Those cables aren’t necessary with the 2X Pro and 5x.
They use to be, because there was an issue with 480p into the converter, but that was figured out.

I used to have the 2x multiformat as i planned to one day try out scart, but then the 5x came out and i went with one of those. Absolutely love it. Its impressive on all systems, but my gamecube blows my mind. I genuinely cant believe what im seeing when i play gamecube using the 5x. The games almost look like they could have been released this year. I use s video, but with the 5x i still have the option to explore scart which is nice. I also couple it with an mclassic, which i sometimes turn off as it can cause sharpening artifacts, but it does help quite a bit. With the 2x, the mclassic was a must especially with n64.

Would have been nice to see image quality comparisons between all of them, particularly the 2x vs 5x.

    • @RoXolid
      @RoXolid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That would have made an already long video even longer, and I don't have the Mini to compare. Also, when you upload to TH-cam you get compression and other things that it could make differences negligible vs in-person.

i bought a crt for my n64, but man has my 32 year old eyes got use to looking at 1080 and 1440p computer monitors so the lines bother the hell out of me.

The 5x works fine with going into capture cards but I've had issues going straight from the 2x to capture cards. For the 2x's I go from the 2x to an OSSC and that's works amazingly.

Nice video man! I'm so fed up with trying the $30 price point PS2 to HDMI converters. I've tried Levelhike, Hyperkin, and the Amazon's choice one, and I've had either sound buzzing issues, or intermittent black screen issues with all three of them. I'm thinking about entering the RetroTink product line for my PS2 and the RetroTink 2X Pro looks like probably the smartest option. Aside from the RetroTink 2X Pro, what other cables/products would you recommend to complete the connection/setup with it? My tv has RCA inputs (red, yellow, white), and HDMI ports. No component inputs though.

I imagine you’ve probably figured it out by now, but my only suggestion is to buy component cables for any console you own that supports it, and for the ones that don’t, get s video cables. Only use rca composite connection for the few consoles that don’t support a better output, like the nes.

Hi pal really enjoyed the video and very informative . Please can I pick your brains? I went all out and bought the 5x along with the HD retro gaming cables for my sega mega drive 2. I am having no luck with getting a good picture through my Panasonic 4K tv. I was trying to run through my Yamaha av rx v777 but was only getting sound but no picture and was not sure why? Some people said the av couldn’t process the signals properly. Not gonna lie as I have no clue regarding all this tech. Was just hoping to plug and play.
I have since plugged the 5x into an old Toshiba lcd tv and again the picture quality is very poor hurting the eyes. I just don’t remember the experiencing this sort of image many years ago when running in on my old Sony Plano CRT tv.
Please could you advise on how to set this thing up properly. Any advice would be much appreciated cheers

I see at 10:40 you state that the SNES and Genesis natively output component (YPbPr). I think that isn’t right. They natively output RGB with some flavor of sync. HD Retrovision’s claim to fame is the adapter inline that converts native RGB to component (YPbPr) for these consoles. The video is as good as RGB from SCART and follows the current trend against the SCART adapter.

Hey I don’t know if you’ll find this comment but on the off chance you do I had a question. I got the retro tink 2x to play GameCube on my monitor (32in AOC curved monitor) and it worked perfectly. I then decided to order the retrobit prism component cables for GameCube. I plugged the prism cables into the retro tink 2x and the picture quality appeared the same as before.. I then realized I needed to activate progressive scan mode (PSM) and when I did the picture split into 2 separate images. RetroTink 2x SCART - $129.99
      Inputs - RGB SCART
Additional Features: Scanlines, Comb Filter, Pass Through 240P
The RetroTink 2x SCART functions identically to the 2x Pro, the only difference is the input type is now an RGB SCART and not RCA-style Component or Composite input. For the Genesis, composite is a garbage signal, there's only so much you can do with it. That being said, the Genesis supports RGB right from the box. Replace the composite cables with component cables from HD retrovision or SCART cables from insurrection industries, you will be amazed how good your system looks. Same thing goes with the super nintendo, if it's the original one it supports RGB and you can do the same thing with RGB component video cables or SCART.
The super Nintendo is a nightmare video wise, so that is something to keep in mind. S-Video is the best signal you're going to get out of an unmodded system.
Unfortunately, there's nothing beyond composite for the NES without modding it. You don't even have the option for S-Video like you do on the N64.

@@RoXolid would firmware updates make any huge difference in quality? I just noticed I’m on an much older version.

I would say it's less than the quality and more in the ease of use and usability if that makes sense? Now newer firmware updates do include additional resolution options that your TV may or may not be able to process. For example, there's a 1400 p profile now but neither my capture card nor my television recognizes the signal

If you’re planning on getting the 5x just for the Wii, don’t do it, not worth it at all. Wii looks pretty bad and super jaggy edges on all games and the mclassic doesn’t really play nice with the 5x. You’re better off modding the Wii with hdmi mod and using the mclassic and the photofast 4k scaler.

Perhaps not for you but for others it is definitely worth it. Now I'll admit the 4K is a lot of money to have to lay out and for most people I think they could do just fine with the retrotink 5X.
