    I've often heard people from Europe say that they really appreciate it when you try to speak their language even if your command of said language isn't that great. Being the cynical bastard that I am, I suspect what they really appreciate is the entertainment value of hearing us sound like a bunch of mental patients as we struggle through the language.

    • @Skerdy
      @Skerdy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Uhmm... well, there is entertainment value, sure, but I really love to hear a stranger try to speak to me in my own languange and I try to speak in theirs, so entertainment value shared, let's say.
      What I really cannot stand is people that don't know a fucking word, understand that no one comprehends them, and raise their voice, as if the issue was the fucking volume!
      Fuck off back to your country!

      I've met a few people from France over the years and they were pretty polite to me and they were visiting my area and came into the grocery store I work at and although fairly fluent in English they were impressed with my French speaking and told me I speak it well but my accent is a little too strong. My store manager and supervisor were impressed too but a checker got mad at me and said "This is America Dan! Speak English!!!" I said "Fermez la bouche!" to her and immediately she shut up. Checker was not a supervisor just a regular co worker. After the French family thanked me for my help and impressed with my ability to speak French the checker scowled at me the rest of the day and a co worker asked me what I said to her in French and I said "Fermez la bouche." means shut your mouth and he couldn't stop laughing the rest of the day. I took French for a few years and although I can read, write and speak it fluently I have forgotten some of it over the years but when I watch this movie or any movie in French dialogue and subtitles, read a book in French, visit Canada or meet tourists from France it all comes back but I have to be careful when I speak French in Canada because the dialect in Canada is different than France as well as Belgium and in my senior year of high school one of my classmates had an exchange student from Brussels and although she spoke some English she didn't know enough and had a hard time understanding it when we had a couple classes together and I had to translate what our teachers were saying and my classmates in the classes we were in had a hard time understanding me and Charlotte the exchange student and one said "Why are you speaking French? She's from Belgium." and I told them that French is the official language of Belgium and the classmate was impressed with my French as well as the others and teachers we had. Charlotte thought my accent was too strong too but told me I speak French very well and we went to homecoming dance together but she went back to Belgium a few months later because she was afraid to stay the entire year in America and was home sick. I pray she's well and I wonder what she's up to now and if she remembers me. I guess I can check if she's on facebook

They’re only 20% of the Canadian population but they think that they are extra important and special. They come out West here where no one speaks French, and they speak English fairly well. When stationed in Germany I found out Germans really appreciate it when they hear you speaking in German. It shows you understand you're in their country and trying to learn. If you fall apart mentally trying to speak, relax. Most of them know English and will politely guide you along or correct you with a smile. It went from 'another GI' expression to opening up and smiling when they see you are really trying to learn their language. "Vielen, Danke" works wonders as it means "many thanks!" and is more relaxed and informal.
