I got a Nintendo 64 on release and this is how I perceived the graphics

Nothing compares to the feeing when Nintendo 64 came out compares to NES and SNES. I think it was the biggest jump a console has ever made. You couldn’t find one anywhere, and not because people were flipping them like they are today. It was a great feeling. Today, when Xbox Series X or PS5 comes out it’s like “meh, cool it’s a little better than before”. N64 was a game changer. This Render96 version is freaking amazing btw. Downloaded it a while back!

This just goes to show how far ahead of it's time SM64 was.. This game still plays great.
I liked the little detail of the Mario icon in the top left changing every time he changes his cap or even taking it of every time he comp his mustache after picking a star.

What I really like is how the model for Mario isn't just the modern design of Mario. If you look at him at 1:15 beside a render of modern mario, his face has that slightly narrower quality of the Mario 64 promotional material. Some other small proportional differences exist as well, but it overall has a really old-school quality. This stands in contrast to, say, the Mario 64 remake on DS where the design of Mario was based on Mario Sunshine, Double Dash, etc. since his design had been a little refined at that point.
That is the entire point of the mod 👍

Honestly I enjoyed the fact that they modeled it after the ads more then I would’ve enjoyed it just being the most realistic graphics possible, it really is cool how people were able to bring Nintendos vision to life

I think you may have missed the fact that render96's mission was to make the game look like the advertising. That's why Mario and Bowser looks kinda weird.

As absolutely awesome as this is I think it’d be a lot better if over time they worked on rounding out the level models because the characters don’t really fit in since they’re very rounded and well rendered while the levels despite having new textures are still really spikey, so at some point I think it’d be cool if they rounded out the levels a bit

The graphics are so good in this version, its similar to how I seen them as a kid playing on a box tv when n64 and ps1 was the hottest graphics out.

Dario, one of the guys who made the Sonic Generations Unleashed Project, actually has a code mod for Mario 64 in the works that adds true RTX to the game.
And I kinda have the hunch you'll replay it with that again, right? =P
Nintendo didn't even bother to update their Mario 64 in their switch collection release, meanwhile some random dude on youtube did a better job than an entire corporation.
I wouldn't mind a full redesigned remaster of this game but at the same time just the more updated cleaner graphics is nice too.

What's amazing is that this is a mod, on a source code port. This isn't a fan game, this is literally the same engine. Its unbelievable to see a genuine version of SM64 look like this.
