Tell Laura I Love Her is a ballad, written by Jeff Barry and Ben Raleigh, by the American singer Ray Peterson from 1960.
The song tells the tragic story of a man (Tommy) who is in love with a woman (Laura). Tommy wants to marry her. In order to have enough money to buy a wedding ring, Tommy enters a stock car race, despite being the youngest and least experienced driver. Tommy dies during the race, and his last words are "Tell Laura I Love Her". Initially, the lyrics of the song were about an accident at a rodeo, but they were changed at the request of the record label.
Peterson's version was released as a single by RCA Records. It reached the top 10 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Decca Records decided not to release the single in the United Kingdom because the lyrics were said to be tasteless.
The song was also recorded that same year by British singer Ricky Valance for the Columbia record label. His version was published in the United Kingdom. Despite the BBC boycotting the single for weeks, it became a number 1 hit in the UK Singles Chart. After this success, Decca released Peterson's version in the United Kingdom, but without hit success.
Dutch singer Albert West released a cover of the song in 1973 and reached number 8 in the Dutch Top 40.
David Spencer (10 April 1936 - 12 June 2020), known professionally as Ricky Valance, was a Welsh pop singer. He was best known for the UK number one single "Tell Laura I Love Her", which sold over a million copies in 1960. He was the first male Welsh singer to have a UK number one single hit.
Born as David Spencer in Ynysddu, Monmouthshire, Wales, the eldest of seven children, he sang in his church choir and worked in a coal mine and a factory before joining the RAF at the age of 17.

Het nummer werd datzelfde jaar ook opgenomen door de Britse zanger Ricky Valance voor het platenlabel Columbia. Zijn versie werd wel in het Verenigd Koninkrijk uitgegeven.
