Worth the RISK of Buying a CRT TV on eBay?

- An urge to get a CRT back into my collection triggered a search over ebay and local sales listings. Unfortunately I couldn't locate a make / model near me so I ended up taking the plunge of buying via ebay and getting it shipper / courier to me. I was pretty nervous even though it was a highly rated seller; the price was decent so I took the risk. Was it the right decision? Let's see.

Glad it made it through the mail unharmed!! I do have one CRT, but I keep it at my workplace by my desk since storage at home is limited lol. I actually got it for free when someone had just simply put it out by the road with a FREE sign attached to it, haha. There is something about retro games that do just feel so much more at home when playing on them. Hope all is well!
You have got to be one of the bravest gentlemen around to order a CRT on eBay! The seller certainly packaged very nicely but you just never know how the post will handle the package. I'm happy it turned out well for you! I recently found a free 38 inch CRT on Facebook Marketplace that I picked up. IT WEIGHED A TON! But it's been a blast to play my older games on it and brings back memories. It's an RCA, but I know the Sony's are the best type. Happy gaming on your new CRT!
Absolute craziness isn't it mate :0). A real gamble, and not a gamble I'll be repeating any time soon.

Looks great dude. It looks like a much newer version of what I use. I got mine from ebay too years ago, but went and collected in person as I was terrified of all the CRT delievery horror stories. You're a braver man than I
Cheers mate!! I'm usually so risk adverse that shortly after buying it, I had the "What have I just done?" moment. Fortunately all is good but I don't think I'll be risking it again for some time.

Gorgeous telly. Can't go wrong with a Trinitron! Very risky (I always collect), but glad it made the trip.

Cheers Pete! Yep, I don't think I'd risk it again. I've been scouring over the likes of marketplace and vinted but nothing comes up (it's all pink Albas in Southend ;0)); feeling impatient I turned to ebay. Chat soon.

Cheer Marcus. Definitely a fair risk as sometimes even if well packaged the innards (technical term ;0)) can be thrown around if the parcel is knocked. For some reason I really struggled to find one local or within medium driving range. Have a nice weekend.

If I had room I’d soooo grab an old tv and hook up an original nes or master system or whatever, grab a top loader vhs player and have an 80s corner!!!! Glad it worked out Ed 👍👍

Cheers Dave!! Man, it was a bit of a risky manoeuvre. The vid may not have seen the light of day if it was broken haha. I've have been gutted ;0). I didn't some looking but couldn't find one near me and couldn't be ass'd to drive too far so resorted to the ebay haha.

I’m glad it survived the trip mate.
I’ll be honest I’ve got two of that very model and both I got off eBay back in the day.
It was a mixed bag to be fair. One was fine and survived the trip fine. The other survived, but from memory when I last used it the speakers didn’t function. Though thankfully you could plug speakers into the 3.5 jack on the front panel. I paid buttons for them as this was way before the retro CRT hype had taken over.
It’s a great set and the flat panel definitely gives it a bit of class.

Nice one! I'm always a bit weary of getting bulky things sent; even if well packaged, you don't know who's going to be handling it along the journey. Was more than relieved when it fired up. Prices will continue to rise I'm sure :0(.

Personally i wouldnt trust a CRT in the post. They are getting old and rickety. I drove 600 miles for my PVMs. Lol.

I bought my CRT off ebay but wasn't as lucky with the delivery, thankfully all still works perfect but arrived with a few cracks in the case despite being well packaged. That's the risk we take with such items isn't it.
Cheers Lee. I'm very happy with it. Makes such a difference when playing the older systems even though my son likely thinks it belongs in a museum (like me!).
Ah that's a shame albeit good that it still works. Sometimes regardless of the packaging these things don't make it through the postal network. I don't think I'll risk it again for a while longer as my luck will likely have already run out.

That’s a great series of CRT with superb sound, flat screen and great picture ideal for the light guns. I have the 21inch version. Weighs a tonne though. Nice one Ed. 😊

When I first saw how it was packed, I wondered what kind of unusual TV it was. Then I saw that it was actually a normal CRT. Around here, those kinds of TVs have the nickname "Guzonje" though I'm not sure of the exact term in English, but something like "TVs with butts" 🤣🤣🤣. I don't know what phone you have, but on some phones, there's an infrared port so it can be used as a remote control.
Hey dude! Yep, it was packaged a little strangely in terms of orientation but couldn't fault the seller on the protection. That's blooming brilliantly Guzonje hahaha. Love that.
Cheers for the advice. I tried it via an iPhone but struggled. I bought a fake remote that didn't work but got a universal remote from Amazon that works a treat. The only real reason to get it is to be able to remove the Channel number from the screen.

CRT shipped i've only ever collected them is well packaged last time paid £25 for a 32 inch Sony Trinitron. prices going up and up did you not think about just getting a monitor Sony Trinitron yes costs way more but has way more scan lines and the picture quality is incredible
Nice TV Ed like what we use to use back in the day plugging in our 8 bit systems lol looks like the screen is straight and not been knocked out of alignment

Cheers mate! I've played just our PS1 and Spectrum +3 so far and it's worth it for the pic; don't think I could have got a bigger tv though with the dimensions. Random about the bbl piece isn't it. Have yourself a fab weekend.
Looks like a beaut! I had a 23" Trinitron up until recently - was lovely, and the sound awesome. It unfortunately went to the man cave in the sky a year or so ago - now using my spare bush VHS combi thing which isn't as good.

Thats fantastic though,I bought myself tinitron when i was 18 for my ps2, with such a nice picture I do remember thinking “this is the peak of image quality” while watching an old ecw dvd on it 😂

Nice one Ed, You can't go wrong with a Sony, Glad to see it survived the journey 14 inch is a perfect size for the speccy, Once you get that control I hope you manage to set it up nicely, I strongly recommend you turn up the colour As I remember doing that as a kid if the television is set up for TV, Create addition mate enjoy it
Cheers Marc! I've always wanted a Sony haha. I'm unsure I've ever owned one (not even a modern) - sounds like a pants 1st world spoilt brat problem doesn't it haha.
I'll have a play with it, thanks for that. Bought a fake replacement remote that didn't work; fortunately sorted the refund and bought a one for all remote from amazon. Works the business but aside from being able to switch off the Channel Number I haven't played much with contract / brightness etc.

Bit of a gamble but it paid off ed buddy love the BBC Radio sign on the top of it. Hopefully you can get the right shade enamel to cover the scratches 🙂👍

Thanks mate! Very happy. I ended up grabbing a retrogamingcables cart lead and, even with my rubbish eyesight, it looks significantly better. Just played Ps1 and +3. Honestly feels like the speccy is much improved from when I was growing up - I can't remember what telly we had then but I don't remember it being a common brand.
First game I played via the Sony was Renegade ;0)

That’s a result dude can’t go wrong with playing retro on a crt as you know it’s how I do it….. oooo watching my vlog 😍. If you didn’t know you change phone shutter speed to 25 for crt.

Looks good, I picked up a slightly older 14’ Sony from Sadlers last year for £10, bargain.

The PC Engine looks the tits on a CRT and I see it has the AV connectors on the front, you could also go proper old school and use the RF with the SPECTRUM if you were feeling crazy!

@@RetroEdUK RASTAN II is something you can only appreciate if you grew up along side it, if you've come to it later in life chances are you won't understand it and it's Conan vibe or some of 80's Arcade gamings brutal collision detection, hit boxes, perfect timing and difficulty in order to take more money, it's one to be mastered, they'd have ruined it if it had put in an option for unlimited credits, but they didn't so you've still got to play it like the coin-muncher, I am so glad I listened to the guy who compared it to the Arcade version and not the people who'd had no experience with it. What did you honestly think? I do get the hate, I just think it's overkill, as it's easily as good as the Cab'.

We threw away a 32" Sony CRT only a few years ago.
I had no idea that gamers were starting to buy them.
I think we have one left in the cupboard.
26" I think. It's either a Samsung or Toshiba.
