Nine months of rain followed by three months of heat and forest fires. Crime and homeless people everywhere. Unaffordable housing. Lovely place.

You forgot to mention there is thousands of homeless and almost impossible to walk at the parks with the family, and zero police presence.
The zero police presence is very bad. Salem PD has shrunk in size, downsizing, layoffs, cops transferring out of town or whatever other reason. I do believe increased vandalism, speeding drivers, etc….are a direct result. Like has been said, Salem has it’s good and bad but if you’re coming here to escape problems that weren’t solved in your community eventually those problems will start to catch up with you here once the honeymoon ends, no matter where you move to. Moved here from Albuquerque, NM six years ago, from the desert I miss the sunshine but I have my Happy Lights and Tetra light bar ready for use and going to REI asap to buy some waterproof shoes.
Salem a good place to live? Coming from crime-ridden Memphis. Affordable here but I don't want to constantly arm myself everytime I go out.
Yes I think it is a good place to live. Like anywhere there are some good and bad things about it but overall I think it is a great area.

Surprise you didn’t mention “property tax.” ? Marion county property tax is the highest in the state. some area in Salem property tax can be 19%. It’s outrageous ! Another thing about Salem you didn’t mention is “homeless people.” They scatter everywhere especially along HWY I-5, and off the ramp underneath the bridge by Market St. don’t move to Salem: running down and boring town!
Property taxes in Salem are 19mils or 1.9%! Also, properties are not taxed on their market value, but the assessed value which is usually around half of the homes actual value.
Unfortunately homeless people are in all of the larger cities in the area...
Please don't soft-shoe the INCOME TAX rates. $30,000 / year commands the HIGHEST income tax bracket. Unless you're in the POVERTY range of $1,400 - $3,500 / year, you will pay OVER 9% in state income tax! Geez, it's discouraging when realtors peddle false narratives.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's essential to have open discussions about income tax rates and their impact on different income brackets. I did not have time to dive into the subject to deeply in this video but wanted to bring it up so viewers can do their own research or maybe reach out to a CPA to see how it impacts their taxes.
