The Eastern Express Highway, abbreviated as EEH, is a 23.55 km (14.63 mi) city express highway serving the cities of Mumbai and Thane.[2] It is the busiest and most important road in the Mumbai metropolitan area and is a part of National Highway 48. It is the north-south artery of Mumbai that connects the city to the eastern suburbs and the Thane metropolitan area. For most of its course, it is 6 lanes wide (3 lanes in each direction) with dozens of flyovers/grade separators.
This highway starts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and extends to Thane.[3] The Sion Panvel Highway at RCF Junction (Priyadarshini) in Chembur passes to the outskirts of the city. Heavy rush hour traffic - southbound traffic during morning rush hour; Northbound traffic in the evening. Approximately 50,000 passengers use cars every day. On the other side of Sion in the south, Dr. Ambedkar Road continues. Connecting Sion in central Mumbai to Thane and beyond, the Eastern Express Highway is one of several major roads being widened and upgraded by companies contracted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project.
Link roads connecting WEH and EEH such as Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) are major arterial roads of the Mumbai suburban road network. Both WEH and EEH run from north to south and are parallel in some sections.[4]
In 2009, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) decided to introduce more express buses on this highway. BEST has also introduced air-conditioned (AC) buses on this route. These buses use highway flyovers and thus try to reduce travel time.
