    "60% less fuel per hour than a 70-seat jet."
    Yeah, no wonder. The SAAB only has 34 seats.

      I know right 😂

      Also, a Saab 340 flies at roughly half the speed of a jet, so it takes longer to reach the destination and spends more time burning fuel. Even if it carried 70 seats, it would probably burn less fuel than a jet, but not 60% less. I'd like to see a fuel consumption comparison between the Saab 340 and an ERJ-140, for example, which is a jet with similar capacity - but stating the total consumption for the same *distance,* not time. My guesstimate would be 20-30% less fuel for the Saab. Still, because the jet is faster, it can also do more revenue flights per day, and so on - there are many factors to consider, and it isn't easy to say which is more economical or profitable for an airline.

      @Pilotfarmand 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      For short routes, turboprops are far superior ! 1 Hour flights, CRJ compared to ATR 72-500/600. ATR is about 600 Kg/h and the CRJ is about 1400 kg/h, but can carry as many passengers. But for routes longer than 1-2 hours, jets are a better choice, since you can get one more rotation in per day, with the time you you've earned during cruise.

      Km/h not kg/h

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Yuval Abramzon, no, kg/h (KILOGRAMS per hour) is correct. We're talking about FUEL CONSUMPTION, not SPEED.

    60% less fuel than a 70 seat jet? Well Da. It also holds 40 less people and is 300 mph slower! A wheelbarrow gets better mileage than my Vette too.

    I used to fly this plane pretty frequently back when it was N427XJ flying for Mesaba/Northwest Airlink in the Midwest out of Detroit and Minneapolis. Thanks for the video- the Saab has an extremely unique, dynamic sound when taxiing and you captured it perfectly.

    • @QFSAviation
      @QFSAviation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh wow that’s awesome! I know Delta has a brief Saab operation, did they use this aircraft after acquiring NW?

    • @avgaskoolaid4572
      @avgaskoolaid4572 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did, but it wasn't ever painted in the Delta livery like some Saabs were as far as I can tell. The merger was completed in 2008, and the plane was stored in 2010 according to airfleets, so for 2 years it flew as Delta Connection, albeit still in the NW scheme.

    I like flying into EYW. Simple little airport. Did you notice the white Cubana AN-24 at the Southern end of the airport out your 340B window? It's just inside the airport fence. It's a hijack from the '80s or '90s that we never returned to Cuba (in contravention of international law!).

    • @Matt_from_Florida
      @Matt_from_Florida 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here ya go. This is just a raw cut & paste from several different entries on a guy's blog regarding the Cubana plane:
      _And there is enough room to leave this old hijacked Cuban airliner rotting in the back lot. A Cuban living in Miami won a rather peculiar lawsuit against the Cuban government and was awarded the plane as damage compensation for the monies ostensibly owed by the embargoed Cuban government. It seemed like a violation of international law which requires hijacked planes to be returned but the ruling did no one any good and here it sits years later:_
      _Then there's this sad old pile rotting in the back lot of the airport. It was hijacked to Key West on an internal flight in Cuba and instead of returning the plane as is normally done a judge ruled it was to be handed over to a Miami family who were done wrong by Fidel Castro as I recall. Naturally they could do nothing with the plane which was never returned, never flown never used again. Here it sits nominal reparations in violation of international law. Our relations with Cuba are so weird._
      _On our way out driving down Government Road past the airport we saw the old hijacked Cuban airplane still sitting there rotting slowly. It's part of the embargo madness that planes flown to the US get awarded to a Cuban family that won a one-sided lawsuit against the Cuban government. So instead of obeying international law and returning the plane it gets to sit here and pay off a phantom debt. Even the Citizen newspaper has finally come out in favor of ending the embargo. Might as well make the damned thing a homeless shelter. At least it would serve a purpose!_

    I like EYW! Most airports are sleek, slick, ultra-modern..... antiseptic. EWY is the opposite, very rough around the edges,
    I particularly the original 1950ish terminal as it is my favourite, it has a charm that that takes me back to my youth. While I hope they keep it like it is, I doubt they will.

    • @QFSAviation
      @QFSAviation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I love EWY too... besides the fact that the boarding area is a crowded disaster waiting to happen. If they were to just renovate that, along with allowing the people de-boarding a chance to get back to the gate area without going through security again.

    When I lived in Ithaca NY from 1991 thru 2002, I flew out of Ithaca Tompkins regional airport with US Air, which later became US Airways, on various regional turboprop airliners. I flew on the turboprops to New York LaGurardia, Philly, and Pitsburgh, where I would get a connecting mainline jet flight to my my final destination, my hometown of Charlotte NC for Christmas etc. The turboprop airliners included the Beechcraft 1900 C and D models, Jetstream 31, Shorts 360, and my favorite of those, the DeHaviland Dash-8 100 series. The Dash 8 cabin was was most like that of a mainline jet, but yet the Dash-8 was still a turboprop. Unlike most of the public, I personally like turboprop airliners better than conventional fan jet aircraft. For one thing, the turboprop engines burn less jet fuel than a conventional fan jet, because 90 percent of the thrust comes from the props, while the jet exhaust adds a 10 percent extra thrust. A conventional fan jet can fly a bit faster and at up to 40,000 feet, but relies more on the exhaust for propulsion, which eats up fuel. The fan in the front of the conventional jet engine adds only maybe 20 percent of additional thrust.
    Asides from the fuel economy, I personally enjoy seeing the props spin, and I also enjoy the sound that the props make. In full idle and taxiing, they make your basic "Box Fan" sound. In takeoff and inflight, they make a low pitched drone like the wings of a bumblebee. Takeoffs are more exhilarating in turboprops, when the props are revved up to 1,500 RPM as they begin the takeoff roll. Once airborne, the landing gear is retracted into the nausels, and the props are spooled down to about 1,200 RPM. During the cruise portion of the flight, the props are probably rotated at 1,000 RPM.

    The 60% less fuel statement is an obvious one but it is specifically to state that the Saab is more economical and has less of an environmental footprint vs a 70 seater jet that may be used on the same routes.

    Let's take a look at that fuel consumption claim. Using round numbers for easy math, let's say it takes a jet 1000 gallons to move 70 seats 500 miles. The 340 moves 34 seats only 250 miles in one hour at 60% less fuel, or 400 gallons. To move 34 seats 500 miles takes 800 gallons or 23.53 gallons per seat. The jet uses 14.29 gallons per seat. The jet wins!

    • @QFSAviation

      Yeah I wish I could have the opportunity to fly it. Unfortunately the only US airline that has it is PenAir. The aircraft is operated in Alaska from like Dillingham to Anchorage.

      Congrats, QFS. Both 340 and 2000 needed to be in your repertoire for sure.👍👍

      So do they pull back on the throttle to the verge of it going in reverse feather? Or do they pull back on the two feather levers to a neutral position? I'm not sure how turboprops work and that's why I'm asking.
