Ringo....nobody can crack a snare like him. And his kit is tuned perfectly and his timing is just phenomenal...NOBODY rocks out in 3/4 or 4/4 time like him....plus he has a great voice and slight vibrato....I could go on and on
Ringo was a fantastic part of those Beatles recordings. I always say he played melodic drums because they were such 'tuneful' rhythmic patterns...he composed 'percussive 'tunes' like no other. The list is so long but Hello, Goodbye and She Said, She Said are two fantastic examples. He added immensely to great compositions.
Like MILLIONS of other 12 year olds, I became a drummer because of Ringo. And still drum to this date...like millions of others! Thank you RINGO for the inspiration and creativity.
So glad I got to see this, absolutely fascinating, Ringo tells the "stories" in a such an interesting way - e.g. without the ego getting in the way. And of course his contribution was special by way of his unique drumming and being as John said "the heart of the Beatles" Full credits to Dave Stewart for a superb presentation too!
Ringo never said a bad word about any of The Beatles as a band or as individuals. ..kind hearted loveable genuine nice guy ....perfect fit for John , Paul & george...still recording awesome albums too....
+Purple Peanuts Whatever one thinks about Pete Best, guess you know this, it was the other three who sacked Pete. THO i would say that Pete Best was treated in a bad way by John, Paul and George. They should have give him some credit. After all. It`s mentioned in The Beatles Anthology. As Ringo says: "Peace and love"
The J, P & G all said that when Ringo came on board is when they became the Beatles. Ringo was the missing link in the sound they were striving for. Pete Best had to go and there is just no nice way to do that sort of thing. It just has to be done. Hurt feelings and all.
You going to catch him this tour (2020 with the all star band) seeing him at the end of this year, (seen Paul several times and he’s not coming near me this tour/hoping he adds a second leg next year) but I haven’t seen ringo since I was a kid (which was amazing), stoked though
Wow that final song was really something. It almost made me shed a tear. Very emotional and I think many can relate to it, be it Liverpool or some other town you grew up in.
When you look at the Beatles from the outside it just seems impossible. But when you hear Ringo speak like this you realize how it could really happen. Still it defies all the odds. Four superstars just happened to grow up together at exactly the right time in musical history. It happened organically.
He stated many times he was not a guitar player but the foundation for the guitars so he keep it simple but as perfect as he could do.... He could only play three cords in those days.
Ringo’s drumming on “In My Life”, “Rain” and “A Day In The Life” are works of genius. Ringo didn’t need to be flashy, because he consistently got it right.
Ringo was and is the best one of the fab four! I think the Beatles were the best band of my youth! I did like other bands but I think that I loved the Beatles the most.

The Roof Top "Concert" really was the Proof in the Pudding of how these 4 guys could come together and play as a unit...the early live shows must have been: "THEY WERE GREAT"!
Great interview. Loved how they touched on George introducing Ringo to the Maharishi...I always thought that Ringo had trouble with the food, wanted to go home, and did in fact leave after just two weeks. But Ringo was a family man with a new baby son...and, more to the point, he stated, "The Maharishi gave me my mantra. You can take my car, you can take my house, but the mantras mine."
Yes Andy, a really funny guy. Dave: "Ringo, why did the Beatles want you?" Ringo: "I was the best drummer in Liverpool". Dave: "John Lennon called you the heartbeat of the Beatles" Ringo: "That's true, I was."
He's forgotten his Liverpool roots. Do you think he'd live there? He scooted off to the US and does not even live in the UK. Another David Bowie. All the tosh about him being a Brixton boy when he died. He would not have been seen dead in Brixton, he wanted nothing to do with England when he got rich and famous.
@@treasurehunteruk9718 nope, nothiung like that happened, whatsoever. Beatles or Bowie. At the time, the Labour government of Great Britian had unbearablly brutal tax laws of 90% to highest earners, then those who had enough left to save or invest fell into the Supertax rate of 95% to 98& and left with virtually nothing...just crazy. It was not a matter of them turning their backs on Liverpool or G.B. The Beatles had six number-one singles in 1964 and earned $25 million that year. After management/legal/travel expenses they each grossed $4 million. Their country took $3,920,000 of that from each of them, leaving them with only $80,000 each of the $4 million they each earned. After travel and living expenses, they barely broke even. This is while in the U.S. bands that had just one top 40 hit would net nearly 10 times more than the biggest band in the world. The Beatles were never even given the chance to make their talent and success pay off in England. England did not revise their brutal tax laws until well after the Beatles had broken up. None of the great British musicians of that era left England for any other reason than they couldn't survive there because of the insane tax penalties they suffered because of their success. Rock stars of the 1960's and 1970's leaving Liverpool / Great Britain was a simple matter of common sense and survival.. Their own country forced it on them by overly penalizing their success.
Your wrong TreasureHunter, besides the brutal tales factores, I think I've never heard a singer/songwriter that refers his hometown in his songs like Ringo! Nice songs, reflections, memories and even the not so nice aspects of the huge port-city of Liverpool like what he told us in 'The other side of Liverpool' from his "Y not" album of 2010. He also has an álbum named after his hometown: "Liverpool 8" (2008).
Ringo is so mature a great sense of humor and such an honest heart. He must be a great Father. I totally enjoyed these few miniutes. So much to learn from a man like him. Peace Ringo!!
This is great! I like how this is focused on the actual music (and not the gossip), and it's great to see Ringo demonstrate behind the kit mid-way through. I also enjoy hearing him talk about how some of his songs were written. The ideal rock drummer, imo.......
We were 16 in the Midlands UK not far from Sheffjeld and Liverpool, just about to leave Hugh School and we lived live bands and the new music. Then along cane the Beatles with that sound and rhthyms that went in our ears and filled ur souls till we felt so alive, really alive!. Paul Mc Cartney ,uses the word magic 'magic' and it still is! Over the past couple of days I've focussed on TH-cam features on Ringo's drumming and re-listening to the music from a different anggle which has given a whole new dimension to my pleasure in Beatles music. Thank you Ringo, you have given me so much over the years, the glue between the words that made the music so strong. LOVE Eunice
Ringo is my favorite drummer of all time and he's a very likable gentle person. He's a good singer and overall musician. He's from my all time favorite band and he's from among the greatest bands in the world 🌎 The Beatles. I love listening 🎧 to his stories about his early life and his life with The Beatles. Hilarious memories of coming up with "back off boogaloo" & "octopuses garden", certainly the best Ringo interview ever, his honesty is what grips you, no hiding behind the typical rockstar persona.
I remember back in 1978 when I was just 10 yrs old and some friends in my neighborhood started a small band and the hippie parents at the cul-de-sac on our street used to call me Ringo because I was the drummer. I didn't even know who he was at that time but once I found out, he was my main influence ever since. Ringo is amazing because he's the only drummer that I learned to not just play rhythm but to also play the beat for the melody of the song and especially for the singer. He may not be the flashiest drummer ever but he is the master of an almost melodic but steady pop groove. I also love the side to side swipe of the high hat like a paint brush strike he used as opposed to the standard strait down bang. It creates a totally different sound a feel to percussion. He's a complete original and all around great guy! Most importantly he taught me that less is actually more. He got more out of a 4 or 5 piece kit than anyone else on the planet. Lastly, if you believe the old rumors about the real Paul McCartney dying in 1966 then Ringo really is the last living Beatle!
Ringo is famous for his unique technique playing the hi hat using a windshield wiper blade motion . many small cars had just one wiper blade mounted in the center of the windshield on a pivot and the blade went from side to side . think of holding a small flag and waving it back and forth thats the motion Ringo uses playing his hi hat . his drumming is as unique as the melodies that George John and Paul created. He certainly was the heart beat of the Beatles. ❤🥁
R I N G O !!! ahh you are amazing ! Great interview DAVE ! and great playing as always .(Unabashed Eurythmics fan 4 life) So kind of you both to let us all into your world and friendship. Please both of you live happily ever after and thank you kindly for what you brought into my life. Namaste
Gah...I just adore Ringo. He's just a genuinely smart creative kind human being. One of the few people on earth that make reality worth it because they exist. I feel the same way about Bjork and a few others. Just those rare creative souls that make my soul smile. :)
Ringo,s drum pattern in Ticket to ride consists of a very fast single stroke roll followed by 3 flams two flams played on his snare drum and flam number 3 played on his high pitched tom tom drum along with a syncopated pattern on his bass drum . Very unique rock drumming in 1965 . Very simple drumming that was perfect for the song . Simplicity is not a negative word it’s often a sign of genius . Think of Einsteins equation that led to atomic energy { e= mc2 } … a simple equation that unleashed immense power .
+Da Critter George was down to earth as well... I could easily hit it off with those 2 like brothers, but it might not be nice to hurt Paul or John's feelings
Loved the interview. Ringo is so self deprecating. He is so matter of fact with the technical side of his music. He clearly talented but makes it sound like he was just messing around. It's coming out why he did things the way he did like being a left handed player on a right handed drum kit for example. His adaptations were intuitive but he did create a special and unique sound.
He's so lovely. I always loved him but I learned so much more about him here. One of the most "grown up" and humble musicians of his time. Highly underrated.
Ringo is so funny I love the Scouser humour I grew up with it as my Dad was raised in Liverpool and all his family shared the same humour and some of them had that accent and they all supported Everton F.C.
Imagine how much fun, what a journey. Stoked to see Ringo live in concert this year. Seen him once before many many years ago and I’ve seen Paul several times, luckily got to see George play with Clapton with my dad in the early 90s on a super rare set of foreign tour dates. Sadly I wasn’t alive yet by the time John was unnecessarily taken from humanity in the most senseless and “why?!” reality maddening manner. It’s still my top achievement in seeing the many great bands and artist I’ve prioritized seeing that in this coming decade (‘20s) it’s going to be weird as this physical plane looses so many legends of the rock era in the 20th century. May we cherish their music love and legacy!
This is one of the best interviews I’ve seen with Ringo. Dave Stewart is a brilliant interviewer and has really put Ringo at ease. Maybe because he looks and sounds a little like Ringo himself!
well we all love Ringo (I mean the good people do and even some of the bad ones do) Myself, in my locality in the uk ive been looking for a fantastic drummer for a long long time now who could do percussion in the same way George Harrison played guitar (That's a tall order), and ive met many fantastic drummers online, but they either do not know how to record themselves in a daw environment, and the ones that do still lack between the raw physical contact that is needed when people are jamming in the same room.(Thats where the magic happens)...Todays date as i write this comment is August 23rd 2023, go back about three months, Im moving out of my old house (That house has a massive musical connection going back in time) as i left that house for the last time and walked out of my front door i was immediacy faced with my old friend spence that id not seen since 2006 when we literally walked/collided into each other (Spence is an old analogue mixing engineer that ive known since 1987) Eventually after the euphoria he takes me to his lady friends house who lives about 12 doors away from me and introduces me to her (Alex) Alex is about 40 years old, partially autistic, Very esoteric, extremely spiritual, constantly looking for answers and has the humility of a child and the energy and passion of a lioness...August 22nd 2023..I ends up moving back into my old house that i spoke about at the start of this comment, so i bangs on alex's door tonight and says, hey im moving back into this street and something about i dont want to explain how that happened right now, A cup of English tea latter and her reading me several of her poems i noticed she had several hand drums in her enchanted living room, I asked, do you play them? she replied yes and grabbed one, then she fired up a backing track that had zero click track and played just one drum like one of the goddesses, I was completely blown away by what she played, it was almost as if she was suspending/freezing time (The gift) I asked her can she play a full drum kit? And her reply basically told me that, yes, and that it as much easier for her to play a full drum kit. Conclusion, she is an artist of the highest order, and im an artist too, she knows nothing about audio engineering and i know just a little and enough to work with her and capture something absolutely magical in the very near future, its the same Equation as the Beatles, inc ringo, its the unknown factor, but once in a lifetime all the right ingredients all fall into place at the right time, myself im now 60 years old, but im not going to let that put me off, Dr. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin quite a few years after he had been put out to pasture by ones who considered him to be to old to add anything meaningful to life's equation, its the same with everything inc music. Hope everyone's doing great around here
he reminds me of Ronnie Woods when asked what it was like to be a Rolling Stone and he said he said he was only standing in for 20 years, but apparently he was in the band.
wow tnc u for sharing this.ringo is truly the best drummer and now their healthiest spoke person. he speaks better unlike paul where his thick english accent is kinda blurry to listen at.
Ringo - you still got it lad! Thanks for the post, I really enjoyed this. I went to a couple of their shows in Leeds and was horrified that all the other girls just sat and screamed; you could hardly hear what they were singing. Shame.
Just came across this wonderful interview with Ringo and Dave Stewart Those were the days !! A wonderful time for music !
I could listen to Ringo telling old stories for hours
Those that he can recall :) There are significant periods he cannot remember a thing, for obvious reasons.
Which is why he was the first narrator of Thomas & Friends.
And hours and hours and hours and hours and hours!!!!!!!!!

As a /beatles fan I think this is the best Ringo interview, ever he come across very well .
Ringo, great person, great attitude, great musician, honest and straight forward.

I loved it..Ringo never let me down
hypnotic
R I N G O !!! ahh you are amazing ! Great interview DAVE ! and great playing as always .(Unabashed Eurythmics fan 4 life) So kind of you both to let us all into your world and friendship. Please both of you live happily ever after and thank you kindly for what you brought into my life. Namaste
This was one hell of an interview. THANK YOU!!!
Gah...I just adore Ringo. He's just a genuinely smart creative kind human being. One of the few people on earth that make reality worth it because they exist. I feel the same way about Bjork and a few others. Just those rare creative souls that make my soul smile. :)
avedic cheeeee
Bjork is a B-jerk.
Yes, indeed, very good interview. Always my favorite Beatle .. probably because of his quirky, often self effacing, sense of humor.
Great analysis, I get really pissed when people say Ringo was a shit drummer, good sign that whoever doesn’t know what they speak of.
thanks for posting this! Ringo has always been my inspiration in the drum beats
Wow, Best Ringo interview ever.,what a gem.
Very nice interview. Thanks so much for posting. Ringo always seems like just a down to earth guy. Rock on... Medicine Man... lol
His adaptations were intuitive but he did create a special and unique sound.
plusfour1 George was a big help in introducing the others to the traditional sounds of India to use on later album(s)
He's great!
He's so lovely. I always loved him but I learned so much more about him here. One of the most "grown up" and humble musicians of his time. Highly underrated.
Dave Stewart is a fantastic interviewer............I wonder if he still does shows like this..
great show,
cheers all,,!!
Ringo is so funny I love the Scouser humour I grew up with it as my Dad was raised in Liverpool and all his family shared the same humour and some of them had that accent and they all supported Everton F.C.
one of the best interview I heard from Ringo Starr. thanks to Dave Stewart and the man himself: the one and only Ringo Starr
Just want to say thanks for the upload - rarely has 50+ minutes gone by so fast!
What a gem
Growing up in english working class towns never leaves you and ringo hit the nail
Beautiful. Thank you
Thanks for posting this :) We don't have HBO in my country so I'm glad I could watch this interview here ^_^
Always my favorite Beatle. Great satirical and observational sense of humor.
Agree, easy fine on the same time,Peace and love.
Rare and unseen
Retro Thingz
Hendrix
Retro Thingz yeah ... My favorite too ... No doubt ... Very real
This is one of the best interviews I’ve seen with Ringo. Dave Stewart is a brilliant interviewer and has really put Ringo at ease. Maybe because he looks and sounds a little like Ringo himself!
Now that was a great interview of a Beatle...
Absolutely loved hearing the story behind Octopus's Garden. Makes me love the song even more!
The photo of Ringo dancing face to face with Elizabeth Taylor, their joyful giddy smiles, priceless!
well we all love Ringo (I mean the good people do and even some of the bad ones do) Myself, in my locality in the uk ive been looking for a fantastic drummer for a long long time now who could do percussion in the same way George Harrison played guitar (That's a tall order), and ive met many fantastic drummers online, but they either do not know how to record themselves in a daw environment, and the ones that do still lack between the raw physical contact that is needed when people are jamming in the same room.(Thats where the magic happens)...Todays date as i write this comment is August 23rd 2023, go back about three months, Im moving out of my old house (That house has a massive musical connection going back in time) as i left that house for the last time and walked out of my front door i was immediacy faced with my old friend spence that id not seen since 2006 when we literally walked/collided into each other (Spence is an old analogue mixing engineer that ive known since 1987) Eventually after the euphoria he takes me to his lady friends house who lives about 12 doors away from me and introduces me to her (Alex) Alex is about 40 years old, partially autistic, Very esoteric, extremely spiritual, constantly looking for answers and has the humility of a child and the energy and passion of a lioness...August 22nd 2023..I ends up moving back into my old house that i spoke about at the start of this comment, so i bangs on alex's door tonight and says, hey im moving back into this street and something about i dont want to explain how that happened right now, A cup of English tea latter and her reading me several of her poems i noticed she had several hand drums in her enchanted living room, I asked, do you play them? she replied yes and grabbed one, then she fired up a backing track that had zero click track and played just one drum like one of the goddesses, I was completely blown away by what she played, it was almost as if she was suspending/freezing time (The gift) I asked her can she play a full drum kit? Hope everyone's doing great around here
he reminds me of Ronnie Woods when asked what it was like to be a Rolling Stone and he said he said he was only standing in for 20 years, but apparently he was in the band.
wow tnc u for sharing this.ringo is truly the best drummer and now their healthiest spoke person. he speaks better unlike paul where his thick english accent is kinda blurry to listen at.
i love watching rngo play the drums and answer interviews. in that order.
That was fantastic! Thanks Ringo! Love you~
Ringo - you still got it lad! Thanks for the post, I really enjoyed this. I went to a couple of their shows in Leeds and was horrified that all the other girls just sat and screamed; you could hardly hear what they were singing. Shame.
I used to cry... Always heard every word by the way even when John deliberately changed them.Screaming very much part of the fantastic atmosphere.
Thanks Dave 4 sharing
a real nice guy
