For me Bill Evans and this example of collaboration with bass and drums feels like subtle soulful perfection. You get this vibe of 3 guys in unison creating a sonic conversation of instruments weaving and blending a mixture of melody and harmony. Evans really lets his mates express with freedom and support with no pressure or dominance necessary. He orchestrates without commanding and his articulation of directions seem as effortless as his piano playing. This kind of music making is very rare these days. I love Bill Evans’ music. 🎶
Bill Evans is the pianist who, when he plays, makes you philosophize about existence itself. The "dialectic" between the piano and Bill is so profound that when you listen to it, your mind immediately begins to interact with the "world of ideas" where, according to Plato, there are two types of realities: the sensible, which is perceived with the senses, and the intelligible, where ideas exist. Bill's music provokes the mind to enter these realities, generating a hermeneutic between what is heard and what is perceived. Resulting in the need to keep listening in order to understand nature. Regards.
JE PENSE QU'IL EST IMPORTANT DE DIRE QUE : TANT BILL EVANS, COMME O. PETERSON, AVAIENT UN LYRISME MAGNIFIQUE. lE PREMIER UN LYRISME ABSTRAIT, TOUCHANT LES NUAGES. LE SECOND, UN LYRISME ÉMOTIONNEL, QUE NOUS RAMÈNE A NOS DÉSIRS ET UTOPIES... !!! BRAVO ET SAUDADES DE TOUS LES DEUX...!!!
I can't stop watching....so insightful into the process. It always strikes me as to how patient, kind and supportive he was with the other musicians, holding in check what must have been raging perfectionism on his part. He tolerated many horrible pianos also, transforming them into beautiful music machines. For Bill, it was always about the music, rarely any ego involved. Precious and rare....
I love how Bill casually says "we go into Autumn Leaves" and in such a calm demeanor he creates an a nuclear explosion on the keys. He transcends brilliance, thought, perception, depth, creativity with the phrasing from heaven. Thank you so very kindly for sharing this precious archive.

The last ballad is called something like "If you can see me now" by I believe Tadd Dameron.... in any event, the way he plays that with the subtle slight details, ( chromatic passing tones, a 4th voicing when appropriate, even a little bluesy at times, ) is perfect.
In spite of the music being totally seductive and all encompassingly romantic, he is utterly serious and focused, never being carried away by distracting emotions it seems.
That's what sets him apart. There is no separation between him and his piano. They are one unit. Unfortunately as a human he has to leave the piano to take care of himself.
I moved to NYC in 1966 and I started seeing Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez at the "Top of the Gate".It was noisy and nothing like the last time I saw him at "Shelly's Manhole" in Hollywood ,from 1963 to 64. When Bill came into the the room back then the entire room got quiet for a few minutes. There was a kind of respect,a quiet that accompanied him even before he got to the piano along with Chuck Israels and Larry Bunker. Anyway , at the "Gate" the noise was annoying to people like me who wanted to listen. It continued like this for years , too, every time I saw him there. It never occurred to me that he was doing anything else ,for instance this video(incidentally ,thanks for sharing ). On the gig Eddie was a friendly fellow ,always accessible walking between tables saying hello while Bill remained aloof , at least to me , and the mystique of his earlier music with Scott LaFaro continued for me. I think I was resistant to Eddie's wonderful technique as I was a fan of the "Live at the Vanguard" recordings and yearned for the interplay of that trio. I really didn't like Israels but Gomez was really a great addition . The videos that survive are refreshing and I am glad I get a another chance to see , hear , and appreciate them once again.Thank you.
The comparison imo between Scotty and Eddie is unreasonable. Bill was becoming bill with that trio snd all three viewed each other as both equal and complimentary. When Eddie joined- Bill was already a giant among musicians. The original magic in a bottle could never have been replicated. It is fortunate that his subsequent trios all were as wonderful as they were.
@@PatriotSteve I didn't see Chet. Among my first records was Chet Baker and strings. I really liked those tunes, duplicating it many times over the years.
Masterpiece documentary. However it's also fascinating the story of being put to play drums with the two superstars without preparing first. It adds even more thrill. Alex Riel performance is fresh and direct. Thank you Ake!
I have a strong feeling that none of these Danish guys were really up to the occasion. Evans was very patient but seemed to be under considerable strain. On the other hand, it can't have been easy to fall right in step with a genius, All of them, and I mean all of them, should have immersed themselves in the music via recordings for at least a couple of weeks prior to the event. But... it really turned out quite well, and they all seemed to be satisfied. Bravo.
and I cannot stop listening; exactly, one never tires of hearing this man's music. I am no aficionado, of anything really, but I have been a seeker of sorts for the sort of perfection that is not born of the will but which just happens, so to speak. I did not really start listening to Bill Evans until late, or maybe I am still in the middle somewhere, in the quest. Well, but who am I to say so, but Bill Evans could really make music
amazing document. we can see bill rehearsals and his way to approach jazz. And look how alex riel is nervous and happy to join a giant like bill! but i think he made a very good work in this session. we can also understand how the groovy approach of eddie gomez influence the music of the trio, in my opinion is the best bass player for bill
Those 7 who gave this a thums down, need a public flogging. Tone deaf or Stone Deaf, what is it?. Rare footage. Consider myself blessed. Thanks a million, Ake Erickson, for sharing.
I've seen this video before years ago and I am reminded of how thoroughly Bill thought out his arrangements, chord voicings, rhythm and phrasing. They're almost like classical pieces except for solos and the feel of jazz. I'm also reminded how close Bill and Eddie were musically even at this early stage of their association and thought when Bill was running down the tunes for the first time - "These two don't really need a drummer!!..." And I wonder too, why Alex Riel didn't prepare himself for this unique opportunity by listening to Bill's recordings?!! After all, Bill has recorded all of these tunes years before 1966 and all his albums must have been available in Denmark....... I thought he did ok under the circumstances, but was still basically an amateur, called to play with real pros, who were, luckily for him, patient and gentle enough to carry him through these performances.
Many thanks for this very special moment. Bill Evans becomes greater, if possible, by being so nice with this young drummer "doesnt matter if you miss something, just be relaxed"!
For those interested: originally recorded and transmitted by Danish Broadcasting Cooperation (Danish state television, DR) in November 1966. It's Eddie Gomez on bass and Danish Alex Riel on drums. Looks like just a few OH mics and magic. No elaborate set up. Just sounds awesome. Good sound guy. And not to mention great camera work. And would have not been the same in color. The B+W is classic. Too few appreciate that now. Drummer did well fitting in. Intimidating situation. Absolutely fantastic. Liked seeing the camera guys around etc. Full context. Shows also what concentration the players needed to have. When are Bill and Eddie not great?

i know I am kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good site to stream new series online ?
@Ryan Jayden flixportal =)
@Byron Aarav thanks, signed up and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it !!
It’s like life beginning and end ….I felt in love with his music I have never heard anything like this before
The minute he touches a piano I'm gone.... lost in the magic he creates. This guy is the 20th century answer to Chopin or something. Just pure magic!
La previa es ORO. Y Eddie Gomez prendidisimo fuego 🔥
This is the first time I've ever seen Bill Evans working on what he will play instead of just performing. What a wonderful video! Thank you!
same here!
Me too. It's an amazing peek into what happens before he starts playing for an audience. The Autumn Leaves sounds great even in a practice session.
When you hear music that give you chills...every time. Amazing.
Bill Evans was an utter genius!! Beyond perfection!!.
Unbelievably brilliant !!!!!!!!

He was doing heroin at this time, that reflects his mood too

I never cease to be amazed by this time capsule. I keep coming back to it. Bill Evans is very much alive when you watch this. Haunting stuff.
This was recorded 51 years ago. I mean, damn! We are so lucky to be able to get this. What an amazing footage. Thank you very much to the poster!
Incredible that 4 years ago I had the lucky chance to play a couple of pieces with Eddie Gomez (how young here!) namely one was Autumn Leaves!!!

Bill Evans. Genius.
Such an incredible, talented pianist. One never tires of Bill Evans playing!!
He is the absolute genius of all time
So precious to have this preserved🎉 exquisite
Autumn leaves so far is the best track on this wonderful video😮😊
Back in the day when middle-aged men with glasses and suits were still cool. :) Thanks for the upload of this gem.
No, they weren't considered cool because of robot dress, but in spite of it in Bill Evans's case.
Bill & Eddie they are wonderful!

Bill in the piano (the perfect marriage)
Hippest player bar none ... he get's inside me and feels so at home.... can't explain it well but this guy is in my tribe for sure.
