It'd be really interesting for the relationship between the Sleeches and the Fleeches to be explored further in future Oddworld media. We know so little about the Sleeches, I wonder if we'll see more of them eventually!
I can imagine its like this; Sleeches put their 'babies' outside to eat and devour things away from their proper home because its less competition for food there and they dont need to worry as they are also bigger and tougher than themselves. But since they are more of a pack type thing they need to come back. Smaller means less food needed and can fit within the cave like places they live with greater ease.
Something I noticed is that sleeches have visible eyes while fleeches seem like they don’t have any which I think is why they are vulnerable to light as adults but not kids.
As a biologist I think it should be the other way around. Cave-dwelling creatures tend to be eyeless, since that organ is useless in a pitch black environment. The fleeches meanwhile live on the surface, where eyes can be used. The sleeches wouldn't even need eyes to detect light, either. Earthworms have light-sensitive cells on their skin, as they too flee from the l ight, since their soft, moist bodies make them susceptible to heat and dehydration.
@@benthomason3307 maybe the eyes are meant for more than just sight, maybe it’s meant as a method of communication between sleeches in dark environments where they can see each other’s glowing red eyes. And like Pub Benny and Anthony Oliver said maybe the eyes are also incredibly vulnerable to light. Though the development of new organs such as an animal matures is not as far fetched in nature as it sounds, for Beetles their larvae form is mainly a worm with six legs at the front. Not much, but as an adult they develop a tough armored exoskeleton shell, elytra and wings. Plus frogs also grow limbs as they mature so it stands to reason that a Fleech can grow eyes as a result of metamorphosis. But you’re right about eyes being useful in well lit areas.
@@humatrixf9076 I seriously doubt their eyes actually glow, that's more than likely just tacked on by the gam itself for the benefit of the player, same as the wispy tendrils that manifest when they move about. Also in reality, if your eyes started glowing, you'd be blinded.
I just realized since they might develop these eyes later in life, forcing them to go into dark places, that might explain why the fleech guano exists with sleeches, to where the fleeches devoured all those poor mudokens, then went deeper in the caves to where we can’t find them since they are small enough to fit where Abe can’t, maybe eating is how they mature faster, which they don’t exodus since they poop out all of Abe as birds, and that is why the Glukkons flushed them early when they get this taste. Well that, or they just moved somewhere else to most likely devour more. Either option is quite horrifying when you realize how easily they got away with devouring these poor escapees like it was nothing, then they just disappeared with no trace other than their droppings. It could also be their smaller size allows them has advantages like being able to navigate the caves more easily to get prey likes bugs and meetlebats, combined with their better and more natural climbing abilities that don’t require slowly using their tongues, allow them to despite hating light, just as easily be as efficient hunters, if not more so now that they aren’t competing with bigger prey like scrabs. This might make their place in nature like Polar Bears exclusive hunting skills, mixed with Moths trade offs where instead of transforming just to breed, they trade resistance to light and longer tongues for potentially better sight combined with faster movement both foward and upward thanks to their more bouncy and balanced body.
The Fleech being a larger larval form of the Sleech is also reflected in insects, like caterpillars and butterflies, where the larva is made primarily for eating lots of food to reshape itself during metamorphosis. I don't know if Fleeches turn into two Sleeches though, I remember hearing something about Fleeches being mutated relatives of Fuzzles, which Sleeches resemble. Perhaps Fuzzles have a cute Caterpillar stage that resembles a Fleech?
That's a really good point, there's actually concept art that I forgot about of early designs of the Fleeches, which a lot of people say looks like Fuzzles, so you're probably onto something there. it'd be interesting to find out if there is a connection.
Sleeches are Oddworld creatures that have always fascinated me, one of my favorite Oddworld creatures, I would have been happy if they had implemented them in Abe's Exoddus as well. I am happy that YOU made a video about it! 😃
The sleeches are very interesting and their lack of info certainly makes them enigmatic. But Soulstorm, alongside a lot of other elements, has evidently implemented them in a hurry. It's very bizarre just how much thought was put into the sleeches just for them to turn up for one segment, especially if they are supposed to be like vermin animals.
6:15 Metamorphosis from a larger larva into a smaller adult form, I’m suddenly reminded of the Tremors series with how the first stage, the Graboid, starts out as a small infant worm with deadly speed. Then grows into a massive older version that’s even deadlier, and after the creature, as in the Shrieker, splits open and ejects a smaller creature which is its next stage of its life cycle.
BIOLOGY THEORY TIME; Sleeches just straight up eat eachother, much like great white sharks in eutero but, they use all those calories to give themselves some kind of scaly, very defensive hyde
I love the Sleeches, They are very inspired by the Oddworld universe. When they fall into a trap for example the spiked ball part, they die and red liquid splashes everywhere, it could be that when it happens, their red eyes explode and release all the red liquid they contain, Creepy right? Also, sleeches hate light, probably because they are used to the dark and therefore the light bothers them. (even we humans, when we are in our rooms in the dark and someone turns on the light, it bothers us and we try to hide 😂). Their red eyes could contribute to their hatred of the light. It is also interesting to note that they manage to hide in the walls and get past them! Hey! you just let me find out that the Sleeches have orange tongues, man, thanks! This fuels the fact that there may be a kinship with the Fleeches! Recall that the sick Mud in SoulStorm meets the Fleeches at night, so as the night went by they transformed into Fleeches! I think the Slurgs have something to do with this too, so the evolutionary cycle would be: Slurg- »Fleech-» Sleeches? I do not know! I hope to find them in a future game, they are a really good idea! Okay, you, as always, are fantastic! 👏😊
Sleeches being sensitive to light while their larval stage isnt actually kinda makes sense. It keeps the two life stages seperated, meaning they dont compeed with each other. You have the fleeches that can gourge themselves in the djungle, growing up with a high success rate. When they reach their final life stage they migrate deep down and use all their energy to reproduce without using up the recourses the young need to grow up, since they migrate off into the djungle again.
pupbenny: their natural habitat is pitch black! my mind: hm, then they have to be white like an axolotl pupbenny: shows a white sleech! perfect man, love the video thanks
Amazing close analisis for such ravenous creepers, you know i notice they are to similarr to the early fleeches concept art (like bouncy balls with sharp teeth/toungh and spitting slime) the frog/bug looking could confirm the biology relative with slurgs and some evolutionary process untill the industrial intervention.. But wait this sleeches have tentacles or some smookey aura? Or maybe they impulse with some propulcion stuff?
Yeah, really good point, I totally forgot about that! It makes a lot of sense that they probably based them on that concept art. It is interesting that the Sleeches resemble Slurgs perhaps more than they do Fleeches. Especially when you concept that if you combine the names 'Slurg' and 'Fleech' together you could make 'Sleech'. I'm not sure entirely *how* they move, but those things seem to be tentacles from what I've read so I assume it's something to do with that.
Interestingly, unlike most other hostile non-sapient carnivorous creatures from Oddworld, the sleeches have eyes. Paramites, scrabs, slogs and even fleeches lack any visible eyes.
Yeah that's a really good point I hadn't thought about! I wonder if there's a reason for that, or maybe it's just a coincidence? It'd be interesting to find out why they designed the Sleeches in particular like that.
Maybe the orange glow, and how some Sleeches have them, while others don't, is a 'male and female' thing? Angler fish for example, the females have that glowing bulb, perhaps there was suppose to be a show of the life cycle of the Fleeches?
Great video as always man! I’ve been waiting for this one. The sleeches are probably smaller then the fleeches because in deep underground areas food is hard to find. So in order for a creator to live down there they must find food and most likely they won’t find much, so that’s probably another reason why there smaller. They are also like deep sea fish in that they have bioluminescent eyes. This would probably work to attack smaller pray like bugs. (Or maybe there feeding off of the industrial waste that’s being prudence by the mine. Just a thought) However if I were to be honest, when I first saw them I was a little disappointed since I saw the bouncing ball like creature as being a little similar to the Fuzzle. Don’t get me wrong. There very different but I always enjoyed how wildly different all of the creators were, And the Sleeches are just a little too similar for my likings. But that’s just my opinion. I really enjoyed this! Keep up the great work!!
Thank you very much Walker! Yeah you make really good points, one thing that's quite interesting is there's early concept art for the Fleeches where they look like Fuzzles. Some people have pointed out that maybe that's where they got the idea for the Sleeches from, so you're not the only one to make the comparison, a lot of people think the same. :)
Perhaps fleeches, upon eating enough metamorphize into the adult form, splitting into the two sleeches, and the action of this is what produces sleech guano, from them eating what's left of the old body or perhaps eating their way out of it from the start?
If I was a Viker I would design the fleeches such that each one hatches one male sleech and one female, as that just seems like the sort of insurance measure that evolution would favor.
I don’t really see sleeches and fleeches as the same. Related possibly but if one’s an artificial GMO green pet and the other is part of a rite of passage yk?
tbh i think the fleeches are created and inspired by sleeches rather than their "adult" form, or they could simply be a relative species. About the orange silhouette i think the devs intended them to luminate the tongue, however some of them appear not to have it due to bugs, whenever they poke their tongue out the silhouette stayed it last appear for awhile despite the sleeches already move away form the position
