Quickest way to fall asleep is turn every light off even a nightlight cause that light is tricking your brain in thinking it’s still dat time put away your phone id actually recommend turning on a you tube video a long one like an hours worth something can be anything and turn brightness down flip phone over so screen not making the room bright and turn sound down a bit and just lay there and listen with your eyes closed in the dark. This gives your brain something to listen too so your not laying there thinking about everything and within probably 15 minutes you’ll be asleep. This works for me every time

I have a theory of my own. As mentioned in the video, we consolidate memories and clean our neurons during sleep. But I also think it's when we rest our tonic, or postural muscles. Our tonic muscles are always firing in alternating sequences while we are awake- it's how we stay standing or seated upright etc without any conscious effort. But those muscles need to rest and rebuild- sleep shuts them down so they can rejuvenate.

Hey there. Just to say, you definitely answered your own question! I work in cognitive neuroscience doing research, so you've definitely got my full attention with this video. We learned in our master's program that indeed we do know exactly what sleep is for, and you said it right at the start of the video! It's just to deal with all the adenosine build up leftover from the ATP used during the day! As adenosine rises we become drowsy, and when evolving over millions of years... being drowsy during hunting time kind of meant death! So as you said about balancing the alertness systems, it's best to make sure you time it right and have the time of alerting hormones during the day. The development of circadian rhythms as studied in ancestral organisms merely overlaps as secondary pressure for our body to sleep (as you set reset every day to sunlight to set oscillations for ~24hrs), so when circadian forces and metabolical forces (i.e. adenosine build-up) are exerted the strongest NET effect, then we best pass out right at that time so that we're ready to hunt in the morning! So to put it shortly, gotta get rid of that adenosine at some point, so may as well do it while there's no prey out for the catching! Or perhaps rather than hunt... be sufficiently awake to sit in our offices and watch funny gifs with clumsy cats.

So if there was an artificial way to remove the adenosine without sleeping we wouldn`t need to sleep anymore? i dont buy it. I think sleep is necessary for brain function, i think it decides what Information to keep and which to remove and other Information maintenance. like defragmenting a computer. removing adenosine seems very little.

    • @hidoctornuck2969
      @hidoctornuck2969 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Wow! You answered my comment haha awesome :D
You're totally right! Honestly tho that video is great, I find it awesome that you could pack so much in to just a few minutes, I don't know how you guys manage to be so comprehensive, well-researched, and clear in such short videos. Thanks really for all of them! And to @RoScFan, you can't remove adenosine, because it turns back in to ATP which you need to live, but you can use a magical little product COFFFEEEEEEEE haha yum yum yum, caffeine is a competitive inhibitor, since it can fit in to adenosine receptors. Unfortunately the adenosine just hangs out in the mean time building up... so once the coffee wears off then you're just as tired as you would have been before :( And regarding consolidating important thoughts and experiences, I might assume that could be a downstream evolutionary spandrel, possibly something that we learned to use sleep for once we previously developed sleep patterns for more primitive needs, in the mean time evolving to have larger brains which I would very well assume would need a break every day! ***Bear in mind I am using no sources here and am not claiming that is fact, just based on things I sort of remember hearing in lecture years ago, I could be wrong so please don't sue me***
Just a thought tho... I wonder how meditation plays a role in all of this... could it offset metabolic and circadian drives to sleep... could it account for the information maintenance? Hmm could it even propagate the metabolic functions that produce ATP??? I wonder :P Maybe a next video for that: "What does meditation do?"

    • @Katie-hj5eb

Maybe someday we will have our adenosine extracted and only sleep for recreation. We already know how to command falling back asleep with melatonin
We could command our bodies sleep cycles, if we understood the receptors that they work by completely
Melatonin is also generally cheap, so even if we see light all the time you can still get to sleep normally
If whatever flushes adenosine was equally cheap it would change a lot of things in societies around the globe

Usually, I get so tired around 5 or 7 evenings that I go to sleep and wake up later. For evening events, like doing a gig or going out somewhere, I try to plan a good rest in the afternoon. This is the second time I hear that's it's kind of a natural pattern; before, I used to think not being able to stick to 16 hours of activity in one block and 8 hours sleep afterwards is something freaky, but I'm glad to learn it's actually a sign of good health.

That is why you are tired. Actually it depends on the person. Some people might need 6 or 8, but 10 is overkill. Just experiment.

What if sleep is just the unanimus but independently evolved decision that it's easier to avoid dying when you have more information and energy AKA sunlight? And everything talked about in this video are just bonuses we've evolved to utilize during sleep to make better use of the time? What if it started as just hiding/not moving when you couldn't see because there just wasn't any information for you to process?
Of course nature is always in flux, so there are organisms that adapted to thrive in the night while everyone snoozed. And that makes sense.
Think about it, running around in the dark just gets you killed really easy. It would make sense just to pause for a while until it became practical to survive.

Doesn’t matter if it’s dark outside, it’s better to be awake in darkness than to just sleep, open to any predator. If the body could be awake 24 hours a day that would be better so it has to have something to do with the fact that the body needs to force “you” to shut down to be able to repair cells or whatever. That’s my way of seeing it anyways

I've felt naturally nocturnal my whole life. I literally have more energy through the night, and the sun being up relaxes me to sleep. So could that mean I'm deficient in a certain chemical in my brain? Could it be hereditary? I've forced myself to be on a "normal sleep schedule" for a lot of my life, but if I was given free will to sleep and rise when I choose, I would prefer to be awake at night. Per my sleep pathologist, it’s just the result of a delayed sleep-wake cycle. You can alter it a few hours, but you’ll never have a “normal” circadian rhythm. It’s entirely normal to have as well. Some people have very early sleep-wake, some are very delayed, and everything in between. Not everyone needs 8hrs a night, either. I was actually told by my doctor that I should be getting 6-7hrs AT MOST because I just have a lower sleep need.

Or sometimes I may dream of something to where it peaks my curiosity about something and I wake up to research it, and sometimes I really think we have the ability to rationalize thoughts, or discover some new information we never knew, or possibly forgotten we’ve already learned, or perhaps the type of day we are going to have, like when you think of a song and it plays suddenly on the radio…. It’s an interesting phenomenon that none of us really understand with endless ways to quantify and rationalize it, which ultimately brings me to the point of frustration in that there is essentially no right or wrong school of thought when cursed with an inquisitive mind. It’s very much like trying to accurately predict the weather, math and science allow us the ability to predict with absolute precision the movement of the stars, planets, asteroids and so on from as little to one minute, to as far as infinity, unlike weather we can’t because of all the thousands of small variables that exist on earth and the effects of events that occur beyond the planet. My goodness, please excuse me, I’m over here rambling, losing my train of thought when I should be sleeping lol

I am currently doing an online school program that allows me to do school on my own schedule, at my own pace. I have found that I am much more productive because I can sleep better, and longer. I now have a part time job, and have the best grades I’ve had in 4 years. 10/10 would recommend.

5:17 am i the only one who can actually think of nothing? Not only on command but when someone asks me a question of which i do not know the answer to, or I need to come up with a creative idea. Just nothing. Not just repeating think of something/nothing, just nothing.

The term “bird brain” comes from how small bird brains were, people thinking that you were dumber if you didn’t have a normal sized brain.

When it comes to sleep, I am a minimalist. I stay up late, and I wake up early. I try to get as little sleep as possible to function.

I read a paper years ago that hypothesized that sleep was the time you subconscious took to make sense of all the input you've received during the day.

Jorgen Wu Search Uberman sleeping cycle. There are other alternative sleep cycles, but the Uberman cycle is the best one for me and have no problems with sex, its just sometimes your girlfriend/wife wants to cuddle and after your 30 min sleep you just stare at the siling untill you can break lose
