You know what?! Why don't you just say you find the whole game a downgrade, you call everything a downgrade, I like the the game, its both a great game and remake, just stick to the original ,since you praise it soo much, also just cause you find alot stuff in the remake a downgrade doesn't mean others will to, just trying make people hate the game, smdh
Yup! That’s why he asks Leon it, and then Ada. I thought it was really clever. I also like in Luis’s lab, there’s a few packs of cigarettes lying around. Nice attention to detail.
@@Jose-se9pu he does smoke, but the phrase “got a smoke?” “The ones you like” are a code phrase to determine if someone’s an umbrella agent. That’s why he asks Ada and Leon
Regarding Luis's smoke line: A letter that can be found in Luis' lab in the remake reveals that Luis asking people if they have a smoke is actually a code to figure out whether the person he's talking to is working with him or not. If he asks "hey, got a smoke?" and they reply with, "the kind you like", then he knows they're friendly.
This a myth! He doesn't say it for code, he emails Ada and asks her to bring him some smokes when she came to collect the amber sample. It's not code for anything. Stop with the lies!
I absolutely love the tons of world building they did in such surprisingly subtle ways. - Blue light stuns the Plagas --> That's why the merchant has blue lanterns and doesn't get attacked - If you look at a Ganado with the Biosensor scope you can see that the Plaga itself is located in the neck --> That's why a stab to the neck instantly kills any infected - A note mentions that Plagas can even infect birds --> That's why flashbangs kill crows - There are both an old and a new version of Las Plagas, the old one damaging the brain and being the one administered to the villagers and castle inhibitants, the new one being the one given to a few scientists and Krauser. The old versions pop out of every wound (e.g. after blowing off a Ganado's arm) and are the head-exploding variant seen in villagers, soldiers, etc, the new one giving Krauser a bit more control over his transformation. --> This implies that the old Plagas either entirely hollow out their victim and wear it like a skin suit or take over the nervous system with their tentacles, the Plaga's "main body" (the little bug thing in the injections) residing in the neck, which is also why the suits of armor are so wobbly in their movements. Las Plagas try to control the armor like a human skin suit, but they lack any pre existing joints and muscles, so the Plaga has trouble walking and attacking.
The only major thing I disagree with here is krauser, his role in the remake is way more interesting than "triple agent" like in the original, since we already had ada. Here he's Leon's darker reflection. Both of them went through a b.o.w. encounter ending in disaster, while Leon saw the terror of this, krauser saw the absolute power of it all, but this is where he no longer becomes one note. During his boss fight he explicitly says "without power you can't protect anything" not only that he still has all the dog tags of the men he lost in operation javier. While he not might admit outright, he still deeply cared about losing his men, and the betrayal of the u.s government. Also his insistent rookie calling of Leon stops the moment Leon finally deals the killing blow. Almost as if he was imparting a final lesson with his own death. Krauser most likely understood he was wrong in the end. Now you can call all this cliché, but I don't think you could ever call it one note. Especially compared to the original of "all for umbrellas sake" Krauser
Krauser is just pulling a revolver occelot and helping Leon prepare for the battle with saddler, keeping things moving behind the scenes at a pace that gets Leon on the island and thus discovering the parasite so it could be destroyed. He played us like a damn fiddle
Krauser was like the definition of a textbook one-note character in the original, like he literally just shows up, banters with Leon a bit, then dies while the game pretends like there's some deep history between them without actually fleshing any of it out until after the fact with a side-game. He was just a Wesker goon who took the Plaga pill because it would make him stronger, but now he has his own motivations that actually addresses his history with Leon, even if he is copying some of his homework from Vergil.
I am understanding that, like became usual in game discussions, this is one topic about "RE4 versus RE4R" people keep on parroting without thinking about it. Original Krauser was far from being the "definition of a textbook one-note character". And even if he had been that, wtf would be the problem?
Yeah, I have no clue what he's talking about with Krauser, but then again, like 3/4 of the video is, it copied the original, so that was great, this part did not, therefore it was not as good. The nostalgia blindness is really obvious here. He gives us a few points for the remake, but only when the Superiority is so obvious you would have to be insane not to see it (Ashley and Luis).
One big change you don't have context for. The enemies are Spanish, and they now talk like Spaniards. The accents as well as the general manner of talking (use of "vosotros" instead of "ustedes") and the references to Don Quijote and Pulgarcito. I really appreciated this. Big part of the Spanish speaking fan community considered the "bad" accents to be part of the charm, however.
@@redfacegaming7727what? I see this a year later but that's such an odd thing to say. Resident evil 4 was the first one that was a little more corny and 'fun horror', the games before and 7,8 were very much going into the horror.
I think Krauser was actually an improvement. Instead of being just a thug with no agency that was working with Wesker, we now have a character that makes his own decision to join the Los Illuminados because of what he saw during Operation Javier. The fact that he's now Leon's superior instead of comrade in arms was also a nice change. It now gives them a Master & Apprentice connection. And since Krauser is the one who taught Leon, he knows his true potential. With that in mind, it makes their fight in the ruins not only a battle of ideals, Krauser, wanting power for the sake of self preservation, and Leon gaining power for the sake of protecting others., but also almost a final graduation ceremony for Krauser. He dies knowing that he'll live through the lessons Leon carries onward. There's a respect there that we don't typically see with other RE villains.
In the original, Krauser was "just a thug with no agency that was working with Wesker?" You do know that Leon and Krauser backstory was made after RE4, right??? And because of how interesting the original Krauser was, right?
Thank you someone actually realizes. For some reason so many TH-camrs (pretty much only the ones that played the original first) say that krauser is a downgrade and I really REALLY can't boggle how they can say that
@@samueldeandrade8535 Judging from the new timeline and documents in the remake, Operation Javier / Darkside Chronicles will have a new storyline the original RE4 gave no backstory to Krauser and they expected you to just know him and why leon and krauser knew each other. The remake provides you with who he his making you feel like you know his character while also having a reason to go after him. Not to mention they show in the very beginning training with leon. Darkside Chronicles was released 4 years after RE4 was released. And judging from the dialogue and the notes found around the checkpoint we’ll be getting a Darkside Chronicles remake, that’ll probably do better in the story writing and give more backstory between leon and krauser and from the sounds of it we’ll actually see how Leon came to join the President and train with Krauser.
the chad in this game was, whoever keeps spilling yellow paint and tried fixing broken windows w/ yellow tape in the RE series. love how blunt the visual que were.
@@Thatpastaiscold Yeah it's not like they made a mod to remove the yellow paint. Guess you like being treated like an idiot seeing yellow paint to point out where to go? Hold this L for thinking personal preference is a bad thing ;)
@Sir Pants Interactivity indicators have been around for years. From Mario Kart to Asssassin's creed. Didn't know somebody could be so mad about a game telling them handgun ammo might be in a barrel. You may be on the spectrum haha. Another L for you.
There is a mod on PC that replaces the yellow paint on barrels and boxes with the cults insignia. It's a nice way of still being able to see what you can break open for supplies without it being way too obvious. I don't think it removes the yellow paint from stuff like windows and climbing areas though.
The reason Luis brings up smokes so often is because it’s a code word his Umbrella Unit used to see if the other individual was also Umbrella. This is on a note in his lab at the end of the game. That’s why he asks Leon immediately, and also asks Ada
I disagree with some of your issues, mostly with the Krauser changes. The original Krauser felt a bit confused of a villain to me, but the remake really focused in on him being Leon's mentor, and their fight being a test of wills and beliefs. During his fight he keeps taunting you almost like a drill instructor, and his death is almost of a proud teacher. Makes me wonder what was under the plagas' control and what was his own volition.
A real soldier on a Mission wouldn't have a death wish from the start (this isn't The Boss from Snake Eater where something like that made sense).. The original felt exactly as he should be, a hired agent with hidden agenda. The voice and lines are too much of a change in the wrong direction.
@@Big_Dai He doesn't have a death wish? He's a broken man, feeling betrayed and forgotten after he thinks they were sent to their deaths and seeing B.O.Ws
Think they were trying to be metal gear solid without hideo Kojimas ingenuity. His redesign is off to me like Ada and Luis. Luis in the original was a chad that went back to back with Leon. The new one just seems like a sad incel.
@@Big_Dai That's the point OP was talking about. Krauser in the remake is portrayed as Leon's former mentor. Furthermore he's portrayed as a soldier that was scarred and betrayed by his own country on operation Javier. With what happened to him there, you'd think he'd want revenge on the country that he served. And It's fair enough if you don't like the voice and lines, but in the remake, he's portrayed more as a tactical, well-trained, scarred soldier with a thirst for power. They fleshed him out and made him more human as a result, which is a positive.
@@alanlee67 What? Luis in the remake isn't an Incel. He's better here than the original. He still keeps his charm with his "Ladies Man" attitude, while still being the joker between him and Leon. Furthermore, him and Leon go back and forth multiple times in the remake, especially with him as Leon's companion. And let's not forget that they humanized Luis, at least, with him trying to make up for his past mistakes and generally having more depth to his character. It's like his final words "People can change, right?"
Surprisingly, one detail people never pointed out yet is that during ashley's part where she walks along the corridor of taxidermy heads with her blue lamp, and a deer head fell. The blue light and deer head falling from wall was in the RE3.5 footage. Very subtle reference. Hope someone would make a video on it some day.
Bingo. Also, the hallucinations, particularly the scene of carrying Ashley, was a very nice reference to the old build of 4 where leon was constantly hallucinating from infection. Bravo, Capcom. Just surprised that nobody seems to have noticed this when making videos. Just like nobody seems to notice that one of the regeneradore files was a direct reference to a file from RE3 remake
I enjoyed most of the ways they trolled returning players' expectations, like with the dead dog in the opening, or with the thumping sound before you meet Luis. They were lighthearted subversions that punished you for being too confident that you knew what was coming up next, without really hurting you. Though... the broken butterfly thing was pretty mean. XD
I held off on buying the broken butterfly throughout the entire castle because I was confident that I was gonna find a free one despite being bamboozled with the hole in the wall from the original.
@@lewispooper3138 I don't see how that's relevant. The dog that was in the demo is clearly a different wolf not even a dog. If you think they would kill off a beloved animal friend that's well known. They know what kind of backlash you get from that kind of thing, the fact anybody thought it was the same dog at all was because IGN was making shit up again. Capcom would be setting them selves up for a bunch of unhinged twitter and resetera users sending them death threats by killing off THAT dog and we know it and so do they. It's a dumb rumor that spread from naivety. They also cut the cable car section, that doesn't mean Luis from re4 2005 was one of the missing hitchhiker's and died before the game started. That's the kind of logic applied and it makes less than no sense
A cool detail I found out Is where Ashley struggle to not shoot Leon, you can actually see the slide not going back fully after the second shot, thus giving a hint that the gun was jammed
And it's something that can happen in real life when you "limp-wrist" a pistol! If you don't provide enough resistance to the frame of the pistol when it fires, the slide can't cycle back fully, and you can end up with a failure to feed. Edit: or, as appears to happen in the game, it can cause a failure to eject. I need to watch the cutscene again. Leon racks the slide after picking it back up, ejecting either a spent case or an unfired round. I can't remember which.
@@brianwt1 I mean, yes, in the same way that everything happens for plot reasons, but "stove-piping" is actually a common issue for inexperienced shooters.
Speaking as someone who absolutely *adores* the original like so many others, I have to say that the remake is so good in its own right. It takes everything established in the 2005 game and expands upon it in a way that makes the experience feel different yet familiar for newcomers and veterans alike. That's not to say it completely overshadows the original as there are a few key things, namely the radio banter between Leon and the villains and some small gameplay things like the reload animations not being as cool (I know, I'm a wierdo) and a better Ada voice actor that the 2005 game still does better. In conclusion, Resident Evil 4 (2023) is a tremendous accomplishment in filling the shoes of a game as big as the original. While the original still has its place and is still fun to play, the remake has plenty of changes that make it just as, if not more enjoyable experience. This is an instance where I am more than happy to have eaten the crow in regards to my doubts about this game when it was first announced. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Actually I have just stumbled upon a cool animation, when u fully empty the Punisher, Leon twists it by the trigger and rapidly injects another round. That was cool as hell.
Same here. I think it falls in line with RE2R where it doesn't attempt to overshadow the original but instead translate the old game for newer modern audiences to enjoy while also having throwbacks to keep the og fans entertained. It's its own thing and I'm glad it exists.
I'm someone that got into the series with re2r back in 2019 and while I have watched a lot of re4 playthroughs I think i felt like the people playing it for the first time when I played re4r for the first time. I get why the og was special since the first time I watched someone play was one of the most fun playthroughs I've ever seen but playing the remake I finally got it yk? so I think the remake did its job of recapturing the magic imo
15:16 Yes he likes to smoke but it's his code word. He assumed when Leon found him he might be "Ada" or someone with Ada but wanted to be sure/safe. That's why he lets his guard down a bit and is relieved when "Ada"/Ada responds wih the code phrase they discussed in their emails. 21:00 Stuff like that and U3 is likely being saved for Seperate Ways.
Thankfully, in Spain we're still lucky with the dubbing of the games. Leon and Ada still have the same voice actors they've had since Operation Raccoon City and Damnation for Ada, and Degeneration for Leon, and they're still just as great.
One thing I like to do is do playthroughs in the game's different offered languages, and right now the Spanish dubbing is by far my favorite (followed closely by the French one). Even not being a Spanish speaker I was very impressed by the Spanish dubbing!
Ashley’s improvement and just general character acting greatly out ways the other small character downsides. She’s downright cute and the banter between the 2 of them is very charming
I'm kind of on the fence about her voice. Some of it is fine, but sometimes her voice cracks or gives out and it's pretty jarring, like they just used her first take for everything.
I played the game from start to finish and enjoyed it a lot, never got tired of roundhouse kicking the Spanish villagers like the inquisition was lead by Chuck Norris. I know that RE5 isn't a super fan favorite, I'd be down to get a remake of that so we can punch boulders in the RE engine.
Incidentally I'm playing modded RE5 now. It's not a bad game, just a lot more than of an action game than even RE4 was. So it's not that good a resident evil game. Really fun, though.
I'd love a Re5 remake, but like Re4 I don't think it needs one. If they can deliver like this Re4 Remake then I wouldn't mind. If they make it like Re5 beta and early trailers then I'm totally down😂
I do not hate RE 5, and I think it’s pretty good. And if Capcom makes a remake of it - I will be waiting for it. Impressed with what they did with RE4 Remake. And I think the RE5 remake will be much better than original
I think you’re way off base about Krauser. In my opinion having him not being a pawn of Wesker and being completely unrelated to the Wesker/Ada plot line gave him much more character.
I have to again correct the Union VA thing. They're all union actors, Leon's VA is in SAG, Ashley's VA is in SAG, and yes even Lily Gao (Ada) is in SAG. SAG actors can't work in non-unionized projects, that Welcome To Raccoon City movie was a SAG project.
Hold up, you think Krauser actually making decisions for himself and being driven by his past is a character down grade to just being a pawn of a dude you don't even see in this game? I don't think I can agree with that one chief. They put a lot of work into fleshing Krauser out even changing his relationship with Leon to make the confrontations more poignant kinda like naked snake taking on the boss. You also kept referring to him as deranged but like he's the only one of the bosses who keeps control of himself when he transforms, he only goes as far as he thinks he needs to to beat Leon he is extremely in control. I mean to each their own, you can prefer whichever one you like best, but I really don't understand that point in particular.
Krauser’s voice in the original was really great. That knife fight in the first meeting is fantastic. His actual introduction and relationship to Leon is awful in the original. The man just immediately starts spewing exposition and we are not given any idea of who he is and how he knows Leon. He is getting treated like another Ada but we simply did not have any background knowledge or familiarity with him which makes it fall flat. The aspect of playing multiple sides and being unsure with loyalties is done much better by Ada. Umbrella Chronicles does some good in explaining these issues but you shouldn't have to play a side game just to get a basic explanation on who is he. Bad writing is not always meant to be ambiguous. Remake Krauser serves well as a obstacle for Leon to overcome in regards to dealing with the past and trauma.
You might be the only person in the world who misses Mech-Salazar. I remember thinking that was the most ridiculous thing in a game full of ridiculous things.
Just because it’s part of the original doesn’t make it batshit insane, thank god they did those changes while still keeping the length similar to the original
You're playing a video game about parasite cults and a cop who survived a zombie city to only be thrown into the same situation again but with parasites and the only thing you find ridiculous is a statue robot of some midget? 😆
@@pat2430 not the only thing but definitely not suitable for the tone of the remake, the implementation of the robot merged with the clock tower made much more sense
Not gonna lie, part of me wants to see an infinite parry mod, just to see how much stuff a player can parry. I also do love Leon's reaction if Ashley dies. It's not a look of "Oh god,oh f_ck, I killed a kid" , it's more of a "Sh_t, I am definitely getting fired"
The primal knife can be upgraded to be indestructible. Parry away to your heart's content, that's what I'm hoping to do if I can get those last few wind up dolls.
@@apictureoffunction i missed one doll at the end (right before the jetski), because the alarm so fucking loud i can't hear the dolls sound effect. finally got it in my hardcore run
Same. I have no nostalgia for the original though. I played it for the first time about a month ago. I could definitely see my opinion being different if I had grown up playing it. My favorite game ever is MGS3 which came out the same year as RE4... If that game gets a remake I'm sure I would still prefer the original. Nostalgia is a hard factor to get over.
@Typervader's Domain That's not how it works, it's value comes from it being a remake. If it's going to borrow the prestige of its name it's going to be compared, simple as.
@@somedogsarecops2354 no that's fucking stupid. Like the other person said, some comparison is fine. And it's obviously going to come up as it's unavoidable, but a game should still be reviewed on it's own terms. There are people playing this remake who weren't even alive when the original came out and never played it, any half decent review of a remake should fundamentally take into account the fact that a huge portion of the audience knows nothing about the original. If the entirety of your review is based on comparing the remake to the original, then you haven't made a review, you've specifically made a comparison video.
I feel like krauser was still a very deep character through context. I might just not know much about the lore, but I took it as he used to be someone who would die to protect his troops. Then illuminados forced the parasite on him and he just became this corrupted version. When Leon turns back and shakes his head at krausers corpse I take that as Leon asking himself if that's going to happen to him too. Then he shakes his head no reassuring himself.
Yeah in the original they where partners until operation obviar ( I can't spell that word) and krauser would become infected with the Veronica virus, basically if I remember correctly everything in the remake except for krasuer being Leon's mentor figure was in the original and krauser left and joined wesker and wesker sent krauser to get the Las plagas sample for him but saddler made a deal with krauser and krauser kidnapped ashely, now idk if that is what happens in the remake exactly but I feel like it had to since that's how ada got involved in the first place and of course how re4 happened at all
Just so everyone knows, if you hit the lever to release the giant ball and quickly jump down to start the lift, you will take out the first crimson-cloaked zealot immediately!
You said you were disappointed that they took the lava room with the moving dragon heads and the Salazar titan parts completely instead incorporating some of their aspects in the game, but they did …… they merged them just like they did with the recking ball room and with Ashley driving the truck. in the clock tower fight you can see a moving Salazar figure that launches fire at you that way they did exactly what you said you hoped they do 😅 they cut the parts but still incorporated their ideas so we don’t lose them completely
Not sure what i like more, the og or the remake. Both are great in their own right, both are really fun to play. The remake actually scared a few times. The og the has more satisfying gunplay in my opinion. Its hard to say, i love them both.
Man you really were upset about them removing that stupid statue chase. That was the DUMBEST thing in the original. There was something about the original RE4 I never liked and it was how different it felt from the previous entries. I think this remake masterfully balances camp and the dark tone to fit the overall style of RE, and more fitting to RE1 and RE2 remakes (RE3R is a joke, so doesn't count) It finally feels like RE4 belongs in the same universe and despite being heavily action oriented, you cannot deny its dark and horror tones. This actually feels like a horror game, which makes me very happy. Fuck the WS Anderson movie lasers, the dumb statue chase and the silly ass Bowser lava room in the castle. I'm so happy they cut that garbage out.
I played both RE4 and RE4R last month for the first time and I liked the remake a lot more. The original was good too but I prefer the remake. I feel like most people who prefer the original grew up with it and have nostalgia for it.
i would say the lava room and the salazar statue room are sort of in the game but merged into the statue that spits fire in the circular staircase room
I don't have a problem with Luis asking for a smoke...it's a code word he uses to determine if he can trust someone or not, the correct answer being "the kind you like."
I just want Code Veronica remake. Been asking since 2020. After that, continuing with mainline games would be neat. Seeing Chris, Jill, Claire, & Leon after all the Ethan Winters shenanigans.
I agree about the lack of boss transformation but with Krauser this time I have felt empathy with his motivation. Not saying it is right but I understand him. One must have gone through a crazy traumatic experience to go that far. In the original he was just like "oh well, I am gonna be the villain because I am that cool" it only worked in 2000s. And the giant statue... I don't see how it would work well if they kept it lol it's in the same level as Jill holding that large gun to fight the last transformation of Nemesis campy.
OMG hardly agree with the combat. it felt more engaging as facings odds became more claustrophobic, led to ducking, parrying, CQC, and shooting. further along the game became more systematical as you switch between pistol, shotgun, sniper, and explosives as you micromanage incoming enemy varieties as you see fit and utilizing the surrounding comes as leverage.
it felt like so many characterisation went completely off, forget ada being playful and confident and teasing the whole time, forget about her doing everything she can to fight wesker's order to kill leon, and rushing to his side to save him time and time again to save him, revealing her present in the village to save him, got caught at least twice because of saving him, goes out of her way just to check up on him because he was infected, almost got killed for that and still expresses concern for his wellbeing right after that, and ada as who she is, wouldn't outright show her hand and pull a gun on the pilot to change course and reveal her betrayal to wesker, in the original, she sent him the subservient version instead of the dominant, and remained inside as a double agent form the company to spy on wesker, that's who ada is, a spy, a double triple or even Quadruple agent playing all sides, she wouldn't risk her life or her mission except for leon, and that's what makes them special to each other
My dad went bald in 2004 and in 2005 when he played og re4 mendez made him stop wearing hats because he had a beard but thought it looked dumb with no actual hair
38:53 I love that you can see the moment where the gun jams because of Ashley's grip on it. Such a brilliant little detail. It's not a miraculous dud, or someone else intervening in the nick of time. It's the same mechanical failure that millions of shooters have experienced in real life. The same malfunction that Naked Snake pointed out the first time he met Ocelot.
Hey loved the video, glad to see someone really go in-depth about a lot of cut stuff from the original. One thing I noticed was that with Mendez is that they didn't make his eye a key item, I saw lots of people not even pick it up.
@@Stowoney This is how I felt about this review, where he wasn't looking at the game as itself, and how the changes are good for pacing and so on. Frankly it feels like he just hates anything modern
@@typervader Because that's OBJECTIVELY not how this works. If your product is a remake, remaster, or reimaging then it WILL be compared to the original. And, of course, the greater the original product the more the new one will be compared to it. This is true of quite literally everything that's ever been remade that had even a small semblance of a following. Is this remake good? Yes, very much so, which good ol' Boulder clearly illustrated. Were there some highly unnecessary changes or cuts? Yes, which, again, he also illustrated. The more you love something the more critical of it you should be, otherwise you don't actually care about it.
@@loli-knightxardej2252 But you shouldnt ignore the game for itself as well, as plenty of people who playted it havent played the orginal and wouldnt care. You need to get a good mix of comparing it as a remaster, and reviewing it as an indvital game by itself without taking a remaster into account. Boulder failed at the second part and it comes off as whining its not like the orginal for the whole video.
I think the ending was actually a way of avoiding resident evil 5- cutting off Wesker’s opportunity to use the amber could mean we just skip that whole storyline.
I think he is just going to find an alternative way to obtain a Las Plagas control variant. They have images on his screening that are direct references from Re5. The flowers in the mines for example Remake 5 definitely happening lol
Luis only asks about smokes bc it’s 1) a bad habit yes, but 2) it’s noted in a file somewhere that the question is a code. It’s nice how many details they managed to keep and rework to better line up the story from the REMAKE line, and your videos that i’ve been binging have been giving them justice. We all love this franchise and it’s always nice to hear someone else appreciating it too, and bonus if there are jokes or details we’ve never heard before!
Luis mentioning smokes constantly is partially because it's the codephrase he's supposed to use to identify Wesker's agent, so when Leon doesn't reply the way he's supposed to he just asks Leon to untie him instead. He then asks Ada and she responds as she's supposed to telling Luis she's the agent he's supposed to meet. Also one of the QTE failures made it into the remake as a death animation. If you fail the struggle with Krauser in the knife fight it recreates the death from the original if you failed the mash QTE at the end of the fight. Overall I like the tonal change in this game, it feels more in line with the modern games and also helps it stand out from the original. Like seeing an old cheesy horror classic get a surprisingly good modern remake which doesn't replace the original but they compliment each other (e.g original Evil Dead Vs 2013 Evil Dead)
It seems like alot of youtubers that grew up with the orignal have a REALLY strong nostalgia for the original. Is it just me or do they seem to become alot more nitpicky when it comes to this remake? Look I love BOTH games and can't wait to replay both of them once again in the future, but i have to say it really boggles my mind how you think the remake isn't an improvement in almost every way. Especially when you said that krauser is a downgrade for example, i mean it was crystal clear to me (and most people as you can see in the comments) that he had WAY more character than the original, honestly in the original his voice acting was not that intimidating to me and he came off as very grunt-ish, in the remake he actually does add to Leon's character development and has more of an independence. I have so many other things i could refute but this comment is long enough as it is
It was primarily from the segment where you face literal spear chucking, grass skirt wearing tribals. It does seem a bit distasteful, but I think that was more in the execution. We've all seen stuff about the tribal societies who shun the outside world and zealously defend their way of life. It makes sense that such people could be devastated by a disaster like the release of Ourobouros, but there wasn't any set-up for it in the game. One minute you're fighting modern African people, one of them with a very nice pair of sunglasses. Next minute, a technologically superior outsider is utterly demolishing a population of primitive natives. Little insensitive, all things considered.
I'm really loving it so far. I get that most reviewers complained about how long it takes to finish because they have to pump out videos, but damn I'm glad it's a long ride. I can stop playing it at every typewriter and comeback a day later for more fun, and the ride just keeps going effortlessly
@@ablationer optional boss fights? You mean the world, the regenerator and the knight? Cmon bruh regular enemies with double the health. How about the 4 times you have to kill three rats?
Some thing that Nintendo does very well is having distinct art styles in their games. It makes something like needing yellow paint to determine where to go Unnecessary
Hey, the Salazar statue was still in the game. It was just a reinterpretation of a moving animatronic to a stationary animatronic with a moving head that breathes fire
The fact that it breathes fire and turns and follows you as it does, is definitely a nod to the lava room as well. I thought it was a nice way to reference both.
Both are masterpieces. This review was just nitpick central. Which I already know will be the only way the backlash crowd will review the remake. There are legit criticisms of both games. But Capcom did a wonderful job at making the remake stay true to the original but make it work on its own. This is the best game I've played in years. They took my favorite game of all time and made an equally great modern version of it
It wasn't "nitpick central", he said plenty of good things about the game. You just don't like hearing literally any sort of criticism even if they're vastly outweighed by the positives.
Yeah, for real. As a massive bloodborne fan, that track felt like it took inspirations from the same sources! Gives me vibes of those gothic, almost early tim burton era of film type scores and it was fantastic. I will say, I wasn't too surprised by the direction they took with his track though, considering that introduction to RE Village showed just how much the current RE Team seem to be a sucker for that Tim Burton aesthetic. Brilliant track overall! I'm also a bit upset he didn't bring up that many of the tracks (not just the Mendez one) are essentially remixes of their original counterparts. Some were done better than others though, but I think the soundtrack in the castle overall was the best in the game, with the island being the weakest. Then again, can't say I was a big fan of the original Island tracks either - threw the distinct tone RE4 was riding on completely out of the window (other than the Regenerator track, which is absolutely phenomenal)
Someone’s who’s first experience actually playing re4 was with the remake here . I just wanted to say I completely agree with you about the dialogue from bosses during boss fights and I’m surprised no one else is talking about it . Felt like I missed out on some stuff just because o was trying to focus. ESPECIALLY during the Krauser knife fight .their was so much exposition regarding his back story I felt like o had to just run away to listen to .
One correction : Lily Gao herself is a union actor, so does Nick. Its just the usual misinformation Redditor keep doing, and it spread on twitter. Otherwise this video pretty much sum up my thought about the remake. While I do think the OG is a lil bit better and more charming, Im just glad that we got the remake. Im sure this remake will only affect positively moving forward, introducing the series to a lot of new fans too.
15:20 so, the line "you got a smoke" is actually a code to identify ada (or a wesker agent), and the correct answer was "I got, one that you'd like". Because leon answers something else, luis knows he is not the wesker agent, so he says "well, maybe just untie me then"
Regarding the music, iirc TheSpherehunter said in her vid on re4 that the composer deliberately took inspiration from silent hill! Though i don't remember if that was their own choice or something instructed from higher up due to wanting to draw in that crowd
game was fantastic. Most of the stuff they cut had some type of Easter egg or dialogue reference. The gondolas are in the background, etc. Only being able to store certain things was weird.
would be great if ammo can be stored too. definitely useful for second playthrough, especially for getting the minimalist and silent stranger achivements
The truck right before the castle part. It's not coming down towards you anymore, but it's still parked up there, as if to say: "Yeah, we know this goes here, but we couldn't get this sequence in time, so here have this easter egg instead"
This is such a great review. You actually discussed pros and cons of the game instead of showering it with praise. Your bit on the combat system and controls was spot on. Or the overly chatty merchant.
I've played the original probably like 20 times in my life, and honestly I might not ever touch it again after playing this remake. The remake improves upon the original in every single way, Capcom exceeded my expectations. Can't wait to see what they do with a 5 Remake.
RE4 Remake is a fantastic remake but it is by no means a masterpiece. I don't have nostalgia for the original as I only played it for the first time a couple of years ago. The game is great but there's a few things that really keep me from calling it a masterpiece. The movement in this game is god awful. Changing directions has this slow delay and in general it feels as though you have way less control of Leon than in the original with the tank controls. I am not a tank controls guy right, but that shit actually felt great in the original. I wish I could explain better but the movement in the remake just feels sluggish and off. Another problem I have is the inclusion of long ass animations for a bunch of things and taking away control from the player for what may be not be a very long amount of time on paper, but in the perilous situations you're in, it can fuck you up real good sometimes. If anyone bothers to read this, this is where I anticipate hearing the highest praise imaginable, that being the incredibly original and destroy of worlds "skill issue". Idk what to tell you, I don't particularly enjoy being hit and then having this painfully long animation of getting up and that resulting in even more damage. Emo Leon is another thing that bothered me to no end. That beginning sequence with the grueling training and how things "had to be different" made me sigh. Carrying Ashley to the chair with the plaga removal laser thing and Leon mutters "This time it has to be different" had me rolling my fucking eyes, like Leon Scott Kennedy what the actual fuck are you talking about. And all the condor one and baby eagle shit was just 🤢 idk maybe thats just me. Up to now these have been fairly minor complaints yeah? I would agree but they still knock it down from what many people call a masterpiece which is a loaded title anyways. Game is still great mind you but the biggest problem I have with this game is the monetization and the state of the game currently. The monetization of a single player game! I bought RE2 Remake and caught it on sale with all the dlc and it didn't really bother me too much not having played the original and having got it on sale. This time around however my eyes were opened. For starters, mercenaries wasn't included day one and nor was separate ways. This alone worried me but then they said mercenaries would come in a free update, and to that I say well of course it better be free! We get to the promised day and we're missing Ada and Wesker! And a bunch of absolute stooges say, "worry not my brethren! capcom shall update the game later and bring them in a long with separate ways possibly!". And it's just so sad to see people eat the cafeteria slop they are served. Having RE4 as a basically live service game? Absolutely pitiful. To top it all off with that update, there is updated dlc with the dlc being paid for exclusive upgrade tickets... Really?! I mean I suppose it is Capcom but man... And people just eat it up like the good boys there are. I understand that in the current gaming landscape things are never truly complete and that's just a cruel matter of fact we have to suck up and deal with, but the amount of people that can ignore this shit and call it GOTY or masterpiece completely baffles me. In the first place I don't really believe in the idea of a 10/10 or a masterpiece because to say so is the admission that there are little to no flaws in a piece of art and it moves you to such a high degree. The game was fun right. The parry system is fucking great! Crouch feature is also great and I can't wait to see more movement like that in future RE games (although RE6 has already done movement the best imo). Luis is an actual character this time around (still didn't feel a thing when he died though, same as in the original 😁). The flaws stop me from completely being in love with the game. I'd say the game is solid 8/10. Was it better than the original? That's a bit of a black and white statement. Graphically and mechanically for sure! Especially mechanically though. The parry system and dodging with crouch (when that shit works btw) is fantastic. The inclusion of charms and different attache cases is a fine addition as well. Is the remake superior in terms of the story? I'd say in many ways it is, such as with Luis and Ashley, but the trade off with these two is that the villains who were capable of speak fell flat in comparison to the original. Is the Remake superior in terms of sheer influence and innovation? Fat fucking chance, it's a remake for crying out loud! I am not very old and was not even aware of Resident Evil's existence back in 2004 or whenever the original came out, but I can recognize the amount of influence the game had and how unique it was from the competition. The remake is a great product but I don't think it will have the same lifespan or impact on gamers. That's my two cents, anyways.
I've heard a lot of people complain about 1 headshot or 1 kneeshot not staggering but in a game like this where you have so much more control and movement options compared to the original, they needed to beef up the enemies. You can literally walk backwards while shooting enemies and yeah it won't be as accurate as standing still but that's the trade off, and with most pistols at least that won't be an issue. The game would massively suffer if you could stagger every enemy with a single headshot or kneeshot
Krauser feels like a soldier having a really bad PTSD attack, he is sorta comparable to Colonel Kurtz - in aesthetics anyway. I think Krauser is an upgrade
40:21 wouldn't really say saddler was playing sides against each other. Also it's odd you say this krauser is more one note while showing showing scene of him not being one note.
@@RickRossBigBossWhat do you mean stumbles? The only occurence of it that i may think of is when he would get hit by a grenade or dynamite, but i mean what else is supposed to happen in that situation?
"Inconsistency" in staggers for melee attacks is good, because one shot staggers make the game more boring and repetetive where you constantly shoot one enemy, kick him and the entire group of enemies and knife them to dead while they are down. Rinse and repeat. I know it's somewhat of an oversimplification, but it's still a pretty accurate description. This also doesn't cause you to take damage you shouldn't take becasue there is a parry or you can always quickly switch to a shotgun when an enemy gets too close too fast. I don't really understand these complaints.
I finally finished it last night. Mostly really enjoyed it, though it does take some adjusting from the OG mentality. (Can't knife everything, due to durability). Slightly less fun gameplay loop. All that said, the new Krauser was painful to listen to. Maybe it's because I make self-funded indie shorts and thus work with actors myself, but the voice actor was fucking terrible. Sounded like a 15 year old incel on reddit trying to sound tough, as opposed to an actual soldier.
honestly my only complaint is the aim i hate how gigantic the crosshair gets after you fire i wish it was a scalar like first shot is perfect accuracy, second consecutive shot is a bit more and so on or you can pace it to always have good accuracy, the current system just feels like it punishes you for using too much ammo and if you move well better hope youre not using red 9 on anything that isnt shotgun range which is why i stuck with the og pistol throughout all my playthroughs because of the laser sight
Nah, mate. The criticism against the Ada voice actress was not bullying. And she only worsened matters by claiming that any criticism of her was racism. Don't try to softball bullshit.
I actually really liked Ashley a whole lot more in this remake. The original she got on my nerves quite a bit but she is so much more compitent in the remake and less whiney. In my opinion it’s much better company than the original.
Something I absolutely loved about Saddler in the OG is how very different he is compared to other RE villains. Saddler is always calm, the way he speaks and carries his voice. Hell, he never directly insults Leon, hes honestly impressed at his skills. He never once loses his temper or even raises his voice. He does not think himself better then you, merely simply above you. I do like the more religious angle in the remake, however. He is the leader of the cult.
This “review” dosent really seem like a review of the re4 remake as it exists as a game and more of a “comparing everything they’ve changed and not liking it because it’s a change”
@@a.p.5342 You can even do a 1 to 1 remake and people would still complain about it. Original RE4 is a great game but this one is grittier and much more realistic, I loved so much the darker tone that made me feel unconfortable in many situations.
Ah yes because the movement in original RE4 is much better right? Lol some people I swear. Plus the gunplay in this game, not only in the technical sense but also in the feel and strategy of it is far superior than in the og. I absolutely love RE4 but this remake is objectively a masterpiece
I think Wesker's new voice is great. His voice is really similar to Richard Waugh's, who did Code Veronica and RE4 (2005), and the way he delivers the line still has his cruel characteristics from Wesker and not too much super evil like in RE5. The only one I don't like is the new Ada voice acting; she is the most bland, with no characteristics at all. Even though some people may not like Krauser's new voice, he still has his own direction for the character.
This remake is perfect and I wanna say I prefer it over the original and in regards too the gameplay and story events I do but Leon’s comedy being cut almost in half takes a huge hit on the experience for me ,still an excellent game regardless
oh I didn't know Saddler was going on about his backstory during that fight. I just used an upgraded Broken Butterfly with every bullet I saved since getting it and kinda just blew past that fight
BoulderPunch, I'm a bit confused on all these mentions of mods. This game isn't old and I feel you're acting as if mods are the natural experience of the game for all players. They are not and not even available to any player not on PC. So why so many mentions?
Great review! Although we had the exact opposite opinion on the music lol, the new one stands out, shines bright, while the og blends in to the background way too often for my taste.
I couldn't disagree harder on Krauser. Krauser in the original is a weird nonsequiter cartoon villain. He's just a military guy with a vague connection to Leon. He's completely surface level in RE4, and it's hard to call him intriguing when there's nothing to actually delve into. There's nothing wrong with that inherently. I mean, Mendez is pretty one note too and he's just an obstacle. But the game pretends that Krauser is more important than he is and it just feels weird. Krauser's place in the story for the remake is focused, his relationship to Leon is clear, and there's actual motivation for him outside of his vague connection to Wesker. His position as Leon's mentor adds some weight to both the fight and Leon's character growth. This was only vaguely hinted at in the original with Leon keeping his knife. The remake takes that idea even further by letting you actually USE the knife in gameplay. It's simple, but it's the same narrative trick as keeping Marvin's knife for RE4, and everyone loves that. I was really impressed with Krauser in the remake, but even I'll admit that it's because I didn't expect much out of him consider his lackluster presence in the original. Also he's an absolute MONSTER in Mercenaries in both games, so everybody wins.

If you go through most of the lore and notes, in luis’ lab, you find a note that hints that “smokes” are a code word for those working with umbrella
Exactly. Thats why he says it to Ada as well when they meet after the cabin fight
But...he does smoke
That’s why he asks Ada and Leon
one interesting detail is Luis actually got his smoke(the one at his death scene) from Ada, which is a Chinese brand
Such a cool detail!
This a myth! He doesn't say it for code, he emails Ada and asks her to bring him some smokes when she came to collect the amber sample. It's not code for anything. Stop with the lies!
I kinda figured that out without the note. Granted I was high and tossing out dumbass theories left and right.

I absolutely love the tons of world building they did in such surprisingly subtle ways.
- Blue light stuns the Plagas
--> That's why the merchant has blue lanterns and doesn't get attacked
- If you look at a Ganado with the Biosensor scope you can see that the Plaga itself is located in the neck
--> That's why a stab to the neck instantly kills any infected
- A note mentions that Plagas can even infect birds
--> That's why flashbangs kill crows
- There are both an old and a new version of Las Plagas, the old one damaging the brain and being the one administered to the villagers and castle inhibitants, the new one being the one given to a few scientists and Krauser.
Damn look at Vaati Vidya over here. Great comment, loved reading it, they improved on the original in the coolest ways.
But.. almost all these things are details that you understood via gameplay of the original..
@@Big_Dai You never used blue fire in the original

I believe sometimes a stab to the neck doesn't instantly kills any infected ( etc: like when you get grabbed)
OG Krauser wasn't saying rookie either, he called him comrade. Woke krauser sucks 😂
@@therealwewin yeah sure. Keep wearing nostalgia glasses boy.
his newer voice is way better too
Krauser is just pulling a revolver occelot and helping Leon prepare for the battle with saddler, keeping things moving behind the scenes at a pace that gets Leon on the island and thus discovering the parasite so it could be destroyed. He played us like a damn fiddle
@@therealwewin Literally how tf do you get the word Woke from any of this?
Krauser was like the definition of a textbook one-note character in the original, like he literally just shows up, banters with Leon a bit, then dies while the game pretends like there's some deep history between them without actually fleshing any of it out until after the fact with a side-game. He was just a Wesker goon who took the Plaga pill because it would make him stronger, but now he has his own motivations that actually addresses his history with Leon, even if he is copying some of his homework from Vergil.
Which is kind of fitting since original Devil May Cry was a branch off prototype of RE4.
@@Xyler94 And Vergil's model after he takes off the Nelo Angelo mask is Wesker's model they'd built for that prototype.
@synysterdawn8913 wait really? [Idk if you'll see this a year later lmao] I was wondering why Vergil looked.... different
The original fits in line with prior Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil has never been about authenticity. It's been about being a fun horror game.

For some reason so many TH-camrs (pretty much only the ones that played the original first) say that krauser is a downgrade and I really REALLY can't boggle how they can say that
@@And_Hoo_R_U it wasn't a downgrade, at all. But the original Krauser was already great.

A cool detail I found out
Is where Ashley struggle to not shoot Leon, you can actually see the slide not going back fully after the second shot, thus giving a hint that the gun was jammed
@@SeanCMonahanmore than likely it was just plot reasons.

Thats awesome
One thing I like to do is do playthroughs in the game's different offered languages, and right now the Spanish dubbing is by far my favorite (followed closely by the French one). Even not being a Spanish speaker I was very impressed by the Spanish dubbing!
Ashley’s improvement and just general character acting greatly out ways the other small character downsides. She’s downright cute and the banter between the 2 of them is very charming

And I think the RE5 remake will be much better than original
...I actually like RE5 a lot
RE5 and CV need remakes purely because I am a massive fan of Wesker and his goofy lil plot
You're part of the Film Actors Guild
How would you feel if they cut the Boulder Punching from RE5 remake? I think the world would be a little less awesome in my opinion.
It would.
They won't. Chris wouldn't be called a Boulder punching a$$h&le in 8 if they cut that out.
It wouldn't be cut. It's been referenced by Heisenberg in Village, which is substantial for the new RE canon.

Same! Thought that was Leon thinking “ is something like that going to be my fate too” along with just some pity and sadness for his old mentor

So you think the remake's better because it's not a faithful remake?
No wonder you people keep eating modern gaming slop.

OMG hardly agree with the combat. it felt more engaging as facings odds became more claustrophobic, led to ducking, parrying, CQC, and shooting. further along the game became more systematical as you switch between pistol, shotgun, sniper, and explosives as you micromanage incoming enemy varieties as you see fit and utilizing the surrounding comes as leverage.
it felt like so many characterisation went completely off, forget ada being playful and confident and teasing the whole time, forget about her doing everything she can to fight wesker's order to kill leon, and rushing to his side to save him time and time again to save him, revealing her present in the village to save him, got caught at least twice because of saving him, goes out of her way just to check up on him because he was infected, almost got killed for that and still expresses concern for his wellbeing right after that,
and ada as who she is, wouldn't outright show her hand and pull a gun on the pilot to change course and reveal her betrayal to wesker, in the original, she sent him the subservient version instead of the dominant, and remained inside as a double agent form the company to spy on wesker, that's who ada is, a spy, a double triple or even Quadruple agent playing all sides, she wouldn't risk her life or her mission except for leon, and that's what makes them special to each other

I think he is just going to find an alternative way to obtain a Las Plagas control variant. They have images on his screening that are direct references from Re5. The flowers in the mines for example Remake 5 definitely happening lol
In the OG timeline, Wesker visited the island himself and got the sample he needed from Krauser’s corpse, so the same thing might apply in the remakes

There's a mod that does it on PC and it really makes it too easy.
I agree this this review, it's not praising the game as the best ever, but dissecting how it holds to the og and how it stands as it own.
I really miss the scary siren noise that would play every time you would pick up a key item in Re4
"The gameplay doesn't feel as tight as the original"
......
Nostalgia's a helluva drug
Haha yea this guy is delusional
This guy hates most modern games
Absolutely true. Some people are just stuck in the past I guess
it's fine to think that, but he didnt really explain why. His only complaint was the amount of shots required for a stagger i think?
@@RickRossBigBossWhat do you mean stumbles? The only occurence of it that i may think of is when he would get hit by a grenade or dynamite, but i mean what else is supposed to happen in that situation?
so wait....point blank range shotgun blast to the face only leaves scratches on them 19:17 no exploding head physics like in re2 remake?????????
"Inconsistency" in staggers for melee attacks is good, because one shot staggers make the game more boring and repetetive where you constantly shoot one enemy, kick him and the entire group of enemies and knife them to dead while they are down. Rinse and repeat. I know it's somewhat of an oversimplification, but it's still a pretty accurate description. This also doesn't cause you to take damage you shouldn't take becasue there is a parry or you can always quickly switch to a shotgun when an enemy gets too close too fast. I don't really understand these complaints.
Yea it's not about it being inconsistent it's more percentage based giving it more of a risk reward for players.. it's smartly done 👍
@@sikevillain Also he was playing on hardcore and expected it to be easy???
@@typervaderright, I always thought boulder punch was super nitpicky in his reviews sometimes..it kinda throws me off
True, it shouldn't always work the same way. Some villagers should be able to take more punishment than others. Nothing wrong with that design.
@@kristoffer8609 *gives high five 👍
Same here, love the laser sight and it's a real shame only 2 guns can have it :/ crosshairs are so lame and have been done to death.
Needless. Utterly needless. Now can we ask Capcom for a proper remake of 2 like the GameCube got for 1?
If only... we need ai to get good so it can create it for us since capcom clearly dont care for us old fans.
How can you not want a code Veronica remake not wanting that is living in this world wrong
This “review” dosent really seem like a review of the re4 remake as it exists as a game and more of a “comparing everything they’ve changed and not liking it because it’s a change”
Well tbf everything changed in the game is worse except for ashley and leon
@@baddonkeyworld7254false
When you're told you suck at your job like she did it's not bullying, everyone is such a snowflake and can't take criticism
This game is a masterpiece
Careful saying that, you’ll trigger the pathetic and weird purists who cry about a single texture not being the same as the original RE4.
@@a.p.5342 You can even do a 1 to 1 remake and people would still complain about it. Original RE4 is a great game but this one is grittier and much more realistic, I loved so much the darker tone that made me feel unconfortable in many situations.
So is your mom
If the gunplay, mainly the aiming, and movement had no objective flaws, then I'd call it that.
Ah yes because the movement in original RE4 is much better right? Lol some people I swear. Plus the gunplay in this game, not only in the technical sense but also in the feel and strategy of it is far superior than in the og. I absolutely love RE4 but this remake is objectively a masterpiece
My favorite line in the remake is from Ashley when all the knights come after her all at once. "This su-hu-hu-cks!
Wesker's new voice is atrocious in comparison to the original. I cannot possibly fathom why they'd do that.
Wesker old voice broke NDA
I think Wesker's new voice is great. His voice is really similar to Richard Waugh's, who did Code Veronica and RE4 (2005), and the way he delivers the line still has his cruel characteristics from Wesker and not too much super evil like in RE5.
The only one I don't like is the new Ada voice acting; she is the most bland, with no characteristics at all. Even though some people may not like Krauser's new voice, he still has his own direction for the character.
@@anakrad.3966 CHRISSSSSSSS
@@schemar17 that's a crying shame. Loved his voice...
This remake is perfect and I wanna say I prefer it over the original and in regards too the gameplay and story events I do but Leon’s comedy being cut almost in half takes a huge hit on the experience for me ,still an excellent game regardless
As much charme as re4s goofines has, i think the remakes tone fits in way better with the rest of the series
oh I didn't know Saddler was going on about his backstory during that fight. I just used an upgraded Broken Butterfly with every bullet I saved since getting it and kinda just blew past that fight
Yeah or a rocket launcher
BoulderPunch, I'm a bit confused on all these mentions of mods. This game isn't old and I feel you're acting as if mods are the natural experience of the game for all players. They are not and not even available to any player not on PC. So why so many mentions?
Great review! Although we had the exact opposite opinion on the music lol, the new one stands out, shines bright, while the og blends in to the background way too often for my taste.
I'm surprised he didn't even bring up the minecart section music, it was such a banger
