You don't realize how long you've been following a channel until you hear things like "We've had this dodger on Uma for almost 5 years..." WHAT! I remember when they got that installed!
I rarely comment but with everything going on in Haiti lately, I hope kika’s family is well and safe
@@athenak6724 Google will be able to assist you if you want...
@@athenak6724there has been multiple attacks by gangs that have almost complete shut down the country. I believe they have taken major ports, gov buildings, and thousands of inmates escaped a jail.
Everything you hear on the news about Haiti is either a direct lie.Or it is gas lighting. The West has never forgiven haiti for its first revolution. The men they are demonizing called barbecue is actually a good man.
@@athenak6724 There's a war going on in the area. It's been in all the newspapers.
Gang broke into a prison and let all their friends out and now are fighting for power
Hope everyone stays safe it doesn't look good currently
Dan, it's apparent that you are a very level headed guy. You know your lines and you're always straight with us. Bob can take his plumb, as far as I'm concerned. As far as Kika and her friend goes, I think they were screwed. Oh nuts, if I were them I would have bolted out of that marina so fast.
Glad you settled all this. Can't stand it when things are out of whack.
I was thinking "Dan is really taking this to the next level"
Dan, dreaming of far horizons, life in equilibrium.
If he wants it plum, get a tree.
You missed a level counter at 22:18 when Dan comments how the laser level has a magnet on it.
Missed one between counter 18 and 19 also. So we’re 2 off.
I counted three missing levels. 🍺
@@jlewis4587Yup. Caught that. @4:31 and @22.18. It’s plus 2. Lol
Came running to the comments as soon as Dan missed the first one 😂😂
Kika and Dan ,
I have been working on a yard here in the Netherlands that was building GRP boats . I was building the interior and deck furniture . We used to put them level from the plate the mast foot is mounted on . I would like to point out to you that a boat is not symmetrical . The plug from what the mould of hull and deck are made is built by hand from wood . When you measure the length of the hull from bow to stern you are probably going to find a length difference up to 10 centimetres . Also the keel would not be completely 90⁰ down from the waterline .
What you have been doing is likely more accurate than how they did it in the yard where the boat was built .
So i wouldn't worry about it !
Good luck with the rebuild . I'll be watching !
:) Also, nice light show!
maximum respect to Sanne for stepping in to help, she is a real trooper!
This video was on a whole other level
Level headed these two.
This works on so many levels.
LOL!
@@jonothandoeser Level Our Levels to you too, brother Jon.
Don't forget that you can fine adjust the boat using the screw part of the support jacks. I did this to my Catalina 310. It was amazingly easy to get my boat precisely level for the projects I am doing. Love this episode!
(and add 1 to the "level" counter, please!) 🤣
There is no other choice. ...is there? Even using shims one would need to adjust the associated support jack.
@@geraldhenrickson7472 - The shims I saw in the video were placed to help distribute the weight along a strongly curved area, to avoid a concentrated "hard point".
I watch you two because you are fun and bring a smile to my face, not because you are practical. I’m a licensed Yacht’s Surveyor and owned a shipyard for over a decade. During that time, I never saw anything like the work you are doing on Uma. I’m glad you are having fun and making money, otherwise it makes no sense.
FWIW we did warranty work for a few Nauticat, North Wind, Oyster and other builders. Not a single one of them were built to the accuracy you are refitting Uma.
I wish you all the best and will continue to watch your channel as long as my approaching 80 year old eyes can focus on the big screen.😊
Here in Italy, yards do this to yacht all the time. It takes 4-6 month and about $100-150k to completely gut and refit a solid glass hull into what ever you want. And it will be 10X better than any new production boat sold for 3X more money. It will take us longer, since it’s just the two of us doing it. But it will cost a lot less too.
@@SailingUma Amd you take us on the ride, so we can learn and enjoy
I have been handling marine insurance and liability cases all my life (soon to retire now), and you'd be surprised what shortcuts building yards take, even with large commercial cargo vessels. And, of course, these shortcuts and issues only reveal itself after the warranty period is over! Don't worry about a cm more or less away from the exact level. On larger vessels, the owner would be happy that everything is within a few dm of the original plans.
I am quite sure you are not overdoing it - naturally You shall straighten everything up and level now, when you have the possibility!
You are both smart and trained in architecture, and well aware that a perfect foundation is essential for ease of a straight build and at least simplifies the work..
“Freedom units.” Love that. 😁
I'm so happy that TH-cam creates a space for this type of content. It's even better that you guys are out there sharing your plans, your adventures, and your creations with us.
Architects have a tendency to express themselves through the aesthetics of their creations. What's amazing about you two is that you are grounded both in the physical reality of a boat with a specific footprint and with the unforgiving nature of the high seas. This means that we get to see you express yourself not only through the decisions you make in transforming your boat, but we know it has to actually be useful in the real world. I've always liked it when architects are forced to be grounded in reality. Sometimes you see odd architecture that borders on impractical if the architect is not forced to live and work in his own creation. You guys will never have that issue.
You guys execute your videos and your planning on a whole different level. I love the cinematography. Great music. Great camera angles. Great story-telling.
Best of luck.
Good comment.
Very accommodating of the yard to let you direct them in fine tuning Uma's position before releasing the crane.
Kudos to the workers there.
😅
Hi. Sanna. Great to meet you. You're an amazingly hard worker. Kika and Dan were very lucky to have your help. I hope you enjoyed your time with them.
Dan and Kika, doing a great job with Uma. You're a long way from Rocky and the Rockys, yet not too far that you forget the value of fixing what you have because it's a known value. Something new, would take years to find all the problems, if you found them before tragedy mounted it's fevered head in the midst of a raging storm, unavoidable because a flaw prevented a detour.
Getting the old girl straight and true should be good for another half a knott or better. Tightening up the sides to the deck, another half or so. She'll be tight and ready to whip across the ocean like lightning.
Love the level counter. Very funny. Keep yer stick on the ice, and remember, we're all pullin for yah.
Redoing my 31-2 Pearson made me get into the zen of the project. Last season was motor and rudder control line. This season is the standing rigging. Wish me luck. I started with a Venture 22 about 40 years ago. Now I am retired and plan to sail the Caribbean.
I'm so jealous of this retrofit. I've always wanted to gut-rehab an old classic plastic boat. I've done plenty of boat work, but always working around the kludgy other people stuff. To just start from scratch would be a blast.
Too much work for me but I am enjoying watching you young folk do it.
So glad to see you back on Uma. I was getting a bit weary of all the boat shows and trips to BVI!! More of this please!!!
Agreed. I didn't watch any of those.
As a person who now wears hearing aids, don't be foolish and take your hearing for granted. Wear hearing protection. I prefer the kind of hearing protection shooters wear; ear muffs. They work so much better than those orange things you squeeze together and smush into your ear canal. I also wear the kind that are attached to strings and kind of twist into your ear canal. Usually, I wet them before inserting them into my ear. you can tell when they completely seal off the ear canal. When I am done using them, for the day, I dip them in rubbing alcohol and let them hang dry. The Alcohol kills any bacteria or germs that have found their way to the ear plugs. I have been using the same pair for months now. They are as good as they were the first day I started using them.
Protect your hearing. When I put in my hearing aids for the first time, I was very surprised how much I had not been heard for years. That is NOT a good thing.

Very impressive undertaking. This has been a pioneering web channel from the start on many levels. And rather than selling Uma and purchasing a replacement that doesn't need anything, you've stayed true to your pioneering roots and pressed ahead with a complete PROFESSIONAL overhaul and redesign of a proven classic sailboat. Anyone can take out a loan and buy a new boat. There isn't a lot of skill, knowledge or interesting content associated with that. Your beautifully documented journey re enforces the notion that rebuilding and repurposing older well built craft can be personally rewarding AND good for the environment at the same time. There's too much "throw away" mentality all around us. You are showing everyone that there is another, dare I say, BETTER way. Hats off to Dan and Kika!
happy to see you guys back at work on uma
Excellent video! Btw the ground slabs of that dockyard are almost scrupulously clean which I've ever seen in any yard. You seem to be in good hands.
Yes. It’s a very clean yard. It’s also very new.
check out plasticell for all of your bulkheads and fabrications where you would use old school plywood. It is an amazing closed cell structure. which is lightweight and water proof . Plasticell can supply ready fiberglassed panels to your CAD files . I constructed my 1980 Donnington GT championship winning ground effects gt car using internal stressed bulkheads made from Plasticell foam laminated panels . .
You guys should watch the latest solent boat butler video where he corrects an issue on a contessa 32. When those boats heal to port, because of the lack of internal bunk structure on the port sire, they have some internal delamination problems, he has a fix for older boats, on the newer contessas they provide the fix from the factory. He shows the difference in the internal bunk structure between the port and starboard sides, was super interesting.

calling out yourself on the level counter had me rolling! ty!
Lucky for Uma that you are so level headed in your approach.
Dan, you really levelled with us
I know its nit picky but level is used to describe a flat horizontal plane, plumb is the term for the vertical plane.
Thanks. We know. That’s why we said both.
This is the level best video I have seen all week. Great to see the work getting underway to rebuild Uma.
This all makes me so excited! Everyone else has just been ditching their old boats for new builds and...well, yeah. OK. But Uma is something special. She's not just a boat owned by two sailors. She has a life and energy all her own. I'm so, so glad you guys decided to keep her going. Kika, praying for your family's safety with all the troubles going on. I hope they are well and safe, and far away from the craziness.
As a former boat owner, it always amazed me the amount of materials they use that don’t stand up to salt water. Like your zipper pulls…..argh!!!!!!
Yes. We had that discussion with the guy who built it. But as far as we know, they’re aren’t any zipper pulls that survive in salt water. Until you get to larger ones that can be made of plastic but still are strong.
Protective glasses are a good thing when using lasers 😊
I'm guessing that laser isn't strong enough. But I'll admit that I don't know.
I watched this whole video with my mouth open because how are y'all even like this lol but I watch because we need people like you in the world. smart people who are willing to think outside the box and put the work in
@2:48 you need to be careful with the laser and your eyesight. The laser can damage eyes in a millisecond and we dont know until its too late I know its a low light level laser but they still can blind.
set up a couple of plumb bobs inside and outside and even the boat up with the screw stands 👍👍
I am loving this stage of the rebuild ..the huge amount of dedication / work is quite daunting . However with two of you supporting each other the final outcome will be doubly rewarding .
Great episode. Thanks!
Yay!!!! Back on Uma!
Freedom Units...great expression... also, level counter off by two lol. Great job you two, now the fun begins😅
freedom units, right ? that is non standart and used only in two countries , how about caled Metric a wold standart , opose an Obscure Imperial ......... and that american fredom .. freedom is just other world for nothing else to loose (Janis Joplin) so you measure freedom as Imperial concept but rest of the world ... oh .... we have Liberty !!! (BTW Im an American)
@@albatros1752 im not an idiot... and still perfer freedom units.
Im someone who's lived in several.countries all over the world and can compare what Ive seen by myself. AND BTW, imperial is used in more than just 2 countries...get a passport and get out more youll learn/enjoy boat loads of new and useful firsthand info. ✌️ ☮️
I understand the hoopla regarding metric units. For those that don't understand basic math or geometry it is much simpler to use. If electricity goes away so goes the metric system. The imperial system, and it is a system, is regulated by geometry not some arbitrary agreed upon standard that does not naturally occur.
Maybe call it the stubborn unit.
@@epicurustaylor5954 The metric system predates the electrical grid by a century, what makes you think it needs electricity?
When you reassemble everything, get a stainless steel hammer for tapping SS hardware in. The steel leaves small bits of iron that will cause surface corrosion. When I used to weld SS we made them with a piece of SS round stock for the head and SS pipe for the handle. Works great. GOOD LUCK rebuilding Uma. I’ve been watching you from when you rescued her. You two have come a long way.
Great to see progress on getting your yacht to the next level!
Great coverage of your work! I'm looking forward to see all of the changes!
You have an amazing amount of knowledge get-to-it-a-nism! This is a huge, seemingly undoable project. "How do you eat an entire elephant?!".... "one bite at a time"...
Ooh glass o'clock. Excellent, bit I've been waiting for!
Great job explaining it all. Enjoy these rebuilt vids. Cheers 🍻
Great plans as usual for Uma crew! Well done! Bravi ragazzi 😊
I have to level with you, technology has made me leave behind my string, plumbob and water filled tube. It's great to see Dan being so level headed too!
"Son, the day you can replace my water level, this field will be as flat as Abdul 'no dhow's' beer." - "Hemiunu", chief architect, Giza, c.2570 BC.
He’s really taking it to another level.
El Nivelador
I know it is too late for this time, however when we did refits in the shipyard the "old fashioned" way was to create what is known as a declevity level. take an old fashioned bubble level and hold it up to the known waterline get the bubble level with one end still on the waterline and measure the other end distance from the waterlline. Next you make a wedge that is that angle to tape to the level. Then when you are inside the boat you can use it to find the level you need. If there is a question about athwartship then you make a second one across the stern. This gives you what you need throughout the refit. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing a very useful yet simple technique !
@@wallacegrommet9343 Another way if you have a transit level is to set up aft of the boat where you can sight both sides of the boat and measure the diference from the waterline/scum line, and also fore and aft. This method requires a bit more effort and two people not to mention often more math, but it is quite accurate.
Much easier to just level the entire boat. Then Everything is always level.
@@SailingUma while that is true, it isn't always an option, especially if you are away from a shipyard and on totally dying on a bigger boat.
DYI not dying lol
So glad you did your level best to explain the next step for Uma.
Great video. I truly enjoy watching the work you are doing on your sailboat 🤗💖
More power too you both. Good luck.
This project is very interesting, thanks very much for sharing your adventures. Cheers
Love the Uma videos. Been watching you guys from the beginning, so I really appreciate the transformations that the boat has been through over the years.
Good job patron Sanne. Another good episode.
You both continue to mesmerize with your videos!! So excited to keep watching this project unfold and the neuma come to fruition!!
Awesome, I'm so happy to see the two of you bringing Uma back to life. I really miss seeing her sail.
I got to level with you guys, that was a great episode. Love the attention to detail.
Thanks for the laser show! I can't wait to see how you are going to rebuild Uma!
I think you guys kept level-headed during this project. Loved the Easter egg and and the disco party
VERY EXCITING!!! Looking forward to watching this process :)
Dude! You have a hugh amount of work ahead of you! Lots of luck and courage!
Been _leveling_ lately myself with laser as well! 😂
I bet the boat hull will also give a little when it's now sitting on its keel. Instead of holding the keel up like in water... you know. Just thinking how much that might affect the shape while you're making major new structures (bulkheads and stuff)... Maybe not a problem though?
So glad you are doing your level best to get my favourite channel level in the water again
Nice to see you two are on the level with your renovations. Cheers from Winnipeg.
Lovely, I watch you videos for day one, I'm really looking forward to the new refit.
As a photographer i beg you to be really careful wiith lasers and camera ! A laser can burn you sensor so your camera goes directly to the trash !
Same with your eyeballs...
I've come to the opinion there is no such thing as a square/level boat. Best thing you can do is find the datum line and work from that! Greek philosopher Mediocrates once said, "Meh, near enough is good enough!"
Thanks for leveling with us where Uma is in the rebuild/refit process.
That's truely a monster project ey. So cool that you keep on going and work on it. I am definitely on board here. I think when this project is finished you earned nearly double the subs on youtube, probably also on insta.
This was a great episode and so helpful for those of us who are deep in boat projects. This is truly a rebuild and it is inspiring! Namaste. 🙏
It is incredibly great that you are taking on the incredible job of making Uma properly "new" again...have followed you for many years...and have probably looked darkly at following you with a brand new, large catamaran... .It has been..you 3..
Great video
Awesome!!! Let the games begin!!!!!
Glad to see a boat video finally
Yeah Uma’s back in the picture! 😊
Always good to see the jack stands well secured. When I was a kid my Dad's friend had the jack stands fail while he was working on the hull.
Looking good 🎉 this is a complete refit. I thought it was going to be a couple of repairs and back at it. Going to be great
I love you guys on so many Levels!
You've leveled up!
the dancing green at the end was great!
I love boat refit vids!
Every time Dan turns his head and his eye passes through the laser... 😬
Thank god for boat project episodes.
The sequence at 9:50 in time with the music - sublime!!
That sprayhood is so nice. Good luck!
Sailing Uma is doing their level best …
Love you guys
Love you guys! Stay LeVeL ❤
So glad to see the Boat Work. I think you missed at least one "level" but I think Dan was just muttering it as he was walking around Uma towards the end of the video.
Nice to see Dan leveling up
Glad you returned in the evening to use the laser to recheck the “level” of the hull.
I gotta level with you. You two are great 😂
Nice to see your keeping grounded and level on this project with Uma 😂🔨
Lots of work well you do love that boat. I am switching from Mono to Cat Looking forward to the extra room . Plus space for guests with their own head is nice
Call this episode Saving Uma instead of Stripping Uma. 👍😎🎈regeneration and rebirth. With all that laser lights a pretty funky rave too! 🕺
I feel so level after watching this.
Omg.. I wish you guys well ! Many months ago I asked you guys how long the rebuild would take, and I believe Dan said at least 6 months.. Not sure how far behind the videos are, but I hope you get to sail this season!
Wow, that ending visual/graphic should be your NEW Techno look for the channel.....nice.
Best wishes for the continuance of the build and good luck, be careful.
Level headed multiple approach to placing UMA on hard stands. Level and solar panels, laser and (3) waterline marks, level checks both inside and outside. Acceptable working tolerances.
Looking good .
😂 The “level counter” was AWESOME! That has to be a Kika addition! 😅🤣👍🏼👍🏼
I have had several inexpensive laser levels. They are notoriously inaccurate beyond a few meters., Checking the calibration with another level is well worth doing. I am probably too late but maybe this will help someone else.
Reminded me of the original Tron, at the end.
