To be fair, NGE is basically super Lovecraftian. Take away the Christian aesthetic, look at the way the Angels and Seele behave and operate, and you've basically got yourself a cult worshipping Ancient Alien Gods. Hell, EoE basically ends with the entire human populace merging into a single gestalt consciousness while drowning the Earth in an ocean of blood. Not too mention all the psychological aspects as well. Pretty Lovecraftian overall.

I'm reading the Gou Tanabe adaptations of the Lovecraft stories in manga and I find them amazing! I read them in French, but I know it has started to come out in English too, Highly recommended!

Instead of a electronic device, they use drugs to communicate with the other dimension. It doesn't use special effects or gore as well as From Beyond, but Ted Levine playing a Hunter S. Thompson type character is just makes this movie sooo enjoyable.
