I myself am a pretty old otaku. I started hunting any anime I could get my hands, starting around 1990. And when it comes to early anime I thought I had seen it all. But honestly I have never ever herd of this one.
Although I did have a wall scroll that had artwork of that robot from this. I had always wondered what it was from.
I had to hunt down my Uncles ANIMERICA Magazine Collection just to find out most of these forgotten anime stuff!
Meandering away most of your run time and then going 'oh crap! we have a movie to finish!' is a hallmark of classic anime!

I'm old enough to still remember seeing "A Gulf & Western company" under the Paramount logo, I always wondered who they were: thanks to Sage, I now know.
Never faded for me, I was also an epic videogame fan back in the day, when this was released as Bega's Battle, a laserdisc game. Seeing it in full length was just as satisfactory as Cliff Hanger, when I saw Miyazaki's "Castle of Cagliostro".
Oh man, I haven’t gotten so many laughs from one video in ages. I love it. Never change. I remember seeing Heaven and Earth, but I don’t remember anything about Heaven and Earth. I also used to walk by Harmageddon all the time in the Anime section of a video rental store I used to work at way back in college. It was never rented. Killer Clowns from Outer Space got worn out and we had to buy two more copies. The DBZ movies would get rented daily. Escaflownaze was stolen at least twice. Harmageddon, never touched.
I clearly imagined Vega's response to "I am Luna, one of the psychic warriors of Earth!" to be "...Neat." after that long pause.
And then again with "JO! YER A PSYCHIC WARRIOR!"

This was definitely a formative work for me. The rental was a wild blockbuster ride in the 90’s. Back when cartoons and anime were intermixed in the isle and you never knew what you could find.

I wish the original manga is easily accessible, surely the story would make better sense that what the adaptations gave us.
Hell, I wish all of Ishinomori Shotaro's works are easily available, he deserves to be known more globally

There is a good continuity reboot of all the Genma Wars stories, and it’s called Genma Wars Rebirth.
I still like that 2000s adaptation of Kikaider. Yeah, the ending is messed up, but It’s also so incredible.
Thank god another fan. Like it’s really not that bad of an anime especially at the time it came out. I think it aired before Cyborg 009 and might be why I decided to watch that. Plus I love the art style.
The anime of Kikaider is likely darker than the Toku show it was inspired by, because it resembles the latter’s more ambitious manga counterpart rather closely.

At least one company is banking on some segment of the population still being deeply nostalgic for Harmagedon. Sentinel is releasing a $300-$400 figure of Vega later this year.
It’s easy to see how this was as influential as it was,I can also feel how badly it tried to tackle subjects that have to be approached with nuance.
As some podcasts have pointed out; Harmageddon is a very rare example of something that's very important but not actually a good whole by itself.

Harmaggedon is not obscure by any means, its pretty fucking influential for anime as a whole.

This guy always does deragatory reviews for the sake of it, abusing the fact that big part of his audience doesnt gives a shit about old anime in general.
wow, congratz on your wedding Sage, also yep, most of the things we remember is mostly because of the crazy things directors did and not if the movie was actually good to begin with, and most of the stuff directed by Otomo had terrible character designs, but we remember it because the tales were good, and on the lines of Harmageddon... the director might have bought the drugs, but the creator of the thing was the one high as a kite while making the manga it was based of.
You've been knocking it out of the park lately with these well-researched vids that go so far beyond the shitty anime. I love it. (And as someone currently in a serious LDR with an Italian, you're an inspiration that closing the gap IS possible!)

Sword Art Online’s relative unpopularity is also partly explained by the awful situation surrounding many big Kadokawa distributed franchises.

I loved this video from start to finish. I'd heard of Genma Wars (referring to the anime and not the manga) and the less-than-stellar reputation surrounding it, but I had no idea it came from such an insane point of origin. Everything from the odd, borderline nonsensical plot to the rich, crazy man determined to bring the film to life makes this the perfect subject for a video.
You've really done your research, as always. Thanks for giving me something special to enjoy while I recover from the trauma of my last month at my job. Lastly, congratulations on getting married. Hopefully you won't need to perform CPR on your spouse any time soon
I remember two days of No sleep, flipping channels coming to IFC when they showed anime and this was on. All I remembered from it felt like a fever dream. Also Psychic cat! When I found out it hadn't been a dream I watched it again. I rather it had been a fever dream.
The oldest known flush toilet dates back to stone age Britain, and indoor plumbing was common in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. The eastern half of the Roman Empire didn't collapse until the 1400's, only a couple decades before Columbus set sail on the Santa Maria. The Renaissance, when Europe began rebuilding what it had in the Roman Empire, began in 1300, nearly two centuries before Columbus' voyage to America. So, yeah, we had indoor plumbing in a LOT of places when the Santa Maria set sail. Ships, of course, generally just used chamber pots or buckets. We didn't invented flushing toilets on ships until the 1800's (the Civil War-era Monitor had one), and they were generally very complicated due to issues involving water pressure and opening and closing valves in the right sequence; a German WW2 U-Boat sank because a sailor screwed up while flushing the toilet, and British submarines of the same era forbid sailors from using the toilets and instead forced them to hang their butts over the side and poop directly into the ocean while surfaced at night, because the system was so complicated it took an engineer to flush the toilet and not sink the submarine.

Not really related to the video, but it's weird that I first heard of King Crimson from a joke in The Venture Brothers, when Dean finds "In The Court of The Crimson King" in his dad's prog-rock album collection. "Listening to that too early in your development will make you an Evil scientist."
It was probably also a pass-up in the US becase the title is Harmageden and it's not a comedy.

The Romanian monarchy was indeed abolished in 1947 and yes they did have most of Transylvania within their borders since 1918, but the last time Transylvania was an independent entity with a monarchic system of government was as the Grand Principality of Transylvania that was then subsumed into Hungary by the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. And having that anachronistic princess must be the biggest factual error in this whole film!

Kadokawa is probably the first big name that I started to recognize in the credits of a whole lot of anime I was watching.
I remember watching this back in 97…. I had to be at work at blockbuster at 9am and wound up staying up watching it all night… I couldn’t go to sleep so I watched it.

This was fascinating. I've enjoyed these more in-depth looks behind the production, the times, and history of these. I feel like I gain a great appreciation of the medium. Even if only a fraction of his insanity is true. It's honestly hilarious. Sometimes it takes a crazy person to help revitalize the film industry.

I’ve been a fan of Anime Abandon since 2013-2014 and I think this is one of the best episodes of the entire show. The material is perfect for AA, what with being an overlooked piece of old anime crap (complete with CPM dub) that happened to involve multiple big names in the retro anime industry, and Sage melds his newer style of video essay with the oldschool TGWTG-style humor perfectly. I also appreciate the callback to Project A-Ko at the beginning there; the decade-long question of “what the hell was that a parody of” has finally been answered. Thank you for all that you do!

Basically all I remember about this movie is that it was used as the basis of an arcade shooter called “Bega’s Battle” which was essentially a Galaga-alike that used laserdisc footage from the movie between levels.
