I wore it for a full week in greece, making it earn its share with plenty of trecking, lung diving and whatsoever you can imagine in a week of active tourism. And I gotta say, few days into it, it finally clicked in my head. No matter what I did to it during the day, how high I was head diving in the sea, how many bumps it would take against walls and undersea rocks... it calmly kept on ticking on and on, with a deviation of 2 sec per day. Stubbornly steady. And that blue, sunburst dial under the sun! Such a gorgeus sight! I've wanted the blue dial version of this Watch since I saw one in 1997, and back then it was expensive. To my surprise and absolute delight my daughter bought me the blue sunburst dial model for Christmas 2021 to replace my 9 year old Citizen Pro Master Eco drive Dive watch. I replaced the black rubber strap with a Dark Blue NATO strap, its my daily day time wear, I've done a couple of dives with it and its attracted interest because of its History, I'm very happy with it ,and its a nice addition to my collection, and it has a hacking movement.
It's 7 years later and I'm watching your review for the third time... 3 days ago I got me a NY0040 in black, and it is my first automatic and my first proper diver watch. Your description is spot on, it's absolutely comfortable on a small wrist. Great rubber strap, let's the skin breathe while securing the watch. Finally, the current models have hacking.
citizen promaster is simply the best diver watch if we consider the INCREDIBLE affordable price for such INCREDIBLE quality and amazing design and style. Simple the best watch for a man to wear in every moment [non only a diver watch] of the day in every circumstance [at sea, diving, at work every day, free time, elegant outfit at evening events, etc]. You don’t need other watches, the promaster it’s the full package, period.
Hot damn, best quality video production of any 'review' channel dare I say? I've decided this is going to be my first automatic, now I just to find one on special. Cheers
I own this and the skx....and for me.its simply no contest the citizen takes it by a country mile,it's robust, far more accurate, reliable slimmer on the wrist, the bezel is far grippier, the comfort on the wrist with the crown at the 8 position is sublime, why don't all watches do this?... honestly I'd take this over just about anything....and let's not forget that the miyota 82-- series has been around since 1977,it's one of the most proven movements there is,the 7s26 can't even come close,I got married wearing my skx...but my citizen to me is utterly indispensable,it's only watch I'd be crushed if I lost And as a final bonus it looks amazing on any strap/bracelet you care to mention,it's not just great "for the price"....it's simply great an all time under rated, and deeply understated classic. Of all my mechanical pieces this is my absolute favourite, and it's not even close. If you're in the market?by it!
Been looking at this piece for years. It's just beutiful and looks so classic. I've been wearing a Seiko Turtle as my daily beater for the last months and thinks It's a bit big. If you know the turtle how would you compare it to the NY0040? Best regards Seb
I found a blue one for $230 US and I love it. I’m left handed and it wears just the way I want. It looks great on Natos and Zulus. Thanks for the excellent review.
I bought this watch based on your review and another video you did. It's my first mechanical watch! 2021 builds use Citizen's 8204 movement which is hackable! The ND tables are gone from the band though. I love the blue dial, but I got the black one because of how inky black it is. Stunning watch for the money. Thanks for the content. It really helped me decide!
I brought the ny0086-16l pepsi just before xmas. And I noticed mine is hackable and doesn't have the decompression writing on the strap. So I wonder if mines a 2021 build?
I recently bought the blue version with its beautiful blue sunburst dial and I've just ordered the black dial version which is still readily available here in Europe. Wearing the watch really gives me lots of pleasure. Cheers!
I used to own a navy one of these, I loved it. I gave it to a friend after enjoying his admiration of it and both of us enjoying one too many glasses of wine.
I was thinking that im an outdated person who looking for a citizen watch from decades ago for scuba diving. because none of recent dive watches suits me. I actually just ordered and now im waiting for this watch. Your review sums up all my inner battle of choosing promaster and skx. after tons of reviewing i finally choose promaster over skx. skx turns out too bulky, too flashy and too mainstream. I just still cant believe you did this review on 2016!!!! Keep up the good work, i really enjoy your channel. cant wait for the duels. cheers ;)
finally a citiizen promaster...........love those military watches marathon, glycine, etc i love citizens i think i've said that before personally i think the promaster definitely gives an skx a run for its but both great
Killer intro and clip TGV ! FYI I've managed to purchase 2 of these divers since watching your reviews. A blue and a black version. They're both keeping time within +4 to 5 sec/day !! I also flip the watch around so my right hand adjusts the crown easily. Keep up the great work and Thank you \m/
Watching the video after 4 years. You have changed so much TGV. Anyway I bought the blue version of that piece which isn't hard to find in Greece. It is a great piece and I'm looking forward for having great adventures with it!
Me and my girl found this watch on holiday two months ago and she decided to gift it to me as a christmas present. This watch is just great for me. It can take a pure beating, i can wear it while diving and it just looks breathtaking in person. Might switch to a nato strap later on though :)
I’ve had my eco drive pro master diver for about a year now and it’s easily in my top 3 favorite watches! I thought about putting it on a NATO strap but there’s just something unique with the rubber strap with the navy dive tables. I may buy a NATO to throw on from time to time!
I've owned one of these for 20 years & it's been superb. not a single functional issue. In some respects superior to my swiss divers that were multiple times more expensive. very robust & extremely comfortable. people seem to miss reviewing the sides & back of the watch which is a big part of what sets it apart - the profile of the body is sublimely contoured & engineered. I *believe* Citizen stopped producing these in Japan at some stage during production & only the movement was Japanese thereafter. also, my early model has the engraved logo back & more nicely machined gold-coloured crown than the one reviewed. the earlier ones were nicer ;-)
Just came across this old school video of yours. This type of in-depth look at timepieces is what brought me to your channel. Not just the watch itself but all the history surrounding it. Onward and upward, friend!
I just bought a NY0040-09E (one E), black looks exactly like the one in this video from a European dive shop. $170 + $50 in tax and shipping. The watch shipped from Germany and the dial says 8203 caliber but the back says 8204 and this watch hacks. Was not expecting that. Very happy.
Great watch. I had one, but I sold it - nothing wrong with the watch, just needed the money at that time. Anyway, I like very much design of the bezel - it's very distinctive to the watch. The only thing, I don't like is greenish tone of the lume in comparison with SKX lume. Great review, Tristano! Can't wait for the duel!
i think, since the promaster has been updated (serial-no now starts with R instead S) and skx-prices have risen, it is the better choice and you get a screw-down-crown and hacking. still one of the best channels. best regards from germany
The model supplied to the Italian Navy special forces was stamped "Marina Militare" on the dial and also reported the sign 500M, at the bottom of it. Over the years, the Squales and the Breil Manta (navy stamped as well) were also supplied. High quality watches at an affordable price, but not now: they are also sold at double or triple their old market price...
After a eight month hiatus from purchasing watches(damn you Covid) I’m going back in purchasing a couple of modestly priced watches I’ve always wanted. This one arrives today. It’s the second time I watched your review and it’s great! thanks!
Why do I keep watching this video? I've owned this watch for years and I watch the video to remind me of how proud I am to have it. The thing I love most about this over my 3 SKX's is the bezel. It's much easier to use with a 60 click, much easier to grip, and perfectly aligned. I trust this watch with my life and it's been running since 1997 with no service. I know because it was my father's since then, and I was only born in 95! So it's almost as old as me. This is now the SKX killer because the SKX goes for no less than 300 now!!!
Hi, TGV. I've been following your channel for the past few months and glad to see your thoughts today on this Citizen diver. I've had the lume dial version of this watch for about half a year and love it. I can't wait to see the duel with the SKX.
I was thinking that im an outdated person, looking for a citizen watch from decades ago for my scuba diving. I actually ordered and waiting for this very watch. Your review really sums up my internal battle choosing between skx with the promaster. Cant believe you did this on 2016. Thank you for your review ;)

I have this same watch that I bought back in 1997 the year it came out. The original strap broke long time ago and I have replaced it with a metal band recently since I have started wearing it again. Mine is pretty scratched up though since I used it daily back then and wore it diving regularly. It's a great watch period!
The Italian Navy is much vaunted, I have two of these, one black dial, one with a really bright green dial, witch is still unboxed. Presumably divers swim underwater , forwards, therefore it makes perfect sense to place the crown away from the slip stream. Its a masterpiece !
Hi TGV - Thanks for the Citizen Presentation. I've not considered a Citizen before but was impressed with its features. Also, really liked the intro action. Cheers!
Cheers from 2024. I just picked up 2 of these. One new and one vintage. The vintage has the 8202. I love the left side crown. But I do rotate the watch upside down to operate it lol. Great video - thank you.

Nice review my friend....I,m in the Citizen camp on this one...Own 4 NY0400,s.....Compared to my 2 SKX,s......And I have found the Citizen Movement to be more accurate, also prefer the Crown Position on the Promaster, and the Bezel is one of my favourites. Come back to this video as this citizen is the new king over the skx007 since the prices for the skx have gone crazy , citizen definitely bang for buck now, just purchased one myself.
I really thought I had a good range of divers, but that crown at the 8 o'clock position looks quite different and needs to be in my collection! haha thanks for the review TGV, nice video as always!
I will buy this watch some day! Its indices and hands really make this watch unique and interesting. The quality and style make this watch look very expensive and like a timeless classic. But thats just my opinion and taste! Thanks again for these entertaining and well made content Sir!
The lowest price you can find it in Europe now, is around 180 Euros. Most stores sell it for 200-250 euros. In a big retail store i found this Citizen ny0040 for 305 Euros!!! I bought it 1 year ago for 150 E. This model consider to be one of the best watches of Citizen and the price will go up as the time goes by. Especialy if the production stops

I follow your channel for a while now. I been seeking for reviews of the 2016 version of this watch before I buy it. I never saw you reviewing a citizen before so i wasn't hoping for this review. Keep up with the good work. cheers.
Tristano, I enjoyed the video. The heritage of the watch is wonderful and adds romance. The nuance of the dial is fun. Keep up the great work. SKX09 and three Citizen not or. :). Tom
Before I bought my skx I of course considered the citizen. And i think it technically gives more for the money. But i picked the Seiko not only because i liked the more simplistic styling, but the brand has such a rich history in dive watches i knew i could trust the skx to last forever.
Having subscribed and watched a few of your videos as a newcomer to all things Horology; I took the plunge (no pun intended) and after a lot of searching I finally got my hands on one in the UK! I love this watch! Stick it on a NATO strap and its really comfy. For a £150 automatic its really reliable. Mine's gaining about 1 second a day.
Dear Mr. Gentry, thank you for the awesome HD close ups on this watch. And thanks for such a comprehensive review. But I do wish you ill fortune for enabling my watch addiction... I just bought one of these off ebay from a seller in Poland. These things are rare in Canada eh? Keep up the good work!
The Citizen Promaster is, of course, a competitor to the SKX, but the SKX is known between, watch enthusiasts, actors, and so on... It's the most entry-level top of mind reliable and respected watch that took years to be that well recognized. All the other competitors, like this particular citizen promaster if they achieve to take the crown off the skx it would take time to happen. Recognition takes time. Very nice intro, as always Trist. Best regards, Fabio.
I don't own a Citizen, but I'd like one of these. But not many online stores sell them. There is a newer eco drive version (BN0150-28E) with the crown on the right side like a SKX. Citizen seem to be doing well these days. The Royal Navy now issue the Citizen BN0000-04H. Off the shelf and no modifications or arrow mark. Cost of procuring divers watches meant they went Rolex to CWC and now Citizen. Will there be talk on watches used by the Royal Navy.

On my birthday wish list is the blue dial version
Got the blue dialled version for Christmas 2023
I have one and mine is only 5+ sec fast per day. Love this watch! Nice video and review!
Hot damn, best quality video production of any 'review' channel dare I say? I've decided this is going to be my first automatic, now I just to find one on special. Cheers
I own this and the skx....and for me.its simply no contest the citizen takes it by a country mile,it's robust, far more accurate, reliable slimmer on the wrist, the bezel is far grippier, the comfort on the wrist with the crown at the 8 position is sublime, why don't all watches do this?... honestly I'd take this over just about anything....and let's not forget that the miyota 82-- series has been around since 1977,it's one of the most proven movements there is,the 7s26 can't even come close,I got married wearing my skx...but my citizen to me is utterly indispensable,it's only watch I'd be crushed if I lost
And as a final bonus it looks amazing on any strap/bracelet you care to mention,it's not just great "for the price"....it's simply great an all time under rated, and deeply understated classic.
@@Sebastian-ot6cp the citizen will absolutely wear smaller than the turtle.
Mine wears like a mid size diver on my wrist
@@carllatham1558 Same. Check it by the serial number. But as I understand it the 8204 movement is a 2021 update.
@@Getsome757 I looked on the rear and 8204 is etched into the case un front of more numbers.
Also the triangle on the bezel is like orient's kamasu
I recently bought the blue version with its beautiful blue sunburst dial and I've just ordered the black dial version which is still readily available here in Europe. Wearing the watch really gives me lots of pleasure. Cheers!
Hey, I know this is an old comment, but I am kind of wondering if I should get the black or the blue version of this watch. What is your opinion?
I used to own a navy one of these, I loved it.
I gave it to a friend after enjoying his admiration of it and both of us enjoying one too many glasses of wine.
The stunning deep black ink dial got me loving this more than the SKX
Just bought the blue version from Germany after watching your review. Amazing watch and brilliant review, TGV!
+Venguin Congrats! Sure you will love it.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
I'm re-watching the intro because it's so good +the urban gentry
+Isaac Schiff-Lewin Thank you Isaac, very kind :D

You looked so serious back then. Now you look happy. I´m glad about that. Keep it up with the videos, better and better every day. Cheers!
Ok, l'intro mi ha decisamente emozionato, e se avevo ancora qualche dubbio sull'acquisto ho assolutamente risolto. Thank you man!
Keep up the good work, i really enjoy your channel. cant wait for the duels. cheers ;)
+dheemazs Thank you, enjoy the Promaster.
Best regards,
TGV
where did you buy it?
I've been having a hard time finding this watch as well
I've been around 30 meters deep several times with the promaster and no problems at all. Every 5 years I change the rubber rings, of course.
This is the watch channel I always come back to. Modern classic 🖒🖒
Great intro. Did not know know the history of the this citizen with the Italian navy. Another great review. Cheers, TGV
+Calvin Tan Thank you Calvin, I must admit, it was new to me too!
Best regards,
TGV
Thanks for giving Citizen some love. I live near the Citizen facility in California, and they have amazing sales every year, so I own a bunch of them!
finally a citiizen promaster...........love those military watches marathon, glycine, etc i love citizens i think i've said that before personally i think the promaster definitely gives an skx a run for its but both great
+Brian McCann Thank you Brian, military watches certainly make for good watches.

Killer intro and clip TGV !
FYI I've managed to purchase
2 of these divers since watching
your reviews.
A blue and a black version.
They're both keeping time within
+4 to 5 sec/day !!
I also flip the watch around so my right
hand adjusts the crown easily.
Keep up the great work and
Thank you \m/
How about a rubber nato
Governor,
Very interesting to have the SKX confronted to its peers. Good unbiased comparison. I look forward to the duel video.

+Jean-René Boutin Thank you JRB! :D

+Georgi Ivanov Thank you Georgi, distinctive is the perfect word for it.
Best regards,
TGV
I love the intros and how they're unique to every video. This one just blew me away. Absolutely excellent!
Those applied indices are awesome.
Garry Perkins makes it look more expensive.
I have 2 blue faced ny0040 and they are an eye grabbing diver more so than my skx009
really great value
i think, since the promaster has been updated (serial-no now starts with R instead S) and skx-prices have risen, it is the better choice and you get a screw-down-crown and hacking. still one of the best channels. best regards from germany
Just seen one at nearly £4k in the states. Choke 😤
It's amazing how this video came out right before I was searching information on the watch I was gifted 5 years ago. So proud of it now!
So glad to hear! Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Now THAT was an intro.... Loved the review, thanks TGV great vid as always!
How is the crystal holding up friend? And how is the power reserve aging?
@@Dilshan_Kasun it's still pristine.
@@salty_terminal_civilian5374 thankyou very much friend.I'm going to buy this.Very exited to use it for many more years to come

Hi, TGV. I've been following your channel for the past few months and glad to see your thoughts today on this Citizen diver.
I've had the lume dial version of this watch for about half a year and love it. I can't wait to see the duel with the SKX.
+Makki Esteban Thank you Makki! Sorry it took so long.

On my birthday wishlist
The Italian Navy is much vaunted, I have two of these, one black dial, one with a really bright green dial, witch is still unboxed. Presumably divers swim underwater , forwards, therefore it makes perfect sense to place the crown away from the slip stream. Its a masterpiece !
Man your intros are always spot on
Hi TGV - Thanks for the Citizen Presentation. I've not considered a Citizen before but was impressed with its features. Also, really liked the intro action. Cheers!
+John Viano Thank you John :D

Cheers from 2024. I just picked up 2 of these. One new and one vintage. The vintage has the 8202. I love the left side crown. But I do rotate the watch upside down to operate it lol. Great video - thank you.
I found the blue version you have mentioned and purchased it a few seconds ago. Brand new from Germany.
Good evening,
It's always a real pleasure to watch your videos and to listen to you (and it's easy - I'm french-)! They are very professional and your opinions look like a reference. Please, cary on your so nice videos about watches, all watches ! Regards from FRANCE.
Of course the added Kudos of being issued to the Marina Militare gives it extra gravitas. Because of your video...I,m now wearing the fully lumed dial version on a Zulu.....Peace and Porridge ;)
no evidence for this fact - Marina Militare!
Great review, I had no idea about the Italian military history. And testing to 500m, awesome!! I love mine. Have a good one:-)
+Aron Dunlap Thank you Aron! I am sure you will be even more proud to wear yours now, I must admit, I feel rather late to the party on this one, LOVE IT!

+Shawn T Thank you Shawn!

That's one hell of an intro! Well done bro. I really like this watch but, too bad it's not a bit bigger.
+XKCommander Thank you my friend.

Wow! Fantastic intro! Luv it. Never know this citizen diver, very interesting. Thanks for reviewing it, will certainly check it out in details. Great vid!

I just got the Citizen promaster ecodrive BN4044-15E and i love it! - this will be my EDC watch now! thanks for the video - greets, Levi
I still love this watch...I got the rare and quite beautiful navy colored face. As I'm left handed and wear my watches on my right wrist (ala Steve Mcqueen) I have to say the crown location is a dream come true for me. Great review of a great watch!
Tristano, this is such a cool review of this great watch! I always was thinking about of buying it. I did and it was the right decision. best wishes, Michael Lima (from Facebook Urban Gentry member)
Watch novice here, but after watching a lot of your videos I'm in love with the Citizen Promaster Full Lume - NY0040-09W... I see them being sold here and there, but I'm unsure about the right place to buy this beautiful timepiece, can anyone help point me in the right direction?... Is it ok to buy it from anywhere, or are there things I need to look out for?
love the intro. Looking forward to seeing the actual duell between this one and the SKX

I follow your channel for a while now. I been seeking for reviews of the 2016 version of this watch before I buy it. I never saw you reviewing a citizen before so i wasn't hoping for this review. I bought the watch this morning (bn0150-28e) and I'm loving it. And them you posted a vry positive review of its predecessor, what a coincidence. Anyway I hope you review the 2016 one. NOW the promaster is the king of this price range, because SKX has left the place ;)
Thanks for your information, I have one, and I'm very happy to be the owner of this very good watch.
Before I bought my skx I of course considered the citizen. And i think it technically gives more for the money. But i picked the Seiko not only because i liked the more simplistic styling, but the brand has such a rich history in dive watches i knew i could trust the skx to last forever.
Then you missed out,I have both and the citizen SMOKES the skx
Having subscribed and watched a few of your videos as a newcomer to all things Horology; I took the plunge (no pun intended) and after a lot of searching I finally got my hands on one in the UK! I love this watch! Stick it on a NATO strap and its really comfy. For a £150 automatic its really reliable. Mine's gaining about 1 second a day.
So glad to hear! Fantastic. Thank you for sharing that and welcome aboard! Best regards, TGV
Try it on a tropic rubber!
Seems very nice , and affordable price can't beat it like you said . And the crow spot very different!! Great videos as always !!!

Hey TGV, I finally found one. It's new, and it's blue, and it was only $166.00 USD. And no chapter ring misalignment like the Seiko!

Best regards,
Fabio.
Yeah, those who know?pick the citizen,it's not all about fame,it's about quality, and the citizen beats the skx hands down for that
I don't own a Citizen, but I'd like one of these.
Best watch specific intro thus far, bravo!
