  • I purchased the 1Up Bike Rack 6 months ago and did a video on it comparing it to my Kuat. Now that I have had it for 6 months I wanted to go over some things that I didn't go over on my first video, mainly all of the security locks (Wheel Lock, Add-on Lock and Hitch Bar Lock)
    If you are in the market for a new bike rack I highly recommend this rack, When I first got the rack there were some things that I liked more on the Kuat especially the arms. At first I wasnt used to the ratchet on the arms but now that I'm used to it, its actually really easy to put the bikes on and off. I really like the bike rack and highly recommend it. I definitely like it more than the Kuat now that I'm used to it.
    Here are links to all the locks;

    I've been really torn on the 1-Up vs Kuat NV 2, and this video sold me. Security was the main issue that I was worried about, but seeing the wheel locks in action put me at a bit of ease. Thanks man.

      Yeah the funny thing is I bought the Kuat mainly for the security lock but was pretty disappointed when I used it in real life. The 1Up locks are definitely more secure

    Great review! Thanks for posting. I'm in the market for a bike rack and this is at the top of my list. I think I'd add the EZ Pull accessory to make the tilting a little easier. I'm planning to get the 2" double super duty with two add-ons. Also, thanks for showing the different types of locks you have (Hitch Lock, Add on Lock and Wheel Lock). I'm definitely going to invest in those and I'm hoping to have them all keyed the same. Thanks again!

    Great review, thank you. Also saw your last video and ended up buying the Quik rack based on your comments about it folding up for storage via the levers vs. having to remove the nuts in the wheel track. They don't mention that on the web page and this is a big deal if you need to store the rack in the trunk after using. So, nice call out on that.

    Thanks Tommy. Did you ever have the rack loosen on the hitch receiver? How do you unload with one person (it looks like once you have the lever arms both down, the bike could just fall over)? Do the bikes stay firmly in place or do they wiggle a bunch while driving?

    • @TommyHuynh
      @TommyHuynh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hitch can not get loose from receiver because you tighten the screw the ball secures to receiver. You only need 1 person, you use 2 hands, one to hold the bike while the second one lowers the hitch arm.

      @@wpautz Hi. Yes i did but have not opened the box yet. I will be putting it together this week and provide some pictures if i am able to upload in this comment section. • @Lasani1121
      @Lasani1121 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wpautz Also the reason why i went for the 1 up is because of the security features. I was at a Lowes and walking out when i saw a gentleman standing next to his 2 bike kuat mounted on his svu. I stopped to ask him how he liked the bike rack but timing was unfortunate. He said he went into Lowes for not more than 5 mins and someone cut the cable lock that comes with the kuat and took off with his expensive bike. Now in comparison, the 1 up has a steel pin, similar to what you use to lock through the hitch holes. This pin goes through the cranked arms and wheel and adds much better security. Indeed someone can argue that a thief can get into anything he/she wants to get to but at the least the 1 up will be more of a deterrent vs the cable lock. Hope that helps.

      I was worried about this, too. So, I bought some additional Velcro straps similar to Tommy's and, in possible overkill-mode, wrap one around the support bars right where they touch the tires. That way, if tire(s) deflate, the strapping acts as a failsafe to prevent unexpected release, especially with fendered bikes where you might not be able to get things as "tight" as you might with fenderless.

      1UP has a special plastic accessory called "Wheel Saver" that mounts over skinny tires and disperses gripping forces for nice solid interaction with the rotating lock-down arms. Would totally allow the racks to work with your road bikes:-)

    Tommy, Great job explaining all the features and usage info. I see why it's a bitch to tilt the 3 bike configuration downward because your arm is not long enough to reach the lever and hold the weight of the rack + bikes simultaneously. I wonder if you carried a 2x4 if you could use it as a lever (insert between 3rd and 2nd rack?) for moving the rack with the 3rd bike in place?
