I have a 32" Trinitron. Looks AMAZING! Even the sound channels are so clean, I hear instrumentation that I never knew existed on games I'd played for over 25+ years. The colors are vivid and don't bleed. I use S-Video and component cables. I've never seen PS1 & 2 games look so crisp until gaming on the Trinitron.
I recently bought a brand new 2007 model 14 inch RCA 14F512T still in its box with manual and remote, even the original batteries still wrapped in plastic were included. PS1, Saturn, PS2, and GameCube/Wii games look amazing when connected via S-Video. The Sony Trinitron might still have the edge in overall image quality, but I find that late model flat screen CRTs from any brand tend to have great picture quality as CRT tech basically peaked and most companies were very competent at manufacturing CRTs by the early to mid 2000s.
I have the 24” version of this T.V. It marked my return to owning a CRT set since I left them behind in 2011. Back then, I owned a Magnavox tube with RCA out. Played a lot of N64 and Xbox on it. I have to say, I was blown away at the quality of this Sony set. It caused me to seek out another, bigger set. While I still have this set, much to the dismay of my wife, I located a 36” 2001 KV-36FS13 which is my main set. I love the component hook-up to my vintage Onkyo 2.1 speaker setup. It’s my old-skool rig and I love it.
I have a '27FS120, found it on the freaking curb 3 years ago, still going strong! Love it! The geometry is a bit warpy in motion, even after messing with the service menu, but it's acceptable. It does have S-video and 2 component jacks, which is nice.
I have a KV-27FS120 that was given to me. I love it for my retro gaming and movie watching (Sony SLV-575UC VHS VCR). You mentioning recapping yours got me thinking I should pull the back off and inspect the condition of the capacitors. I will do that over the holidays. It is plugged into a power strip that is switched off when not in use so it is not under constant standby power, which would cause less stress on the components. I will soon have a vintage Trinitron to play with, a KV-5200. It was born the same year as me, 1981. Can't wait to give it a try. I love Trinitrons. I wish I had had them growing up, but, at least, I can enjoy them now.
I have the 24" model w S Video and love it. Yes i prefer curved sets over flat as that is what i grew up with in the 80s, but image quality with vintage gaming on S Video is great. If you can locate a 24" model I'd strongly suggest acquiring.
I realized that a comment thread from someone talking about being unable to disable the 'red push' was deleted after I countered with information about running color calibration in the service menu. I assure you all, it's possible. Component on my KV-24FS120 is very close to reference. Be aware that if you mess around in the service menu and throw stuff off enough and save it, you can damage or render your set inoperable. Also, you'll want to make sure you have a colorimeter. (Here's where I'm gonna recommend Lex Locatelli's video on calibration. I don't know alot about this stuff, but it's a good primer.) For component video, adjust the following values in the VP1 section: At the low end of the 10-point IRE scale, tweak RCUT, GCUT, BCUT, and SBRT. At the high end of the 10-point IRE scale, adjust RDRV, GDRV, BDRV, and SCON. These aren't the only things to touch; you should also be mindful of hue and chroma, which you can dial in on the SMPTE color bars.
I have the kv-27fs120.. same month and year.. its a TANK!! Haven't been able to find much on it but i assume its pretty similar to this or the kv24 you mentioned.. Awesome vid as always!
I have a kv-27fs170 which is actually a last trinitron from 2006 and really interesting things like built in digital connector for modern tv and they removed VM and other post processing to actually make it cheaper.
I was doing some HVAC work for this guy a good 7 years ago and he offered me a TV and I said yea I'll check it out and it was a 60 inch sony grand wega from 2004 I for sure grabbed it and it's the best TV I've ever had.
ayyo, I have the big chonky 36' ver of this set and I love it despite its WEGA convergence hertitage. It has 2 S-Video inputs and 2 more Composite inputs. my unit was manufactured in Feb 2007.
Here in Brazil we have the 21FS140 which came out even later than this one. Got one here with me. Good little flat set, but suffers from convergence problems.
I have the kv24 version. Had no idea it was the last triniton. Thanks for the insight into how good it is .I have a component modded n64 that looks great on it.
I have the 24" version of this TV and run everything in RGB to Component via a Retrotink and it looks fantastic. I usually play most of my MVS titles through it. I would love to have it recapped at some point and cleaned up. Thanks for the great video !
I have a KV-21LT1B & KV-14LT1B pair, both beautiful FD Trinitron's, very bright with one of the highest luminance outputs I have seen, also very sharp with deep inky blacks, I prefer my 25" curved Super-Black-Trinitron, as I believe the last generation curved Trinitron's to be the best tubes they ever made, probably why all the fancy 4:3 PVM's & BVM's use the curved tubes, the FD ones had to use much thicker glass fronts, which seems to downgrade the image quality somewhat, you get that beautiful lens effect with the curved sets that just makes everything pop, that said, the later FD Trinitrons had some gun upgrades so it balances out, it's probably just more a preference thing in the end, I do love how PS1, Saturn & N64 looks on a curved Trinitron though, and how good Dreamcast, PS2, GC, OGXB looks on an FD Trinitron, tube type also makes a difference depending on whether you're looking at sprite or polygon based graphics too, sprites like more rounded subpixel, polygons love a slotmask or aperture grill, and there is the best of both, the dot-trio, especially the Hitachi ED mask tubes (enhanced-dot-mask), which may be the best CRTs there are if you can actually find one.
I just picked up a KV32FS100 (all 160lbs of it) for free last night, with the matching stand. It has Component and S-Video (on one input, anyway...). I forgot how good these TV's were.
I have the 26" version of this Trinitron. I completely gutted in and installed it board and all into my arcade cabinet. I'd like to do an RGB mod to it because it's currently running from the actual arcade PC inside with an HDMI to RCA converter. Works, but I'm sure there are cleaner ways to do it.
I beg you explain me something! On most YT films refering to retro gaming up to sixth gen consoles (up to ps2) usually everybody complains on HDCRT. So how it is generally?? Is 16:9 fine? Is Flat screen fine? Is 100Hz in Europe fine? Or good ones are only flat crts but still with 4:3? I am rly confused 🤔 Regards.
I got one of these for 10usd like 2 hours/60 miles round trip from my house. Way happy I picked it up. The older guy said he played ghost recon competitively with it. He seemed pretty nostalgic and watched as I drove off with it. It's just sitting in my closet now that I moved to a smaller place but can't get myself to get rid of it. Also had a latin kv-21fa310 with subwoofer but it had magenta whites that I couldn't fix. Left it on the curb in the move 😭
The Sony Trinitron I found is a 32 inch KV-32FS210, not sure how much different it is to this one but it looks great. It is definitely BIG, but on the top left it just says Trinitron and not Wega, so I am confused if there is any difference.
I haven't got lucky with Wega CRT sets. I've bought two of them and both had a very nasty red color bleeding on the white color. It's a tube issue that is not repairable, unfortunately. But I would be happy if I got one of these in good shape. It's a great TV set.
I had a couple of the 24" version of this tv. Those along with 3 other later model trinitrons all had the "shaky" screen that you mentioned. I like to call it "the jiggles." I couldn't stand it, and once I noticed it I just couldn't unsee it. I got rid of all my trinitrons for this reason. Funny enough, I also have 4 pvms but none of them have this issue. I'm convinced this is a consumer trinitron problem across the board, I'd love to know a fix for it.
I have the 24 inch with s video. I found it for 40 bucks in my town. I dont own any testing suite *yet so I hope to fix the slight bend on the right side of the picture using the service mode
Do you have any videos on how to epoxy in a yoke, I have a 24i trinitron that has been completely disconnected from the 4 spacers and I’m having a hard time setting it without it bowing.
Yeah my KV-20FV300 has the shimmer too. A little worse that yours for sure. I’ve uploaded a couple videos on it. Really trying to figure out how to reduce it. My Toshibas have no shimmer at all.
Darn. I found a KV-32FS210 on the curb about 1-2 months ago and haven’t found a single video about it that lasts more than 30 seconds. It’s beautiful though when gaming! And weighs 170 pounds.. Mine came out in 2006 and I think it cost around $500-600 MSRP when I saw an old ad for it, not sure if that was its launch price though. Edit: mine has not been recapped or cleaned up, it’s in pretty rough shape, no remote and no front flap, but it still works. I would love to get it freshened up but atm I don’t have those skills 10:25 I have noticed in snes games in composite playing DKC when bananas go by there is ghosting or trails for the color yellow only. Not sure why that is but I assumed it was composite only, but you have it on component for a game on snes also
I have this same set but it sits in the garage. Lots of stuff here I didn't know. I wish there were someone in town that could work on mine because it has a very slight "twitch" in the picture and the geometry is off a bit. Other than that the color and sharpness make it perfect for retro gaming.
Have this tube, got it for $20 off FB marketplace a couple years ago and replaced a toshiba you did a review on that you gave the weakest review to lol it’s a solid set and works great for all media unlike my Toshiba that was terrible with movies on vhs and ld. I too noticed the shaking in the image in 240p and no one has found a solution to it but like you said from a distance you don’t notice. Even though it doesn’t support the scart mod I use mike chi’s rgb2comp converter and must say rgb content looks phenomenal on it through component. I hear the colors are more solid when doing a mod and using straight scart without component conversion but honestly difference seems subtle to me.
Great video. I have same shape late sony pal tv with scart rgb whitch comes with same remote control, sorry can't remember model number. Its great, I own about 20 crt including pvm's. This one definetly A categorry
I've had a few FS and FV series Sony sets over the years, but I prefer the look of my S series set with curved tube glass. The FS and FV sets had crappy filtering built into the component inputs whereas my RGB/Component modded S42 does not. The Wega sets can get more vivid than the curved glass S series Sony's, but that's really where the advantages end.
I recently got this very model. I've been pretty impressed by it - it's got better geometry and convergence than my 32" Trinitron. The lack of S-Video is a bummer, so I decided to pick up a Koryuu for that purpose. It's not perfect on resolution switches, but it's more than good enough.
@@jaystephens3115 Yep yep. It was really designed more with the OSSC scaler in mind, but also works just fine with CRTs. It's still digital in its underlying design, which is why it doesn't perfectly handle resolution transitions, but it's still extremely fast, only showing a bit of jitter before locking in again.
i dont have this model...but...with setting adjustments it is the absolute best for retro games...I found mine in the garbage...250 lbs...only drawback for retro gaming is no lightguns due to hd processing
This is one of the last NTSC set lines from Sony. In America, we didn't get those late model/style CRTs very often. Sony fed the US Bravias after this one.
Antes de ayer vendí esta No tenía espacio para tenerla en la casa de mis abuelos, lo unico malo que tenía era que el video compuesto 2 no se veía y que no tenia control😢
I had this tv the speakers 🔊 were good had good bass but I remember the picture wasn’t that great the model before this one was better it was clearer but terrible speakers 🔊 It might be the same but I like the Sony KV-20FS100 picture was better I currently have a Kdl-32ex500 never given it up.
i remember seeing so many of the flat screen trinitrons at thrifts in 2010. but my heart was set of a curved xbr set. all i wanted was s-video for snes/n64/ps1/ps2. plus i really dislike the silver plastic of that era.
I recently rescued the 24 inch model (KV-24FS120) from the trash, but the picture has a very strong red tint. Do you have any suggestions for this problem? I posted pictures of it to ask for help on reddit a few months ago, but no one responded. Here's a link to my reddit post if TH-cam will allow me to post the link: www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/1btqzt4/can_this_sony_trinitron_kv24fs120_red_tint_be/
@RetroTechUSA Except mine doesn't have the s-video output, but it does have component output I wonder why Sony removed the s-video output. That connection should have been a standard, especially when crt TV was on their way out. Mine was manufactured in 2004 or 2005
The MSRP price even in 2024 standard got you OLED like picture quality. Now you have to spend 5x more for an OLED TV which can rival a picture quality of a CRT yet can’t do composite, s-video, and even component. Input lag still awful, motion blur still there, and you can’t still properly scale 240P to look just as sharp (low resolution will look bad on oled but not on crt). Oh for $450 you might be getting a Chinese made TCL or Hisense (more like Lowsense) LED TV. It’s so bad that my Toshiba CRT look far better than those LED TV in fact it better than QLED and mini LED and OLED in motions and scaling.
i despise the fact that if i go look to get this one i pay the price of a god damn BRAND NEW PS5 console, and i dont even know if it is working and if stops working i dont even know where to take it to fix it, i hate the people that took advantage of the retro boom to pretty much rob the people that love retro games
Those last generation USA models are really appaling. The design team did not had any goesting to make anything of these models. Silver painted beige plastic must die, but 10 cubic feet of it is too much to bear in ones life. I rather have a black monitor style mid nineties Trinitron any time, size does NOT matter.
I've got Trinitrons made after 2008. This was one of the last NTSC Trinitron 20" TV lines to be produced. There were more Trinitrons made later for monitors and other regions.
The title says nothing about the “last Trinitron” in the thumbnail so you’re a moron. If you actually paid attention you’d know he said it was one of the last “NTSC” Trinitron models made. Get a life.
What did you think of this videos intro?
Since you asked... Like many of your videos, if I have it set to highest quality, the TH-cam app freezes on the initial static
Loved it
Sweet intro with the streets of rage 2
I like the glamor shot with gameplay.
i personally prefer cutting straight to the raw footage but id love to see where it goes with time
The older I get the more I appreciate these CRTs! Heck I even game on composite and love it!
Just got one of these exact models that was really low hours! the guy said he intended to use it for security but never really got around to it. Factory remote and everything... Just had been sitting in his basement practically since purchase. And it was my first CRT sice childhood! Absolutely fallen in love since, bought component cables for my PS2 and Wii, and thus the CRT craze is heavily cemented in me

dang, that is a lucky find. How'd you find this guy??
How do you check the hours on this tv?
That's awesome!

Hola yo tengo la Sony Wega KV29FS120 es buena? Vale la pena? O es mejor votarla ya
Boa tarde essa tv é bivolt automático?
What’s a Koryuu? Is it something that converts s-video to component?
@@jaystephens3115 Yep yep. It was really designed more with the OSSC scaler in mind, but also works just fine with CRTs. It's still digital in its underlying design, which is why it doesn't perfectly handle resolution transitions, but it's still extremely fast, only showing a bit of jitter before locking in again.
i dont have this model...but...with setting adjustments it is the absolute best for retro games...I found mine in the garbage...250 lbs...only drawback for retro gaming is no lightguns due to hd processing
I have the KV-SZ29M31 and it needs a major service, still works but here in South Africa nobody repairs or services CRT's just LED
Does anyone know of anywhere/anyone in the UK who services CRTs? Thanks.
I like this style of video! The tv not so much. I’ve had 4x 20fs100/120s and all had crazy screen jitters so I gave them away ☹️
Is there a production date on this crt? I have a Euro Sony made in march of 2006 😊(last 50 hz).
This is one of the last NTSC set lines from Sony. In America, we didn't get those late model/style CRTs very often. Sony fed the US Bravias after this one.
I had a buddy with this tv growing up and years later I hate that we smashed the tube on it before we threw it in a dumpster.
That RRP was surprising affordable
if this had S video then i'd buy this TV locally in a heartbeat
Antes de ayer vendí esta
No tenía espacio para tenerla en la casa de mis abuelos, lo unico malo que tenía era que el video compuesto 2 no se veía y que no tenia control😢
What’s the BEST consumer CRT tv?
In my grands house this still exists in mint cond unused
Kinda suprised it didnt, since my uncles are yters who are into tvs, oled and such
tengo uno parecido pero es modelo 5.1 sony vega kv 21FA515
I had this tv the speakers 🔊 were good had good bass but I remember the picture wasn’t that great the model before this one was better it was clearer but terrible speakers 🔊
It might be the same but I like the Sony KV-20FS100 picture was better
I currently have a Kdl-32ex500 never given it up.
Pretty sure this can be s-video modded. It likely shares a jungle chip with other models that do have s-video
i remember seeing so many of the flat screen trinitrons at thrifts in 2010. but my heart was set of a curved xbr set. all i wanted was s-video for snes/n64/ps1/ps2. plus i really dislike the silver plastic of that era.
CRT is still very Good 😎
Shopvac bro. 3:08
I like the curved screens better though
You need to hunt down a 20-in D-SERIES or Toshiba 20-A42 nice consumer curve glass CRTs or if you have the money just buy PVM
Oh yeah I have a few pvm’s and a bvm. I was just saying I prefer those to my flat screen Sony crt.
I recently rescued the 24 inch model (KV-24FS120) from the trash, but the picture has a very strong red tint. Do you have any suggestions for this problem? I posted pictures of it to ask for help on reddit a few months ago, but no one responded. Here's a link to my reddit post if TH-cam will allow me to post the link: www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/1btqzt4/can_this_sony_trinitron_kv24fs120_red_tint_be/
I have one of these a 20"
This is the 20" one. Congratulations, it's a darn good crt.
@RetroTechUSA
Except mine doesn't have the s-video output, but it does have component output
I wonder why Sony removed the s-video output. That connection should have been a standard, especially when crt TV was on their way out. Mine was manufactured in 2004 or 2005
Flabbergasting. They blanked out the s-vid they saved a penny when there is component
I own the 24, and I’ll be buried with it.
Japanese version is better since you get composite svideo component (dterminal or av multi) and RGB (av multi)
Nice looking set, the only think that could make it better would be S-Video
i despise the fact that if i go look to get this one i pay the price of a god damn BRAND NEW PS5 console, and i dont even know if it is working and if stops working i dont even know where to take it to fix it, i hate the people that took advantage of the retro boom to pretty much rob the people that love retro games
Those last generation USA models are really appaling. The design team did not had any goesting to make anything of these models. Silver painted beige plastic must die, but 10 cubic feet of it is too much to bear in ones life.
I rather have a black monitor style mid nineties Trinitron any time, size does NOT matter.
man i hate packing peanuts so much
Sony stopped making Trinitrons in 2008
I've got Trinitrons made after 2008. This was one of the last NTSC Trinitron 20" TV lines to be produced. There were more Trinitrons made later for monitors and other regions.
these tvs have horrible dot crawl and very bad picture snow tilt glitch from single chip design
Ok enough of this "last Trinitron" clickbait garbage. It's never actually the last one. Please stop.
The title says nothing about the “last Trinitron” in the thumbnail so you’re a moron. If you actually paid attention you’d know he said it was one of the last “NTSC” Trinitron models made. Get a life.
Which Sony chassis is better for retro gaming, BA or BX-1?
