  • The best way to insulate underneath you while in your hammock is with a underquilt. Most people when purchasing an underquilt will more than likely buy a full-length underquilt. In this video. I am going to show you why a 3/4 length underquilt maybe a better choice for you.
    We will also be looking at how to set it up. How to adjust it so it will fit around you perfectly to keep you comfortable and warm through out the night.
    Hammocks being used:
    1. Dutchware Gear Wide 11ft. Netless Hammock ( www.dutchwaregear.com )
    2. Warbonnet Ridgerunner ( https;//www.warbonnetoutdoors.com )

    3/4 Length Underquilt used: Hammock Gear 20 degrees Phoenix ( www.hammockgear.com )
    Quilt hook used: Dutchware Gear Quilt Hangers ( www.dutchwaregear.com )
    Suspension used: Superior Hammock Suspension System ( SuperiorGear.com )

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would much rather have a 3/4 length under quilt than a full length. But remember that you have to always adjust it every time you get out and back in. And keep the shock cord over the feet. For 3 seasons, they are the best. If you want to add a little more down in. It is put in the core area. Not wasted in the areas, where it's not being used. They are lighter. Smaller in size to pack. Plus. In the future you want to buy a full length for winter. You put that 3/4 length over the full length. Now you will be warm in extreme cold temperatures. You will be able to attend the Minnesota frozen Butt Hang. Not worrying what the temps are going to be.

    What do u do about the calf ridges from the hammock creating a gap between the UQ and hammock? This issue has stopped me from hammock camping.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You bring your leg up and drive the fabric all the way with your heel. That will remove the calf ridge. But once you start moving around in the hammock. It will come back. Otherwise put a small pad or some piece of clothing under your calf. Thank you Hajmeddig for watching. I really appreciate it.

    More fantastic information, thank you for sharing your expertise. I plan to purchase a Thermarest sit pad (like the idea of equipment that has multiple functions) and quilt hooks.
    Your last video covered tree straps and I purchased Danny's straps (based on your review) and never plan to use those old daisy-chain straps of mine again (heavier, not as adjustable and harder to use than Danny's), thanks so much for that info.
    Someone else inquired about Superior Gear hammocks and I also wondered what your thoughts were about integrated insulated hammocks? A little off subject but maybe a little less adjusting when you get up 2 or 3 times during the night). Pros/cons or maybe you haven't had a chance to really test them. This is my first year of hammocking and so far, camped in temps ranging from 94° to 12°F.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Superior hammock with the integrated underquilt works great. Last year on a winter trip. I had Runner test it out on that trip because I like a 11ft. wide hammock and he only had a 10.5 and not wide. Now has a 11ft. but not a wide hammock yet. Runner is a cold sleeper and has problems with his 3/4 length underquilt and said Danny's hammock was the warmest and did not worry about all the adjustments. When you set up the hammock. the underquilt is also is set up. There is no gaps to worry abut on windy days. Which is one of the reason I will use a underquilt protector. They would be great for the wives and also children. I am not sure if Runner bought one yet. But he said he was. We have a short trip planned for this Thursday. So i will see if he got one yet.
      Thank you for always watching and your comment P Arnold-Mora. I always appreciate it.

    How tall are you? Trying to guesstimate where the 3/4 would hit on my own body

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am 6ft. The 3/4 length under quilt that I use comes down to my ankles. I never use my full length ( except when the temperatures get below 0° ) because there is so much down that is being wasted in areas that are not next to my body. If you are backpacking. You are carrying that extra weight and bulk for nothing. But the downside with the 3/4 length is that you have to adjust it perfectly on you every time you get out. Then get back in. But another plus, if you want a little more down added. Then it is put in the right place where it is needed the most. The core area. Thank you for watching Caitlyn Goes Hiking. I really appreciate it.

    Thanks for the video! I'm looking at the Hammock Gear Phoenix and Incubator. What are your thoughts on getting the HG Incubator in a short size instead of getting the 3/4 length Phoenix? Seems like a middle ground between the 2.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that would be very wise. Then you can migrate the down where you need it. ( Mostly in the core area ). Please keep me informed on what you decide.

    Don't the quilt hooks lock it in place when you get up?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the partial or 3/4 length under quilt. The quilt hook works great for the shoulder side. But for the the feet end. You will want the shock cord over the feet. The quilt hooks will prevent this from happening. And that is because of the length. It works great for the full length under quilt. Thank you Sam for watching.

    Do you have experience with Superior Gear hammocks? They have a different approach to insulation than the attachable typical under-quilt. If you've used their design, do you like it better than the standard uq styles?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was at his shop last month when he showed me his underquilt. I have yet to use it. It is a little different to all the other underquilt. I like how versatile it is. You can use it as a top quilt also. Jacks are Better are the only other company that I know of that has the same concept. I will be doing a video in a month or so on underquilts and the Superior Hammock Underquilt. will be in it. I would like to take it on on a trip to test it out before I do a video on it. • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will help if they are in the right places. They are more for full length under quilts. To be honest with you. I really like shifting the under quilt underneath me for the prefect fit. I have done it for so long that it is natural. When I am in a full length. I will catch myself reaching over to adjust. Thank you for watching Brian Backpacking and Bushcraft.
