  • Joey Giardello 160 lbs beat Rubin Carter 159 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15
    Date: 1964-12-14
Location: Convention Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
    Referee: Bob Polis 72-66
    Judge: Dave Beloff 70-67
    Judge: Jim Mina 71-66
World Boxing Association Middleweight Title (1st defense by Giardello)
World Boxing Council Middleweight Title (1st defense by Giardello)
    Cunning Pays Off For Champ
    Associated Press | December 15, 1964
It was like the old matador against the young, dangerous bull.
Middleweight champion Joey Giardello came perilously close to being gored but he called on every trick he learned in 16 years of pro battling to beat strong Rubin (Hurricane) Carter in his first title defense last night.
A rousing finish in the last five rounds of the 15-rounder earned the crafty, 34-year-old champion the unanimous decision over the muscular, 27-year-old second-ranking contender from Paterson, N.J., at Convention Hall.
Giardello was cut over the left eye and shaken by a jolting left hook in the fourth round. Carter had his big chance in that round but he blew it. Giardello absorbed several other solid left hooks to the jaw from his ever-threatening foe but Pal Joey always managed to slip away from the brink of disaster. There were no knockdowns.
The ring-scarred champion kept on the move constantly against his stalking, straight-moving opponent. With blood trickling from the cut most of the way, Giardello fought the classic fight - sticking with his left jab to the head, hooking to the body and head and making Carter miss.
Joey had the challenger slicing the air with dozens of punches in most rounds with a slip of the head or a slight move backwards or to the side. Carter landed his share of punches but Giardello scored with more."
Giardello was a veteran of 128 professional fights, while Carter had just 24.
Giardello and Carter were scheduled to fight in Las Vegas on October 23, 1964, but Giardello pulled out when the promoters failed to come up with the $55,000 which had been guaranteed in the contract.
Giardello received 60% of the gross gate and paid Carter $10,000 from his end. Giardello also earned about $5,000 more from television to several cities.
A crowd of 7,652 produced a gross gate of $85,245.
Carter entered the ring a 6-5 favorite after being a 7-5 underdog earlier in the day.
The score listed above for judge Jim Mina is incorrect. His actual score was 69-64 for Giardello.
The Associated Press scored the fight 69-68 for Giardello.
A poll of ringside scribes showed a 15-5 edge for Giardello.
The decision was greeted by mingled cheers and boos. One fan heaved a bottle into the ring as the fighters left. Nobody was hit.
"I won it clear - at least 9-6," Carter said. "I had him on the hook but let him get off. He's cagey and takes a helluva punch."
"He fought my fight and didn't press as I expected him to press," Giardello said. "He didn't fight inside and made it easy for me. That had a lot to do with it."

After Ruben Carter died, the NY
Daily News published my letter to the editor in which I criticized one of their reporters for falling all over himself in praise of Carter.
I also in my letter called out film director Norman Jewison for misrepresenting the fight between Carter and Giardello.
And I noted that I wasn’t convinced Carter was innocent of the murder charge in Patterson.
A few days later the newspaper published a letter by a woman who branded me a racist.
But I also got an email from Mr. Giardello thanking me for my letter, which actually meant something to me.

I don’t think you’re racist, but I think that you need to understand the times Carter was living in and the state of mind he would be in, the state of mind WHITE AMERICA was in and WHO HURRICANE CARTER was and what he stood for. He was feared, outcasted, etc. It is sadly very possible that a powerful black man like Carter, if were to be living in the ‘60’s-would be in Great danger simply because of the ignorant people back then. That is exactly why they took him down.

In the Film they made it look like Rubin Carter was blatantly robbed and should have won. In reality Joey Giardello won by 10 rounds to 5 rounds for Rubin Carter by Unanimous Points decision in my opinion. They also said he was undefeated and knocked out everyone when his record at the time was 24 fights with 20 wins and 12 by Knockout and 4 losses. But the reality didn't fit well with the writer's and Directors of the film The Hurricane so dramatic licence by Hollywood was used..

Not really, John. I believe that Carter may have been outboxed, but not outpunched. Ron Lipton, a man who fought with Carter in sparring watched this fight over and over, and I made highlights of this fight. Carter was the one landing all the bombs, not Giardello. Rubin fought Giardello's fight that night. Giardello couldn't possibly stand toe to toe and trade.

    • @THEDONSTR8Fightah76
      @THEDONSTR8Fightah76  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

They do dramatize the statistics, but regardless. I have studied Carter's career very closely, and I must say that if you do not feel you want to give Carter the credit he deserves, just say he lost fair and square to Dick Tiger and Luis Rodriguez. A few of Carter's losses were in fact robberies by the way. His bout against Harry Scott for instance.

    • @THEDONSTR8Fightah76
      @THEDONSTR8Fightah76  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

You probably know nothing about boxing, and even movies tbh. You say, Jack, that the real fight was different. But this was actually how boxing is supposed to look. In movies, they have to dramatize to keep attention. Rubin Hurricane Carter didn't fight the way he usually did. Rubin would be told he'd have to knock Giardello out. BUT REGARDLESS OF THAT.... Rubin's story will always have a special place in my heart, he is the very reason I keep moving forward in life. HURRICANE THE REAL BOXING VILLAIN.

Carter landed his bomb in the 3rd and 4th rounds with Giardello hanging on. Carter didn't get the job done and allowed Giardello to pile up points between the 10th and 15th rounds. Giardello's strategy was to slow Carter down with body shots. By the 8th round this strategy worked. Carter did not dominate any rounds after about the 8th or 9th round. Giardello clearly won the 13th and 14th rounds by large margins or enough to get him a close decision. Bottom line in boxing - - if you don't beat the Champ convincingly by a knockout or a lopsided decision - - you won't win the Belt - - someone once said - - "You have to beat the man to be the man".

Carter lost but maybe it should have been closer. Carter as part of the settlement with Joey after the movie had to apologize for his part in shamefully making it look as if he won.
No one back then thought he won. Joey was 7 yrs older and beat Dick Tiger 2x. Joey is something like 5 wins and 2 losses against Hall of Fame fighters. He ducked no one. My dad met him a few times. He did a lot for kids.

I don’t doubt that giarello was a good fighter but I saw a loss here. His face was busted and his eye was swole and I saw a lot of missed punches by giarello. I watched this fight because I watched the hurricane movie and saw then on the internet (researching a couple things from the movie) that giarello sued the movie company Universal because he said they portrayed him as a weak fighter and that they hyped up the racism angle. So I wanted to see if giarello was right and racism or whatever be damned, I saw a fighter who was contending for the championship BEAT the actual champion and I think the hurricane had a point here that he was robbed. If ANYTHING you could say maybe a draw but there’s no way giarello outright won this fight. I honestly believe that they were punishing Carter due to the interview with the newspaper where he said some explosive things about the racial state of America at that time. Remember this is the same time as the rise of Ali who also dealt with racial discrimination due to his outspoken views on racism too. The movie may have taken liberties on how one sided they made the fight look (because these guys were fighting each other it wasn’t a beating that was one sided) but they were not way far off of the truth. I also think that’s why nothing came of his lawsuit against the movie company because all you have to do is watch this actual fight. I hate that black athletes with tremendous skill couldn’t just get in the ring or on the field or court and let their talent speak for them they had to overcome racial obstacles just to get a foot on that field or court. Even the announcer in this video is overselling the punches of giarello and underselling Carter’s. I saw a left snap giarellos whole head backwards and he staggers after it and then the announcer says “a light left by carter”. Really? Would YOU be able to take that left if it was “so light”?

No way I wouldn't be able to take a punch from Carter. Every punch was fast, and hard. Every punch by him was a knockout punch. Hurricane Carter was very special. I don't think there was ever another fighter that fought with the aggression that Rubin Hurricane Carter had. I also came up with this theory. That if Rubin Carter did shoot up the bar, it wasn't with John Artis, it was with John Bucks Royster. The dude who stepped out of the car the second time the police pulled them over. Because in 1967 John Bucks Royster came to court DRUNK. So he basically dumbed himself down so that he wouldn't be able to get himself in trouble. And Rubin is like "Well why do I have to do time, when he is free?!"
But again, I know the justice system is extremely flawed.
