I'm a S18 owner, and completely agree with this reviews highly critical nature. my wheel arrived with a major manufacturing flaw (the wheel/motor was off center by 3-5mm.) Even after being fixed, it still isn't 100% right, because I think the manufacturing margins are way too high - and the wheel lacks perfect symmetry.
There is a lot of talk about the suspension structure (linkages, bearings, and interior piston), and it appears that this structure doesn't make full use of the shock, and suffers from poor design.
I agree the wheel is easy to overpower - and this gets really sketchy under 50% battery. It is not a wheel to push hard - especially above 25mph.
I also don't like how easy it is to hit the lower pedal parts, and squared off parts on the ground - so much so that I moved the pedals to their highest placement, and added additional padding for better leverage. This put me at a high center of gravity, and more than my other wheels (18xl and MSP), the S18 feels like your way out in front of the wheel while riding (hard to explain), and if you hit sand or loose gravel the s18 has a tendency to twist out from under you, more than my other wheels.
The trolley handle stuff is very well described, and baffling design.
I have had a lot of fun riding this wheel, and it is finding it's place in my small collection of wheels - that being said, I will never buy a first generation KS wheel again.

I've only heard glowing reactions to this wheel. Now this review changes everything. Even before this review, I'd become cynical of EUC reviews in general, feeling that the reviewers were placating the manufacturer and not being honest possibly because of kickbacks or some perk. Flaws are always glossed over or omitted altogether. Nice to see some honestly. Did something change? From now on I won't buy a wheel until the general public has them in hand and can give honest feedback.

Much respect for being honest Adam. This review might hurt King Song and some King Song fans, but it benefits the entire EUC community as a whole. Thanks to people like you the bar has been raised; companies can't be releasing wheels with so many issues in 2020. The review itself was very detailed and very funny. You should cheer up now that it's over - you sounded so sad and disappointed. For you to heal up physically, and mentally, I prescribe: two advil, some sleep, some rest, some relaxation, and as much time as possible on the V11.

  • @aa.delite
    @aa.delite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

You may knock the block out, but your bearings are dead anyway from the box because you're as fool as me to preorder Kingsong wheel. You should disassemble it and change all the bearings if you want really smooth suspension. Throw away that spring washers that damaged bearings and change it to simple washers. Use 10*12*0.2 (or 10*14, or 10*16) washers between double bearings when pressing in. Next buyers should receive a good assembled wheel with some parts physically changed. But those who preorded the wheel... pwned. We have bought alpha version. Not a beta testers, but alpha.

Sorry about the broken hand. I hope you have a speedy recovery!
Thanks for the honest review! When the S18 was first announced I was enamored by the looks and didn't like the V11. Fortunately I never put a pre-order on the S18. I was on the group ride when Alien Rides had a bunch of riders try the S18. Everyone hated the wheel and there were many experienced riders that tried it. We even took it on our 25 mile group ride and it couldn't finish the ride due to lack of range. The crazy hills don't help the S18 but none of the Gotways (Nikola, MSX, Monster, etc.) had any problem and they were going very fast the entire time. I was extremely worried about the battery sag on the S18 with that motor and small pack. You clearly showed that is a problem and that can't be easily fixed. I don't know why more people are not highlighting that major flaw.
I know a few people now with the V11 and they absolutely love that wheel. I just picked up a Nikola 100v so I will need to wait a bit for my next wheel. I want to see how the Gotway EX does before making my choice for a suspension wheel. For now, my next wheel would be a V11 or a Veteran Sherman. There is no chance I would consider the current S18.

Wow pure Wrong Way! high quality review just bravo. All this 30 min review be simplified to:
S18 is medium power suspension wheel what feel best in city and not dirty offroad situation.
This product is propably best for "Casual" riders what can benefit from S18/battery/speed/power compromises who no want 18L because S18 is reskined 18L with suspension.
And only thing what make people compare to MSS MSP Nikola Pro V11 Gotway Monster(or just say power wheels) is actual S18 price not parameters at all.
I can imagine if i am under 90Kg person and happy with 40-50 km range 43km/h safe speed my preference is comfort and realy unique look (subjective) and have unlimited money S18 is good choice this is what i feel from you review and this is good job make by you.

Thanks for this safety testing @WrongWay 🙏👍👍
This beep friendly wheel should definitely, before letting you accelerating to near faceplant:
    - beep at you on time! This is what beeps are meant for, to let you know to ease off. It beeped then cut off Bluetooth right away.
    - keep a power reserve to give you a hard tiltback to force you to decelerate anyway.
Instead, this wheel lets the voltage sag down to oblivion, things like Bluetooth that costs only a few milliamps and allows to diagnose crashes get shut off.
Okay you were using third party pads with more leverage than stock but that's no excuse.
Although you and the wheel managed to recover from the precarious situation, Kingsong messed up the safety implementation here badly indeed.
The S18 is an unsafe wheel until this fault is reworked, fully agree.

@@stewartciesla8142 There are way to many problems with the S18. I'm sorry you bought it and feel the need to defend it. So far it's cutouts from over acceleration, motor wire rubbing, pedal clips breaking, suspension bars rubbing, etc... I know there are others I'm missing. It's good in theory but they failed the execution. I'm sure future versions will be better. We do need beta testers, so I thank you for that. my KS S18 has found it's place in my collection - it is my night rider. If I have to be somewhere, run a chore, like getting some food at night, the S18 has become my go to wheel.
the one thing I do disagree with this review is regarding the S18 headlight, which is super bright and has a nice angle/spread. It may not be the V11 headlight, but it's still quite good (it is my understanding the v11 headlight can actually be too bright looking straight down while riding at night, and the S18 does not have that issue)

Oooook soooo, actually none of this video really surprises me. Why? I've been watching every reviews about the s18 since it's out. We knew quality wasn't the best, the battery is small therefore and it was already proven, accelerating fast wouldn't do. Does it mean that this wheel is unridable a 40/45kmh if you just don't do it MJ style? Can you answer this?
I agree the light is cheap led you find in those Ali express cops like lamp, and this is a bummer, wish all euc's had led+lens! (they don't need to have fans, riding cools it down fine).
Must agree with the handle, it's beautiful I like the fact that it disappears and all but, we need something to grab on, I was planning on hadding a leather handle to the casing (people tune the Sherman for all sort of things, why not the s18 for a handle, both are expensive)
Now agree again there should be more clearance from the mudguard And the casing so swapping tires can be done more about the kind of surface you're willing to ride on.
Agree too on the combo low battery/high power motor, it must be rethinked. But s18 handled climbing very wheel and jumping to and i think it's due to it's powerful motor, so maybe change the algorithme and make it more smooth accelerating like the v11 and less aggressive
So now, s18 is THE FIRST wheel to propose something like that, and i mean: suspension centered design (others chose to go with pogo sticks and I'm sorry but I'd rather have a non suspension wheel off road than that type of suspension there... Too dangerous), therefore you have to cut battery, you have to think of a way of attaching all the parts together at least for now (that's not just 2 shits of plastic left and right, screw in the middle there you have it). We must now consider this, the euc world is still young, small, and to advance you need money. I'm happy that kingsong took the bet, why? Because this is the way suspension wheels should be done in the future, this is the first one, no one has ever done that before, so yes it's imperfect. It could be cheaper and they could have continued developing but, companies need found and that's a fact. S18 is 2300€ here, it's expensive, but it's investment in the future, they would find something in the middle, 1700 I think is a tad low, maybe 1850/1900 max. They already changed a loooooot a things and they continue too, that's a good sign, but first is money and I don't think telling people that wheel is SHIT is gonna help KS and that wheel become the standard, it will make it disappear, next time we will be going extreme city freestyle and off road on pogo stick bouncing around and all, breaking our bones.
This is new, it can't be perfect, probably be more battery, better system in the futur, either you pay and collaborate to that or you don't and take your money to conventional wheels, it's up to you. But never forget this, on a small market like euc's, you need founds to advance. Taking that kind of bet was hard I think for KS, it's a big risk. Ninebot, gotway, inmotion they all have big backgrounds and other activities yet they couldn't dare do something like that, they saw money for supplier but not that much innovative device. OK
Now I need a wheel that can take me to work 50km a day, take some stairs, jump up some things easily, and ride it's ass off on the week end in the forests I have in here with 10 to 30 degree long climbs, s18 is great for all that and I won't forget. This is not a wheel for speed demons.
I have juste one question. If the battery has so much sag, how come it handles so fine on choochtech videos? He's not doing 15mph, and going all around, so I wonder. Leaning like GWs no bainers is bad on that wheel other than that it's fine and it will be better, if it's profitable. If not it will simply disappear, that would be a shame.
Thank you Adam for pointing all this ( that I already knew), and I do hope that the review will be a review since you already pointed every possible bad things in here. Also remember that one cannot fit all, and i hope KS will make something of this review, like they always do

Beeping is caused by KS firmware that confirms EVERY command sent to it from app. So every time EUC World connects to a KS wheel, it needs to read some important data and sends few commands to the wheel. Each command is acknowledged by the wheel with a beep. And if your phone will lose connection, after regaining connection this will be repeated. It's not a problem with EUC World, it's an annoying feature of KS wheels and happens with all apps. I asked Jack from King Song to remove beeps in next firmware updates, but... as we know, King Song - to put it mildly - does not always respond to user requests.

Almost a year and a half since this review was done. I know several people who own an S18, just like me. These pointed "defects" have not been confirmed in general. The handle is a very good solution as, built-in, it does not suffer damage when the EUC is dropped. Water resistance is sufficient. The fairing proved to be resistant to the heaviest use. The suspension is praised (and copied by another brand!). The apparent power cord, as far as I know, has never had any problems. It seems to me that the analysis failed. EUC users need to keep in mind that each model is preferably indicated for a type of riding. No one who cares about their knees will practice jumping with a Monster Pro, just as anyone who wants to travel long distances will choose an S18.

Very good video 👌 the plastic looks very cheap when you get up close, perhaps they spent all their budget on the mechanical aspect and then the rest was quick and dirty just to get it finished. They shouldn't rely so much on glue and sticky tape for something that is constantly exposed to the elements.

I'll give you an example: 16X still collects dust inside the rear wing and, although they've been told that countless times, they haven't changed anything so far. NOTHING! One Wheel Man, this is a trail and short distance wheel. I wouldn’t buy this wheel as my only wheel. This thing is made for the trails and occasional street riding. I think any other wheel comes close in that aspect. I don't see why this wheel is less safe in its environment than any other wheel. Like I said, if I could only afford one wheel, the V11 would be it. As an owner of MSX 100V, the V11 isn’t really filling any gap, besides the ability to ride at night.

From now on I don't buy any wheels, especially from KingSong, until I see enough reviews, especially from users who do detailed reviews, with good and bad things, presented in detail as in this video. Thank you Adam!
Kuji's reviews are beautiful but not detailed enough, the flaws are not highlighted as they should be, as they are in this video, they are minimized. At Kuji, I didn't really see real reviews like the ones made by Adam. Kuji only receives pre-production models and if it finds a defect the excuse is that "it is a pre-production model and they will PROBABLY fix it". Bullshit!
KingSong, from year to year, places more and more emphasis on quantity and not on quality.
I see more and more positive opinions about V11, many users amazed by the quality of the finishes (Wrong Way, we are waiting for a sincere opinion about V11 as you did with S18).
I hope that at the moment, KingSong will wake up (LOL, low chances) and promise full support for any reseller and customer at least a year from now.
Not King(LOCK)Song dictates the market but customers dictate because they have the money in their pocket, money with which King(LOCK)Song is helped not to go bankrupt.
And another great truth told by Adam: the wheel is overpriced!
Please excuse me, English is not my native language.

Clearly, not sponsored by Kingsong. Thanks! Also, good information about voltage sag. I'm aware of what that is, but hadn't really thought of it in relation to EUC safety. I think I experienced a cutout once on my KS16S when going fast through a pothole. It was not an easy fall.

3:40 This is BIGGEST issue with high performance EUC's right now. The BMS doesn't communicate very much with the main board, all it sees is pack voltage. so the main board has no idea the BMS is about to cut power because the voltage is sagging too much and one cell drops below a limit. i wont buy one until theres more a more intelligent BMS, there should never be cutouts when its being ridden. its just stupid.

This happens with the Z10, also and probably every EUC, but I estimate my speed was over 55 kph, which is close to 40% above the rated max speed of 40 kph so I’m not surprised that the current was more than the system could support and it momentarily cut out.
That’s way better than burning out something and having unrecoverable complete power loss.

Still contemplating getting this wheel. I'm 270lbs (122.5kg).
Battery cut out is an issue- but I'm no hard, fast rider. I never had a problem on a V10F (980wh, 130 less than S18).
I've even pushed a long line of shopping carts with the V10F.
And Kuji Rolls hard charged like a maniac with no problems in the S18.
So maybe it was just a glitchy wheel.
Besides,KS sells an external 780wh battery-u can charge while u ride!
    Decisions, decisions....🤦🏾‍♂

Hopefully kingsong will improve the battery, the risk of cut out at high speed is too high

If you want a high speed wheel go buy a 100v wheel. The S18
