As a Kenyan, this was very triggering to watch! I can't believe that this was the mindset of the British as to why they wouldn't free my country. As some have pointed out, this was soon after India gained its independence from Britain so she was fully aware of the struggles of her nation. The British lad failed to mention that Britain was stealing a lot of the resources of their colonies than what they were putting back. They love to lay claim to building the railways as they did in India, but they were built to transport all the goods out of India. They forced the Indians to grow cotton instead of food and when Britain had a food crisis they shipped all the grain out of India to feed their people causing millions to die of famine in India. Nalini Nair worked as Civil Servant for India to many countries for years and I came to know from another video from TH-cam with a photo that she has been settled somewhere in Trivandrum, Kerala India. Now she is 80 years.
I like how they discuss with calm about these sensitive issues. The two girls discussing here were very impressive. The Norwegian I think he means what today we call Norwegians from North (nord norge).
Also, I love the fact that these delegates are upholding a certain level of reverence for each other despite debating on topics with the scope of extreme disagreement. I can imagine how such a healthy discussion could turn into severely heated arguments today. All in all, it was beautiful!

The Ethiopian girl had given an impressive remark, and being an independent nation had helped her to freely express her self as a young girl. She was also asking for the Kenyan independence at that time. She had given a substantial comments about the racism at the time, and she also given a good implication how the prejudice can affect others without their knowledge. We are literally one of the oldest African nations and take pride in that. These debates are profound. So smooth and polite. As much as they're against each other's arguments, they're all the more inclusive of each other's opinions and new information. For instance, when the Ethiopian girl talks about the development of Education in her country, the others are attentive and welcoming. "One cannot just give them a high school education after they have been illiterate for thousands of years" - John Throughout this debate, I do agree John has given some valid points, but this is just outright wrong. I think that John thinks that just because Kenyans were not literate in his language that they must not have any knowledge at all, deeming languages like Swahili as less educated or rich than English. I'm sure he gets this idea from capitalism and white supremacy, but this isn't all his fault - it's just what he was taught. As a British Indian, I have noticed that this prejudice and lack of knowledge of the past has not been learned from. I used to love history, but when I got to high school I realised that it was all written from only one perspective - the whites. I remember coming into a history lesson and my teacher telling us we were going to learn about slavery and the colonisation of India. I was ecstatic as I had hundreds of points to make, and knowledge to share. But the lesson completely took my naïve self by surprise. The curriculum stated that the British brought stability, money and railways to India. They thought it was a better idea to educate the young British generation about trains rather than the suffering they inflicted on the Indians. I remember vividly storming up to my history teacher at the end of class and demanding that the curriculum should be changed. I vented and raged to him about all the slavery and abuse that the British did and I remember shouting about how they r*ped Indian women, leaving them to die and how they had no respect for our culture, trying to re-educate us in a way that they thought was the only way. Their way. My history teacher was a white, British man. He sat and listened to me patiently, nodding and agreeing with my statements. When I had finished, he looked at me and told me I was right. That history IS only taught from the white perspective, it IS made to make the British look better and that everything that I was saying should be taught and recognised. But he also told me that as much as he'd like to change the curriculum, it most probably wouldn't be, as people are more concerned - like they always were, no matter how much they say they've changed - about their public image. I was so emotionally drained that I couldn't reply. He didn't tell me to disregard my views and just learn what I'm told I'm supposed to, but that having strong opinions were crucial to survive in this world of cruelty and that you will be stepped on without them. He told me to stick with them and fight with them and maybe one day that that would change the history books. I live by that now. I have found that I have grown to be a very opinionated, strong, young woman and I am proud of that and my heritage. I have also found that I have a strong affinity towards debating. I'm sharing this in the hopes that whoever reads this doesn't succumb to anyone else because they view themselves and their views as superior to yours. If you believe in something, fight for it.

As a Kenyan watching the ignorance of the British guy was offensive and sad at the time because he genuinely believed that they were helping us. I really respect Nilini for keeping a clear head because I'm not sure I would have done the same if I were in her place. The Indians were just as affected as the tribes in Kenya during the colonization, especially since they were forced to provide labor for the Kenya- Uganda railway even though there was no promise of any long term benefits for them. I am very proud of our representative, an Ethiopian girl. She is so decent and humble to express her stands free of any inferiority. She knows well what independence is and tries to fight for other black peoples as her forefathers have been doing. This is the essence of being an Ethiopian.

I am from Ethiopia but I would say, he grew up reading and government policies on news papers and listening to the radios. His points are very Articulate better than politicians today.

As some have pointed out, this was soon after India gained its independence from Britain so she was fully aware of the struggles of her nation. The British lad failed to mention that Britain was stealing a lot of the resources of their colonies than what they were putting back. They love to lay claim to building the railways as they did in India, but they were built to transport all the goods out of India. They forced the Indians to grow cotton instead of food and when Britain had a food crisis they shipped all the grain out of India to feed their people causing millions to die of famine in India. She was also asking for the Kenyan independence at that time. She had given a substantial comments about the racism at the time, and she also given a good implication how the prejudice can affect others without their knowledge.

I am Ethiopian, I came from Ethiopia, all of my family is from Ethiopia and none of my community members say that. Ethiopians know they are Africans, they know they are black but what they REFUSE to be classified is by the negative racial stereotypes that people put unfairly onto black people, which is 100% fair and a good amount of black people refuse to identify by it too. They refuse to identify with the concepts of "illiteracy", "vandalism", " poverty", etc. Just because Ethiopians don't identify with those negative tropes does not mean they don't acknowledge the fact they are Africans. We are literally one of the oldest African nations and take pride in that. We also acknowledge we are fall into the black category in societies where other ethnicies exist (whites, Latinos, Asians, etc.). We just refuse to identify with the negativity that some people try to attach to that label.

These debates are profound. So smooth and polite. As much as they're against each other's arguments, they're all the more inclusive of each other's opinions and new information. For instance, when the Ethiopian girl talks about the development of Education in her country, the others are attentive and welcoming. It is truly unfortunate that such debates don't take place any longer.
It gives me chills when I think, they might not be there in this world anymore. They might be around 82 years of age. They might be alive or dead. Throughout this debate, I do agree John has given some valid points, but this is just outright wrong. I think that John thinks that just because Kenyans were not literate in his language that they must not have any knowledge at all, deeming languages like Swahili as less educated or rich than English. I'm sure he gets this idea from capitalism and white supremacy, but this isn't all his fault - it's just what he was taught.
As a British Indian, I have noticed that this prejudice and lack of knowledge of the past has not been learned from. I used to love history, but when I got to high school I realised that it was all written from only one perspective - the whites. I remember coming into a history lesson and my teacher telling us we were going to learn about slavery and the colonisation of India. I was ecstatic as I had hundreds of points to make, and knowledge to share. But the lesson completely took my naïve self by surprise. The curriculum stated that the British brought stability, money and railways to India.
They thought it was a better idea to educate the young British generation about trains rather than the suffering they inflicted on the Indians.
I remember vividly storming up to my history teacher at the end of class and demanding that the curriculum should be changed. I vented and raged to him about all the slavery and abuse that the British did and I remember shouting about how they r*ped Indian women, leaving them to die and how they had no respect for our culture, trying to re-educate us in a way that they thought was the only way. Their way.
My history teacher was a white, British man. He sat and listened to me patiently, nodding and agreeing with my statements. When I had finished, he looked at me and told me I was right. That history IS only taught from the white perspective, it IS made to make the British look better and that everything that I was saying should be taught and recognised. But he also told me that as much as he'd like to change the curriculum, it most probably wouldn't be, as people are more concerned - like they always were, no matter how much they say they've changed - about their public image.
I was so emotionally drained that I couldn't reply.
He didn't tell me to disregard my views and just learn what I'm told I'm supposed to, but that having strong opinions were crucial to survive in this world of cruelty and that you will be stepped on without them. He told me to stick with them and fight with them and maybe one day that that would change the history books.
I live by that now.
I have found that I have grown to be a very opinionated, strong, young woman and I am proud of that and my heritage. I have also found that I have a strong affinity towards debating. I'm sharing this in the hopes that whoever reads this doesn't succumb to anyone else because they view themselves and their views as superior to yours.
If you believe in something, fight for it.

As a Kenyan watching the ignorance of the British guy was offensive and sad at the time because he genuinely believed that they were helping us. I really respect Nilini for keeping a clear head because I'm not sure I would have done the same if I were in her place. The Indians were just as affected as the tribes in Kenya during the colonization, especially since they were forced to provide labor for the Kenya- Uganda railway even though there was no promise of any long term benefits for them. As an Indian girl, I think the reason the indian girl had stood up for Kenya's independance was because we ourselves knew the struggle of a similar thing, after being colonised by the British for so long.
