I think Troy & Abed are great, but I always enjoyed whenever Jeff & Abed did stuff together. Show started with the two of them, real emotional punch was when they parted in the end. Always kinda felt these two were the heart of the show.
I always felt like at the airport scene Annie and Jeff shoul've said something like "See you soon" and Jeff should've told Abed "I see your value now" even though it was already said in the re-pilot
Jeff is as much the protagonist as anyone can be in an ensemble show, and Abed always was the heart of the show due to being the vehicle for all of the meta stuff, so you're absolutely right.
Nah fr! I think the real child in Jeff came out when he was around Abed. Notice how he almost always participated in whatever goofiness Abed (and Troy) were doing while alone
“You and I hung out more last year.” Broke my heart hearing Abed say this to Jeff in season 2. To me, nothing this show did past the first year was ever as earnest, innocent, or fun as what they did those first 2 semesters.
Drinks Quality Oh, my bad, I meant - what about those episodes? They were in season 2, but I’d argue they’re some of the most earnest episodes of the show.
In the later seasons they make a big deal about Abed being selfish and always getting group mixed up in shenanigans but this illustrates that he makes personal sacrifices for his friends just as much as any of them. He's a practicing muslim, he never drinks, but he will drink if it's for Jeff and Britta.
