed from Curly.
Arnold has the curse of being the shows main protagonists and has all aspects of what you would expect a main character to have. Arnold is the considered to be a "problem solver," the more you watch the show the more you'll see characters (including adults) constantly coming to him with their problems and Arnold too also has a habit of helping people with their problems even when they don't want him to. This is why Curly as well as many other characters trust Arnold.
When I was in elementary school (so this must have been sometime around the late 90’s/early 2000’s) we had an incident where a kid just completely flipped out over something (can’t even remember what) and was just running wild through the school, even physically attacked and bruised the principal. They evacuated all the students out into the playground, the police were called, and yes it was his last day ever at that school. But for years after that incident we referred to that day as “The Day (kid’s name) Snapped” in reference to this episode. Hey Arnold! was a very popular show back then.
Hey Arnold was one of those TV shows loved by many. Sometimes it was silly fun, but others, it really didn't mind tackling matters of abandonment, alternative families, parental neglect, responsibility or self improvement, to name a few.
Another great hey Arnold episode is “Buses, Bikes, and Subways.” At least the beginning and the end, it is about the students on a field trip that goes wrong.
Fun episode and reaction. Such overreaction from Curly. Glad things didn't take an even darker turn and that it's only dodgeballs. I recommend the Hey Arnold episodes "The Spelling Bee" and "Helga on the Couch".
@@SchoolPrincipalReacts I would keep "Helga on the Couch" in the bank until you have more Helga episodes under your belt first. "Spelling Bee" would be a good place to start for Helga episodes though as it has school parts while also showing a little bit into Helga's depressing home/family life. Just my opinion of course.
You have to keep in mind Curly was not exactly mentally sound to begin with. Also some people don't have a lot in their life and the one responsibility or object they have can count a lot more to them if they don't have a lot. If they're denied something like that with those circumstances at play, they can go crazy.
You keep mentioning how Curly was in the wrong like it's obvious, but you have to keep in mind Curly was not mentally sound to begin with. It may be obvious to us but not to him. I mean this is the kid who had at one point bit the head off a chicken and painted himself with Tiger stripes and freed all the animals at the zoo!
I’ve noticed that some of the shows from my childhood are still funny. It isn’t the same as when I was a kid but it is still amusing. You fell in love with all of these people even though they weren’t real. You wanted them to be real.

You know I work for an elementary school and I always thought the students were just ordinary kids. But after watching this I never realized how intense things at an elementary school could become, from a principal's point of view at least.
I was the TA for a sculpting/Crafts teacher and she locked her key ring inside the lock box display for the finished art. It was a cheap Masterlock and I was working on a chicken wire sculpture... so I took a piece of wire and raked the lock and got it to open in like 10 seconds... cause it was a cheap lock. I was using the tools I needed already. I still remember the look on her face though, people really think locked things are safe... the Janitor can get in any lock.
P.S. She actually questioned me about how I knew that cause people were breaking into lockers at the time... but I just said 'yeah but don't they break the locks?' not realizing being able to get in without damage is a worse look, but it wasn't me doing it so I wasn't nervous answering. They eventually caught the kids breaking open lockers cause they had heavy duty 24" bolt cutters in their backpack and someone saw.
I didn't watch this show regularly as a kid but as an adult it seems like this episode was written as a parody of the 1976 movie _Network_ about a struggling news show anchor who tries to boost ratings by making unhinged angry rants about the state of the world, Curly's quote at 8:05 is directly paraphrased from that movie though the original obviously used stronger language.
My favorite parody of that rant is Stanley Spadowski the janitor from Weird Al’s movie UHF’s “these floors are dirty as [heck] and I’m not gonna take it anymore!”
9:44 this is reminding of scenes in movies and other shows where a criminal is in a building mostly with a hostage and threatening the police to give them their demands
This show is about Arnold being a peace-keeper to his friends and family. They are all very much out of their minds, so Arnold has a lot of work to do.
5:20 yeah that’s always a plot hole that the teachers aren’t around until it’s convenient for the episode. I’m kinda been guilty of that in some the books I’ve written back in 2010
11:02 yeah he should have his keys. I admit I’ve accidentally locked myself out of the house a few times because I forgot my key so I had to get some back up alternatives to solve that issue
9:28 okay this made me laugh hard, it’s completely serious in a real world perspective, but to be fair, Principal Wartz deserves some kind of comeuppance 😂
Yeeeess!! Finally a new Hey Arnold Reaction! 👍 would also recommend a spooky episode of Hey Arnold for Halloween. either "the ghost bride", "the haunted train" or "four-eyed jack". I hope one of these episodes comes as a reaction ^^
Thank you for disagreeing when Helga said "Never trust the quiet ones, they'll go bonkers." People who are shy, have social anxiety, just socially awkward or just like to keep to themselves and not talk much are always unfairly judged.
Some incidents I can remember from my time at school were a couple of girls in my first year of middle school being expelled because they were found out to be stealing stuff out of other kids' bags and a girl in my first year of high school who got suspended for like half the school year for showing up high (cannabis presumably). One more thing that made the news after I had already graduated was that one of the students drowned in the school pool, apparently during class with the teacher present but apparently too indecisive to save him. Hearing about that made me remember how I once had a bag stolen from me in that same gym area at the back, which my family briefly raised a fuss about but apparently not to the point where the administration had bothered to make enough changes to prevent that.
Hey Arnold is known for hiding dark topics with silly premises. Pidgeon man is another one, Stoop kid, and this one well Curly is supposed to be a shool schooter allegory. Loner kid wronged, snapped, takes it out on those around him... just played really silly, as it should for a kids show. The effect it had on kids thinking was still the same, this episode makes kids empathize with Curly.
I'm so glad to see more Hey Arnold on here! I truly hope you will do more soon. This episode was supposed to be the "crazy g*nman" episode, but they did it with Curly throwing dodgeballs instead of bullets and gave him an out in the end, even if he did receive a week's worth of detentions for his actions (I agree it should have been more severe than that). Until next time, cheers!
9:30 he freed all zoo animals painted like a tiger for not being invited to a party he dressed like a ghost bride because he didn't get to tell a story he treated another student like a wild animal just because the were watching a play with a bull fighter and finally he way overreacted his death in the episode school play
Come on, people. He's throwing balls, not firing a gun. That's a scary thought; Curly in school with a gun. But seriously, this isn't that big of a deal. Call the police or something.
I think another danger in a situation like this is that the student could be a danger to themself which is another reason to get into that room as swiftly as possible. I would also assume that the head custodian would also have a spare key to the office and any locked door in the school as well just in case, right? Then again, I suppose older schools may only have the one key, idk.
If a child is acting the way curly is acting, you don’t ever want to use aggression and force cause that escalates the situation. Using force on a child you believe to be mentally disturbed only furthers the problem. You don’t get anywhere until the child is calmed down
6:36 I think a lot of this is because the writers are adults and write the child characters as something close to adults, showing why they don’t have supervision going to lunch or going around town. Arthur is kinda the same way that the kids freely walk around town and go to each other’s houses. Gave me unrealistic expectations as a kid 😂 you definitely could NOT just freely go around town
I'm watching this episode, and I just noticed something that looks weird to me. 7:17 The door says, "Mr. Wartz: Principal" as normal. 8:55 The door now says, "Mr. Wartz: Princiral."
So for some context, the writers confirmed this episode is a indirect metaphor for school shootings they wanted to make an episode on the topic because there were alot at the time, so that's why the actions of everyone seems bizzare
@LawrenceUnknown106 hmm I probably wrong since my source was just a TH-camr who breaks down hey Arnold episodes and that TH-camr usually has highly informed takes so I don't really know and I'm not gonna pretend to know
I am planning on it - it’s on my list. Let me know if you have a favorite episode or one you want me to start with. By the way, thanks for being such a loyal channel member!!!!! 😀
Bah! Hit delete instead of edit. Anyways, I think the bell was supposed to signal it was the end of the day, which is why you have a bunch of students milling about in the hallways and doing things like independent studies. Which doesn't explain why Simmons missed Curly missing from class, but does explain why he was eating alone with no students. Which is weird, given that they then go back to class afterwards, however, given that they go back to view Mr. Simmons' vacation slides, and that Wartz takes Curly to an expressly after school detention, I imagine that's just for the sake of bringing the temperature down.
There are two hey Arnold episodes that do support the idea that currently may have some mental issues false alarm and ghost bride, I think that’s the reason why he doesn’t just discuss it. He may lack the people skills to do that.
I guess in a weird way it makes sense (the kids taking being a ball monitor so seriously, I mean). My elementary school made a really big deal out of being a safety patrol, so we felt like it was a huge deal, in reality, you're just a kid with a sash and the ability to use a fire extinguisher and to guide people off the bus in the event of a crash that will likely never happen on your watch.
"Why can he trust Arnold and not anybody else?" - Arnold just has that reputation around the school. EVERYONE knows him as that one kid you can always trust and who always has good advice even if it's kind of inconvenient (because the kids don't often like to be lectured about doing the right thing, naturally). There's an episode that explores this further when someone bets Arnold that he can't go a week without "butting into people's business", which is really just a thinly-veiled way for everyone to tell him to stop lecturing them and he takes them up on the bet. Of course, by the end of the episode, they come running back to him when all their bad ideas come back to bite them in the you-know-what. Also I feel like a lot of your questions and criticisms of Curly and his behavior can be easily answered by "He's crazy". He's very much an "unwell" individual. lol
i feel like the details that needs to get worked out as for the week of ball monitor duty would be after a long term suspension of at least a see you next week suspension and then you're immediately made ball monitor because the negotiation where he gets what he asked for, the after school detention where he still goes to school each day, gets 1 week of responsibility the following week but for those two weeks of detention is basically more responsibility. instead of sitting around writing essays and otherwise doing nothing and being bored, cleanup club. you want responsibility, here you go, have it. maybe the school could do with a nice garden depending on the time of year. there's ways to give a thorough yet appropriate punishment for the lockdown where you said this is expulsion and with the reasonable doubt of "they're only kickballs" if he threw books or anything like had the siege gone long enough for all 498 kickballs to be somewhere in the hallowed halls of the PS118 maybe that's when you call the police because actual assault charges can be filed. run laps, clean the school, prepare tomorrow's lunches, basically a variety of tasks that could lead to Curly and the principal becoming friends. if the teacher drops it, the students will keep quiet. its the principal enforcing the school's laws therefore preparing the students for adult life by once again having school be a miniature simulacrum of the real world. the show School of the Elite where they give you 100,000 Yen at the start of the school year even at the lowest rank, D Class and everyone's thinking that's a monthly wage but they are given a reality check: that's an investment in your future and if you're not going to take it seriously neither are we. if you want money then raise your rank. if you want to raise your rank then challenge a higher ranked class to a quiz battle. one will be prepared on a variety of subjects and you prepare accordingly. by the way, A Class gets 1M Yen per month so there's a good reason to want to climb. the island the school is on doesn't let people leave or enter but its basically a city with everything you would want or need, amusement centers and convenience stores and cafes and restaurants and the convenience store has a small free bin of basic necessities on a first come first serve basis where the items in the free bin are replenished times a day. i think that the negotiation would not have gone as smoothly in the hey arnold episode had the teacher not made a mistake in scheduling who has the ball monitor duty on that week. thank you for taking the time to read my comment sorry for going off on that tangent.
I know this is an extreme example, but this is pretty much exactly how kids react to their emotions. Their reasoning faculties (which are still developing) go all the way offline until you calm them down. This is where we see tantrums. It might seem like a young kid is reacting to something in a way that's completely illogical, but their brains are still 'under construction.' Also, by and large, we do a terrible job teaching kids (and each other!) how to manage emotions. I hope this helps to explain Curly's behavior a bit. He's acting fairly normal (outside of the tresspassing/violence aspect).
Thank You for reacting to one of my favorite episodes of Hey Arnold. Curly definitely would not be allowed at this school based on his actions. He’s lucky he just got detention, I would have to suspend him or maybe expel him if I was the principal.
Forgot the name of the episode. There's a episode about a class trip to the chocolate factory and I'd love to see your reactions to Mr Simmons handling the situation
To the viewer he should've been expelled for falsely pulling the fire alarm framing another student and doing it to multiple fire alarms after being busted then laughing crazy so I feel you
Btw Brandon with October ending soon and Thanksgiving next thought I’d let you know Hey Arnold has a Thanksgiving episode you could review based around it sir
Would you be down with watching Alvin and the Chipmunks? The second movie has school scenes, and the Nick show has a bunch too. If I remember correctly, one is called Un-Send.
To be clear he is bullied not as much as the main character but he said he likes the perks 1 leaving class early going back late and the power to decide who gets a ball honestly I think it isn't worth it
@LawrenceUnknown106 that particular treatment severely shortened after season 2 rhonda's glasses 2nd and my reply was right did you read mine I watched that show as a kid also it's in the episode
I assume the kids were supposed to be in class with another teacher, and that's why Mr. Simmons was just eating. What teacher? Well... This is one of many animated series where the students of a specific class are used as extras in most scenes as if they were the only students in the entire school ("The Simpsons" is an interesting example, because it shows that both Bart and Lisa have the same classmates, despite being 2 years apart), hence why only a handful of kids and literally two adults are seemingly the only ones aware of the chaos Curly is causing. Well, animating characters individually requires time and money.
SO imo, I think under the funny overreactions of it all, it does speak about how repeated bullying of someone or someone having a hard time making friends to the point where you crave that attention so bad they do something like this is something to look out for. I think it was intentional to show that the other kids hated being ball monitor, it was never actually about the job for Curly, he wasn't daydreaming about collecting kickballs he was daydreaming about kids finally being nice to him. I also like how it shows how your view of things shift so drastically based on your mood. There was nothing wrong with holding the door and letting someone go in front of you at the fountain ect ect in the daydream bc they were praising him and being buddy buddy with him as it was happening he was liked and had "friends" But when it really happened and he realized nothing had changed afterward, that he wouldn't get the "respect" or what I believe he really was after being friendship and fellowship, his view changed entirely to people just taking advantage of him and being mean to him. That disappointment was so severe it led to this whole fiasco. So I think the lesson sums up to little things and repeated behaviors add up over time and when someone finally "snaps" it can be over something small or insignificant but its because that was just the last straw. When you let things build and build till the tower is wobbling back and forth, it only takes a small wind to knock it over. so yeah this is just my over thought out take. I could be way off base though.
I hate to say but as bad a principal as he is, Wartz is kind of spot on >.> you don’t think much of curly when he’s not important to anything but when he is … he’s just like this. Pretty much. He’s a menace. For another hey Arnold episode I’d recommend “False Alarm”
Try doing a reaction of a Hey Arnold episode from season 4: "Egg Story"! Sadly I forgot the episode number, but I guarantee you, you'd get a kick out of Rhonda and Harold's chemistry with the egg!
I feel like the whole "Could the teacher be wrong? No, of course not, that's not like him" attitude is part of the problem we have in public schools today. As fast as that thought came into his mind it was just as quickly thrown away. And Mr. Simmons WAS wrong the whole time. So even when a teacher IS wrong a principal won't even consider it. Even if they do consider it then it doesn't matter, the student is the problem. Let the teachers be wrong without consequence, nothing bad has ever happened by letting teachers just be wrong.
Did he do a reaction to the the episode about sid and principal wartz soap doll episode that episode was crazy I'd love to see a reaction of that episode
Whether or not it was intentional, this episode is viewed by most as a "family friendly" depiction of a school shooting. I recommend the Hey Arnold episodes Hookey (season 2), Eugene Goes Bad (season 2) and Helga on the Couch (season 4).
And Teachers Strike, Crush on Teacher, The Longest Monday (all season 2), Phoebe’s Little Problem (season 5), New Bully on the Block (season 5).
He should just react to the whole series
I have history with Hey Arnold. I've seen this episode many times. Which was the Last Episode the character Ruth appeared, I think.
Wow 😮
you should react to the Hey Arnald episode Full Moon ,Student Teacher, Rondas Glasses and Back to School
Since it’s October do you think you could react to Danny phantom? Since it may fit in the Halloween spirit
There this video game episode that have Danny facing his school problem... maybe he can react to that?
Nice reaction. Might I suggest "False Alarm" and "Spelling Bee" next if you do any more Hey Arnold
Thanks!!!!
Mr. Simmons has blood on his hands!
Now react to the Hey Arnold episode "False Alarm".
So for some context, the writers confirmed this episode is a indirect metaphor for school shootings they wanted to make an episode on the topic because there were alot at the time, so that's why the actions of everyone seems bizzare
They weren’t a lot at the time this was before columbine but it was a rising issue for sure
@@pleaseshutup7053 ahh, my bad thank you for the calm correction.
@@princeOpalite3650 yea no worries. It is concerning that this episode has aged incredibly well
@LawrenceUnknown106 hmm I probably wrong since my source was just a TH-camr who breaks down hey Arnold episodes and that TH-camr usually has highly informed takes so I don't really know and I'm not gonna pretend to know
Curly is definitely despicable... insane even.
Would highly recommend reacting to some king of the hill school scenes!
I am planning on it - it’s on my list. Let me know if you have a favorite episode or one you want me to start with. By the way, thanks for being such a loyal channel member!!!!! 😀
Ever see Dan Vs? I swear Curly grows up into the main character of that show- Dan
In the suspended episode, Harold called principal Wartz a stupid dork
There are two hey Arnold episodes that do support the idea that currently may have some mental issues false alarm and ghost bride, I think that’s the reason why he doesn’t just discuss it. He may lack the people skills to do that.
React to Monsters University (either full movie or most scenes)
Good idea!
Good point! Thanks for watching! 😎👍
He only got detention for a week, Curly is usually well behaved.
Try a reaction to Jimmy Neutron episode, "Jimmy for President"
That’s a good school related episode
This isn’t the craziest thing you’ll see Curly do 😂
Oh no 😂

If I remember right the Scottish girl is part of this Girl Scout type group that talks in Scottish accents for whatever reason.
Camp Fire Lass
Yeah I think this was their most notable appearance: th-cam.com/video/yTpCTEWKpwM/w-d-xo.html
Now, they discovered Curly’s dark side
This is a 90s kid show detention is all principals know how to do 😂 on either end of the spectrum
Forgot the name of the episode. There's a episode about a class trip to the chocolate factory and I'd love to see your reactions to Mr Simmons handling the situation
To the viewer he should've been expelled for falsely pulling the fire alarm framing another student and doing it to multiple fire alarms after being busted then laughing crazy so I feel you
review the episode of full house about (think its either child abuse or neglect) its really good at getting the point across
side note yes replying to my own comment you could also do the ones about either the smoking situation or the peer pressure alcohol episode
And the cigarette episode
@@pleaseshutup7053cig ep is the peer pressure ep for steph in full house
Btw Brandon with October ending soon and Thanksgiving next thought I’d let you know Hey Arnold has a Thanksgiving episode you could review based around it sir
Cool thanks
Would you be down with watching Alvin and the Chipmunks? The second movie has school scenes, and the Nick show has a bunch too. If I remember correctly, one is called Un-Send.
Yes
I wonder if this kid's been bullied and the ball monitor seemed like the only good thing left.
Are you going to react to full moon & wired cousin from hey Arnold?
Eventually
Curly is an interesting character
Yesssss!!!!
There was nothing wrong with holding the door and letting someone go in front of you at the fountain ect ect in the daydream bc they were praising him and being buddy buddy with him as it was happening he was liked and had "friends"
But when it really happened and he realized nothing had changed afterward, that he wouldn't get the "respect" or what I believe he really was after being friendship and fellowship, his view changed entirely to people just taking advantage of him and being mean to him.
You should also check out the Hey Arnold episode the Headless Cabbie
Curly is basically Palmer Noid
2:56 yeah curley is ...well...lets say hes a few faculty short of a functional school.
24:50 because they need to fill 11 minutes tv logic
Lol 😂
This was a bad example to say this 😂😂 in this episode curly is fully wrong
I know this is outside of what you do on TH-cam, but have you ever thought about reacting to some music from video games and TV shows
Yep!
