    I don't know why but I find it so sadistically enjoyable to learn about film production disasters and incompetent director decisions. I know it's mean to laugh at a person's project when it fails, but when it has no care or passion put into it that's when I feel a bit less guilty for laughing at a projects downfall.

    As an animation student, I have to agree that a lot of people don't know just how long the animation process takes. It can take days for a team just to create 3 seconds of raw footage ready for editing.

    • @brendanmilburn9067
      @brendanmilburn9067 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      It also depends on your budget and art style. For example Spider-Man Into the Spider-verse took 1 year just to nail the animation style before they even actually properly begun making the movie.

      Depends on the tools you're using and your level of ambition, the greater the ambition the more time effort is involved triply so in the days cell animation and optical cameras. Storyboarding and key framing I think are one the least understood and appreciated elements of the animation process. The visual bones of the art, you blow it there every other step in the visual process that follows suffers
      Of course if you go with what I call the Ken Burns (even though he didn't invent it) slow pan approach to "animation" you can churn that crap out in pretty short order hell at that point its nearly more strait video editing than animation.

    This came out in 1999? I would have said 1989. The garish coloring and scratchy line art looked dated as hell, especially considering stuff like S.E. Lain and Cardcaptor Sakura had come out the year prior - this was the dawn of the digipaint era (although early digipaint anime was a bit rough around the edges.)

    It's funny how 5 million is considered a huge loss for a studio in japan, when you compare that to the 60 million lost on Food Fight here in the states it seems like small potatoes

    • @brendanmilburn9067
      @brendanmilburn9067 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I mean, it's most likely because of the different in value Japanese yen has compared to USA's dollar. I mean really high quality productions like The Wind Rises have a $30 million budget in USA currency. With that said though, Food Fight was a bigger embarrassment because there's no excuse of it ending up that bad of animation (and no, someone stealing the original movie is not a good excuse because that's when it should've been canceled, not horrifically salvaged), especially since 9 (2009) was able to be a fully CGI animated movie that's looks pretty good and had a $30 million budget.

    • @paireon3419
      @paireon3419 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Japanese cinema in general, including animation, has much smaller budgets to work with; for example, the budget per episode of an anime is on average something like half that of an American cartoon (and yes, this means Paw Patrol has more budget than pretty much any anime series). Also, most of the cash (even moreso than in the West) comes from licensing/merchandising, so if a film or series flops, it also kills any potential revenue from that.

    • @GeekCredTrivia

    man was this great I am super happy you talked of the making of this film instead of the film proper cause this is a mess and seeing how all the ingredients for that mess were there from the beginning it is not hard to see why it turned out that way what is appalling though is that anyone in america would pay money to distribute it here like it would somehow succeed despite failing so hard in japan truly outrageous

      I had to learn Japanese the hard way when I was stationed there in the 90s. Be grateful for these language programs.
      Quick story: I needed a dress uniform sewn in a hurry for a promotion ceremony and was able to get a tailor out in town to do it in a day. I dropped off the rest of my uniforms with it, but told them not to rush, as I could get the rest of them in a few days.
      When I went back, they had ALL the uniforms done perfectly. I was so impressed I gave them a big tip for the excellent work.
      This was how I found out that at most establishments, giving a tip tells them that the service was poor and I want to give them money to improve their business. The person at the counter was mortified and the owner was incredibly insulted. I had no idea why they were mad until someone explained to me what I had done wrong.
      TL:DR Learn another language and culture. It's good for you and prevents you from insulting people trying to help you.

Gundress reminds us that even with a team of experienced pros and lots of money, failure is still very much an option. As a huge Shiro fan, this is a double disappointment for me.

    I know that anime does have its pros. But the balls of these people to claim that the actual ANIMATION was internationally revered, at the same time Disney was making fluid masterpieces like Beauty and the Beast.. I mean, let’s face it. The best animated anime in the world is still stiff and lifeless, from a purely motion-based metric, compared to Steamboat Willie.
