  • This was a 2-day backpacking trip to Spectacle Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. I first came across this lake when I sectioned hiked the PCT a few years ago. I knew then I wanted to come back to spend more than just a couple hours exploring this area . Even just two days to experience the evergreens, wildflowers, flowing rivers and waterfalls, and of course the lakes is enough to refresh the spirit.

Excellent video. Wonderful Composition. I don't mean to presume, but it is inspiring to see other middle-aged men creating hiking films. Sometimes I think that the "Young and Beautiful" have too much of a lock on an avocation that Thoreau and Muir originally made accessible for all of us.

I always thought that was a spectacular looking lake every since the Springs and Harvey Manning introduced it to me in their book. You did a nice job of capturing it and putting it to music. Very enjoyable video - as are all of them you do.

I love your videos. You appear to have moved on from the MLD solomid XL. What are your thoughts. j

I actually still have the Solomid XL. I'm trying out the X-Mid Pro 1 this year to see if it will displace the Solomid. Both are great shelters. The Solomid because of its shape is going to be better in wind/storms. The two separate pieces make it a little more versatile. The Xmid Pro1 has a bit more space inside, is very light and packable. I'm going to put out another video where I go over an updated gear list and the reasons why I'm using a particular pice of gear. Cheers!

How were the bugs? I hiked this in early July and the mosquitos were brutal

They weren't bad at all. There was a pretty good breeze that afternoon at the lake so I'm sure that played a role. I did an overnight in July at another lake (need to edit that video) in the Alpine Lakes and the bugs there were very bad.
