I worked in a gun store in the 1990s. We sold a lot of SA 1911s. Back then they offered their GI 1911 that we sold for $299, $329, $369. Cheap. Parkerized. We sold hundreds at a time. People woukd buy them and send it to Kings Gunworks and have everything rebuilt and redone. So nothing but a bare slide and frame were left. And they were shit. Slides were crush fitted to the slide without any fitting. Oh they were tight. You just couldn't get the slide off. Bushings were crushed fitted. Just wrenched in whether the lug cut outs were sized or not. I've had them returned and we've tried using a bushing wrench and a hammer. Still couldn't get the bushing to turn. Even if it turned to the unlock position, we had to hammer the bushing out by taping the barrel out the front end. Their M1s and M1A would jam left and right. Sent so many back it was a joke. But sometime in the 2000s they cracked down on their QC. I actually bought a TRP 1911 around 2009 and was impressed by the fit and finish. I was not happy with the amount of MIM parts especially in the sear, hammer, extractor, high stress parts. A year ago I bought their Ronin and was pretty happy. Parts were fitted and didn't look like crushed fittings. Just needed a trigger job and replaced the short grip bushings and I was good. I also bought an M1A (M14) and it works. Shock of all shocks. So SA has come up and didn't race for the bottom. They're making guns with quality and at a good price.
