How to Paint LIGHT in a SEASCAPE

  • In this video I will show you how you can create of light in a seascape painting. This painting is inspired by a place called Owhiro Bay on the coast of Wellington in New Zealand. The beach is south facing and as it is in the southern hemisphere the sun shines from the north and directly onto the breaking waves.
    Breaking waves are easier to paint when they are backlit but they can still look great in paintings even when the sun is shining on them. In this painting I have used a spotlight effect to emphasise the breaking wave. The foreground is in a half shadow from a cloud. The cliffs in the mid ground are also light with part shade. This also adds interest to the painting.
    I have painted this art work in oils but you can also use acrylics as well.
    The colours I used in this painting are listed below:
    Titanium white
    Burnt sienna
    Yellow oxide (you can also use yellow ochre instead)
    Quinacridone magenta
    Ultramarine blue
    Cobalt teal
    Phthalo green
    Check out the written notes that accompany this video. Please feel free to use the reference photos if you would like to have a go at painting this.

    Hi Sam, a couple of things can you give me a tip on light coming through from the back of the wave and I have read somewhere not sure where that if you let your painting dry then add more to it should use gesso in that area before adding as this will stop the paint cracking later on is this true Thanks again pick up a lot of helpful point in your Videos All the best...Ned

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Neville. I have not heard of this. I used pre-primed linen so no need to add more gesso. I also heard from other artists that too much gesso draws the paint into it making covering the canvas more difficult. To avoid cracking remember the fat on lean principle, thin layers first then thicker layers of paint on top 😊

    • @41Ned
      @41Ned 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamuelEarpArtist Thanks Sam for this Information. Glad I asked , All the best...

  • @2sam16
    @2sam16 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Do you add anything to the paint on consequent layers thinking about the fat over lean rule

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always think about the fat over lean rule and I usually apply thicker paint with less medium mixed in the more layers I add. I also use Liquin impasto for the last fine details in my painting 😊

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tutorial, Sam.Look you paint so easily. I still stuck on the block in step with a lot of wrong value. Did you change the studio? I remember there is a black background behind

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Remember you'll find your darkest darks and lightest lights in the foreground, wheres in the background of a landscape darks are not so dark and lights are not so light. Just repaint the shadow areas until you get the correct value and work from there 😊
