  • Chapter 17 Helen, along with her aunt and uncle attend a dinner party at Mr. Wilmot's. In attendance are Annabella Wilmot (Mr. Wilmot's flirty niece), and her cousin, Milicent Hargraves plus Arthur Huntingdon! Helen and Arthur have a chance to speak together. Arthur calls Helen his angel but Helen's aunt is alarmed at how cozy the two of them are becoming, off by themselves to look over a painting. Later, back at home, Helen and her aunt have a long talk. Her aunt asks Helen if Huntingdon is a good man. Helen says she is not sure. There are rumors he had been involved with a married woman. Helen says she doesn't believe those rumors. Helen says even if Huntingdon has moral failings, she could be his helper in this. She could set him on the right path. Her aunt thinks otherwise.
Chapter 18 Helen's uncle Maxwell organizes a hunting party for September, among the party is Mr. Wilmot, Mr. Boarham, and to Helen's delight, Mr. Huntingdon. Annabella and Milicent are coming too, plus a friend of Huntingdon named Lord Lowborough. When all the company are in the parlor after their meal, Huntingdon looks through Helen's paintings and sketches and finds a drawing of himself on the back of one of her paintings. Amused, he says he wants to keep it. Helen is very embarrassed by this and acts coldly toward him afterward. Later, Helen has the same mortification when Huntingdon comes into the library where she is painting, and finds another sketch of himself. Exasperated, Helen rips the sketch in two and throws it in the fire. As a result of this action, Huntingdon punishes Helen by speaking and flirting only with Annabella for the next five days.
Chapter 19 Annabella is flirting with both Huntingdon AND Lowborough. But she is more interested in Lowborough because he is a lord. She sings a song at his request. The song is sung beautifully and Helen is moved to tears, thinking that she has lost Huntingdon to Annabella. Huntingdon is pleased to see his emotionally manipulative tactics have worked. He is certain Helen is crying over him! He later corners her in the library, insisting he loves her and must have her and demanding she say she loves him and saying he must marry him. When she mentions she would only at the approval of her aunt and uncle, he says for her to talk them into it. Her aunt surprises the two of them by opening the door and seeing them in each others' arms. She is angry at Arthur and he makes up a half truth about Helen expressing her need for her aunt and uncle's approval. Helen's aunt says it is not for discussing today, but for tomorrow. She sends Helen to bed kindly. She is worried that Helen is too ready to fall for Huntingdon, whom she does not trust.
