    A "Leak" book is a very Good Idea.
    Then bring in a leak expert engineer to identify current & potential leak sources; & fix all the leaks once & for all.

    Julie, did you get good copies made of those coronation invitations before having them framed? If some water related catastrophe happens and the originals are destroyed, you’ll be glad for the copies.
    As for placing them n a bathroom, I actually like the idea. Think about it. That room probably has better lighting than most other rooms. They have the tome to see and appreciate the documents.
    We live in my hubby’s childhood home in California. Back in the 70’s, my in-laws had Corrie ten Boom as a house guest for several months. Then my in-laws bought another home nearby where Corrie lived for the rest of her life. She had become a member of the family by love, not blood. She passed away in 1983. The other home was sold, but my MIL decorated the guest washroom with photos of Corrie. I have kept those photos there all of these years, because I love and admire her. I never got to meet her. Hubby used to play chess with her. I met hubby shortly after her passing, but I had read her book, The Hiding Place, and it was one of the few books that made me cry. Over the years I have added to the photos in the washroom. I have added angel decorations. That will be Corrie’s washroom as long as we live there.

      My Mum had several of the books of that lady. I never read them but I once saw her on TV. She said she was on the train to the death camp. They weren't told that but they sort of knew. She was 17 and smartly dressed. The train stopped at a station. It was an unscheduled stop. She pushed the door and it opened so she got off the train and walked smartly to the station exit. A young Nazi soldier was stood there. The outfit she was wearing looked a bit like a nurses dress so she walked past him in a confident manner and went to this house where they hid her. I forget the details but I remember that story she told of her serendipitous escape. How lovely that she became a part of your family.

      I like the large Velcro like ones.... Attach to the thing being hung. Then remove the wall side cover, eyeball location, press, and if it is slightly off, just take it off, and shift it slightly to get it straight on the wall pieces.

    Luke, there are a number of picture hanging tools that allow one to hang the frame on it and then one can push the tool against the wall and it will put a small dimple into the wall that will be the place to put the nail or hook.

    Good job with the picture hanging, Luke. A tip from someone who used to put at least three holes in the wall everytime I hung a frame -- you can adjust the picture height without moving the nail by untwisting the wire in the back to give it as much slack as you need to hang it lower. Good luck with the leaks!

    I think Alberta’s picture is hidden down stairs. I think the invitations look good in that bathroom, would have been better to move the old picture that was there. I think the colour engraving is nicer even in the black frame so they should replace the other one. I so enjoy these vlogs.

  • @JoannaLouise200
    @JoannaLouise200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You may get the protocol police on your trail for displaying documents as highly prestigious as historic royal coronation invitations in your downstairs loo! Equally, Alberta might be happier with her wedding photo in a study or library. I used to be a professional picture framer, and a useful rule of thumb is always to use two picture hooks for any frame over 12ins wide. It is guaranteed to keep the picture perfectly level (barring earthquakes!). I'm surprised the framing shop did not supply you with proper picture hooks as these ensure that the pins (not nails) go into the wall at a slight pointing-down angle ~ a much safer way to secure framed pictures to walls.

    • @blazertundra
      @blazertundra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Picture hooks can cost almost nothing but make life so much easier. Just a little hook with a hole for an angled nail or pin. There are very few wall hangings in my house that don't use them.

    Hi there... 2 things
    1... anything royal related is not the best place in a lou.
    2 ... your other video tour of the old horse stalls to be converted into exhibition space is a great idea ... however maybe rethink the access to a WC right off the kitchen... not the kind odors you want around food. The floor plan still works if you close wall to wc on kitchen side. Love your stories. Georgia in Canada

    WhenI have leaks in my old house (constantly), I use one of those big plastic storage bins, but I place it on a (baking) cooling rack on the floor, so that my oak floors underneath can dry out, too. I set up a fan on low in the room to speed drying. First, of course, move artwork and furniture out of the area until you’re sure the leak is fixed and the area is dry. A leak diary is a good idea.

    In norway we have the tradition to have pictures of the royals on the loo wall, ( outhouses) in the old days they used papers and magazines as loo paper, but they couldnt possibly wipe their behind with Royal portraits, so they pinned them to the wall, so that is how the tradition started.

    If you want to leach more moister from spills and leak invest in a quantity of baking soda and lay on some where the moister has sit. If it is in a carpet or rug cover the sodium bicarbonate with a towel so that people will not spread it all over. Leave it be overnight then vacuum it up and you will find that the moisture has been removed by the suction of the bicarbonate of soda. It will also lift dirt and color.

    Baking soda is a very good tool to absorb moisture. In the days of hand driven lawn mowers in Los Angeles 1960s suburban housing tracts it would remove the odor of petrol that spelt from the tin onto the car carpet. In fact I would later show my parents how you could remove the coloring of coca cola from car upholstery that inevietably the grandkids would spill in granddad's car. I would use the stuff to take up party mishaps of wine and alcohol. I would even use it on spilt liquids on unvarnished floor planking stopping it from warping. Just remember to cover it with toweling so that the grit is not dragged through the house. All you have to do is pour the baking soda onto the area until it dos not draw up more moisture. Then as it dries out you can swee it up and let it dry out for further use or vacuum it up. It helps reduce the bleeding of dyes in rugs that have not been sufficiently washed out before weaving.

    It's wonderful how much you can find on the Internet. I was very disappointed a few years ago when I found my Great Uncle Frank's First World War medals...a week after they had been sold. He was killed in France in 1917.
    Personally I would have hung the pictures differently. I would have a dedicated "history wall" where I'd "gallery hang" interesting items, with each item's backstory. I much prefer things "gallery hung" as people will just glance at a single item, unless it is very special, but en masse several ordeinary items get people pausing to look. I suppose, though, that I "gallery hang" because of the amount of items I have to display on the wall; in my sitting room alone there are 32 at the moment, and 52 on the stairs.
