How to Judge at WCA Competitions! (In Depth Tutorial)

Quick correction: If the timer shows .06 seconds, the time is a DNF, unless there was a timer malfunction. Also, E1s should be given only by delegates, not the judge.

This comment will just cover a few things I could have made more clear in this video:
E1/E2s should be granted by only the delegate.
M slice moves count as two outer block moves. This means a cube off by M will not be a +2, but rather a DNF.
Sometimes for Square-1, cards are put in the cube to avoid misalignment. The competitor is allowed to take it out during inspection.
If you write E1 in the box, it is not necessary to sign the attempt. Rather, the actual E1 attempt should be signed.
If the competitor lifts their hand from the timer before it starts and touch the cube, this is completely fine as long as the timer didn't start yet, they don't turn the cube and their inspection hasn't reached beyond 15/17 seconds.
If a single piece with only one sticker is not fully attached to the cube when the cube is set down after the timer stop, and the cube is solved other than that single piece, the cube is still considered solved without that piece in it. More than one colored piece not attached makes the attempt a DNF. Pieces with no stickers are allowed to not be attached to the puzzle and still have the attempt be good, but if any piece with more than one sticker is not attached, the solve is automatically a DNF.

Some corrections/suggestions:
I wouldn't generally suggest competitors to solve if they think they have a duplicate scramble or misscramble. It depends on the situation.
0.05 or less is a re-solve, not 0.06 or less.
I always suggest to have judges write all decimal places and let data entry handle it. This is because some judges may interpret other times that are to 2 decimal places as rounded rather than truncated.
Judges should never be writing E1/E2 on a scorecard, this should only be done by a delegate and should not be suggested in this video.
Judges for blindfolded (or any event, really) should start a stopwatch if a cumulative limit over 10 minutes is used. Cumulative limits over 10 minutes are not typically used for non-BLD events though due to there typically only being one stopwatch per station.

I've done it at my first competition last year and it wasn't as hard as I thought but I was definitely very nervous because I had to judge mats Valk lol. I live in the Netherlands so he was there too

At 1:50 this depends on the delegate, some thinks you shouldn't solve to make sure that you didnt get the wrong scramble, while others say solve it in case of the competitor trying to exploit the system. So that one is upp to the delegate

I judged Sebastian Weyer but during his solve he dropped it into his lap and then slipped onto the ground. Was this meant to be a DNF?
Nope, during the solve it's fine! Right after the solve though, if he touches it or drops it, it is a +2.

For 3x3 blindfolded, do you have to use a stopwatch to keep track? I heard that for 4x4 band 5x5 blindfolded, the judges must use a stopwatch in case the timer goes above 10 minutes, and I am wondering if it is the same situation in 3x3 blindfolded.

Question: If the competitor gets a time like 17.547 seconds, should I round it to 17.55 seconds or write 17.54 seconds? Some competitions make the competitors judge other cubers as well and last time I was a judge, let’s just say I got confused for a bit :v
As mentioned in the video, you can write all three decimal points and the data entry people should know what to do. For writing down two decimal points however, you should never round and should always just ignore the last digit.

Sevgin Vatansever if they touch before you can decide if it’s a plus 2 or not even if your 80% sure it’s a def because you never alerted them they could turn the puzzle

Cube Master, there is still rule in my comps that you can’t show your time to the camera before it’s recorded by the judge. Is this true since many people do this

Not completely sure as it varies depending on where/who is organizing the comp. You can always ask the organizer/delegate if there is any place for you to help out. Some comps may require you to judge/run as well. If you watched this video, you should be set with judging :)

Going to my first competition next month
Do a G5 timer version. 4-pad mode for WSSA sport stacking and 2-pad mode is for WCA speedcubing.
4-pad is never used, get a delegate if the judge won't let you switch it to 2-pad
[Scrambling] 5x5, 6x6, 7x7 and Megaminx scramble must require at least 2 moves to solve

What happens if you touch the cube and don't start the timer (not turning the cube, just touching the cube and not starting the timer)?
The solve starts when you start the timer, so since you didn't start it yet you are still in inspection phase. If you touch it it's fine, but if you turn it you get a DNF since you are turning during inspection. Same rules apply for going past 15/17 seconds of inspection. You can still obviously start the timer again if it goes under 15 seconds.
In many competitions there is a group system for heats..Can anyone please tell me that how do i locate my group in a competition?
Are you supposed to notify the competitor right away when they get a penalty or after the solve
I think after the solve, so if they get one during the attempt you wouldn't tell them until the end

It is always best if you can stay as long as you can to help out but leaving early is totally fine if you have other obligations to do :)

Not always required but it's always great to help the competition run more smoothly :D
According to the regulations, all competetors must be available for judging (unless you don't know how to solve the puzzle), scrambling (unless you don't know the puzzle), and running. Penalty is disqualification. So if someone calls you over to do so, it is best if you comply.
What happens if I get a corner twist and don’t notice and at the end of the solve fix it?
If you get a corner twist on the cube, then stop the timer, it’s considered as a DNF
Judging is easy when you can see weaknesses

What if my center caps fell off when i stop the timer? Is it a dnf?
If one center cap falls out, there is no penalty. If more than one falls out, unfortunately it is a DNF.

Usually it's an unofficial event the organizers throw in an competition for fun, like Team Blind.

That is fine, as long as you only twist one corner to fix that issue. Turning more than one corner to fix this will result in a DNF, as said in the video.
What if nobody can tell if the solve was a +2 or not?
It should always be possible (assuming you're talking about layer misalignment), especially with an experienced cuber/delegate. The regulations states that at most half way is acceptable, so if it is right in the center they would usually say its no penalty.
just listen to the delegates and they will determine if it's +2

I was thinking about it, but there seems to be a few good tutorials out there on reading scramble notation. The main other thing is to check the scramble and remember to sign (depending on the competition of course)

That's also pretty simple, look at the scorecard and see which solve they have to do next and scramble for that number. If a delegate gave someone an extra and instructs you to give scramble E1 or E2, just do that :)

How do you sign up to be a judge
At most competitions, you don't have to! Usually whenever they are in need of judges, an organizer or delegate might announce it and you could just help out. Sometimes they will assign judging roles to all competitors to help out as well. It definitely depends on the competition, so you can definitely ask the organizer or the delegate about what they are doing. Hope this helps :)

At 3:34 does a U2 move count as 1 move
U2 is one move, so it's just a +2. M moves however count as 2 moves, so they count as DNFs.

Don't think it's necessary to include in this video, this video is aimed more for newer cubers and chances are they would be judging the common events not FMC, which is a pretty rare event. It's also usually the delegate (from my experience) that judges FMC

I think Square-1 is judged the same as any other normal event, so I didn't feel a need to include a separate section for it
But at my first comp, I didn’t know that the competitor takes the card out of the Square-1, so when I was judging Square-1...
Maybe I could have mentioned that, but the card is just there to prevent misalignment so it is there for a reason and taking it out is allowed :)
