      The other video on my channel shows how to clean a whole clam and keep it intact. This video is more for recipes not requiring a whole clam (chowder, strips, etc.). If you got a better way of cleaning clams by all means, make a video. Just know that no matter how right you think your way is there will always be someone to tell you you're wrong, and it's not right. Critics are a dime a dozen, but best of luck.

  • @willong1000
    @willong1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had an uncle who was a commercial fisherman and lived in Westport, WA. It's a bit of a strain trying to correctly recall something from 55 years ago; but I think he said he would keep razor clams in a bucket of seawater to which he'd added cornmeal. I believe he said that the clams would feed on the cornmeal overnight and essentially flushed out their digestive tracts, making it easier for my aunt to clean them the following day. Has anyone else heard of that? Is it a real thing?
    EDIT: I should have Googled before posting. Purging clams is definitely a thing! Now, I guess I need to solicit opinions on the practice. Pro or Con folks?

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Purging clams is something I grew up doing and only recently stopped due to the recommendation by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. According to their website... It is not recommended to transport them in seawater, unless for just a short time. In seawater they continue to respirate and as a metabolic by-product they produce ammonium. In a closed container they begin to suck that back in and that can lead to an off-taste in the clam flesh. In freshwater they die and begin to deteriorate - the same when stored directly on ice.
      I have heard some people use aerators from fish tanks to add oxygen but have not tried it myself.

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SoundFishing2020 I appreciate the reply and the information. While he did not comment upon the practice, I did notice in a "Yakfish Taco" video, which I watched yesterday after viewing yours, that the video producer placed an aquarium aerator hose into a bucket of razor clams. I don't know whether the water contained cornmeal or not. It's an interesting topic.
      I just recently purchased my first fishing license since 1989. Back then, I was not much a fan of seafood except for halibut, which I obtained from a friend by trading elk venison. Having developed more appetite for a variety of seafood over the decades, and with the WA license actually being reasonably priced for an old fart like me*, I'm looking forward to supplementing diet with wild fish and seafood this year. I'll likely be viewing a few more of your videos to see what else I can learn. Thanks again!
      * (I can't say the same for Washington's turkey hunting license, which I refuse to purchase even though I inherited a property in Stevens County that is crawling with the birds.)

      @SoundFishing2020  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a lazy way to clean the clams. Also clams will not taste at its best. Thus, your compromising taste in a quick and easy way. The right way is to bring some seawater home and open, clean while they are cold and dump it into the seawater and rinse it gently. You throw away the sand settled at the bottom of the seawater bucket. Clean this way many times until no sand is visible. This method is tiring and hard way but it is the right way to clean the clams. Koreans never compromise taste of fresh clams. NO PUN INTENDED @ Sound Fishing.

    You better go back to school, that IS NOT the proper way to clean razor clams! Waste and ugly, they should be in one piece, so they lay flat and beautiful after fried. @@SoundFishing2020 I have never seen a North Oregon coast local clean clams like this. Fully intact windows, digger split and the guts and lungs removed with a flat lay. This all facilities a clean bread and fry. Also, you should be putting a batch of 15 or so into your sink first. Washing the sand out. Then blanching them with a pot of boiling water into the sink, followed immediately by the ice water. Then continue with more cold water to cool them back down. Use a knife to remove the ligament ties from the shell. Then place the clams into a chilled glass bowl, NOT INTO A SINK FULL OF WATER!! Then proceed with the far more delicate process that will entice your friends and family to enjoy this delicious meal again and again.

      Yep, there are definitely more ways than one to do something. Thanks for sharing your way. My way works just fine for my family and many other who have no problem coming back for more and more. For you to say it's wrong and your way is the only "right" way of doing it could be considered by some as ignorant or at the very least arrogant. Again, thanks for sharing your way.
