It was a Rhagium mordax, aka the black-spotted longhorn beetle. It is a species of long-horned beetle. This beetle is found throughout Europe and to Kazakhstan and Russia.

Giant bug net and fairy lights is a winning combination for sure! One of the many things I love about your videos is that from week to week, we never know whether we're going to be seeing you in an extreme blown off a mountain camp, or semi-luxurious relaxing woodland heaven. That huge bug net was an epiphany for me! Here in Maine we have fierce mosquitoes and black flies (midges to you)--and sleeping under the stars is a bit of a dream! But that net makes it feasible. It is so tall, that I'm sure you could cook inside it--even on a little wood burner! We normally need a tent with bug screens and a built in ground sheet. Tarp camping is a fantasy. Bugs don't let up until the evenings get near freezing. People do have screened gazebo tents with metal rames in their gardens. Bit heavy for camping.

I am unwell today. I have the flu. I saw your video and it was great, brightened my day. It took me back many years when ,y parents and I went o visit my Aunt. She worked at a large mail order, most of their stuff was junk but occasionally they would get something in. She got an electronic bug killer, this was new in the 30's. We were sitting around a table outside and the huge bug flew by. It was larger than a hummingbird. It zapped it. They shut it off and we went inside, The next morning I plugged it in and that jolt woke him up and he flew away.
Now that big net would suit me claire although I will admit I hate slugs ,the thought of them buggers slithering over me makes me want bough lol.really do enjoy your videos claire you have a soothing tone to your voices, so relaxing 😁

By the way, it looked like a variety of a Sawyer Beetle. I read that Sawyer Beetles are harmless to the environment; they rarely, if ever, attack a vigorously growing green tree. They are beneficial in fact, as they help to break down the fibers of decaying trees, which helps add nutrients back into the soil. Cool little critter! It's fun to have "guests" for breakfast. I loved your bug net home, especially with the festive lights. I was surprised how it made a 1* C difference in temperature (2* F)! Thanks for another cheerful viddy, Claire! Waves!!! :)

I sleep under a bug net like that when I'm in Asia (where I normally live). It give me a strange satisfaction watching bugs on the outside of the net. I also very often work under the net since it's 'there'.
I've done the one earplug thing before, not a fan though. I find I sleep better with nothing in even though I'm a really light sleeper. I do like mornings though, and enjoy waking up to the dawn chorus. Another fantastic idea for a camp in the woods. ❤️

The 1st video I watched of yours was a hillside camp, when you accidently sat on a bag of crisps, and jumped out of your skin, I laughed so much and subscribed, Loved the starscape and your breakfast buddy, looking forward to your next outing x
My wife can not tollerate too much heat (funny since we live in the deep South USA) so we bought a bug net similar to that because of all the hurricanes we have been having lately. She will put the bug net up in our van and sleep in it with all the doors open to try to keep cool. Also where we live it is not a good idea to sleep under the open sky because even on very dry days you will wake up and everything will be so wet from dew that you would swear it rained that night. Hey, can't get enough or your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Lovely video. In you set up a tarp and put the bug net inside of that you would be set. I lived in England a long time ago and know a little shower can pop up anytime. Lol. Great looking breakfast, bacon the breakfast of champions. Take care and stay safe wild one.

I’m thinking of getting one of those bug nets and velcroing a bottom to it. There’s lots of great overnights to be had in North Florida and it will keep away the army of mosquitoes. Love your videos. Cheers and have a great weekend. 🧸💕

The beetle is a "Black-spotted longhorn beetle" Rhagium mordax

Wow Claire. Brings back memories of the far east in the U.S.Air Force. Mosquitoes were so strong, one bit me through my jungle boot. Stay Beautiful and bug free.
I sleep under a bug net like that when I'm in Asia (where I normally live). It give me a strange satisfaction watching bugs on the outside of the net. I also very often work under the net since it's 'there'.

I've done the one earplug thing before, not a fan though. I find I sleep better with nothing in even though I'm a really light sleeper. I do like mornings though, and enjoy waking up to the dawn chorus. Another fantastic idea for a camp in the woods. ❤️

Fantastic anti bug (squiter) shelter. Awesome way to camp under the night sky with clear weather. That lil fellow that scared you was a black -spotted longhorn beetle. That wouldn't of bothered me but oh do I hate spiders. Lol. Keep up the awesome videos. I want some of that food you had. Made me a bit hungry watching you eat.

My wife can not tollerate too much heat (funny since we live in the deep South USA) so we bought a bug net similar to that because of all the hurricanes we have been having lately. She will put the bug net up in our van and sleep in it with all the doors open to try to keep cool. Also where we live it is not a good idea to sleep under the open sky because even on very dry days you will wake up and everything will be so wet from dew that you would swear it rained that night. Hey, can't get enough or your videos. Thank you for sharing.
Lovely video. In you set up a tarp and put the bug net inside of that you would be set. I lived in England a long time ago and know a little shower can pop up anytime. Lol. Great looking breakfast, bacon the breakfast of champions. Take care and stay safe wild one.
