  • Testing out the Superior Hammock Cinch Buckle. I always have used the whoopie slings over the years for my hammock suspension. When Superior Hammock asked me to give it a test run. I was a little reluctant. But I always like to try new products. Well, this one really surprised me. It really got me thinking on how I will hang my hammock.

I have used both whoopie slings and cinch buckles. Like them both and it's nice to be familiar with both techniques. I went on Superior link you provided, thinking I might pick up a couple of their cinch buckles to try out. I have plenty of straps already, so was a little disappointed to see that you couldn't buy just the cinch buckles by themselves but had to bundle them with straps, also. I have used Dutchware gear's cinch buckles for some time and haven't had any problems with them. Thx for the video.

Nice video! Thanks. But the problems you mentioned with cinch buckles are the problems I have had with whoopies, which is why I evolved back to cinch buckles. The buckles are dead simple to adjust, even with gloves in total darkness. And the Warbonnet buckles now sold have strings on one of the triangles, pretty much fixing the loosening issue. It may be easier if you take a bit of weight off of the strap, but, since this is a one-handed adjustment, you have the other hand to support the hammock a bit, if you need to. Still, due to your excellent review, I think I want this system. Putting on my Amazon Wish List (via Amazon Assistant extension).

If you get a pair of Whoopie slings ( 7/64 Amsteel ) with 2 - 4ft. Kevlar Tree Huggers and 2 Dutch clip. The weight will be under 3 ounces for the pair.
Those and the Superior Cinch Buckles are the only two suspensions that I am using right now. If I am not worried about weight so much. I will bring both if I am with a group. I will use the Cinch Buckles, if the tree are close together. If the trees are farther apart. Then I will use the whoopie sling.
My last trip I was with my Nephew. We shared the suspensions. Depending on where we hung the hammocks. We would switch the suspension to meet the situation.

    Hi there!
I'm a ground sleeper wanting to give hammocks a try. I'd like to get a very easy-to-use suspension system for the Dream Hammock Sparrow I'm planning to order. I'm trying to decide whether to go with the cinch buckle system that Dream Hammock sells with their hammocks or this Superior Hammock Cinch Buckle. Have you tried the Dream Hammock cinch buckles? If so, how would you compare them to the Superior Cinch Buckle, especially in terms of ease of loosening, and ease of attaching/detaching from the continuous loops on the hammock.
Thanks so much for your videos! I'm in the process of watching all of the videos in your Beginner's Guide to Hammocking. I really appreciate your explanations for beginners. It's quite a gift you are giving to others.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine

I believe the Dream Hammock Sparrow is the one of, if not the best gathered end hammock out there. ( make sure you get the right size width ) Now the Dream Hammock Cinch Buckle suspension is the same as most others. If you are buying the best hammock. I would than buy the best suspension. The Superior suspension sides up and down really nice. Even with some weight in it. I have use every type of suspensions out there. I love the whoopie sling because of it's strength, light weight and packability. But because of the ease and quickness of the Superior Hammock Cinch Buckle. I now use it about 90% of the time. It really shines when the trees are a little too close then I would prefer. With that hammock and suspension. Which is a great investment. Next, start saving for a nice under quilt and then a good tarp. We are never going to be able to get you out of the woods.
Thank you Tim so much for watching. I always appreciate it. P.S. If you buy the Sparrow. Tell Randy that I said hi. He is a great guy.

      Thanks for your reply!
I’m planning to get the Dream Hammock Sparrow with the Superior Hammock Cinch Buckle as you recommended.
I’m 6 feet 4 inches tall and weigh 150 pounds. I’m planning to get a 12 foot Sparrow with a width of around 70 inches.
I’m planning to get the single layer Sparrow with the 1.7 oz MTN fabric, on Randy’s suggestion. Do you have any experience with that fabric?
I’m thinking of a UGQ Zeppelin underquilt. Do you have any experience with that underquilt, and if so, do you like it?
For a tarp, I’m considering buying a 4 season tarp. I’d like to own only one tarp, at least right now, and so I’d like to be covered for any conditions. For the 4 season tarp, I’m considering a UGQ Winterdream, a Hammock Gear Winter Palace, a Simply Light Designs Winter Haven, and a Warbonnet Superfly. I don’t know yet which I’d like to get. Do you have any experience with any of these, and if so, would you be willing to share your thoughts on them?
Yes, it will be hard to get me out of the woods. I go on a day-hike once a week, and spend the other 6 days longing to go back to the woods. I find the forest more beautiful than words can say. As the famous saying states, “Earth is crammed with heaven, every common bush afire with God”
I’ve been doing mainly day-hikes because I sleep so poorly when I try to do backpacking trips. I’m hoping that moving from the ground to a hammock will enable me to sleep better, and therefore be able to do overnight trips. I typically find sleeping on the ground on an air pad not all that comfortable. I suffer from sore shoulders and hips (I’m a side sleeper). I’m hoping that hammock sleeping will distribute pressure along my whole body more evenly so I don’t get sore pressure points.
I plan to let Randy know you say hi. He’s been so helpful to me, trying to understand what options on the Sparrow to go with.
Thank you so much for your help!

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The 1.7oz MTN fabric will be perfect.
I only have one UGQ under quilt. Most of the ones I have are the Phoenix from Hammock Gear. UGQ makes great quilts.
I have the Warbonnet Superfly and the Hammock Gear Winter Place. Both of those tarps are great. But lately, Danny from Superior Hammock Came up with a design for a tarp that is really cool. It is the Superior Shelter. Versatile and multifunctional. I believe that may be my favorite tarp. I will be doing a review on it soon.
If it were not for the hammock. My backpacking days would be over. At the end of the day. My body is aching and I can barely walk. Especially my back. And that is because the fabric conforms to my body. With no pressure points. I will wake up the next morning pain-free. I am a side sleeper. But I am very comfortable on my back. I just move my legs around.

I like to have it both ways. I think you can make amsteal daisy chain, about 2-3 inch increments over about 3 feet on each end as a place to hang the tarp over the hammock, not just for adjusting the hammock, and then a cinch strap for the tree to allow for the precise adjustments you prefer. The longer the amsteal daisy chain, the shorter the tree strap you'll need, of course. Here's an amsteal daisy change video, btw: th-cam.com/video/nGK2Sl5xKNo/w-d-xo.html

@@AdventureswiththeMarine Thanks for your reply. I actually didn't know that amsteel daisy chains came out. I searched and found them at dutchware agter seeing your message. I meant making one , like the demo of making them for the "sticks" climbing sticks for hunters to climb and sit in trees, like the video I included with my last comment in this chain. I was wondering if there were any issues with doing it that way, too. In fact, I had the impression that daisy chains made from the 7/64 cord have a higher break rating than the dutchware daisy chains. Though, of course I'd have to also get a separate strap to go around the tree.

The continuous loops are 8 inches. Those are the smallest that Dutch makes. Bought a bunch a few years ago because the whoopie hooks are hard on them. I have been meaning to make smaller ones. I think the comparison with the dutchware beetle buckle is unfair. He wasn't even doing it correctly. All you have to do is watch Dutch's video on how they work (th-cam.com/video/q8gK4mphVcI/w-d-xo.html). It's basically the exact same thing as the ones in this video without the finger loop. You can't compare misuse to proper use. That would be like hanging a hammock without any sag and comparing the comfort to one with a perfect hang.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am not bashing the beetle buckle. I believe they are a great design. I just asked Runner to loosen his suspension ( which happen to beetle buckle ) and filmed. He also did not take the weight off the suspension with the other hand. Every thing has it's pro's and con's. But the Superior Hammock Cinch Buckles loosen a lot easier than the beetle buckle. I believe Dutch would agree. Because he makes them for Danny. Thank you for watching and your comment Neil.

  • @JohnnieDoe183

Your friend needs to pivot the beetle buckle so it is perpendicular to the webbing in order for it to move.
Whenever the buckle is parallel with the webbing, it won't budge (which is the whole idea).
I think it's a bit of an unfair comparison to say they're not as easy to use when he's clearly using them wrong, thus making the Superior Hammock ones looks better...are you affiliated with the Superior hammocks by any chance?!
Either way, you should really put a note in the video letting people know this is a false representation of Dutch's product.
And no, I am not affiliated with Dutchware Gear, nor am I against cottage industry vendors, I just think this is basically slander.

NO! There is no slander. ( which I can believe you said ). I ask a simple question. Show me your cinch buckle. Which happen to be the beetle buckle. I am no way affiliated with Superior Hammock. Matter of fact. I have mention Duthware Gear and put more links to his website on my videos than any other cottage company. The video was not beetle buckle vs Superior cinch buckle. It was that the Superior cinch buckle is the simplest and easiest to use. ( if you are not using them for hanging two hammocks with a spreader bar ). And yes, they are heavier and bulkier. ( which I mentioned ). If you really believe that this is false representation. Then please get a pair of the Superior cinch buckles to see if that is true.

HMmmmm ... I'll stick with lightweight dyneema straps, dyneema soft shackles, and Becket hitches. Infinitely adjustable, lightest in weight, and no hardware to wear on the straps/cordage.

Agreed. Whoopie slings slip. Cinch buckles are heavy and tough on straps.

I don't think you can get lighter than the Becket hitch. But a whoopie sling with a kevlar tree hugger and a whoopie hook and a dutch clip ( which is really hard on the kevlar straps ) weighs less than 3 oz. And are so nice to adjust. I have never had a whoopie sling slip. But there are always a first. Thank you J.A.T.lll and Bob for watching and your comments.

$38 plus shipping? Learn a knot, Brah! I splice my own whoopee slings, soft shackles and loops. Less weight, less price, less space.

WS seem like a total pain in the ass

The Whoopie Slings are a lot lighter and stronger. Especially when the trees are farther apart. But they can be a pain if the trees are closer. Thank you for watching jymmy Dkid. I really appreciate it.

Dream hammocks are better and cheaper lighter

I am not imagine any time your have much weight in a hammock you can not tighten a cinch buckle. So this is just a sandbag approach for the typical cinch buckle. I have used Cinch buckles for climbing for decades.
This is just a lame advertisment.

It is not tightening the hammock. It is loosing the suspension to hammock that is the problem.
