Appreciate the honesty here. In regards to the shortcomings mentioned (1080i, 50 Hz) I wouldn't be surprised if a firmware update comes out in the near future to remedy those. The reason the RT5X isn't working with your PS2 at 1080i is because the PS2 switches its RGB output from RGBS to RGsB (sync-on-green) at 480p and higher, and the RT5X does not support sync-on-green over SCART. As far as the RT5X is concerned, the sync signal just disappeared. That's why Mike suggested using component cables, because the PS2 outputs the same type of sync signal over component for all resolutions. Another solution is using a device that separates sync-on-green, such as the recent gscart switches.

Hi - great review. Just to flag, the PS2’s higher resolutions didn’t work over SCART as the 5X can’t support RGsB over SCART. (It only does RGBs.) The only way you’ll get the higher resolutions is to use 1) a Component cable or 2) the SCART cable via a GSCART which will convert the RGsB to RGBs.
Just a general comment, that I'm posting on this video because it's the newest one: As a software engineer with an interest in all things retro-game-related, the things you do on this channel are really inspiring to me. I really look up to you. Thanks for all of the great videos, and keep being awesome.
One selling point you didn't mention or test was the RetroTINK's support for S-video which is natively supported by the PS1, N64, and Gamecube and not supported by the OSSC.
Honestly, the Neo Geo footage OSSC vs 5X was night and day in this video, but I understand it doesn't always appear that way on your display while you're playing.
Something like this can absolutely be down to one "capturing better". And on some displays there may be very little difference. But i think the X5 is going to be my next purchase.. Its instant rez adaption is insane.
@@wishusknight3009 For original RE2 players that could be a game changer. I've seen a few videos where the creators ultimately went with emulation to record gameplay because RE2 constantly switched resolutions and messed with their capture cards.
@@grn1 It is honestly going to be a help for vintage PC work too. Seeing post screens that flash by in less than a second while my screen is blanking out playing with wingnuts isn't good.
He is using Generic 4:3 profile on OSSC while using 1080p Over profile on 5x (and probably a Neo Geo profile). Obviously 5x is gonna look sharper, but the same sharpness can be obtained from the OSSC if he used a perfected timing profile.
Instant resolution switch is a game changer. Motion adaptive deinterlacer is nice too: you should be able to just use it and forget, half-framerate high-res games shouldn't suffer from it as they do from bob, and full-framerate hi-res games would get clearer ui elements.
So for those who wonder if resolution switching causes problems in pal consoles: i just tried it with sonic the hedgehog two and streets of rage on the pal sega mega drive and it works perfectly fine, the switching is so fast, you cant even see it properly.. no problems at all, love it so far
The single greatest thing about the RT5X is that MikeChi is communicative and committed to making the 5X be awesome for everybody. I'm 100% certain there'll be firmware fixes for the PAL issues. While some sections of the retro gaming community are content to navel-gaze over cables and arcane settings, Mike has a "Just Play The Damn Game" approach, and RT5X definitely lives up to that mantra. I expect we'll see great things in the near future. Another big feature that you didn't mention is that the RT5X is supposed to output standards-compliant resolutions and timings on the HDMI port, so the compatibility with TVs and most capture cards should be much higher than OSSC.
Any idea how much input lag the 5X pro adds on it's own? I'm interested in buying this to add CRT softness settings to my AVS, SNES & GEN(using retro vision component cables) & Duo.
I thank my lucky stars every day that I can't tell the differences when I'm shown a side by side example like seen in this excellent video. These eyes are saving me a ton of $ not noticing any difference.

My guy you are the goat when it comes to this. Your work is a blueprint for us to resurrect our consoles and save our childhood devices to stand the test of time.
One thing that I notice is a yellowish tint, you can see better in GT4 white menu and when MVG zooms in Art of Fighting menu, the SNK logo has a bit of yellow to it.
@@TheAfroman The RetroTINK-5X is capable of both RGB Full & Limited, while OSSC is only Full. My guess is MVG forgot to set the RetroTINK-5X to Full when showing the noise comparison at 6:32.
I dont think that it doesnt work with pal consoles, maybe this is just for the amiga..i will test it tomorrow with my palconsoles after my retrotink arrived
The previous RetroTink products had excellent 50Hz support, and I bet this does/will too. One thing to keep in mind is that the Amiga supports really weird resolutions that Mike Chi probably wasn't expect 99% of people to be using it with. Maybe keep an eye on what the firmware looks like? You also should see if anyone else running PAL content is running into these issues, or if it's mostly just the Amiga.
@@chimnino well in Europe SCART was the big thing (expecially with TVs... every TV had SCART imputs until 4k TVs). Component cables were basically never considered here, since (if one disliked the inferior composite cables provided with many game consoles) RGB through SCART was the best solution possible. I think you know that SCART (I mean RGB) and composite cables (or better said YPbPr) basically output the same quality, with the SCART being slighty better if ay all. Therefore your suggestion is wrong (and would only apply for US citizens). You know, not everyone lives in the US
A quick note about the slight difference in noise you demonstrated in the Neo Geo capture: it looks like your OSSC is in generic mode as the output looks significantly softer than the 5X in that example, which I believe is masking a lot of the noise. I would wager that if you set up optimal phase for the Neo Geo, the noise levels would look almost identical to what you see coming through the 5X
Yeah for the pound sterling equivalent of what the Retrotink 5X Pro cost I was able to buy an Xbox One X. With Developer Mode enabled it will actually emulate a lot of the things here and also can back compat in regular mode for X360/original Xbox. Still a neat device if you are a retrothusiast gamer with deep pockets though, for sure.
@@dummymannequin7272 honestly don't get upscaling in most scenario's. I play on the original console so I don't have lag and everything works like it should've when it was released. Old consoles like nes up to gc I play on a CRT. To get the most real picture the developers had in mind when making the game. Since they where actually made on a CRT. If you want to play in 4k, just use emulation it's honestly probably better than upscaling a fuzzy game 5 times. @@Clay3613 yes but so does the retrotink 5 your point? and if you actually read what i wrote i said OSSC+Frameister they cover what the other lacks and that combo is what i am basing the argument over the Retrotink 5. the OSSC right now is 170 USD before shipping and the RT5 is 275 before shipping for reference. If it was just the OSSC vs RT5 the RT5 wins hands down for versatility and deinterlacing but for us that have BOTH it is a hard ass sell for a sidegrade the next retrotink will most likely sell to us as a major upgrade. and even then i have a feeling the need for linedoubling alone is gonna stay for the ossc. As it is the res switching is a MAJOR deal for us but with the amount of money placed into our setup already it makes it feel the need to have a bit more to justify the buy and with the lack of the HDMI in for the digital adapter we have for a few consoles it cant replace our Frameister yet. Interesting video. I was testing mine a few days ago and it worked with every PAL game that I tried through a SCART RBG-cable from RetroGamingCables (CSYNC Cables, all of them, PS2/WII/Gamecube). BUT, I had this issue running some of my Wii Virtual Console games that were running in 240p (A link to the Past, for example). The ones running in 480i were fine though...
That's good to know that it works with retro gaming cables, I was wondering whether their was a compatibility issue with sync. Do you use a switcher? I'm getting a gscartsw and wondering which cables to get with a combination gscartsw and retrotink 5x
Mine is ordered and awaiting to be shipped. I'm super pumped to get it. Mike absolutely killed it with this product. This review just confirmed my decision to buy one. Awesome video MVG.
I told my friends about this. but I already have several retrotinks AND an ossc. I don't need it myself. that fast resolution switching is amazing, but i had that covered with a DVD0 VPx in my chain... but retrotink 5x is definititely a better solution
USPS says mine is at the post office so it will likely come today. It's replacing my Framemeister which I'm going to sell on eBay (likely for more than I paid for the 5X). I only need it to work with NTSC so this is basically a perfect replacement. As nice as Firebrand X's profiles are, it's annoying to have to load them each time I play a new console on the Framemeister. Plus this isn't going to have the sync issues I get from certain Saturn games and the deinterlacing looks superb. Only downside is the SCART cable is backwards so I had to order a weird one with a right angle connector from Amazon UK.
As usual, great video! Man, I've been on the fence about getting this since I'm pretty happy with my Retrotink 2x pro, but that N64 composite comparison might've sold me on it. After all, my CD-I's composite output deserves the best.
This is a fantastic video! Waiting for mine to come in the mail. I don't bother with Amiga or anything 50hz (all my consoles are NTSC)... So I think the two major problems you touched on there aren't going to affect me too much. You really put it through its paces though!! I'm stoked to see what this thing can do
have the same question, the majority of my older consoles run at 50hzPAL. was hoping this could replace my component to hdmi converters since component seems to be getting phased out on newer tvs.
Thank you for doing this video so fast! I don't have any system which plays at 50 Hz, so this looks like a great solution for me. Right now I am using a MINI2x, and this seems to be a decent upgrade.
Man, let me tell you something, I really appreciate your work and your videos, I really learn a lot with them. I have slowly started to buy retro consoles and will be in need of something like this, again thank you and keep them videos coming/
In an age where a stupid cosmetic hat for your CoD character costs $20 fucking dollars, this thing is a bargain at $275! R&D costs money. The gaming community is so weird. They'll give away money to magacorps for bullshit DLC, but not a cottage manufacturer servicing a niche market? C'mon now.

@@The2808erik It looks a lot better than 480i still, and it should look decent on most TVs. If you want a sharper image then you can upscale through the OSSC, 5x, or Mclassic (Mclassic’s biggest strength is 480p, I’m not recommending it as an alternative to the others in most situations).

Respect, great review! Always love your work as you cover a wide range of random retro gear (I have a particular interest in Amigas, so it's always great to see them).
Well, I think the thing is that lots of videophile retro gamers in the US have "taken" SCART as a common and de facto standard way of using RGB signals from consoles, since the US never had a consumer RGB standard of its own, so when you spend all your time thinking about SCART as a way of using RGB video, I can see how its easy to forget about foreign video standards (or how its not just an RGB standard).
Motion Adaptive de-interlacing really is magical. The Retrotink5x-Pro box just looks plain sick. Too bad the it doesn’t seem to have the optimized PSP mode that the OSSC has: that feature is a game-changer for me. Great vid MVG!
@@ians_parks Somebody can correct me if I'm misremembering, but it de-letterboxes PSP game content (you can see how the PSP letterboxes game content if you plug its component/AV cables directly into your TV), line doubles it to 960p, and then fits that to your entire display area (so fullscreen PSP games, baby!)! Been a pretty sick feature paired up w my PSPGo that can use DS3 controllers via bluetooth :)
@@vladimirmlotschek3265 The retrotink5x definitely doesnt fill the screen for psp games, its still letterboxed for games but fullscreen for the home menu although Mike said something to me on twitter about potentially adding a zoom feature via a firmware update. I imagine alot of the issues people find with these early units are going to be gradually ironed out by firmware updates being that its FPGA based now.
Clearly the answer is yes, as people are happily buying it at that price. That's how valuation works, the price people are willing to pay for a given product, crossed against the price people are willing to sell it for. It could be a pet rock for $275 and it legitimately be worth that.
Even then the 5X has a surprising amount of settings as well, so it's suitable both for people who prefer plug-and-play and those who prefer heavy fine-tuning.
OSSC pro would be the more obvious comparison. But in the short term there are features and usability improvements by switching to the 5X clearly. The deinterlacer steals the show IMO - the smoothing options in future hopefully will make it even better.
Sounds great and despite the high cost, seems like a good value compared to modding a bunch of classic systems. I hope you'll get some composite and/or component video cables for your PS2 for a future video to see how that looks. It'd also be great if you could do the same with a composite/component switch to see how that affects things. Thanks for the review =)
The only thing that is missing from Retro Tink 5x is a HDMI input for HDMI devices that way you could use something like a Nintendo switch to boost resolution upto 1440p
Definitely get the component cables for the PS2 and run GT4 in 1080i. There are some videos on TH-cam that show how amazing it looks. You could easily mistake it for the PS3 updates.
Is the 1080i mode even worth using in Gran Turismo 4/Tourist Trophy? I thought it rendered at the same resolution internally for all modes (512x448) and just upscaled it for the output. You're better off using 480p since there's no deinterlacing needed. 1080i support was probably added for projectors that supported 1080i but not 480p.
I don't know if someone did a comprehensive research, it may be a slightly different resolution like 540 vertically. In that case 480p or 1080i could look a bit better depending on your gear I guess but not a huge difference for sure.
So i did a quick test and 1080i is better indeed because it uses the same technique usually used in 480i on ps2: objects that aren't moving much receive analogue 2x vertical antialiasing of sorts since alternating fields is rendered at different positions. You can clearly see how this works this by comparing a screenshot to the live picture.
I'll stick to small CRT as long as I can. Hoping that in few years there will be scaler available that got all pros of 5x, plus it does perfect emulation of CRT on LCD in the same time(scanlines, glow, curvature). All as lagless as possible.

$275 is a bit too dear for me at the moment. I understand why the price is what it is (chip shortages and FPGAs not exactly going down in price is far beyond the control of Mike Chi after all), but I hope that in the future the price can go down as shortages are resolved. I’m trying to standardize around 4K/HDMI 2.1 as well. So I might still wait out a potential RetroTiNK 9x. But again those FPGA prices are brutal. I think Mike Chi has done a great job overall. I do own a 2X pro :)
This is really cool. I just recently went down the rabbit hole of RGB on a PVM. Not quite ready to get into retrotink, but when I am I'm sure Mike will have the kinks ironed out.
Very curious too! I need RGBHV in with VGA Port for my McWill modded Game Gear. OSSC Pro will also have downscaling via HDMI in. And screen rotation for Arcade Shoot em ups, which will be a big one!
To be fair it isn't made for computers. I'm pretty sure Mike Chi doesn't own an Amiga, an X68000 or a ton of PAL equipment. Give it time he will write firmware to fix it...
PSA: The RetroRINK products are not an OSSC. If you don’t expect them to be an OSSC, you will be quite happy with them. Nothing wrong with sticking to what you’re good at, and I would gladly make room for the 5X _and_ an OSSC or two. They’re both such incredibly useful tools that I don’t have any need to pit them against each other.

@@kitsura its not out yet but ill be sure to review one when i can
I got one just for the PS2. The motion adaptive de-interlacing looks amazing from what I've seen. My unit is on it's way and I can't wait! :D
How does it compare to an emulator?

Glad to see Agony as you fav game for testing resolution switching ont the Amiga :)
Just a general comment, that I'm posting on this video because it's the newest one:
As a software engineer with an interest in all things retro-game-related, the things you do on this channel are really inspiring to me. I really look up to you. Thanks for all of the great videos, and keep being awesome.
One selling point you didn't mention or test was the RetroTINK's support for S-video which is natively supported by the PS1, N64, and Gamecube and not supported by the OSSC.
On the other hand, the 5x doesn't do VGA, whereas the OSSC does. ;-)
@@R3TR0R4V3 could you not use a scart to vga adapter?
@@Greyhats Don't really need one.. The OSSC does VGA, which is all I need for the couple consoles I have that use it, Dreamcast & ColecoVision. :)
@@R3TR0R4V3 i know, i’m just saying there is a work around. i enjoy both the rt5 and ossc. 👍🏼👍🏼
Overall you can’t compare an OSSC and Retrotink. They are two very different products.
Set-and-forget, or "Just Play The Damn Game" is pretty much MikeChi's motto! ;)
Love me some MVG on a Monday morning.

@@vanerek yesssssss
The best compliment I can give you, is I have literally zero interest in the source material, but I still loved the video. The beard is 10/10 btw
So for those who wonder if resolution switching causes problems in pal consoles: i just tried it with sonic the hedgehog two and streets of rage on the pal sega mega drive and it works perfectly fine, the switching is so fast, you cant even see it properly.. no problems at all, love it so far
Can always rely on MVG to show us Amiga as well as other systems. Great video, short and to the point.
I love how slow you speak, absolutely a joy to listen to with English not being my first language.
And for English being my first language, I'm still able to speed up the video if I feel like it gets too slow. It's the best of both worlds!

I thank my lucky stars every day that I can't tell the differences when I'm shown a side by side example like seen in this excellent video. These eyes are saving me a ton of $ not noticing any difference.
MVG starts off my weeks great with a new vid as I wake up and have breakfast before work. I look forward to your videos every monday, no matter what you're talking about. Excellent as always!
Thumbs up for showing one of the greatest games of all time, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.
I noticed that too. Might need to tweak some settings like gamma
@@TheAfroman The RetroTINK-5X is capable of both RGB Full & Limited, while OSSC is only Full. My guess is MVG forgot to set the RetroTINK-5X to Full when showing the noise comparison at 6:32.
Just use some Retrobright on it!
As a UK gamer with a PAL collection that's largely locked to 50Hz, that last part is sadly a deal breaker for me :(
I dont think that it doesnt work with pal consoles, maybe this is just for the amiga..i will test it tomorrow with my palconsoles after my retrotink arrived
It's likely to be fixed with a firmware update.
Use component. Drop SCART.
Oh man, that de-interlacing looks amazing.
I am way too poor for those prices.
This is why I moved to emulation as for me it's good enough. All of my hardware is now boxed up in the attic.
@@karehaqt That’s alright
Yeah for the pound sterling equivalent of what the Retrotink 5X Pro cost I was able to buy an Xbox One X. With Developer Mode enabled it will actually emulate a lot of the things here and also can back compat in regular mode for X360/original Xbox.
Still a neat device if you are a retrothusiast gamer with deep pockets though, for sure.
Yeah, nice upscaler, but 275 US dollars?! Wow.
Not for me.
I guess some people just don't really like CRTs with i get, but why just not play emulator than. The only reason would be nostalgia factor and ease of use i guess.

I'm glad we have more options than the Framemeister these days, I remember back when that thing came out I thought it was the coolest piece of tech ever.
Been waiting for the OSSC Pro but the quick resolution switching of the RetroTINK 5X is really tempting as it may finally remedy the dreaded CronoCross menu switching
He is right for those that got the OSSC and Framemeisters this is a hard sell but i would recommend this over those 2 just on Price alone and availability as well at least for Real hardware junkies otherwise the Mister is shaping up very well might wait until the cores are finished or if a "project mister2" on a stronger FPGA comes out.
@@snintendog An OSSC sufficiently costs less than $300...
The way most people have their consoles right now is↓
Console RGB/COMP/Digital HDMI mod IE GCHD Eon/Xbox Chimeric HDMI>OSSC for LineDouble>Framiester for HDMI cleanup(alot of tvs suck at seeing nonstandard res or timings)>TV
OR
Console>Composite/Svid/Scart RGB or COMP Interlaced and progressive>Framemeister for Scaling
The RetroTink 5x can handle the Second one Handily but falls to the purely digital out we have on more of the not quite retro systems.
@@snintendog The OSSC literally costs half as much and is currently in stock, so not sure what you mean when you say the 5x beats it on price and availability... Also the mister isn't even a de-interlacer, it's an emulator.

Nice. Every time I thought of a tech question, you answered it within a few sentences.
The one thing that I do hope will be added via Firmware update is the smoothing filter. Useful for Composite & S-Video signals for 3D games, it's a shame to see it missing here when it's present on all of the much cheaper RetroTINK devices. I am very curious to know why it was omitted on the 5X.
The positives far outweigh the negatives here. I definitely have no interest in the Amiga so that's not a deal breaker and neither is the issue with Gran Turismo 4. This will definitely end up replacing the OSSC for a lot of people.
Probably will be updated, pretty cool. Just think what we can have as FPGA in like a decade!
You know it's good when the Framemeister's resale value collapses like 50-70% in the space of a couple of months (which the OSSC never seemed to do much to bring down)

Yeah, If it goes on sale, or if someone better comes along i'll probably get it. At this point...
It's here and the 1440p is amazing. This is a legit awesome product. Mike should be proud.
As usual, great video! Man, I've been on the fence about getting this since I'm pretty happy with my Retrotink 2x pro, but that N64 composite comparison might've sold me on it. After all, my CD-I's composite output deserves the best.

Respect, great review! Always love your work as you cover a wide range of random retro gear (I have a particular interest in Amigas, so it's always great to see them).
It seems like my kind of upscaler. I hate twiddling as I find myself not playing anything.
I don't really need an upscaler, but I still learned something useful from this video: Dimmu Borgir stole one of their best songs from an Amiga game.
i would expect a device with a SCART connection to have better support for PAL signals.
Ive never owned an ossc myself. What does the optimized mode for the psp do?
@@ians_parks Somebody can correct me if I'm misremembering, but it de-letterboxes PSP game content (you can see how the PSP letterboxes game content if you plug its component/AV cables directly into your TV), line doubles it to 960p, and then fits that to your entire display area (so fullscreen PSP games, baby!)! I'm sure the 50hz issue will get a firmware fix. I really want this box to handle the Chrono Cross problem.
Thank you for making Mondays a little more bearable lol
Finally someone testing scalers with the Amiga. Great review. Now play some Pinball Dreams and se how it handles multiball ;-)
Looks nice, but one of my main use cases would be a 50Hz Amiga, I'll keep a close eye on this for any firmware updates.
Does it have 50hz issues generally or just with the Amiga?
1080i and 50hz issues are already fixed in their 1.84 update. For anyone watching in the future
thank you!
Regarding 1080i, I'm pretty sure that PS2 out it only over component cable and not scart. So, not surprise that it is not working over SCART.
Clearly the answer is yes, as people are happily buying it at that price. That's how valuation works, the price people are willing to pay for a given product, crossed against the price people are willing to sell it for. It could be a pet rock for $275 and it legitimately be worth that.
Ouch - thats not cheap. I've got a OSSC and a RetroTink 2x that seems to work well enough.
does the 2x work with 576i 50hz or 240i 50hz? sorry being from PAL region is a pain in the ass.
The instant switching is absolutely the reason to buy this.
I always tell people the retrotink is more plug-and-play and the OSSC is more customizable.
In that case 480p or 1080i could look a bit better depending on your gear I guess but not a huge difference for sure.
yeah, bob at retrorgb said that there's no reason ever to choose 1080i over 720p. with that is force GT into 720p mode.
I'm really, really fond of using CRT's...but I'm definitely going to get one of these down the line!
I'll stick to small CRT as long as I can. Hoping that in few years there will be scaler available that got all pros of 5x, plus it does perfect emulation of CRT on LCD in the same time(scanlines, glow, curvature). All as lagless as possible.
@@kamilpotato3764 Yes! I tried the Framemeister a few years back, but it was too much hassle and I missed the true CRT-look :p I did not take a loss selling it to the next guy either, so theres that!
Is there possibility test scalers/capture cards with vhs. I've been searching for some reasonable priced combo.
MVG, you should firmware upgrade your Retrotink 5x Pro and make an updated video.
This is really cool. I just recently went down the rabbit hole of RGB on a PVM. Not quite ready to get into retrotink, but when I am I'm sure Mike will have the kinks ironed out.
Waiting for the OSSC Pro.
Very curious too! I need RGBHV in with VGA Port for my McWill modded Game Gear. OSSC Pro will also have downscaling via HDMI in. And screen rotation for Arcade Shoot em ups, which will be a big one!
Also Mister like capabilities for emulation.
The OSSC pro will be over $500, so if you’re looking for a good scaler I would recommend this product.
My guilty pleasure is watching random stuff like this.
To be fair it isn't made for computers. I'm pretty sure Mike Chi doesn't own an Amiga, an X68000 or a ton of PAL equipment.
Give it time he will write firmware to fix it...
If it works with an Amiga, X68000 and FM Towns then I will be impressed.
