  • Whether you love Tesla or hate 'em, they are the best selling EVs right now. So how does the new competitor from Geely brand Polestar compete? Yes, a Model 3 would be a better competitor, but we have a Y.

    Small correction - the Polestar 2 (launch edition like reviewed) does have cornering headlights and 12 ultrasonic parking sensors as well as cross-traffic sensors in the back bumper with automatic rear braking.

      From all full electric cars i really like the full ev cross-overs : Polestar-2 & Jaguar i-Pace, (small hatch ev : Hyundai ioniq 5 and latest KIA EV6)..
      From American market i like only the full electric SUV & Pick-ups like : Rivian (R1T & R1S) and GMC Hummer EV.. Instead of Tesla 3, i would get X-Peng P7 Performance.. ;0)

    Polestar headlights change when you turn the wheel (not sure if the lights move or different lights just turn on) and if you get the leather package it has cooled seats.

    The Polestar you tested does not have the Öhlins dampers installed.
    The performance pack (Öhlins dampers) has yellow seat belts and golden brake calipers which the car you tested didn´t have.

      After driving a Tesla for a few months, I wish every car would be designed like this. I prefer having nothing in front of me. No issues with moving my eyes a teensy tiny bit to the right to look at the speed, while I can still peripherally see the road ahead of me instead of looking down.

    • @DailyMotor
      @DailyMotor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I acknowledge personal preference, and I also acknowledge Teslas definitely have their weak points. But I don't know any owner who has an issue with the speed location.

      There must have been done some scientific research related to traffic security and what is the safest placement for important driver’s information.
      I would think the engineers at Torslanda, Gothenburg, Sweden (Polestar and Volvo employees) took safety into considerations when continuing putting the driver’s display behind the steering wheel.
      As to the video: The PS2 test car was not Performance Pack edition, but standard without the Öhlins dampers and Brembo calipers.

  • @benjaminsmith2287
    @benjaminsmith2287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Volvos are not designed by Geely. The Polestar 2 is the Volvo Concept 40.2. The Polestar 2 looks almost exactly like the Volvo Concept 40.2. If you want to know about who designed the Polestar there are plenty videos from Polestar and Volvo on how it was designed. No one from Geely was involved. Also, where it is built is not important. Volvo/Polestar will build their cars in Europe, China or the USA depending on what factory is tooled up. The Polestar 3, for instance, will be built in the USA, not China. Other Polestars may be built in Europe or China, just depends which model.
    The thing to remember with Polestar 2 is this platform is not pure EV. Volvo/Polestar has yet to introduce one that is. When they do, the compromises of the platform won't be there. For now, this shares with the xc40 gas cars. The Polestar 3, however, will be a real EV.
    In terms of driving, you seem to be objective. But you have to remember the xc40, the small SUV, addresses storage and cargo room that the Polestar 2 does not have. The Polestar 2 is not a large sedan. Polestar is meant to be mature, sober and give performance. I personally think the cockpit is modern if dark and the middle console area isn't the most efficient design and a bit obtrusive. Still, I like the look of the dash overall. As someone else mentioned, those aren't the Ohlins. The Ohlins cars have gold seatbelts. The Ohlins cars ride much stiffer and they have more grip.
    The reason for Polestar being expensive is the solidity and quality. Volvos are very solid cars and essentially, it's a Volvo. The materials are of a high quality too even if it isn't as evident in the Polestar as it would be in a Volvo. So, it's not like you compare performance or efficiency but you compare attributes and the fact that electric vehicles right now cost more than gas ones. I would pick a Volvo over anything due to the solidity of the vehicle but I would consider the Hyundai Ioniq. The Mach E, I don't know. It's good but not my style. Of course, Audi and Mercedes have even more quality and solidity. Tesla's are fun and such but they're just too stark for me and more noise creeping into the cockpit is a problem for me.

      @@gsblendzz What do you mean by it is made by Geely? Who designed this car? How is this car any different mechanically and design-wise than the Volvo xc40?
      You know there is a big difference between Volvo cars that is owned by Geely and Geely's line of cars that they make. The Polestar 2 was designed by Thomas Ingeniath and Maximilian Missoni, both formerly with Volvo and now are executives with Polestar. Geely did not design or make this car.
      It is fully electric but it shares with an ICE car, the Volvo xc40. Neither of them are EV only platforms.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gsblendzz They are made in China but that doesn't make them made by Geely. A lot of products are made in China. The Mac computer I'm typing on was made in China. The Yamaha digital piano I play was made in China. The shoes I wear were made in China but from an American company. I didn't say the Polestar 2 was a plug-in hybrid. I said it shares with the Volvo XC40 ICE car. The Tesla 3 doesn't share with any ICE car as Tesla doesn't make ICE cars. The upcoming Polestar 3 will be a from-the-ground-up electric car and will not share with any ICE car. It will also be built in the USA. At least the ones sold in the USA market will be. But the Polestar 3 and Volvo's new xc90 all-electric replacement will be virtually the same car with some design differences and a lot of performance differences.
      btw, Volvo may be buying itself out from Geely but there will be some joint arrangements with the two companies. Volvo owns half of Polestar but basically, and take this as information, Polestar is a spinoff from Volvo. It's like some of Volvo's personnel left to be spun off into a performance EV company while Volvo changes into a mainstream EV company. But they are sister companies.
      This is info the presenters should have had correct before making misstatements about what Polestar is.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gsblendzz Volvos are made in Sweden, Belgium, China and the USA. People are far too focused on China. Geely is a Chinese company and that's what I see them as. A company that owns Volvo that's based in China. They also own Lotus and part of Mercedes Benz. But it is a company, not a country. Under Geely, Volvo has moved upmarket and I think is more Volvo than they were under Ford. Now Volvo is changing into a sustainable EV car company that will make all-electric vehicles from their next model on and is dropping leather from their interiors (that's what they announced, nothing on if it will be an option). They're also working on technologies and ways to sell their cars and will not sell them through dealerships in the future. This is not the same "boxy but good" Volvos of yesterday. But the people that work at engineering Volvos and designing them are based in Sweden and are European and American. Like any other company, they'll share some platforms with their parent company, but Volvo is making their own cars and designing them and largely that's where Polestar gets it resources from. The Volvo car line. Geely makes their own cars and may use some Volvo technology, but they're two different lines of cars. Geely wants Volvo as one of their premium lines. Polestar is a premium performance line. They're in no way cheapening Volvo, they're moving Volvo upscale.

    Lots of misinformation in this "comparison", not to mention severely biased. The model you are in does not have adjustable dampers. That is in the "performance" package, which this does not have (unless someone changed the seatbelts). When I was looking at both, the infotainment system in the Polestar was much more intuitive than the M3 or MY. I also love how you say "I don't have to reach for the screen in a Tesla", yet you're clearly leaning forward trying to go through the menus. Teslas are great cars, if...and it's a big if...you are ok with every other electric car being a Tesla. To me, they've become extremely boring...and the Tesla fanbois have turned me off forever. Man are they obnoxiously annoying. I just couldn't see myself ever owning one. Still a wonderful car...I'm just glad there are so many great options today.
