  • We are so psyched to bring back our very first guest of The Old Man and The Three podcast, Portland Trail Blazers Superstar, Damian Lillard for our 150th episode. This is a TRULY special conversation that we hope you all enjoy as much as we did. Topics include: Dame's historic scoring stretch and how it was birthed out of necessity, how he attacks drop coverage and other defensive schemes, why he isn't totally satisfied with his 71 point game, if he believes anyone in The NBA can score 100 points in a game, his unique shooting technique that allows him to confidently pull-up from deep, how he feels The NBA has changed with the 3-point revolution and when he felt comfortable to start taking 10 a game, why he feels the NBA's de-emphasis on veterans is hurting the game, how he feels the NBA is changing for the worse and how he finds peace in all the discourse/noise, why he also feels 'rings culture' is cheapening the game, what he personally defines as a 'successful career', the reality of why he's choosing the NBA path he's currently on instead of joining a super team, reliving his game winners against The Houston Rockets and The Oklahoma City Thunder and so much more.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter TH-cam channel today for more NBA analysis, player interviews and highlights.

Wtf. The comfort in which he says “I’m scoring 50 points tonight” is outrageous. That’s how good that man is. Most stars and even hall of famers don’t have multiple 50 point games let alone one and this man is out here feeling that a 50 is coming before he reaches double digit points. He truly is one of the greatest scorers ever. My man casually saw a 50 point game coming and dropped 71 instead.

I think the reason nba is so different now is the constant coverage on sports shows and the constant discussion on instagram etc. I remember watching the dunk contest last all star weekend and I was enjoying it when I wasn’t checking instagram at the same time. After the contest I opened my phone and my perspective of the contest completely changed after seeing how people were making fun of certain dunkers, referees and just the negative vibe that’s on these social platforms all the time. Same happens when watching games and just enjoying the game without reading what other people say about it. Social media is just overall toxic and ruins the game for me.

Damian Lillard is proof positive that athletes are the complete opposite of the dumb jock stereotypes. He's one of the most thoughtful but also well spoken athletes I've ever listened to. And by well spoken I don't mean "proper" I mean you can see that he's able to take his complex thoughts and lay them out in ways that anyone can understand. That's a real talent that isn't always easy.

All time interview. JJ - One thing I think could really bring you to the next level would be video examples in conversation. What I gather from interviews like this about Dame, is it feels like Dame’s identity isn’t wrapped up in basketball. And that’s dope cause it shouldn’t. His career will come to an end one day. But his family, and meaningful relationships will still remain after his NBA career.
