I'd kind of expect that a full-budget Hotline Miami movie would have action scenes somewhere in between John Wick, The Punisher, and The Raid, considering how fast the gameplay is. But from what you were able to do with what I'm assuming is a budget of zero, you perfectly captured the mood of the game without any action; a dreamlike, semi-creepy conceptual experience. Have you ever played the game Party Hard? I think you could make a really good short film based on that.
Dude this is a masterpiece honestly, the 80’s display resolution, the 80’s practical effects, the lack of synthwave and using music that would actually be in the 80’s, weird 80’s pacing I don’t know it was intentional or not but it was beautiful thank you
Actually met the director the other day at a convention and i was conveniently cosplaying jacket! Sean was such an awsome person . Loved the short film and kinda wish these became mini sodes or some full episodes backed by devolver digital. Glad to have met ya sean!
If someone were to do a television series like this, but with the cinematography and fight choreography of something like Kingsman or John Wick. You nailed the tone and the look, and the music is pretty darned cool to boot!
I am super obsessed with hotline Miami as the first time I played it was only recently. I've changed my phone screens, ringtones, and I've watched about 80% of the fan works on yt in the last week. The soundtracks have been on repeat and have fueled about everything I've been doing. I am obsessed with it. Why am I like this.
I'm not even mad at the less-than-stellar camerawork and acting - it kinda adds to the atmosphere actually, just like the nostalgic VHS noises. This is such a good stylisation it just made me smile all the way through! This is HLM the slasher flick, start to finish :) (I kinda like how slowly and deliberately he moves, too - this is close to how I picture him. Except faster and more alert when the action happens, since that's when he'd feel truly alive and stuff... but I ain't complaining!)
Hey, this is incredibly well done! As another user already stated, Jaket is more of a incredibly efficient, brutal and quick killer, instead of a slasher type as shown here. Other than that, great stuff.
It feels soaked in 80's style and brutality, it really encapsulates the feel of the game. The cinematography is stunning, and the action was really well done. Phenomenal work!!
Mannn I study audiovisuals, and I know perfectly well that this is a masterpiece. I love it. Even if it's based on Hotline Miami, that doesn't take away from how good it is on its own
This is really damn good. Really captures the spirit of Hotline Miami and the gore effects are on point. Also massive props for having a cinematic feel along with that grungy VHS quality. Definitely gives it that B 80s Slasher movie feel
This is without any doubt the best Hotline Miami fan film i have seen, i really liked the details like the camera positions, effects and the video being showed like a 80´s television, excellent job guys!
Loved the effect how did you pull of the VHS effects? Also if you have a moment I just released a film of my own. th-cam.com/video/xXX6dnRKmhw/w-d-xo.html That I could really use some feedback for, and with your expertise I feel I could get some good critiques :)!
Wow, this was incredibly well made holy shit. I saw exactly what theme and type the film was going for and it hit it on point amazingly. Crazy cinematography and editing, absolutely nailed it. Please don't stop making films.
@@notbanditatall Wow! This is An amazing comment! Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m still very proud of this short film. I promise I’m gonna keep on making short films!
This is definitely the best Hotline Miami fan film I’ve seen. You managed to make this film so authentically 80s, which is exactly what the other fan films are lacking, IMHO. Great Job!
Props to you for making this. This has an excellent look with an interesting take on jacket. I personally would have done some things differently, but overall, you executed a solid film. Great work!
If you think about it, for us. The players. Gameplay is dynamic fast action fever dream, absolute speed and fun. But from realistic perspective, its horror. A man in chicken mask bust in your house, killing your friends with bare hands and items your buddies carried. And then finish you off by pulling your eyes. so its a perfect movie, absolutely blessed
Wow thank you so much for those kind and encouraging words! I’ve got more stuff coming soon. In fact, I just released a new short film. Would love to hear what you think!
I've watched at least 5 hotline short films and none were as detailed and accurate as this was. A solid 10/10. Nice job with the special effects and old style VCR-visuals.
I have seen a lot of real life hotline shorts, but this one I think is the one I like the most. Normally I dont see them through the end, but this was an exception, all was really well done... My only let down was the music a bit but everything else is perfect. good job guys!
just some tips, I feel like Jacket should be more like a Human, heavy breathing after all he did and not moving like Terminator, also the calls should be with a sexy/happy voice, a way to remind that 80s style
Really good. Superb. Brought me back to the 90s “America’s funniest home videos” or just feeling like a kid playing around with dad’s camera (literally have the same angle of my dad driving) that made it so real. Great camera work. Even though the modern special effects look out of place but it didn’t slow down the whole film. Really great
Really interesting take on the themeing of hotline miami going for a more surreal gamy approach and even using a half life 2 stock sound effect really add to the sense of didactic obsurdity and obsesssion critism that the original hotline miami had
Quite an unusal view on HM This film really flows like a 80s movie: angles, pace, music, color scheme and audio design all together create a realistic 80s horror movie experience
Why i haven't seen this till this night, this is amazing work man, you're the first one, who created a movie with game true atmosphere, for me it's 12/10. I wish you'll film something else on this game, forgive my english. Greetings from Russia)

Sean Johnson now I'm gonna play hotline Miami...for the 55th time (yes I beat the game that many times)
Sean Johnson can I use some of your cool films for trailer
looks like a late night horror film
See this, THIS is what it should feel like. That hazy, mudbane, murder fever that describes 80's Miami: Drugs, Blood, and Money. Well done Sean.

although i wouldve prefered the actual hotline miami type of music but whatever
I also would have preferred the hotline Miami synth :(
I absolutely love how this has a almost horror vibe to it almost like a cold calculated micheal myers
One of the best hotline Miami films out there, nice job.
Omi People Thank you so much!!!
Awesome, I liked the retro feel in the soundtrack and "videotape" look

If you somehow make it into the movie industrie, you would become big
This truly feels like an 80s film. Even the cheesy acting. Good job!

Because you like hurting other people.
you are on the spectrum

I like how this was set up like an 80's indie horror splatter flick.
Very well done, I'm glad I saw this posted on reddit

Wow, this was extremely well done. You nailed the aesthetics, and had a bunch of great shots. Amazing job
This is basically what midnight animal was in the game, just a bit more true to events lol
This looks and feels exactly like an actual slasher flick from the 80s, great job, man!

For the VHS effects I used Red Giant's Universe VHS plug-in for after effects. I left a comment on your pilot, very good effort put into it.
I really want to get some Red Giant plug ins been meaning to for a while! Thanks for the comment by the way

the blast on the shotgun is unrealalistic
Gee, It’s almost like it’s based off how unrealistic shotgun blasts were in 80s films 🤔
Wow, it looks so cool! It is my favourite fan-film
Hell yeah, it takes place in Oregon!
Holy this is sick, def the best Miami hotline adaptation I’ve seen
this, this film. this is the best hotline miami film i've ever seen. bravo really
