This is what I love about these older designed engines like this is the fact that someone figured out all of this without a computer I truly believe people had more intelligence and common sense back in the 70s when this engine was designed than they do now
Video's like these are yet another reason why this channel is far superior to others. A high quality in depth truck maintenance video that most, (if not all), other trucking channels don't show. I don't drive truck nor have anything to do with them and I find this so interesting. Steve, the way you explain things is top notch. Thank you for filming all of this, when you didn't have to! 👍👍 I can't wait until Orwell fires up and blows some more beautiful coal! I'm also anticipating to be on the edge of my seat with my heart pounding out of my chest on part two and three of the boat haul. How many clowns are we going to count doing stupid sh*t on those videos trying to 1up the pilot escorts and an oversized load? (my guess is at least 4) (one little, two little, three little 🤡 )
It’s not all driving, sometimes maintenance needs to be done. Especially if you’re finding an issue then go a little deeper and checking out what you have. Well done Steve ✅

You don't need to remove the lower valve cover to adjust the overhead. Unless you want to reseal the base. By removing the lower cover oil will run down the back of the engine or debris can fall in around the push rods if you don't clean it out first. Do not remove the Jacobs Brake went you adjust the valves. Went to a Jacobs Brake factory school in the 80's and we was told to leave them on. Your valve lash will change after you reinstall them. I had a guy argue to me about this. So he adjusted the valves, installed the Jacobs Brake. Rotated the engine and the lash was different. Early 3406 B's had a 346B brake, which was a three point stand set to 0.070. Then Jacobs Brake came out with an upgrade and went to a four point stand. It was called 346B+, (25 more braking HP). The lash changed to 0.080. So your correct lash on the Jacobs Brake with a four point stand, should have been 0.080. I do not adjust the bridges, after they have been originally installed. You can if you like, however you need to know what your valve lash was before you loosen your adjustment screw. By loosening your adjustment screw, you do not know how your valve train is wearing, due to valve recession or a cam/lifter issue. Also on the 346B+ Brake, Jacobs wanted you to shim the brake. So you have your B washer on top of the rocker arm stud. Your A washer is used between the rocker arm an the stud. Install your Brake with the B washer in place. Torque your exhaust side hardware to ten FT LBS. Take a feeler gauge and measure your gap between the B washer and the Jacobs Housing. Jacobs has shim packs and you peel off/separate the shim as needed and mic them. Then remove the Brake and the B washer. Install the shim and then put your B washer on top of the shim. If your gap is out, you could crack your Jacobs Brake Housing. When you install the Jacobs Brake on your engine. You torque the nuts first to sixty FT LBS, torque the 3/8 bolt to 48 FT LBS. Since you have the add on 346B+ Brake, the 7/16 bolt torques to sixty FT LBS. Then your torque the nuts to one hundred FT LBS.
Thank god for true hands on truck shop mechanic work. Will not get much with the new trucks other then use the computer to see what the problem is then go from their taking stuff apart.
Man, you’re old school doing the driving and the maintenance We have to drag out 21 Pete’s down to PACLEASE to service the garbage and fix an exhaust hanger bracket It’s not like the old days when you had to fix your own stuff on the roadside, and try to make it home I go to the Pete plant every day, and I wonder if any of the people that will drive these new trucks can do anything else but put the shifter knob to D and go down the road Btw, WTH is a CB radio? I use a Dial Indicator to do Valve Lash adjustments it's the MOST Accurate way to set the Valve Lash clearances... Different mechanics have different Feeler gauges, feel when setting Valve Lash clearances
Like your channel. We have four older 359s and 97 longhood379 2000 379 watched vid hailing vovlo olwell will still be running your next hauling jobs will be hauling non running vovlos keep up the good content
Hey Steve, since you've done all this with the Jakes themselves, did you also get around to fixing that connection with the throttle to the activation of the brakes or do you still have to turn them off manually?
Hello sir, I have a question!? 3406b what cause the valve to be touching number 5 piston, its either bend the valve, broken valve damage pistons it happens like 3 to 4 weeks after I repair like 3 times since 2024?
I used to service a farm truck with this engine, but it ran ok. The truck only went 300 to 500 miles a year. It probably should have been adjusted at one time I don't know.
I’m Looking at purchasing a cab over What your view of the ride some people say it’s rough being right over the wheels can this be improved with air ride front axle
Personally I don't think they're that bad. Look at a Century Class, Cascadia etc, they are practically cabovers. The front wheel is only about 1 1/2 foot more forward than mine. I believe that in the days of cabover, most were spring ride, thus rough.
Any book you get, Cat dealer, Ebay whatever. Is limited to printing date. Changes have been made on a few items and the book is wrong. Example head bolt torque in the book is incorrect to the latest procedure from Cat.
This SO refreshing to see a "hands on service" that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with electronics.
Yeah, Orwell is kinda like that. Manual.
some would say besides the fuel injection system/ or glow plugs, the computers do nothing but pet the wild creatures called emissions!!

Im learning how to become a diesel mechanic for free😂.
Me too
Awesome timing on this video. I have the head off of a b model right now.
Cat has changed the head torque and if you have a Jacobs Brake read my comments at the top.

This was an excellent informative video Steve thanks a bunch
The best channel about truck transport, Steve greetings from Poland🖐️👍
Steve man one of your best videos in my opinion you broke the truck language down
You inspired me to watch your content... after playing American truck simulator, driving peterbilt 362, love cabovers 😊
Adept ape is a beast when it comes to cat. Been watching him for years even though I don't own a cat
Great video Steve thanks for sharing how to run the overhead on Orwell.
What I love all mechanical 0 electronics
I rebuilt a B CAT and a 3408 was it sure a pleasure along with cold beers and some snacks

Question I have a cat C15 acert. I just installed a new head. And ran my overhead. I can't get the Jake's to work? Any help will be helpful.

Orwell sounds good. It's easy to see why. The boss keeps him in good running condition.
great video very informative
Might consider getting a battery operated (90 degree) socket driver.

Like watching a KT3406E video, I love learning vids.
Orwell has to run like a top after all of this work and fixing the boost leak
Yup. Until the next problem...
So, after your tune up (new inter cooler and adjustments on valve train), did you notice a performance, and/or fuel mileage improvement?
Ah, good ol at home mechanics. Constantly dropping tools in the engine bay. That is me all day long.
Where did you learn all this stuff from Steve. Amazing

Doing an overhead like that quiets them down.

All your torques are a bit off, when using a crows foot it must be 90 degrees to the torque wrench.
Perhaps. But the idea is not to over tighten them. Stretch them and have one break. Had that happen to a 3406E I trusted a CAT tech with once.
