In real life, the guy who stole the video camera wouldn't have been able to play the tape. An American VHS tape (NTSC format) would not be playable in a European VCR (PAL format).

Clark had a lot of other things on his mind, and that's why he forgot to erase Ellen's bath towel dancing footage. He stupidly gave the guy who was filming footage of the Griswolds the idea to put Ellen's dancing footage on the big screen.
