Ethereal Explorations with the Meris Mercury7

  • Some OGs may remember that back in 2020, I was lucky enough to win a giveaway that ‪@MerisUs‬ ran-I got to pick any one of their pedals, and being heavily into ambient music at the time, the Mercury7 was a no-brainer. And while many pedals have come and gone since then, it has stayed in my collection and sees plenty of use even if it's not on camera here-to date, it's still my favorite reverb that I've played.
    This one's not a "proper" demo, nor is it sponsored-I just genuinely love this pedal and thought I'd share some off-the-cuff meandering with some pretty loops and cool pairings.

    Side note-bit of a deviation from the normal format here. As much as I love writing intro songs and doing more deep-dive stuff, it's all quite time-consuming and I've been wanting to do something a bit more quick 'n' dirty. So, consider this a trial run I guess? 🤷🏻‍♂

      This might be an unpopular opinion but honestly for reverb or just some pedals that have been around a while I think this is a better format. I'm not someone that is going to be using just reverb on its' own so hearing it in lots of different contexts really helps, and when there are a lot of demos already explaining all the controls and how a pedal works out there it is nice to just see how it reacts to other pedals.

      @@lgrcallum thanks for sharing this! 100% agree-I've come to pretty much the same conclusion since posting this, so it's great to hear that affirmed. Both on the idea of rehashing basic explainers for older stuff, and the idea that some gear is just better presented (and digested) in more of a bullet point/highlight reel kind of approach. Definitely going to develop and incorporate more of this format into my work going forward.

    Some great tones and effects on this. Given the name of the channel, I'd like to hear more ambient effects! 😉

      @@ambienttrash5234 agreed! If I need a subtle plate or ambient verb though it’s almost always my choice. I’ve never messed with the auto swells too much though, I’ll have to dive into that a little more now after watching your section on it.

    This is a great format - you should keep it up! I have the M7 and it was cool to hear your favorite settings/take on it. This new format could be done with any pedal too. Not just the latest releases as demos typically go. For example, I'd love to see this type of video for the Boss BF-2. Nice work!

    • @ambienttrash5234
      @ambienttrash5234  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Definitely also thinking about what everyone enjoys so that's really great to hear from the regulars here. And yeah I think this is would be a good approach to things that have been already been covered pretty extensively, where it's not really necessary to do a rundown of the basics. Haven't pulled out the BF-2 in a minute either so maybe that's one to put on the list haha

    Cool as always :)
    I have a meris mercury 7 too and have two questions. I would be glad if you could help me:
    1) How did you set the alt for sound 1? I have tried to set this "choral singing" sound many times, but have only accidentally done it 2 times.
    2) I like the Mercury 7 sound, but its shimmering... Oh, it makes my ears bleed. But yours sounds good. What's the secret? Pitch mix/low/high settings?

    • @ambienttrash5234
      @ambienttrash5234  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yo, thank you as always! So for the settings on that first sound, I think the key things are 1) max pre-delay via the Decay alt control, 2) probably max Density via the Lo Freq alt (can't remember, sorry), and 3) pretty slow modulation speed via Modulation alt. I'd also play with the Lo/Hi Freq controls especially if you're working with really long decay.
      As for the shimmer haha-I know a lot of folks don't like it and it's definitely a very specific sound. But yeah, dialing the pitch mix lower (somewhere a little below noon for me) and then dampening the highs a bit can really smooth it out so it's not overbearing. Hope that all helps!

    Does M7 shoegaze? We heard a bit of it at the end. Btw can any reverb shoegaze - does it matter how hifi or lofi the reverb was made to be?

    • @ambienttrash5234
      @ambienttrash5234  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah, pretty much any reverb can shoegaze if that means just sticking it before dirt/fuzz. Just depends on what you personally want out of it, but I like reasonably long decay, modulation, and tone/EQ control so I can get some decent separation between the dry/wet signals before it hits the dirt. I think the M7 can be great for that, but tbh there’s no need to get something that robust or hifi if you mainly plan to just bury it in dirt.

  • @TheEchomaker
    @TheEchomaker ปีที่แล้ว

    how would you say this compares to the context v2?

    • @ambienttrash5234
      @ambienttrash5234  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have a bit in common but overall I think they're pretty distinct. Context leans a lot more into the '80s rack vibe, kind of deliberately artificial in a good way to me. I like it for things where the reverb itself is a big focus, and tend to go with the M7 for stuff where I want a ton of reverb without it necessarily getting in the way, if that makes sense.
