The Nazi dream sequence is inspired by the original The Wolf Man from 1941. Curt Siodmak, a Jewish screenwriter, had the would-be victims of the Wolf Man be marked with a five-pointed star, much like Jewish victims of the Holocaust were forced to wear the Star of David. Much like writer-director John Landis, his character David Kessler very likely grew up with stories of the Holocaust from survivors in his family (as did a lot of Jewish kids of that generation), hence why the monsters come in the form of Nazis. The movie doesn't dwell on it, but it is deeply informed by the Jewish experience.

Recognition but for the love he killed himself to spare her the alternatives. It's not a theory. It's pretty likely. Don't forget that just before the theater scene he had resolved to end himself to save himself, her, and others. And just like beauty and the beast or king kong, it's the love of a woeman that kills the beast.

Another good theory when in werewolf form after the first complete transformation he's still semi in control since it's the "werepup" stage it's why he's still shaking and whimpering but the "Demon hound from hell" fully takes over once David gets outside and became the adult werewolf final form
That's why he was smaller it was the "birth" stage
John Landis basically confirmed that in the DVD commentary

If I got myself in some trouble in my late-teens or early twenties, there is no way my parents would have flown half across the planet if I was in a hospital recovering, "Oh, he's gonna be OK? -Director John Landis was mostly known for comedies. This was his first foray into horror. From the strength of this movie Michael Jackson hired him to direct the video for "Thriller." He also directed a segment for the "Twilight Zone" movie that notoriously suffered a tragedy on set but was mostly known for collaborations with SNL alums ("Trading Places" "Three Amigos" "Coming to America")
-Landis has a background in stunts. "The Blues Brothers" was known for the record number of cars and collateral damage they destroyed during their iconic chase scenes. In this movie one of the ways they worked around the limitations of the creature FX capabilities was making the massacre at the end more about car stunts than the creature mauling people.
-Oscar winning creature/makeup FX designer Rick Baker became known as a specialist for werewolves and apes, designing creatures for "The Howling" "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan" Michael Jackson's "Thriller," the "Werewolf" TV series from the late 80's, and "Gorillas in The Mist." He would collaborate with Landis again on "Coming to America" and Eddie Murphy again on "The Nutty Professor" franchise transforming Eddie Murphy into various characters. He continued to work until just about a decade ago. One of his last designs was "Maleficent"

Top class film and the best one going to this date, proper belter film. I will never forget this movie ever

One of my favorite 80s horror movies. I remember I had to sneak into the theater in '81 to see this because I was only 16 and was not with a parent. Back in those days, it was easy. The ticket person was usually a teenager. He didn't care how old I was; as long as I had the money, I got in, lol. Everyone knows that David Naughton did the commercial for Dr. Pepper. But do they know he was also a singer? He came out with a hit record in'79 called "Makin It"; the song was from a tv show called "Makin It" in which he had a role. I still have the record on 45.

My favorite thing about this movie is the writers and director never lost sight of the fact it's a monster movie. They didn't make the werewolf sexy or redeemable and David's fate was tragic. It was, and remains, a perfect example of how to handle a protagonist who's a monster.

David Naughton, the man you said looked familiar did Dr. Pepper soda commercials and went on to star in an American sitcom called "Makin' It." He can sing and dance too, and had a top 40 hit, from that series titled "makin' It."

Awesome reaction I loved it!. I was stationed in England when this movie came out and I saw it at the base theater. I loved this movie because so much of it rang true with me. I'v been in several tube stations in London late at night. And I also remember hitchhiking on lonely country roads at night. But one thing I did not relate to was the way the people were so mean to them at The Slaughtered Lamb. When I went to the pubs in the small towns near the base the local people were very nice and they made me and my friends feel very welcome. I loved the English people and I've always missed living in England.

I moved to Austin, TX in 1981 the first movie I watched was 'An American Werewolf In London'! Where I worked at was not too far from where some of scenes to Texas Chainsaw Massacre were shot! I can only imagine how long it took for Davids transformation to take place in real-time! At the time I was more focused on Jenny Agutter didn't fully appreciate this movie till years later! I'd seen her in Logan's Run about 5 years earlier!

My favorite part in this movie has always been when David's at the movie theater with the ghosts of Jack and the people he's killed and they're telling him to kill himself and end the curse, and he asks if he doesn't need a silver bullet or someting like that and Jack deadpans, "Don't be ridiculous" as if his question was any less absurd than literally being a werewolf talking to ghosts.
As for the "the werewolf learns how to control it" trope, that's a modern idea much like "the vampire falls in love with a human and is actually a poor misunderstood tragic figure." Back when this movie came out werewolves and vampires in movies were 99% of the time unambiguously monsters instead of tortrured souls who learned how to control the beast inside them.

Great reaction girls! I was just a kid when this came out. The Halloween after it aired was the most horrifying and the best Halloween I've ever had.
So, of course, i grew up with this, and I've always wondered why Alex was so attracted to him, instead of being weirded out by him. Then, during one of these reactions to it, someone mentioned something that really made a ton of sense. With him now a warewolf he would have amplified hormones... amplified animal magnatisim. So maybe that is why she is so drawn to him. It was something she couldn't actually control.
Also, did you notice that every song on the soundtrack had "moon" in the title. Purposely and perfectly done.

Rick Baker's iconic FX, with John Landis' (dark) sense of humor. Every time a moon song starts playing, I can't help but smile. The nazi werewolf nightmare (opening with the Muppets) is particularly funny with the goofy masks and shrieking. The Muppet inclusion is a nod to Landis' friend, and voice of Miss Piggy - Frank Oz, who plays the bespectacled man from the embassy.

Yeah, it was common back then to take us kids to watch anything the adults watched. My parents were the same way. Then, when cable was popular, we were allowed to watch whatever was on HBO or Showtime. It was before the weird divide that parents can watch crazy stuff but kids can't, which doesn't really make any sense when you think about it. Like, seriously, if you really don't think your kids shouldn't be watching something, then you probably shouldn't be watching it yourself. The double standard is hypocritical.

@@KittyBoom360 What a ridiculous argument. Kids are innocent and highly impressionable. No child should be exposed to sexually explicit or violent films or shows at a young age. Double standard? kids are not sexually mature, adults are. My parents never let me watch stuff like that, but a very questionable babysitter deliberately watched adult movies in front of us, and invited her boyfriend over without our parents knowledge. That messed me up a bit. Did you know that exposing a kid to sexual images or any kind of content is considered abuse? Nope? well i hope you raise your kids better than your own parents did.
