I have fostered at least 10 Shiba’s and have had three. My last two loved water, were incorrigible rabbit hunters, mischief makers and escape artists with the female of the two the master planner. My current female is a homebody, can’t imagine running out of the house, going swimming, or walking in the rain. She’s all about being a good girl. Each of the dogs I’ve known has had a unique personality.
Woaw that’s impressive! You must have so much knowledge based on your experience. Amazing!! Aoki gets so cozy and comfy at home that getting out for potty is not a priority 😁
Hi...are you in the states? My hubby and I are looking to adopt a Shiba next year (we had just lost our beautiful Lab). Do you have any suggestions on how to find a place that breeds them in a healthy way? Thank you.
I glad to see the harness struggle. Ours loves his walks but when I pull the harness out, he runs the other direction. After about 3 attempts, he goes to the door and waits for me to come and put it on. It's almost like he has to prepare himself to allow me to harness him.
OMG!!! that is exactly how our Hiroyuki is. He was very active when he was a puppy, but once he hit 2 years old, he gradually turned "lazy" and now he is 5. He doesn't even wanna go for walk just like Aoki 😅 We were extremely worried thinking that he might be hurt somewhere or have some sort of medical issues that cause him the way he is, got him all kind of medical attentions but every time the result showed that everything is normal, now knowing that shiba do get this way, I am feeling relieved
Everything you’ve said is so accurate. I have to run around the house to get her to put harness on. I don’t understand…is she afraid of the outside in general?
Don’t think they are afraid of outside but more not fans of the harness and leash… Aoki loves being outside and exploring. Gearing him up is always a chore hahaha
Our Shiba is a dog of routine. I took him for a walk one morning and now at 7AM, Mr Whimper is wanting his walk. And of course there is the struggle to get the harness on him but once it's on, he's into his walk. THE FULL WALK. Lord forbid I cut it short. Then he stops and tries to go back the other direction. Our's doesn't do the Shiba scream which is weird. He will bark though.
I have a 6 month shiba His name is Iroh and that dude is obsessed with other dogs and kids he is raised with our 3 year old daughter. He is very load when we eat if we dont share anything with him, he also is constantly trying to convince our cat to play woyh him
oh that's amazing! I don't have a lot of kids or babies in my entourage and that is a problem :( I wish I did differently and socialized him more with kids but it was though.... you can't really approach strangers and ask them if your dog can play haha!
I have 3 shibas and each one is so very different! They are all pretty lazy but have bursts of energy when hunting lizards or playing. The other thing they have in common is that all 3 like to cover their nose when they sleep either with a blanket, pillow or paw. Personality wise I have a calm stoic one that wants to be near you but not on top of you, a cuddly attention seeking one that does airplane ears and wants to be picked up for belly rubs and the third one likes to scream at the other dogs and boss them around and likes to snuggle on his own terms and will demand pets. I have my hands full with them!
His little toes on the scratchboard!! I've been following you since you only had a couple videos up, and it's been so refreshing to follow you two. I'm picking up my own shibe in a couple weeks, so your videos have been very helpful ☺
We've had 2 Shibas a girl and boy - they are exact opposites. The only thing they have in common is we can walk them off leash. We didn't have to teach the girl who was smarter, but she barks & hated everyone & loved to eat everything and woke us up to eat, super loyal to my husband and follows him everywhere. Koji is silly, playful, loves everyone, cuddles, never barks, and picky eater.
What surprised me most in my Shiba Inu is his trainabilty. He's an excellent workdog. Although I knew Shiba's are clever, I expected their stubbornness to be an obstacle for this. But he loves it. When he was a pup and we would put out his food bowl and fill it, he would take only a few bites and leave the rest out for him to eat during the day (and often enough not finish it completely at all). When I used the kibble from his own bowl as treats for training exercises, he would eat them all. So training and being rewarded for it (in treats and in praise) is what he loves most (and of course, the well rewarded naps afterward). Besides that, mine is very social. He's good with people, other dogs, the cats, the chickens. The only thing he can resist chasing are the rabbits (so he's not allowed near them anymore). He does not like to be alone, and he can be incredibly clingy from time to time. So, an independent dog is also more of a generalization than something that's the case in any Shibu. He is however an outspoken character, which I do think is typical for almost all Shiba's...
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! It's been two months since I've got my little shiba Mochi and he's also suuuper lazy when it comes to go outside, I was so surprised about this! Btw, the idea of using a scratchboard is so smart to sharpen their nails! Do you have a specific material/brand to do it? Thanks so much Anais! :D
Ooouuh that’s a tough one. It really depends on your preference. I do not have a lot of experience with females but from what I have seen, they tend to have a stronger character. More vocal sometimes. But again, it’s a case by case scenarios ;)
Kiyo is similar (doesn't like kids, only eats when he wants to---except for anything with or flavored like Peanut Butter, that he goes for immediately!). Sleeps maybe 12 hours in 24. Loves to go outside anytime but makes it very clear when he's ready to go back inside (ie, on long walks he'll just suddenly turn around and start walking home, pulling leash hard lol). Loves attention and being close.
I don't think Aoki is lazy so much as he likes being near his human mom. When you're at your computer or at home, your Shibas don't want to be some place else. Even though they seem independent to the point of aloofness, in reality Shibas are fairly human-centric, almost needy. Our first Shiba, Rosie, was very chill, except when there were squirrels, voles, etc. She came to work with me for over 10 years and most of the time slept under my desk or on the couch in my office. When we get to the office, Rosie would make the rounds to see everyone and then paddle into my office and sleep. I often worked late but she didn't seem to mind. Rosie passed away five years ago and we now have her nephew, Gus, in our family. He's 4 and male and much more outgoing than his late auntie. We have a large fenced in yard, which Gus will run around but only if one of us is with him. Otherwise, the majority of the time he's on the sofa and if either of us are nearby he'll be on his back expecting a belly rub. I have friends who have a Shiba and a Jack Russell, two high energy dogs that need a lot of activity...they wish they had sleepy dogs instead.
That’s such a sweet story 🥰 thanks for sharing!! A definitely agree on the human-centric aspect especially when these humans are part of their routine/ circle!
@@aokiandanaisMine ate mostly laying as well. I have a theory to that behavior: he eats when I put the bowl under his nose because he gives in for good. Maybe he isn’t hungry, no appetite or he doesn’t like the food. Since my Shiba gets raw food, he eats well and you will be surprised, but he walks to the bowl and doesn’t skip a meal.
Thank you for your video. I honestly thought something was bothering my Shiba Inu, but I guess it is normal behavior. • Absolutely lazy dog. Sleeps most of the day and night (~16 hours). She prefers under the bed or couch • Very picky eater. I cook 93% lean ground beef & eggs, topped with carrots, rice, and small spoon of peanut butter. Still doesn’t eat… shame waste of food. • When curtain is open, she barks at everyone who passes by. LOL • She is very reluctant to walk pass by elementary school with kids in the playground • It is so difficult to put her harness on… I hide the harness in my pocket then corner her in a closed bedroom.
The only way I get my Shiba to eat is a lot of exercise and he will at least eat 1 meal a day around 7ish. He will go on a food strike and throw up bile - so picky.
Aoki is SO similar. I had a struggles with Aoki in terms of food. it was not easy-. Have you tried changing his protein base? some prefer chicken, or duck, turkey? you gave me an idea for a next video :)

You're so welcome! Thanks for sharing. I use a medium grain sand paper sheet. Any which will do and make sure to give treats as your pup scratches ;)
Maybe it’s because he’s neutered. Makes Shiba either skittish or lazy
That’s a possibility! Shiba Inu’s tend to be quite lazy for sure 🫣
I’m about to get a Shiba and would love your opinion on what gender to get. 😊

😂😂😂 hilarious! He’s a night owl?
I have a Shiba named Loki that looks just like Aoki...
🥰🥰🥰
My Shiba Inu is the same when it comes to food! He can go all day without eating if he just doesn't feel like it
I find it so strange! That makes it hard to gage how much food to prep for them 😅 me every morning: so I defrost two or 1 patty… decisions decisions….

Why do you say "extreme fear of children ofcourse"
Aoki is petrified of kids who run and come toward him abruptly! I mentioned it in my previous videos so I might have been referring to that :)
Every Shiba has their own, very distinct personality. They do not fit easily into any general What You Need To Know description.
That’s very true! Somethings they can be so similar and so particular 😅
Our Shiba almost always eat laying 😂 we have to put the food right in front of her nose or she would go the whole day without eating. Can 100% relate.
😂 hilarious
